Ebonyi state under siege as bandits go on rampage
Written by Dennis Agbo
Saturday, 04 April 2009
Abakaliki-Hell was let loose recently in the ancient city of Abakiliki, Ebonyi State when dare-devil armed robbers went on  rampage.  Those who witnessed the sheer display of madness by the bandits at close range confessed later that it was like a scene from the popular Hollywood films.

The sporadic release of  gunshots on the streets of the city and the clever manouevre displayed by the armed robbers has, unfortunately, turned into a jest by school children who still demonstrate the Rambo-like warfare as they trudge to their respective schools.

The chain-bullets worn by the “bad guys” reminded spectators of the past era  of Charles Taylor in Liberia.  The robbers dramatized their conquest by stepping out of their jeeps to walk majestically on the streets of Abakaliki, spraying bullets as if  they were throwing Christmas knockouts. They were in different groups. One group conquered Nkwogu area of the metropolis shifting towards CAS while another group took over the water works area, yet there was another gang that operated at the Afikpo Road.

Indeed, Abakaliki was under siege by armed bandits that Friday evening thus forcing residents of the city to disappear into their rooms early.     The staccato sounds of sophisticated guns and ceaseless raid by the dare~devils which continued unabated till dawn the following day, left on its trail, the corpse of two policemen, a pregnant woman and a yet~to~be determined number of people while many others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Peace of the state capital took flight as soon as the robbers reportedly invaded the city from different locations.   Motorists and unsuspecting passers~by were the early victims of the raid as the bandits waylaid and stripped them of all their valuables and cash.  They later pounced on any uniformed person including policemen at sight.   One of their victims identified as a police constable, Mr. Edwin Okoh was shot to death at a filling station at Afikpo Road where he was refilling his motorcycle. They collected his rifle after making sure he was stone dead.  Another police officer attached to the Mobile Police unit was a bit lucky but was said to be receiving treatment at a Hospital in Enugu as the robbers only shot him on the hand but could not collect his rifle.

While the operation lasted, another gang of robbers operated at Water Works road area of the state capital simultaneously.    Other bandits on the various streets also killed an Assistant Superintendent of police (ASP), Mr. Philip Alor who was on patrol along the street.

A woman reportedly shot and robbed of  her four~ wheel utility car is receiving treatment at Federal Medical Center (FMC), Abakaliki while a pregnant woman who was battered by the hoodlums could not survive the incident.   Eyewitnesses said the baby in her womb kept struggling while the mother bled profusely to death.    Shortly after, the unborn baby also gave up the ghost.

On Sunday, different reports of car snatching and heavy gunshots also came from the outskirts of  the state. Then came the black Monday when the bandits took over the busy Enugu-Abakaliki highway, precisely at Ezzangbo, robbed many commuters as they (the bandits) patiently waited for their main target-a bank bullion van said to be conveying money to CBN office in Enugu. The dare devil robbers, according to eyewitness account at Ezzangbo, blocked the Enugu-Abakaliki expressway at about 1 pm on that Monday, snatching vehicles before the arrival of the bullion van. Eyewitnesses narrated that commuters along the expressway mistook the hoodlums for mobile policemen on stop~ and ~search since they all wore mobile police uniform and confidently stopped unsuspecting motorists.

A police constable was said to have been abducted by the hoodlums when they stopped a commuter bus and the policeman who thought they were his colleagues quickly introduced himself by flashing his Identity card.    The robbers took him away to an unknown destination. It was gathered that the men of the underworld came with three Mitsubishi buses displaying their styles of shooting with automatic chain bullets round their waists and chest for about an hour but zoomed off unchallenged after their operation.

Investigations carried out by Crime Guard revealed that the Police in Ebonyi state failed to arrive on time to confront the robbers while they were attacking the bullion van.  It was gathered that the operation was carried out by over 100 armed bandits clad on mobile police camouflage.   Unconfirmed sources said many people lost their lives during the raid at Ezamgbo.

Ebonyi state commissioner of Police, Kachi Udoji when contacted by Crime Guard feigned ignorant of all the robbery attacks, clamming he traveled to Abuja but the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Chris Anyanwu confirmed the robbery incidents.   She stated that the woman the bandits killed on Friday came from Kano on her first trip to the state to see her husband who works in the state. Anyanwu said that the police have recovered one AK47 with three magazines, one of which she said, was loaded with 20 rounds of live ammunition at the scene of the robbery.

The PPRO also stated that the hoodlums may have operated based on information they got from their colleagues in the state but noted that they will soon be apprehended.    She expressed anger that banks in the state have refused to comply with the Inspector~General of police order of bullet-proof bullion vans and other protective jackets.

“Sometimes the banks come here to give us incorrect information on how much they are conveying. The police have insisted on bullet-proof bullion vans but there is none in Ebonyi state. They don’t even have bullet-proof vests for our men and that has compounded our problems to help the banks,” said the Police spokes woman who also added that investigations are still on, promising that the Police will soon bring the perpetrators to book.

419: US court jails three Nigerians for 17 years
By Emeka Madunagu
Published: Saturday, 4 Apr 2009
A United States federal court in Brooklyn, New York has sentenced three Nigerians to varying jail terms totaling about 17 years for defrauding American victims of over $1.2 million (N177m) in an advance-fee fraud scam.

An email statement sent to our correspondent by the US Department of Justice on Friday quoted Acting Assistant Attorney General Rita M. Glavin of the Criminal Division and US Attorney Benton J. Campbell of the Eastern District of New York as saying that the Nigerians, Nnamdi Chizuba Anisiobi, Anthony Friday Ehis and Kesandu Egwuonwu, pleaded guilty in January 2008 to one count of conspiracy, eight counts of wire fraud and one count of mail fraud. The statement said the suspects were extradited to the US from Holland on February 21, 2006 after they had been arrested for defrauding their victims of various amounts. They had sent spam mails to their victims, claiming that they controlled millions of dollars. Also, the joint investigation by the US Postal Service and Dutch authorities found that they used various aliases, phone numbers and e-mail addresses.

In one instance, they sent e-mails purporting to be from an individual suffering from terminal throat cancer who needed assistance distributing approximately $55m to charity. In exchange for a victim‘s help, the defendants offered to give a 20 per cent commission to the victim or a charity of his or her choice but the American victims ended up with substantial losses.

The statement said that in delivering judgment on Thursday, US District Judge Dora L. Irizarry sentenced Anisiobi to 87 months in prison, while Ehis and Egwuonwu received 57 months apiece.

A recent ABC News 20/20 investigation detailed the inner workings of the black money scheme. In the scam, victims are notified by e-mail that they have received a huge windfall in cash that has been coated with black ink so it can be smuggled out of Africa.

The victims are told they have to pay thousands of dollars to buy a special chemical that will clean the black ink off of the cash. The "cash" is actually nothing more than worthless pieces of black construction paper.
