abdulaz: I have been on Windows 10 for almost a month now and I have enjoyed a great bit of it, new update came recently and after updating, some features that were present in Windows 7 but absent in 8 and 8.1 came back to 10, and such feature is the sleep mode which I usually use as power bank to charge my phone. Thanks for the insight on update setting and Cortana search location. You're welcome. Actually, you didn't have sleep mode because during the update, Microsoft un-installed your display driver and installed the Microsoft basic display adapter (which didn't have sleep mode) for you. Then when you connect to Internet, your PC automatically downloads your driver back and give you your sleep mode back. |
Computers › Windows 10 Problems And Solutions (official Microsoft Windows 10 links added) by computerboy(op): 7:12pm On Sep 02, 2015*. Modified: 6:26pm On May 16, 2019 |
It's been a month and some days that Microsoft officially launched the latest version of Windows which is Windows 10 and I've come to find out that a lot of people are delaying to upgrade not because they don't like the OS but because they're waiting for Microsoft to rectify some known issues. Today making it a month since I've been using this beast of an OS, I've come with solutions to your fears so you can enjoy this beast with me (especially if you're still on that awful windows
1. AUTOMATIC WINDOWS UPDATE (FIXED ON CREATORS EDITION) This, obviously tops the list of "Reasons why you should not upgrade to Windows 10 yet" found on many websites. Here is the way around to turn it off. (Only problem is this does not work on the Home edition but every other edition works fine). I'll edit to add trick for Home edition users later
To turn off automatic updates; press Windows Key + R, type "gpedit.msc" and press enter, Navigate to Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Update. Locate the "Configure Automatic Updates" setting in the right pane and double click it. Set it to "Enabled" and select your preferred setting. Save the change. P.S: Windows update seems to notice the change after you click "Check for Updates"
2. SEARCH RESULTS ONLY FROM C DRIVE (FIXED) In this new version of Windows, Microsoft introduced Cortana personal assistant which also serves as a local/Web search for your PC. The problem is that cortana searches for contents only on the drive you installed Windows which is usually C: drive. People with a single partition will not notice this problem but it's a sure nightmare for guys with double or multiple partitions like myself knowing that I can't see a file am looking for in drive D: How to solve this; Goto Control panel (right click on windows Icon) -- Indexing Options -- modify -- [select drive(s) you want cortana to search] -- OK If the drive has already been index before then select it from the lower pane, click OK-- Advanced -- Rebuild Then wait for it to index the files in the drive. When it's finished, Cortana can now see them
3. DEFAULT SEARCH ENGINE IN EDGE BROWSER With the new Windows, Microsoft debuted their all new browser named Edge. I used to be a fan of Firefox but after this upgrade I couldn't get enough of Microsoft Edge. There are a lot of new features you'll really enjoy in this browser but the only con is the default search engine which is Bing (since a lot of us are happier with Google). Here's how to change it to Google. First visit Google.com from the address bar then click the three dots at the extreme top right (just under the close icon) then click settings then "view advanced settings". Scroll down to "search in the address bar with" and click the box. If you had visit Google website, it'll appear there, then select it
4. GOING BACK TO YOUR PREVIOUS WINDOWS This option is only available to those who upgraded from windows 7 or Windows 8.1. If you performed a clean install then skip this number. For one reason or the other you might want to go back to your former windows. Microsoft prepared a downgrading tool for you. Just click on Windows Icon and in the start screen, click on settings then update and security and click on recovery on the left pane. Depending on your former windows version, you'll see "Go back to Windows 8.1 (or 7)" Note that this feature is only available for a month because Microsoft deletes your "windows.old" folder after a month so apparently you have a month to decide if you're gonna stick with windows 10 or not.
5. CORTANA SEARCH BAR ON THE TASKBAR This is one of the first things you notice immediately after upgrading to Windows 10. The cortana search bar being in the Taskbar may be cool for some but to others, unnecessary. Here's a short way to hide it or turn it to Cortana icon. Right click on the bar and select "search" (if you've activated cortana, you'll see cortana instead of search) then from the sub menu click "Show search as icon" or "hidden".
6. DISPLAY DRIVER PROBLEM (SCREEN BRIGHTNESS NOT WORKING OR SLEEP MODE MISSING) This problem occurs because during the update, Microsoft uninstalls your display driver and installs the basic display adapter for you.
The solution is to install your display driver back. You can do this by either 1. checking for Windows update and updating your system 2. Go to device manager and right click on display driver and update using internet 3. Download driverpack solution or any driver installation software
7. BATTERY DISCHARGING VERY FAST(FIXED. ONLY FIRST GEN PROCESSORS ARE AFFECTED) Sadly this has not fully been resolved but Microsoft and Intel are continuously working on it. It has been restored on some processors so keep updating your windows, yours might be next.
8. DATA DEPLETION Windows 10 is known to be a data vampire. For solution, see my dedicated thread on how to save data on windows 10 https://www.nairaland.com/3731490/how-save-data-windows-10 Compiled by Computerboy DOWNLOAD LINK OFFICIAL MICROSOFT WINDOWS 10 LATEST BUILD (Visit with a non Windows device to get the link) |

ChubbyRomeo: my samsung galaxy s5 was stolen,,, is it possible for me to make d fone uselese for the thief since i av d IMEI no n d build number @computerboy, nani667 Sorry for late reply Since you have the IMEI no of your stolen phone then report it to your network to block the device. This makes your network provider to put your phone’s IMEI no in a shared database called as an Equipment Identity Register (EIR) which reduces the threats of theft of handsets by enabling individual operators to prevent the use of stolen handsets in their own network. Now to make the stolen phone inaccessible in other networks (service providers) also, your IMEI no is transferred to Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) which is a database of the IMEI numbers of blacklisted handsets. Once the device number is listed on CEIR, it wouldn’t work with any of the network provider. Am not really sure it works like this in Nigeria but you can give it a try |

Jobeleagu: when I downgraded d phone to android version 4.2, the Bluetooth n WiFi still didn't work, is that a sign that d phone has a hardware problem and no longer software problem as my friend suggested? plz where is your location? whether I can pay u so that u can help me restore it because software engineers here around me seems to be confused... You were very lucky that you didn't brick your phone. Once you upgrade to lollipop, you can't downgrade to Kitkat, at least not easily. You need to format your phone before and after upgrading to the lollipop link igave the previous guy so as to erase traces of your former firmware. Also when flashing with Odin, tick "update boot loader" and un-tick "auto reboot". Then when you see pass, boot to recovery. This would change your csc region. As for my location, currently in kano |

henryobinna: whatsapp already changes users from other continents, facebook serves ads. BBM is free as well cos they too serve ads. should whatsapp start charging us i'll still use it after all its not much ~200 naira a year I'll swap to telegram just as the majority of Nigerians would do. It doesn't matter the price. You just can't compare free with paid apps in this country. Even if it's 200 forever. |

many people don't understand who gains from their subscriptions. I've explained that to a couple of friends a lot of times. That aside, the day Whatsapp goes strictly for paid users is the day telegram would become number 1. Trust Naija and free things. They better use ads or ask other social networks what they're using |

iebanehita: Thanks for your response. it's actually the network. Works fine now.
One more thing pls. What application can I use to prevent some application accessing the Internet from the background. Currently using 'No Root Firewall' but keep getting the 'Application was crashed' report and my running apps(e.g. Whatsapp) keeps ending abruptly. Since you're using lollipop, you don't need any 3rd party app to restrict background data. Just goto to "data usage" in settings and click on any app u want to restrict and block it. ...as simple as that |
