*Kwara distribution of projects, Offa deserves more after six years* By Adeoye Babalola Kwara State was established in 1967, alongside other states such as Lagos, Kaduna, Kano, Cross River, and Rivers. Before its creation, Offa had a rich history, existing for over 200 years. This long-standing legacy highlights Offa not merely as a settlement, but as an important city whose leaders actively participated in the struggle to form Kwara State. Notably, JS Olawoyin was a figure in this fight, and historical records provide an account of the essential role Offa played in this pivotal movement. Over the past six years, I have personally observed, reflecting the spirit and concerns of a true Offa citizen, that our town has yet to reap the anticipated benefits of democracy, especially the Otoge crusade of 2019, where we had tied our hope, despite our historical significance. The quest for change commenced from Offa, particularly during the infamous Offa robbery incident in 2018. This event galvanized our community and showcased our resolve, which was crucial to the Otoge movement—a struggle that ultimately led to the election of the current governor of Kwara State, Mallam Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq, we regarded him as the "soludero" of Kwara, believing wholeheartedly that he would prioritize the development of Offa, alongside other towns in the state. Regrettably, after six years of governance, it has become painfully clear that our community's needs have largely been ignored. Offa has consistently communicated its pressing concerns, which include the urgent need for improved roads and access to potable water, among other essential infrastructural requirements. Despite our persistent advocacy, the present administration has failed to address these issues adequately. A staggering statistic reveals that we have more than 50 roads in serious disrepair, with many of the older roads completely eroded. While I acknowledge the recent renovations of Taiwo Road in Offa, it is crucial to note that this administration has only managed to construct or rehabilitate three roads out of the over 50 in dire need of attention during the last six years. This scenario reflects a troubling neglect of the second most populous city in Kwara State. It has become apparent to me that while Kwara is not stagnant in its developmental efforts, the allocation of state resources for infrastructure projects appears heavily skewed. The majority of funded projects are concentrated in the Kwara Central Senatorial District, leaving the other two districts—Kwara South and Kwara North—largely underserved. While it is not fair to directly compare Ilorin, the state capital, to Offa or any other towns, it is important to underscore the disparities. Kwara Central continues to experience extensive road rehabilitation and infrastructure upgrades, while other regions, including Offa, have been systematically overlooked, resulting in significant inequities in development across the state. Ilorin Visual Art Center, Ilorin International Conference Center, Ilorin Innovation Hub, Garment Factory, Sugar Film Factory, Tanke Flyover, Unity Flyover, University of Education Ilorin among others are all domiciled in Ilorin, Offa has been a community whose development reflects the contribution and dedicaion of her people, in the last six years, government presence/patronage within our community is not different from what we had before the evolution. I urge Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to use state resources judiciously, we are a people who don't forget. Kwara Central has uncountable legacy projects with nothing close to them in Kwara South and Kwara North in six years in power. Adeoye Babalola writes from Ilorin |

Nigeria: The figures, future, vision and mission By Muhydeen Okunlola Kayode The amalgamation of Nigeria occurred in 1914, resulting in a union between the northern and southern regions that has often been described as a forced marriage. The differences between these regions have persisted over decades, reflecting variations in culture and governance perspectives. Historical observations indicate that administrations in Nigeria have frequently favored appointments and policies that prioritize regional or tribal affiliations, which raises concerns about adherence to the constitutional principles of equity and justice. An assessment of Nigeria's historical governance reveals that previous administrations often achieved better economic conditions compared to recent ones. For example, during President Goodluck Jonathan's administration in 2012, Nigeria's total public debt stock (including both external and domestic debt) was approximately 48 thousand USD. In contrast, recent figures indicate that the current public debt stock has risen to around 98.5 billion USD in 2025. This illustrates a significant change in the country's fiscal situation over time. At times, I find myself contemplating the unfortunate reality that Nigerians have often struggled to elect the best candidates for the presidency. I am among many who fervently believed that Muhammadu Buhari would be our savior when he came to power in 2015. I invested significant effort and resources to support his election campaign, fueled by hope for transformative change. Sadly, my optimism proved misplaced, as his tenure left Nigeria’s economy in disarray. During Buhari's administration, total government revenues amounted to a staggering N26.67 trillion, while expenditures soared to N60.64 trillion, resulting in a staggering deficit of N33.97 trillion between 2016 and 2022. This financial abyss was largely bridged through domestic borrowing, with the federal government's debt skyrocketing from N8.84 trillion in December 2015 to an astonishing N44.91 trillion by June 2023. In tandem, external debt surged from $7.35 billion to $37.2 billion during the same period, not accounting for the additional support provided by the Central Bank, which totaled around N25 trillion. Consequently, President Buhari's leadership escalated Nigeria’s total debt profile from N42 trillion to a daunting N77 trillion. This dramatic increase in debt had severe implications for debt servicing, which rose alarmingly from N1.06 trillion in 2015 to N5.24 trillion by 2022. Under his administration, the debt-service-to-revenue ratio skyrocketed from a concerning 29% to a staggering 96%. Compounding these economic troubles, the surge in banditry during this time increased by 72%, illustrating a growing insecurity in the nation. Meanwhile, the hopeful mantra of “change” that had resonated during the 2015 presidential campaign faded into obscurity, leaving many disillusioned, may his soul rest in perfect peace. Following the tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari, the Nigerian populace has embarked on a new political journey under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, often referred to by his campaign slogan "Emilokan." While his governance may seem familiar to many Nigerians, given his longstanding political influence, his legitimacy as a leader has sparked considerable debate. Tinubu, who hails from Iragbiji, has been credited by some as the architect of modern Lagos, a claim that remains contested among various factions of the population. Upon assuming office, President Tinubu initiated a series of controversial policies that have left many Nigerians in a state of uncertainty. Notably, his announcement regarding the removal of fuel subsidies marked a dramatic turning point. This decision, aimed at addressing persistent economic challenges, has instead plunged the country into a crisis characterized by soaring inflation rates. Since the subsidy removal, the prices of essential commodities have skyrocketed, with increases noted as high as 300% or more in certain instances. This steep rise in living costs has heightened the economic struggles faced by many Nigerians, leading to widespread dissatisfaction and unrest. As the nation grapples with these challenges, the implications of Tinubu's policies continue to unfold, leaving citizens to question the path forward under his administration.. In the last two years, an average Nigerian has remained a shadow of him/herself, what Nigerians now refer to as TINUBUNOMICS, On the flip side, much as the economic handlers of the country will want the citizens to laud them for the purported economic growth, it is noteworthy that the lives of average Nigerians have worsened under this government. Nigerians are experiencing a higher cost of living rather than a higher standard of living. Inflation, unemployment, and poverty levels are rising in Nigeria. As of March 2025, headline inflation stands at 24.23% according to the National Bureau of Statistics. The World Bank has reported that the poverty rate among Nigeria’s rural population has reached 75.5%, indicating significant economic challenges and deepening inequality across the country. The April 2025 Poverty and Equity Brief from the World Bank notes that rural residents are disproportionately affected by economic stagnation, inflation, and structural issues that have impacted the nation’s economic growth in recent years. Data from nationally representative surveys reveal that 41.3% of the urban population lives below the poverty line, while this figure is nearly twice as high in rural areas. Additionally, the World Bank recently approved a $1.08 billion loan to Nigeria aimed at supporting education, nutrition, and economic resilience, bringing the total public debt to over N144.67 trillion. This situation raises concerns among financial experts regarding the country's economic stability. As the government continues to address these challenges, there is a pronounced focus on achieving sustainable economic development and improving the financial well-being of its citizens. I wish Nigerians well. Muhydeen Okunlola Kayode 22, July 2025. |

You are not sincere to Kwarans, such structure does not exist inside College of Health Technology Offa, KSYC blasts KWSG The Kwara South Youth Congress, a pro-democracy group advocating for the rights of residents in Kwara South, has publicly condemned Fafoluyi Olayinka, the Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Governor of Kwara, for allegedly disseminating false information regarding the conditions at the Kwara State College of Health Technology in Offa. The spokesperson for the group, Adejare Bashir, expressed grave concerns over what they perceive as a lack of accountability and sincerity from the Kwara State government towards its citizens. In a recent statement, Adejare referred to a video shared by the chairman of Kwara's National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), which vividly depicted the dire living conditions of health technology students. The footage revealed students forced to sleep on metal bunk beds without adequate bedding, all while residing in a decaying building. This alarming situation is compounded by the fact that the school management and the government impose high fees on students for hostel accommodations that offer little more comfort than a refugee camp. According to Bashir, this reflects a disturbing pattern of neglect towards the people of Kwara South, especially in light of the ongoing insecurities afflicting various communities in the region. Adequate governmental action in such situations would normally include a hands-on approach, as a responsible government, one would expect that the governor or his commissioners would visit the school, access the poor situation, initiate a meaningful dialogue about potential remedies through established governmental channels. However, what transpired was instead a controversial statement issued by Olayinka. This statement, which has been described as misleading, attempted to depict a photograph linked to hospitals in Osun State as a representation of ongoing construction within the Health Technology College's premises. Bashir raised serious questions about this insincerity, asking, “What are they trying to achieve with such deception? Who are they attempting to impress—the vulnerable students whose wellbeing is at risk, or the affluent citizens of Offa?” Bashir further remarked on the unsettling reality that a government, tasked with safeguarding its citizens’ lives, appears to be prioritizing propaganda over genuine action. This, he asserted, not only undermines public trust but also signals a dangerous deviation from responsible governance. "When a government chooses to manipulate the truth rather than address pressing issues, it is an ungovernable act," he stated. “ it’s more worrisome, when a government that is meant to protect the lives of its citizens now thrive in propaganda and insincerity using people lives to settle political inabilities, it’s not only an ungovernable act, it’s a step towards lose of trust in the government” To emphasize their commitment to truth, Adejare noted that members of the Kwara South Youth Congress had visited the college and engaged with students firsthand. They have gathered ample video evidence corroborating the appalling state of the college, further reinforcing the urgent need for assistance. He urged Solace and other governmental aides who may be engaging in misinformation to refrain from exploiting the region for their own ends. “If the government is unable or unwilling to provide necessary support, it should not obstruct potential benefactors,” he concluded, expressing disappointment at what he perceives as a government opting for falsehood over genuine solutions. |
MOK Foundation Extends Educational Support to Pupils in Eleyeoka, Irepodun LGA The Muhydeen Okunlola Kayode (MOK) Foundation on Thursday, July 18, visited the Community LGEA Primary School in Eleyeoka, Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, where it donated writing materials and paid the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) levies of the pupils. The intervention, targeted particularly at kindergarten and lower primary (class 1 to 3) pupils, is part of the Foundation’s ongoing effort to reduce the burden on struggling families while empowering children with the tools needed to succeed in their academic pursuits. The pupils received essential writing materials including notebooks, pencils, pens, and erasers. According to Alhaji Omotosho Surajudeen Olaniyi, a representative of the Foundation, the gesture is derived from the present realities as many family have difficulties in provision of these items due to economic hardship. "The MOK Foundation’s gesture is expected to boost the morale of the young learners and positively impact their educational experience. "Equally significant was the payment of PTA levies for all pupils in the targeted classes, this is a move warmly welcomed by both parents and teachers. For many families in rural communities, such levies can be a financial strain, often leading to absenteeism or withdrawal of pupils from school," He said. Also, Omotosho emphasized that the initiative aligns with the vision of the Foundation’s Founder, Alhaji Muhydeen Okunlola Kayode, to make qualitative education accessible and affordable, especially in underserved areas of the state. "Alhaji M.O.K., believes that every child deserves a fair chance at education, regardless of their background. By removing some of the financial hurdles, we hope to encourage school attendance and support the learning process," he said. The school's management and teaching staff, visibly elated, expressed their gratitude to the Foundation for the timely intervention. Prayers and words of appreciation were offered to the MOK Foundation and its leadership for their consistent support to rural education and child development. The MOK Foundation has in recent years built a reputation for impactful interventions in education, health, and welfare across Kwara South, Kwara State as a whole and beyond, so as to reach some of the most neglected communities with life-changing assistance. |

The Societal Safety Network (SSN) has lauded the Chairperson of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), Dr. Muheeba Dankaka for introducing sweeping reforms in the commission. The group said that Dr Dankaka tenure at the helm of the FCC represented one of the most reform-driven and transparent eras in the history of the commission. In a statement on Friday by its Director, Public Relations, Comr. Suleiman Salahudeen, the Societal Safety Network (SSN) said: “We make bold to state that Dr. Muheeba Dankaka’s stewardship at the helm of the FCC represents one of the most reform-driven and transparent eras in the history of the Commission. Her tenure has been marked by uncommon courage, sweeping reforms, and a zero-tolerance approach to administrative rascality and internal racketeering that had, for years, plagued the Commission. “Under her leadership, several entrenched malpractices — notably the sale of job slots, contract scams, and internal trading of placement opportunities — were dismantled. This feat earned her both national recognition and expected resistance from those whose fraudulent privileges were disrupted.” It added that Dr. Dankaka has restored dignity, order, and credibility to a once-controversial commission. It listed some of the reforms to include: introduction of merit-based placement and transparency-driven procedures in federal character implementation; digitalisation of FCC Processes; rebranding of image of the FCC and elevated public confidence in its mandate and sanctioning of corrupt officers and sanitised the system of internal racketeering networks. The group said that Dr Dankaka ensured true representation of all federating units in recruitment exercises devoid of political, ethnic, or gender bias and carried out a comprehensive upgrade of the FCC National Headquarters in Abuja, creating a more functional, modern, and dignified working environment for staff and stakeholders. It called on President Bola Tinubu to remain unwavering in his commitment to rewarding sincerity, merit, and dedication to public service. The group added: “Dr. Dankaka’s reappointment will be more than a personal reward — it will serve as a national statement that good people still matter, and that resilient women in power will be protected and appreciated, not punished for doing what is right. “Dr. Muheeba Dankaka is not a product of political sponsorship. She is a woman of impeccable character, who has chosen the hard path of truth over the easy path of compromise. Her time as FCC Chairperson remains a turning point in the history of the Commission — a woman who straightened the bend and revived an institution drifting toward irrelevance. “The Societal Safety Network stands firmly behind her, and we urge all patriotic Nigerians — especially women, youth, and public servants — to resist the antics of desperate actors seeking to drag the FCC backward. “Let us protect our reformers. Let us defend the progress we have made. And above all, let us not turn our backs on the very women we encourage to lead.” |

Furthermore, MOK draws attention to a poignant appeal made by the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, urging leaders across the world to work towards de-escalating tensions, particularly in the conflict between Iran and Israel. He underscores the necessity of prioritizing global stability and lasting peace for the benefit of all humanity. In his message, MOK encourages Nigerian Muslims to renew their dedication to Allah during this holy month. He calls for individuals to embody the virtues of being God-fearing, law-abiding, and peaceful, thereby embodying the true spirit of Islam. Additionally, he specifically urges Muslims in Nigeria to observe the voluntary fasts of Tasu’a and ‘Ashura on July 4th and 5th, as prescribed by the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). MOK believes that participating in these acts of devotion will foster greater spirituality and community cohesion among believers during this blessed time. |
MOK, A Politician or A Philanthropist? By Abubakar Yinka Daud, ANIPR My paternal grandmother hails from the Balogun Gambari Compound, located just a stone's throw away from my family house in the Isale Kannike area of Ilorin. For most of my life, spanning approximately 34 years, I lived in close proximity to these two places before moving to Abuja five years ago for a federal job, I’ve remained attuned to the local happenings in that community. A few weeks ago, I returned home to celebrate Sallah. As I approached my family house, I noticed a prominent banner that read, “MOK Foundation Membership Registration Centre Here.” Initially, I overlooked it and didn’t think much of it. Later that day, while I was on my way to the Emir's Palace to visit my cousin, I spotted the same banner again, this time stationed right across from her shop in the bustling area of Isale Ago. This repetition piqued my curiosity, prompting me to ask my cousin what she knew about this MOK figure. After greeting her, I inquired in a casual Ilorin dialect, “Who is this man? What does he want?” She smiled and called over a woman nearby whom she identified as Iya Wura. With warmth, Iya Wura began to share her insights. “I don’t know him personally,” she began with a prayer, “but I recognize him through his countless contributions. He paid my daughter’s WAEC fees, covered her JAMB registration, provided cash donations for empowerment initiatives in Ajikobi, and even took care of the health bills for your sister’s daughter.” As Iya Wura concluded her remarks, she offered a final prayer for this generous man before returning to her shop. After she left, the curiosity about MOK overwhelmed me, leading me to conduct a quick online search about him. What I uncovered astonished me. His foundation was involved in a myriad of initiatives, including empowerment programs, solar energy provision, healthcare services, scholarships, and food distribution, among numerous others. The scope of his impact exceeded anything I had imagined. Once I returned home, I decided to dig even deeper into his contributions. To my surprise, I learned that he had also helped pay for the medical expenses of a close friend who had undergone surgery a few months prior. Eager to find out more, I asked around to see if anyone knew him personally. The unanimous response was that no one had met him face-to-face; instead, they attributed his generosity to his coordinators. Despite not knowing him personally, I joined my community in praying for this remarkable man. Just yesterday, while scrolling through Facebook, I stumbled upon another post dedicated to him. This one came from Muhammad Kabir, my friend from Kwara North in Kaiama. He expressed his gratitude with the message, “MOK, thank you for always giving us hope. Thank you for always helping us; we won't forget.” Inspired, I immediately reached out to Kabir via WhatsApp to learn more about MOK. He shared that the man’s intentions seemed to be purely philanthropic, devoid of any political motives. “He has never asked for anything in return,” Kabir emphasized, “He genuinely helps people without any conditions attached. He is a rare philanthropist.” Abubakar Yinka Daud, ANIPR National Assembly Complex, Abuja. |
Present Your Achievements to Your Constituents, Kwara South Youth Congress Tells Kwara South Lawmakers The Kwara South Youth Congress (KSYC), a prominent youth organization in the Kwara South region, has issued a press statement calling on the elected lawmakers from Kwara South to present their records of achievements over the last two years. This request comes in the wake of similar initiatives taken by lawmakers from Kwara Central and Kwara North, who have publicly shared their accomplishments during the same period. In a detailed press release by Adejare Bashir, the publicity secretary of KSYC, the organization expressed growing concern about the performance of lawmakers from Kwara South. The statement emphasized, "With a sober reflection, we urge our elected representatives in Kwara South, encompassing both the National Assembly and the State House of Assembly, to transparently present their scorecards for the past two years. We have observed that while lawmakers from other regions have made efforts to inform their constituents, our representatives in Kwara South seem to be silent on their legislative contributions." Bashir specifically mentioned the elected officials, including Senator Oyelola Isa Ashiru (Deputy Senate Leader, Senator Kwara South), Hon. Tunji Raheem Olawuyi (Member Federal House of Rep, Isin/Ekiti/Oke-Ero/ Irepodun federal constituency), Hon Tijani Ismail (Ifelodun, Offa, Oyun Fed constituency), Hon. Ojo Olayiwola ( Deputy Speaker KWHA, member representing Oke Ogun State Constituency), Hon. Abolaji Ganiyu Gabriel (Ekiti State Constituency), Hon. Ganiyu Afolabi Salahu (Omupo State Constituency, Hon. Owolabi Olatunde Rasaq ( Share/Oke-Ode State Constituency), Hon. Omotosho Olakunle Rasaq (Isin State Constituency), Hon. Yusuf Gbenga Abdulwaheed (Eesa/Shawo Constituency), Hon. Olushola Odetundun (Irepodun Constituency), Hon. Yusuf Toye Musa (Odo Ogun Constituency), Hon. Bamigboye Joseph Olajure (Oke-Ero Constituency) and Hon. Ogunniyi Joseph Oluwaseun (Ojomu/Balogun Constituency) . Bashir urged these representatives to provide an update on the successes and initiatives they have undertaken since taking office, pointing out that they were elected by the people and owe them accountability. Bashir highlighted the pressing concerns faced by the people of Kwara South, noting that the region has seen a worrying rise in criminal activities such as kidnapping. He remarked, "It is disheartening to acknowledge that not a single bill has been successfully sponsored by our National Assembly representatives in the last two years. Instead of focusing on impactful legislation, they appear to have diverted their attention towards bills that are unlikely to progress or reach the President's desk. In many instances, some lawmakers have chosen to remain silent in light of the escalating security threats in Kwara South." Turning to their counterparts in the State House of Assembly, Bashir criticized them for seemingly acting as a "puppet" to the state's executive arms of government. He emphasized that it is particularly troubling that, despite the challenges faced by constituents, the Governor has managed to pass more legislative measures than the representatives themselves.
