LAGOS — The Police in Lagos have arrested a member of New Cherubim and Seraphim Church in Ajah area of the state over the alleged death of two men during a spiritual bath, weekend. The deceased identified as Abiodun and Ayinde Oniru, of same parents and one of their step- brothers were alleged to have been taken to the church by their father and step-mother last Thursday for spiritual cleansing. However, after three days, it was reportedly suggested that they should complete the cleansing with a spiritual bath. But their step-brother reportedly refused and left the stream located in Ogombo area of Ajah, leaving Abiodun and Ayinde of ages 23 and 20 respectively behind with their step- mother and Pastor of the church identified as Pastor Samuel Olusoji. Things reportedly took a tragic dimension, following report that Abiodun and Ayinde drowned during the spiritual bath. The case was said to have been reported at Ogombo police division, consequent upon which a team of policemen stormed the church. Police sources said on sighting the policemen, Saturday, some members of the church located on 739, Ori-Oke Ibulun Ilasan Street, Jakande Ajah, including the Pastor, took to their heels. Unfortunately for the church’s secretary, he was arrested and whisked into the police waiting van. Police sources hinted that the corpses had been deposited at Mainland Hospital mortuary, Yaba, where autopsy would be done. A police source said: “We are still on the trail of the senior Pastor of the church. He is currently on the run. He has questions to answer. “Meanwhile, the autopsy report will form basis for our investigation. It is only then that we can be able to establish the cause of their death.” |

A nurse has been charged with murder after being accused of causing the spread of HIV to more than 100 villagers in north-western Cambodia, a court official has said. Heng Luy, Deputy Prosecutor at Battambang provincial court, on Monday, confirmed charging unlicensed local nurse Yem Chrin on charges including spreading HIV, murder by torture, and running a unlicensed clinic. Luy said the murder charge applied to the possible deaths by caused by AIDS. Chrin faces a life sentence if found guilty of the murder charge, and up to 15 years in jail for transmitting HIV. At least 105 villagers including 19 children were reported HIV positive, according to local media. Prime Minister Hun Sen, however, expressed doubts that that the nurse could have caused such a massive HIV outbreak during a public speech he gave on Thursday. Villager Em Pov, whose wife and four children have been found to be HIV positive, said he and other villagers do not believe Chrin caused the infections intentionally. “Mr Chrin is a good guy. “He has been a nurse to my family for over 20 years,” Pov said. A bombing at a bus station in Gombe city killed at least 20 people on Monday, the latest violence in the region repeatedly targeted by Boko Haram, the Red Cross said. As the country is set to hold a general election on February 14, but relentless bloodshed has raised security concerns ahead of the poll, with some warning that voting may be impossible in large parts of the northeast. “There was an explosion at the Dukku motor park. The Red Cross mobilised with 20 body bags and they have all been exhausted,” said Abubakar Yakubu Gombe, area secretary for the Red Cross. “We are still looking for more bodies among the carnage,” he told AFP, adding that another 18 people with “serious” injuries had been taken to hospital. The bomb was planted near a bus that was filling up with passengers, said Mato Yakubu of the National Orientation Agency, a government body responsible for the media. He said the blast occurred at 10:50 am (0950 GMT) at the station on the outskirts of Gombe city, capital of Gombe state. The city was hit by a triple bombing blamed on the Islamists on October 31. The state shares a border with Borno and Yobe, two of the states worst affected by Boko Haram’s five-year insurgency which has cost more than 13,000 lives. The Islamists have claimed a number of attacks at bus stations, often targeting people who are heading to Nigeria’s mainly Christian south. Witness Awwalu Lame said a mob formed at the station shortly after the blast went off, with locals throwing stones at the security services. Anger has risen across northern Nigeria following complaints that the security services have repeatedly failed to contain the violence. While experts agree that isolated bombings are extremely difficult to stop, the broader military response to the extremist uprising has been widely criticised. President Goodluck Jonathan, who is running for a second term, has on several occasions claimed that Boko Haram’s defeat was imminent, even as the violence has escalated. The insurgency has forced more than 1.5 million people from their homes, straining resources in the embattled northeast, as communities struggle to care for those displaced. Underscoring the severity of the crisis, 185 people, mostly women and children, were kidnapped on December 14 from the town of Gumsuri in Borno. The attack recalled the kidnapping of more than 200 schoolgirls from a school in the town of Chibok in April, a mass abduction that Jonathan vowed would not happen again. The president’s opponent in February polls, ex- military dictator Muhammadu Buhari from the mainly Muslim north, is seen by some as better placed to contain the Boko Haram threat, but experts say he may struggle to unseat an incumbent with the backing of a wealthy ruling party. |
Lagos – The Lagos State Government will pay its workers 15 per cent bonus in the December salary as an end of the year gift, the State Head of Service, Mrs Oluseyi Williams, said on Friday. Williams spoke at the end of the year get together and appreciation party for principals and directors in the Ministry of Education. She said that the bonus would be paid along with the December salary any moment from now. According to her, the bonus is to show that the government is committed to the welfare of workers. “Some states are owing their workers up to four months salary but that is not the case in Lagos. “I was discussing with some HOS and they told me they are looking for money to pay their workers salaries. “Our workers will receive their December salary any moment from now and I am happy to say it that it will come with 15 per cent bonus. “Government appreciates your service to the state and urges you to continue to put in your best. “Wherever you get your daily meal, it is good to put in your best; your reward is on earth,” she said. The HOS urged the principals and directors to re- double their effort in 2015. Mrs Olayinka Oladunjoye, Lagos State Commissioner for Education said that party was to thank the principals and directors for their wonderful performance in 2014. She urged them to do more in their duties, adding that to whom much is given, much is expected. “You are a veritable member of the education family and we are here to celebrate you and thank you for taking care of our children in your care. “As you take care of the children, God will reward you all. “We are not there yet but with your support, we will get their together,” she said. Mr Segun Raheem, NUT Chairman, Lagos branch commended the government for appreciating the contributions of the principals and directors. Raheem also commended the government for introducing Eko project, a World Bank supported project, saying it has improved students performance in many areas. He said that teachers in Lagos were grossly inadequate and the available ones were not evenly distributed. “We have few teachers in English, History, Music and Geography. “The result of last May/June SSCE examination shows students perform poorly; as professionals, we need to come together to discuss and see if this is so. “We should find out why students are failing English and not other subjects set in the same language,” he said. Raheem urged the principals to adopt the ethics of teaching and do things right in their schools. “Among teachers in Nigeria, teachers in Lagos are outstanding; the motivational activities have helped a lot. Raheem urged the government to monitor projects being carried out by some contractors in some schools to ensure quality service. Prof. Abisogun Leigh, former Vice Chancellor, Lagos State University, (LASU) commended the government for giving bonus to its workers. Leigh, also a former commissioner for education in 1978 in the state, said that Lagos State has performed well in the area of education. “Teaching is a profession that teaches others, whether it is recognised or not, you should know that what you are doing is noble. “Education is a wonderful profession and I am proud to be part of it,’’ he said. The ministry also presented awards to some outstanding directors and principals in the six education districts. |
Nigerian troops have repelled a Boko Haram attack near the village where 185 people were kidnapped last week, killing several insurgents, soldiers and witnesses said Saturday. Roughly 150 militants stormed the town of Bulabulin on Wednesday, but the military had reportedly received advanced warning of the raid. Bulabulin lies in the Damboa local government district of northeastern Borno state and is near the village of Gumsuri where 185 people, mostly women and children, were kidnapped last Sunday. “Our men climbed high electricity poles for surveillance and sighted (the insurgents) from afar,” said a senior officer who participated in the operation but requested anonymity. Defence spokesman Chris Olukolade said Friday that troops were battling Boko Haram fighters in the area, but was unavailable to give details on clashes in Bulabulin. Two security sources estimated that a large number of insurgents were killed by the military but there was no official toll. Resident Samuel James confirmed that the military overpowered the militants. “We would have been dead by now but the army really gave the terrorists a good fight,” he told AFP. Olukolade said reports of the mass kidnapping in Gumsuri needed to be verified but confirmed that Boko Haram had attacked the town, killing a number of civilians. Locals and officials said the hostages were carted away on trucks towards the Sambisa Forest, a notorious Islamist stronghold. Sambisa is also where more than 200 schoolgirls kidnapped in April were reportedly taken before being split into groups. Details of unrest in the northeast often take days to emerge because the mobile phone network in the region has mostly collapsed and many roads are impassable. Separately, Boko Haram fighters attacked the town of Damagun in neighbouring Yobe state late Friday but caused no casualties, police and witnesses said. Scores of gunmen riding on motorcycles shot sporadically in the air and set fire to public buildings. The destroyed a police station, a fire station and local government buildings, said a police officer based in the area who requested anonymity. “Some of us ran into the bush while others shut themselves indoors,” said resident Grema Ahmad. Another local, Salisu Ibrahim, said he was surprised that the insurgents did not target civilians. “They made no attempt to pursue fleeing civilians or break into homes which they could have done if they had wanted to,” he told AFP. The Boko Haram conflict has claimed more than 13,000 lives since 2009. Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan is facing intense pressure to contain the violence as he stands for re-election on February 14. |
Abuja – United States said on Friday in Abuja that it remained committed to helping the Federal Government in tackling the threat of Boko Haram and other extremist organisations to the country. This is contained in a statement issued by the Public Affairs Department embassy in Nigeria. It said the U.S. government has also restated its commitment to support Nigeria’s efforts to” rescue the abducted Chibok girls and all others who have been abducted in various communities”. It particularly condemned in the strongest terms the attack on Gumsuri village, Borno , which was reported to have been perpetrated by Boko Haram. “We are aware of reports from persons who fled the scene of the attack that suspected Boko Haram gunmen kidnapped more than 100 women and children and killed 35 people . “We abhor such violence, which continues to take a terrible toll on the people of Nigeria, and we extend our condolences to the victims and their families. “Boko Haram has shown no regard for human life,” it said. It expressed concerns that this year alone, Boko Haram had murdered thousands of innocent people in vicious attacks on schools, churches, and mosques. According to the statement, Boko Haram attacks have resulted in displacement of hundreds of thousands of Nigerians. |
