The Ogun State Police Command has apprehended six members of a robbery gang, which invaded the residence of Mrs. Fabolude Jimoh at Akute, Ojudu area of the state and carted away her property at gunpoint.

The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hashimu Argungu, who disclosed this to Daily Sun recalled how the suspects terrorized residents of the area before their arrest.
They were nabbed when policemen received information as they were invading Mrs. Jimoh’s house again and started dispossessing the victims of their property, and the police moved to the scene and rounded them up.

The [b]names of the suspects were given as, Olalekan Lamudi, Taiwo Odunsi, Olawale Idowu, Sunday Femi, Akeem Ogunbiyi and Fatai Onimisi.

The CP disclosed that two suspected armed robbers were shot dead at Idogo, while others escaped with bullet wounds, after a combined team of policemen, attached to the Ilaro Division and border patrol team engaged them in a shoot-out.[/b]He also narrated how another gang of robbers, which tried to attack passengers on the Abeokuta expressway, exchanged gunfire with the police and were overpowered.
According to him, policemen recovered two pistols, a locally made single barrel gun, ammunition, two motorcycle, marked AV 504 AAA and OG 606 KSF, two laptops, charms, handsets, two vehicles, Hilux pick-up van with registration number, YR 156 GGE and Toyota Corolla, marked, BF 965 KSF, from them.

The police boss said the suspects would be prosecuted soon.

Robbers Raid Catholic Church

A gang of armed robbers has attacked Catholic Healing Ministry, Alaja, Ifo in Ogun state. More than 10 armed men, P.M.NEWS gathered, stormed the church, disarmed the security guards and entered the priest’s office in search of money.
P.M.NEWS gathered that the robbers gained entry into the church by scaling the fence. They allegedly used a big cutter to enter the priest’s office but were disappointed when they could not find any money. It was learnt that the security men who had earlier been disarmed were thoroughly beaten by the robbers because they could not find any money in the office. They, however, carted away some valuable items. When P.M.NEWS visited the church, some policemen were seen inspecting the damage done by the robbers and the blood smear in the Rev. Father’s office.

When contacted, the parish priest, Reverend Father Sylvester Osigwe, confirmed the incident, saying that he had reported the matter to the police. He could not ascertain the items stolen from his office at the time of filing this report. He said he would allow the police to conduct their investigation into the attack before entering his office

1 Killed In OOU Cult War

Two [b]female students of  Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, who are yet to be identified, have been killed. One of them was allegedly killed by cult members while the other died in an auto crash.

P.M.News learnt that one of the victims was a girlfriend of a campus cult leader. His cult group, Oroyin, was alleged to have been terrorising students at the campus. According to investigation, a rival cult group, who felt that they had been cheated by the Oroyin cult group, settled the score by killing the leader’s girlfriend.

The rival cult group reportedly killed the girl, when the Oroyin group had gone to operate in Ayetoro and Ikenne campuses, where several students were injured.

The rival group seized the opportunity of the group’s absence, to kill the leader’s lover. They later dumped her corpse at the entrance of the permanent campus at Ago-Iwoye.

When our correspondent visited the campus, students who were milling around the corpse, declined to make any comment. But when P.M.News later reached the private hostel where the slain girl lived, it was observed that many of her fellow students who also resided there had deserted the place.

However, one female student in the private hostel said to P.M.News: “They have all run away. We are packing our luggage. The reprisal attack from the group whose leader’s girlfriend was killed will be bloody.”

The other deceased was said to have been hit by a car occupied by joyous convocating students of the university, who had gone on a drinking spree at a popular haven in Ago-Iwoye. The driver of the vehicle was said to have been driving recklessly.

Efforts of P.M.News to contact the DPO of the Ago-Iwoye Police Station proved abortive. Meanwhile, there was restiveness on campus as lectures had been stopped.

The institution has recorded many deaths as a result of clashes among rival cult groups.

In 2001, a notorious cultist known as Tuyo was murdered in cold blood by rival cultists somewhere near his hostel at Bobagunwa, Ago-Iwoye.

Aggrieved by the murder of their leader, the loyalists of Tuyo took vengeance by launching attacks on those suspected to be his killers.

The school has been shut several times following crisis caused by rival cult groups which had claimed many lives, including that of innocent students.[/b]

Nigeria's stock market, world's worst in 1st Qtr — Report

LAGOS — THE Nigerian Stock market has been described as the worst performing stock market in the world in the first quarter of 2009 by Bloomberg, a New York, US-based financial information network.
In a report posted on its website yesterday, it said “Nigeria’s stock market, Africa’s best performer during the past decade, posted the biggest declines worldwide in the first quarter as bad loans to speculators pushed bank valuations to an all-time low.”

But stock brokers and investment experts said the Nigerian market, if viewed by an outsider from the point of price movement only may be tempted to reach the same conclusion as Bloomberg.

According to Mr. Peter Amah, General Manager DEAP Capital, an investment company, it is true the Nigeria capital market has witnessed huge decline in price movement.

“From March 2008 to March 2009, the prices of shares in the market on the average may have lost about 75 per cent of their value while between January 2009 and March, the prices have declined by about 37 per cent.

“In this regard,” he said, “the report may be correct. But price movement is only one of the many parameters of evaluating a market,” he said.

According to him, when you see the activities going on in the market in terms of the volume of shares traded the market is very vibrant and performing its function as a stock market. He said that what many analysts fail to look at in their reporting of the Nigeria market is the performance of the listed companies at the exchange. He said that the companies are still declaring dividends which show that they are strong on ground.

Using the example of Skye Bank, he said the company has just released its dividend payout which is about 50 kobo per share. Matched with its current share price of about N4, the dividend is about 20 per cent return on investment.

He argued that if the bank sustains the present level of performance, any investor buying the share now will reap about 20 per cent next year. He further argued that in most developed and emerging economies, the highest return an investor will get is about 5 per cent. In this respect he said the Nigeria capital market can not be the worst performing in the world.

Another broker with First Securities Limited, reacting to the Bloomberg analysis told Vanguard that the market has stabilised and will now be moving upward, despite government’s refusal to aid the market. He said in the developed and emerging markets, many governments have risen to the occasion of bailing out their capital markets.

If other markets are performing better than that in Nigeria, it is because of the intervention of governments in those regions to bolster investors’ confidence in the market. He said that confidence is returning to the Nigerian market going by the increased activities in the market on daily basis.

Bloomberg in its report on the Nigeria capital market said “The Nigerian Stock Exchange All Share Index fell 37 percent this year, the steepest quarterly decline in more than a decade and the worst of 89 benchmark indexes tracked by Bloomberg. Stocks in Africa’s largest oil-producing nation reached a five- year low last week, even as a rebound in crude spurred gains in commodity-exporting countries from Russia and Norway to Brazil.

“Investors have been fleeing ‘the good, the bad and the ugly’ of the financial industry since Nigerian regulators allowed banks to delay booking losses on so-called margin loans backed by shares, emerging-markets brokerage Renaissance Capital says. The lack of disclosure left investors unable to identify potential losses.

The All Share Index may fall another 9 percent, according to Moscow-based Renaissance and London-based Exotix Holding Ltd.

“Without meaningful disclosure investors will be hesitant to come back, especially in the financials,” said Christopher Hartland-Peel, an equity analyst at Exotix. “No one can really tell how the companies are faring”.
According to the report “Lenders (banks) may be holding as much as $10 billion of toxic assets, equal to about half of their capital, according to Eurasia Group, the New York-based research firm that publishes the Global Political Risk Index with Citigroup Inc. Banks have provided at least 1 trillion naira, $6.8 billion, of margin loans to allow investors to buy shares, Bank of America Corp. said in a report last week”.

1.5% slow growth for economy

The report further said “Growth of Nigeria’s economy may slow to 1.5 per cent this year because of lower revenue from oil, which accounts for 20 per cent of gross domestic product, according to Standard & Poor’s.

The naira weakened 20 per cent against the dollar since Nov. 26, when the Central Bank of Nigeria began limiting the supply of foreign exchange to banks to protect foreign reserves. Renaissance and Exotix expect the All Share Index to drop to 18,000 from yesterday’s closing level of 19,851.89.

“The market has a daily turnover of between $10 million and $20 million and a total capitalisation of $30.1 billion, according to Renaissance and UBA Capital, the brokerage unit of Lagos-based United Bank for Africa Plc. That compares with an average turnover of $30.2 billion a day this year on the New York Stock Exchange and a U.S. market capitalisation of $9.26 trillion, Bloomberg data show.

“Lenders (banks) make up about two-thirds of the Nigerian stock market, the largest proportion among the 50 equity indexes worldwide that are grouped in industries by Bloomberg and MSCI Inc. Banks accounted for four of the five worst performers this year among the 20 biggest Nigerian stocks by market value.

“UBA Capital says the retreat in stocks creates buying opportunities, including Nigerian Breweries Plc, the nation’s biggest beer maker by volume, and Lafarge WAPCO Plc, a unit of the world’s largest cement company. Nigerian Breweries lost 9 per cent this year after falling 16 per cent in 2008. Lafarge dropped 42 per cent after a 68 per cent slide last year."

Water scarcity hits Imo

Owerri—Acute water scarcity has hit residents of  Nekede autonomous community, Commissioners Quarters, Imo Concorde Hotel, Imo Broadcasting Corporation (IBC), Concorde Area ‘A’ and other adjoining areas of the state.
Vanguard investigation revealed that the water scarcity, which has entered its seventh day, followed a major breakdown of the pipeline that supplies water to the affected areas.

A resident in one of the affected areas, who identified himself as David, blamed the situation on the current dredging of Nworie River, specifically  that the excavating machine employed by the contracting firm, dredging the river destroyed the major water supply line to the area.

“Imo State Government is currently dredging the Nworie River. In the process, the excavating  machine employed by the contracting firm, destroyed the pipeline that supplies water to our area and this explains the scarcity”, David complained bitterly.

He appealed to the state Water Corporation to quickly come to their aid and restore normal water supply to avoid exposing the residents to water borne diseases.

The Acting General Manager of Imo State Water Corporation, Rev. M. Ehujuo,  confirmed that some areas were affected by the scarcity occasioned by the burst transmission pipeline, which passed through Nworie River.

Nigeria: Akwa Ibom Witchcraft Riddle

1     She lies curled up by the wayside. She looks wretched in rags. Scattered pieces of rocks nearby indicate that she has been there for days. Her crime: She was alleged to have confessed to being a witch. She is said to have killed family members, drank human blood and brought ruin and ill health to her friends. This especially makes her highly hated by her neighbourhood.

Udeme, a native of Itu village, like many of her kinfolk, squats in the fringes of her neighbourhood, dejected and neglected. Looking haggard, Udeme cuts the picture of a child from the war-torn Darfur region of Sudan, malnourished with rashes all over her tiny body.

Itu is not the only one in the villages that habour these unfortunate little souls. Tens of them are found in most known quarters of Akwa Ibom State including Eket, the oil-rich community as well as the municipal environs of Uyo, the state capital. They are occasionally found in groups as they scrape life from the unfriendly populace. They are starved, tortured, abandoned and even killed because their parents are afraid and they have become the targets of communities' witch-hunt. Nonetheless, the streets, the highways and the markets welcome the entire guests with open hands.

Their age, ranges from two to 18. Gradually, they have become destitute, hanging their fate on God for survival, or so it seems; a paradox of sort in a state of stupendous wealth.

Witches in contrast to normal human beings are imagined to be the source for most horrible misfortune on their families and communities. They were viewed as the embodiment of everything evil. It is believed that witches could only practice their wicked art only in the dead of night.

In most Nigerian villages, even towns, and recently cities, deaths, natural disasters, and epidemics are blamed on witches. In most beliefs, a witch is said to confess her "crimes" before she dies or goes mad. Homeless, possibly childless old women driven from their matrimonial homes are especially the victims of these alleged "confessions". Old women driven into the streets and losing their mind, in their madness utter nonsense to the effect of being witches, killing their husbands and children, causing accidents, and bringing ruin on their families are immediately set upon and stoned to death by passers-by. Even the educated and the rich believe in the existence of people who "fly-by-night."

The belief in witchcraft; treatment of those accused of being witches and the maltreatment of their families have been part of the African cosmogony for ages. But the brewing calamity occasioned by the recent labeling of children as witches has, indeed, become an easy pastime of exorcists in Akwa Ibom State.

[b]In this neighbourhood, children alleged to be witches and wizards are usually abandoned and thrown into the streets by their parents or guardians. Child-witchcraft, according to natives, appears to be very rampant now than ever before. A day hardly passes without children being allegedly identified as or confessing to having witchcraft. Though witchcraft is not new in Nigeria, child-witchcraft, it appears, is fast becoming the fad. The trend has hit Akwa Ibom State like a plague, and some non-governmental organisations (NGOs), are springing up to reap from the huge budgets of some sponsored interest, sometimes condemning the acts of branding children as witches and wizards.

Akwa Ibom State has the child-witchcraft saga as a peculiar problem, and it has assumed international dimension. The peculiarity of this problem has made the state the highest contributor to the issue of child trafficking, child labour, and child abuse generally.

Labelling children witches has become a fashion for some churches and other spiritual homes, and they are on the increase. There is a litany of gory tales about abused children; tales of children who have been made enemies of society by the unsubstantiated pronouncements of these spiritual homes.

Children, as small as two-year-old are pronounced as witches and the saintly homes are really having a field day labelling them, while he psyche of so many of these kids has been destroyed beyond repairs.

Saturday Enquirer gathered that the commercialisation of prayers, payment for "spiritual counselling and deliverances," poverty, ignorance and fear, are among the factors responsible for the surging number of abused children on the streets.

An NGO, Stepping Stones Nigeria (SSN), based in Akwa Ibom and the United Kingdom (UK), says it is tackling the twin problem of child abandonment and child witches in both Akwa Ibom and Cross River states. The organisation's director, Gary Foxcroft was quoted as saying, "states such as Akwa Ibom and Cross River are well-known for the high number of abandoned children on their streets. Estimates place the numbers of children that have been stigmatised as 'witches' in these states alone at 150."[/b]Foxcroft said the superstitious belief, which "is also known to be prevalent in many other regions of Nigeria is leading to thousands of children being imprisoned in prayer houses, starved, beaten and even killed. Akwa Ibom State has a

particular high number due to this belief.

"Such children then become easy prey for the numerous traffickers that operate in the region. Not only is this issue causing irreparable damage to the lives of these innocent children, it also paints a very negative image of Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria to the international community," Foxcroft said.

Lucky Inyang who is the Nigerian director of SSN also said, "these states have a moral obligation to do everything in their power to enact the Child Rights Acts (CRA) as quickly as possible. "Stepping Stones Nigeria is calling on all stakeholders to unite behind its Prevent Abandonment of Children Today (PACT) campaign and save the lives of these innocent children."

Inyang also called on Akwa Ibom State government to enact the Child Rights Acts and regulate the churches known to carry out violations of child rights. He urged the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) to take steps to ban all films that promote superstitious beliefs and lead to abuse of children's rights.

But, Helen Ukpabio, founder and senior pastor of Liberty Gospel Church in Calabar, the Cross River State capital says it is all a fraudulent attempt to rip off the region.

The minister of God accused Sam Ikpe-Itauma, who claims to run the NGO at Eket that houses the alleged 150 children, to have started the problem.

"There is a man in Eket who is creating this problem.

He is Sam Ikpe-Itauma."

Ukpabio equally accused Europeans of insincerity and pumping money to the wrong hands in the name of NGO.

Ikpe-Itauma is said to have opened his house to a few homeless waifs he came across, and tries his best to look after them.

"The neighbours were not happy with me and tell me 'you are supporting witches.' This project was an accident. I saw children being abandoned and it was very worrying. I started with three children, then every day it increased, so we had to open this new place. For every five children we see on the streets, we believe one has been killed, although it could be more as neighbours turn a blind eye when a witch child disappears. It is good we have this shelter, but it is under constant attack," Ikpe-Itauma said.

Ikpe-Itauma's wife, Elizabeth is said to act as nurse to the injured children, and has named their refuge home Child Rights and Rehabilitation Network (CRRN). The home, according to reports, has found support from a charity running a school in the area, SSN, which is reported to be interested in assisting to feed the children.

"But the numbers turning up here are a huge challenge," Ikpe-Itauma quipped.

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Godswill Akpabio has expressed anger over the activities of some white garment churches he said threw over 150 children into the streets for "possessing witchcraft."

Akpabio said, "All these white garment churches deceiving and destroying families should stop what they are doing. I intend to address the entire church congregation in the state. I've arranged with the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to talk to the churches because they're destroying many families.

"In Akwa Ibom State, we have over 150 children who have been thrown into the streets by pastors who claim the children are into witchcraft. They even attempted to burn some children alive in the state. We've rescued children who have been almost burnt to death on the basis that they are into witchcraft," the Governor explained.

NAFDAC reads riot act to Onitsha drug traders

AWKA—THE National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned drug traders at the Bridge Head Drug Market in Onitsha, that the agency would no longer condone a situation where some of the traders have become death merchants, through the sale of banned, expired, fake and counterfeit drugs to the unsuspecting members of the public.
Director General of NAFDAC, Dr Paul Orhii, who read the riot act to the drug traders during his maiden meeting with them in Onitsha, said the agency was extending an olive branch to them with one hand and on the other hand,  a sword for those who would contravene its regulations.

He warned the traders not to allow the ugly incidents that led to the closure of the market on March 6, 2007 by NAFDAC to repeat itself,  as the agency would not hesitate to take drastic action against them.

“We are going to be firm in dealing with the criminals (fake drug merchants), who are only interested in making money and have no regards for the sanctity of the human life. With the help of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice and National Assembly, we will ensure that stringent laws are made against these death merchants,” he said.

Orhii said he would prefer a situation where NAFDAC would partner  with the traders in the development of their business and hoped that they, on their part, would realize that drug is not like any other item of trade because human lives are involved.

Abia: ‘Okada Accidents Claimed 1,300 in 6 Months’

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) on Monday in Umuahia, said 1,300 people were killed in accidents involving commercial motorcycles (okada) in Abia, between June 2008 and December 2008. Head of Public Education, Mr Ifeanyi Okeke, who gave the figure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said the number was ''too high.''
He said a total of 981 okada accidents  were also recorded in Umuahia between January 2009 and February 2009 and that the commission was still computing the number of deaths resulting from the accidents.
According to him, Abia ranks among the states with the highest okada accident figures.
On crash helmets, he said from April 1, the commission would begin an exercise tagged: ''Operation Wahala Dey'' (operation there is trouble) to enforce the use of helmets by motorcyclists.
Okeke, who said the operation was not targeted only at okada operators, disclosed that FRSC had already impounded 81 motorcycles because the riders failed to use the helmets.
He said during the exercise, those who showed evidence of payment for the helmets would not be arrested because, ''it will be unfair to impound motorcycles of those who have paid for the helmets''.
Okeke also said people who came to reclaim their impounded motorcycles would not be asked pay fines, noting ''we will release the motorcycles if their owners acquire the helmets and show us receipts of purchase.''
He said the commission would then engrave the names and numbers of owners on the helmets to ensure that they were not transferred to other motorcyclists.
Okeke, who commended the state government for assisting the operators to procure helmets at reduced costs, urged it to ensure that the items were delivered without further delay.

Fayose’s group criticises ex-governor 2/4/2009

The Ayo Fayose Foundation and Movement (AFFM) has criticised the ousted governor, Mr. Olusegun Oni, over his statement on his predecessor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose.
Oni was quoted as saying that he would rather not be a governor than reach a compromise with Fayose in a bid to win the impending rerun.

The group, in a statement signed by its Director of Research and Publicity, Dr. Funso Alarape,yesterday warned Oni against "unprovoked and unwarranted attack on Fayose over a return bid that had gone with the wind."

Describing Oni as a "political failure", the AFFM noted that Fayose would "rather quit partisan politics than to support Oni who is an apology to Ekiti people for almost running the state aground before the state was rescued by the February 17 Court of Appeal judgment."

It said Fayose refuse to back Oni because "doing so would amount to acting against the collective interests of Ekiti people who are clamouring for a change."

The group called on the people to vote for the Action Congress (AC) governorship candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi.

The statement said: "It would be suicidal for Segun Oni to place himself on the same pedestal with former civilian governors of Ekiti State because he (Oni) was not lawfully and democratically elected as the governor of the State, which informed the nullification of his election by the Court of Appeal.

"Fayose never had his election contested in the tribunal but was dragged to court by opponents over his name and not over the results of the election, which proved that he won the election lawfully and convincingly."

Police arrest 125 robbers, kill 16 in Ondo

The Ondo State Police Command has arrested over 125 suspected armed robbers.

According to the statistics obtained from the Police Public Relations Officer at the command, Mr. Adeniran Aremu, the arrests were made between October 2007 and October 2008.

The command stated that it killed 16 robbery suspects while it recovered 69 arms during the same period.

[b]Members of a six-man gang of suspected robbers, who terrorised residents of Akute and Ajuwon in Ogun state, have confessed how their juju failed them on the day they were arrested.[/b]The suspects, Olalekan Lamidi, Taiwo Odunsi, Olawale Idowu, Sunday Femi, Akeem Ogunbiyi and Fatai Onimisi, P.M.NEWS investigation revealed, operated mostly on six motorcycles (okada). They were arrested the day they stormed the residence of Mrs. Fabolude Jimoh, of 21, Fabolude Bus Stop, Akute, Ojodu Road in Ogun state and nine other houses. They robbed the occupants of the houses at gun point.

Sources said a leader of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) who tried to arrest them was shot several times by the robbers in the course of the operation, but that the man escaped unhurt while the robbers later fled with their loot. They were, however, trailed to their hideout at Ijoko, Ogun state, where they were arrested. The police found in their possession a locally made gun with an empty shell, 12 live cartridges, two laptops and other items they stole. The two Bajaj motorcycles with registration numbers AV 504 AAA and OG 606 KSF they used for the operation were also recovered.

Speaking with P.M.NEWS, one of the robbers, Taiwo Odunsi, said: “It’s painful that all these juju prepared for us by a herbalist in Lagos state have failed to protect us. We coughed out N380,000 for them and yet the police arrested us.” The case was later transferred to Eleweran Police Command, Ogun state, where the suspects were charged to court and sent to prison.
