I read this beautiful article on the powers of the Courts to inquire into impeachment proceedings in Nigeria and felt i should share with you. Please your comments are welcome both from Lawyers and Laymen alike. Impeachment: Court jurisdiction is not totally ousted By Bamidele Aturu http://www.guardiannewsngr.com/law/article01/170106 Perhaps the most controversial aspect of impeachment proceedings relates to section 188(10). The sub-section provides thus: 'no proceedings or determination of the Panel or of the House of Assembly or any matter relating to such proceedings or determination shall be entertained or questioned in any court'. This has been interpreted by some people including judges to mean that the court has no jurisdiction to entertain any complaint relating to or arising from the whole gamut of impeachment proceedings. Nothing can be further from the truth. If it were possible to construe section 188(10) without doing any violence to the other provisions of the constitution those who hold the view that the courts have no jurisdiction to try disputes arising from impeachment proceedings would have been right. But fortunately section 188(10) is not only in serious and violent conflict with many other provisions of the constitution, it is a complete negation of one of the fundamental planks of constitutionalism and the rule of law, namely, the right to fair hearing.......... Cross River State Governor, Mr. Donald Duke, has recently in a public function expressed indignation over the poor results posted by secondary schools students in the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) just released, also threatened to sanction any unsuccessful candidate. He emphasised that as a governor, father and stakeholder in the future of the state, he is bothered by the deplorable state of education in the country. He gave examples with four secondary schools in Calabar that performed woefully in the 2005 May June SSCE, namely West African People Institute (WAPI), Army Day Secondary School, Government Secondary School and NYSC Secondary School. He disclosed that out of 82 students from WAPI that were registered for the 2006 SSCE only four had credits in five subjects with none recording pass in English Language and Mathematics, while for Government Secondary School, only five students had five credits with none recording pass in English and mathematics MY QUESTION TO DUKE: How many Cross Riverians passed the Carnival and Festival exams ? It's the case of misplaced priority by your administration. You cannot plant Cocoyam and reap Rice. Abi I lie? |
Rimi's Last Interview before the Murder of his Wife -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CURLED FROM THE GUARDIAN NEWSPAPERS PDP Created Situation Of Conflict In Kano, Says Rimi FROM: ANDREW OKUNGBOWA AND ADAMU ABUH, KANO Alhaji Abubakar Rimi, in an interview with The Guardian last week in Kano praised the government of governor Ibrahim Shekarau in fostering peace in Kano State. is now enjoying peace following the exit of the PDP, led by former Governor of the state, Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, now the defence Minister. Rimi, a critic of the Obasanjo-led administration, hinted that he would vie for the presidency under the platform of the Movement for the Restoration and Defence of Democracy (MRDD). He also stated that the principle of rotational presidency is undemocratic and unconstitutional. Applauding the governor for restoring peace in the state, he said Shekarau's chance in the forthcoming polls in 2007 is bright, but dependent on the improvement recorded in the state of infrastructure in the state. Rimi's supporters, which include the former Speaker of the House of Representatives; Alhaji Ghali Umar Na'Abba assisted Shekarau of the All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) to record a resounding victory over the PDP at the 2003 polls. He has also ruled out the possibility of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) reclaiming control of government apparatus in Kano state after the 2007 polls. " I bet my life that the PDP is out forever. The PDP will never ever control Kano state no matter what happens. There are people who are dreaming of becoming governor of the state but not under the platform of the PDP. PDP in the state is finished," Rimi declared to The Guardian in Kano. He, however said his position should not be misconstrued as meaning that incumbent Shekarau who is believed to be angling for a second term would have a smooth ride at the polls in 2007. Rimi enjoined the Shekarau led administration not to dissipate energy on sharia considering the fact that Kano is populated by Muslims who are already familiar with Islamic ways of life. His words: " There is too much involvement of government in religious matters in Kano. And if they reduce that involvement and build roads, give electricity and water to the rural areas, improve educational facilities and clear the refuge all over the place, they (ANPP) will be more popular than what they are now." He expressed optimism that the MRDD would be duly registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), adding that the idea of rotating the presidency between the southern and northern parts of the country still needs much to be desired. "The presidency should be a free for all affairs. It should be something that should be decided democratically. It is not something that should be allocated." He said contrary to widely held views, agitation by various interest groups from the northern and southern parts of the country for the presidency would not pose danger to the unity of the country. The politician enjoined Nigerians to be wary of the activities of those supportive of the alleged third term agenda of the President who operates under the guise of pursuing sectional interests. Rimi foresees a bleak prospect for the survival of democracy should the alleged third term agenda by the President materializes just as he expressed dissatisfaction with the way and manner the anti graft campaign is being prosecuted. While decrying the high unemployment situation, insecurity, epileptic power supply, health facilities and poor quality of education in the polity, he said the purported third term bid by the President clearly points to the fact that the north committed grievous mistake when it supported Obasanjo as President in 1999. " Nobody imagined that Obasanjo whom the north brought out of prison, pardoned, gave him money, campaigned for him, put him in the presidency will be doing this to us", he said. "The north never imagined even in its wildest imagination that he will turn out to be treacherous, to be too ungrateful to bite the finger that fed him. In 1999, the north thought Obasanjo would be Obasanjo of 1979 not knowing that the man would become something else. |
According to stories going round, the Economic and Finance Crime Commission (EFCC) may swoop on individuals and corporate organisations considered as bank debtors . And I ask, What is their business with such civil matters arising from purely commercial transactions? Please EFCC you're making me laugh. Abi? |
rikkyjen:rikkyjen, You have made your point, and i am of the opinion that there is just no need joining issues with individuals here. That is my stand QED. |

Akolawole:Akolawole my brother, Please print it, read it and tell me how big the Airport is. I will clear that grass for less than N1m, if it is the same Airport i know. EFCC are you there ![]() |
Wonders will never end in Nigeria. Imagine FAAN using a whopping sum of N128M to clear grass at Lagos Airport alone. How big is the area covered by grass at the airport? Who awarded the contract and to whom? Is EFCC hearing this? The Story: http://www.independentng.com/news/nndec280501.htm ''Officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) are grumbling over the award of 12 contracts at the Murtala Mohammed Airport (MMA), Lagos, by Aviation Minister, Babalola Borisade. The total value is N56,887,935.84 Two of the contracts were awarded to two separate contractors for the clearing of bush and grass around Runway 36R at the airport. The three grass clearing contracts amount to N128 million. The wife of a serving minister (name withheld) was named as the person behind two of the contract awards...........'' |
U.S. Secretary of State for African Affairs, Mike Cohen has described Nigeria as ''a country where anything could happen'' Do you agree with his assertion? http://www.guardiannewsngr.com/news/article01/281205 |
Akolawole:Akolawole, How i wish you know how much i love you and Nigeria, my country . my heart knows no hatred |
rikkyjen:My brother i don't know. ![]() IBB KE? I am too insignificant to be his Boy. I am my father's boy. Men who speak the truth are always targets of the bullets from the ''popular stand'' Learnt that from History lessons: JC[My Lord, Jesus], Martin Lurther King, Malcolm X, St Paul of Tarsus, Saro Wiwa, Gani Fawhenmi, Reuben Abati, Mathma Ghandhi, Fela Anikulapu, Nelson Mandela, Marcus Garvey etc |
A country where everyone is given a chance: rich, poor, ugly, beautiful, and no more Second Class Citizens. Where half of the children don't go to sleep with empty tommies every night. Where people don't die from starvation and lack of medical care Where Water and Breathing Air are taken for granted. Where the Political/public Officers are ready to serve the people Where people are bold /courageous enough to overpower the wrongs and stick with what's right. An end to this biting poverty in Nigeria, that brings self pity in individuals. A place of hope and dreams. ![]() |
Greatpeter:Greatpeter, thank you for not spitting fire. Silence they say is Golden Thank you, your advice is well taken . |
She died from being misinformed about her mind, her body & the extent of her royal capabilities. She died from knees pressed too close together because respect was never part of the pre-intimacy that was being shoved at her. And sometimes when she refused to die, when she just refused to give in she was killed by the lethal images of blonde hair, blue eyes and flat butts, being rejected by the OJ.'s, the Quincy's, the Cuba's & the Kobe's.
|
She died from myths that would not allow her to show weakness without being chastised by the lazy and hazy. She died from hiding her real feelings until they became hard and bitter enough to invade her womb and breasts like angry tumors. She died from never being enough of what men wanted, or being too much for the men she wanted. She died from being too black and died again for not being black enough.
|
She died from being dragged down and sat upon by un-evolved women posing as sisters and friends. She died from tolerating Mr. Pitiful, just to have a man around the house. She died from sacrificing herself for everybody and everything when what she really wanted to do was be a singer, a dancer, or some magnificent other. She died from lies of omission because she didn't want to bring the black man down.
|
She died from asphyxiation, from secrets she kept trying to burn away instead of allowing herself the kind of nervous breakdown she was entitled to, but only white girls could afford. She died from being responsible, because she was the last rung on the ladder and there was no one under her she could dump on. The strong black woman is dead
|
She died from loving men who didn't love themselves and could only offer her a crippled reflection. She died from raising children alone. She died from the lies her grandmother told her mother and her mother told her about life, men & racism. She died from being sexually abused as a child and having to take that truth everywhere she went every day of her life, exchanging the humiliation for guilt and back again.
|
Someone sent this to me and I felt like sharing it as a tribute to my ''black women'' all over the world and to other non-black women . THE STRONG BLACK WOMAN While struggling with the reality of being a human instead of a myth, the strong black woman passed away. Medical sources say she died of natural causes, but those who knew her know she died from being silent when she should have been screaming, smiling when she should have been raging, from being sick and not wanting anyone to know because her pain might inconvenience them. She died from an overdose of other people clinging to her when she didn't even have energy for herself

''For of those to whom much is given, much is required. And when at some future date the high court of history sits in judgement on each of us, recording whether in our brief span of service we fulfilled our responsibilities to the state, our success or failure, in whatever office we hold, will be measured by the answers to four questions: First, were we truly men of courage… Second, were we truly men of judgement… Third, were we truly men of integrity… Finally were we truly men of dedication? '' Speech to Massacchussetts State Legislature (9 January 1961) -John Fitzgerald Kennedy With the above quotation by JFK in mind and the rumour of a 3rd term Presidential Agenda in Nigeria, I join Reuben Abati in demanding: ''We need such men of courage at this time'' - Reuben Abati: http://www.guardiannewsngr.com/editorial_opinion/article02/251205 |
