Pele did not win the Ballon d'Or as a player, because he was not eligible for the award until 1995. The Ballon d'Or is an award given by France Football magazine to the best player in the world each year. However, until 1995, the award was only open to European players or players who played in European clubs. Pele, who was from Brazil, played most of his career in South America and the United States, and was therefore ineligible for the award. He did receive an honorary Ballon d'Or in 2014 for his services to football, but this was not an official award. However, France Football magazine did a re-imagined version of every Ballon d'Or award from 1956 to 1995 with non-European players included, and Pele was voted as the winner of seven of those awards. According to the publication, he should have won the award in 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1963, 1964 and 1970. This means that Pele would have had the same number of awards with Lionel Messi and two more than Cristiano Ronaldo, who are the current record holders with seven and five awards respectively. Pele is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, and many fans and experts consider him the best ever. He scored 1,281 goals in 1,363 games in his career, and won three World Cups with Brazil. He also won several league titles and cups with Santos and New York Cosmos. He inspired millions of people with his skill, passion and charisma. He may not have a Ballon d'Or trophy, but he has a place in the history of football.
