If we have Song, Jones won't ever be needed in the destruction role like he did in Madrid and some other big games. Song will carry out the assignment with great flair while utilizing the balls he won. He is strong on the ball under pressure, he guides the ball and doesn't give a panic pass. A player who plays safe and seat with defenders is more likely to make more accurate passes and concedes less dribbles than the ones who venture and try to deal with potential threats in the middle of the field than they become real threats in their own third or box.

Perhaps the reason Carrick and Mikel may not have had two many dribbles from opponents is that they shadow mark and sit with defenders, which gives too much room for opponents to use the ball. I for one prefer a Luis in DM to Mikel. If you beat Luis, he will chase you into trouble. You may even beat him but find yourself not able to utilize the ball meaningfully again.

this is because carrick/mikel are more intelligent to know interception is better than tackling. that's modern football and tacklers must adapt to the new rules like tackle from behind or stud showing. mikel/carrick carry more composure, they look to intercept rather than dive in and risk yellow/red cards.

You can't just discountenance Song like that by saying he failed in his primary duties, you have to look at it in the context of the team he is playing and his individual performance.

what is song's primary objective? to stop attacks or to cede position and assist goals? which is which? football is a game of tactics and intelligence. there has to be a balance otherwise managers should just field 10 strikers and one goalkeeper.

Gibson was a tough marker. He battled for every loose balls and did well in 50:50 balls. JS Park was a hard worker and a big game player. He combined well with teams mate in the middle and attacking build up. JS Park- Giggs- Carrick-Rooey were capable of locking the ball away while plotting a swift attack.

JS park was used mostly as a winger when he's here - he basically did what welbeck is doing. the only time he was used to curb a menace was against ronaldinho in 2009/10 season against milan.

Fletcher covers so much space the pitch and raised his game on big days. He was not easily beaten like Jones. Fletcher will chase you and interrupt you till you get confused. He easily won 50:50 balls and you have to forget it if it was an aerial battle. He had vital goals from his head.

darren fletcher hardly featured in the knock out stage of the champions league that season. he played a total of 19 mins from the quarter final stage till the final.
