The entire Nigerian student community in Donetsk, Ukraine, has been in state of mourning since last week due to the sudden death of two of us. While we mourn our dead, it has however been painful to watch the Ukrainian media portray a totally untrue account of what actually happened to the two Nigerians who died. Laolu Oresanya Teresa was a third year Electrical Engineering student of Donetsk National Technical University. She was admitted to the hospital on December 8, and was diagnosed by the doctors of having acute anaemia. Immediately after the diagnosis, money was paid to the hospital for the treatment that might be required. Oddly, the doctors never commenced serious treatment till December 12, saying she was under some medication and they were monitoring her. The next day, December 13, the news came that her situation was critical and she has been moved to the intensive care unit, where she later passed on at around 7:p.m. So the issue of not having money as painted in the Ukrainian media is not true. What is even more annoying and embarrassing is that the result of the diagnosis and that of the autopsy were opposite. Why the autopsy result indicated that she died of Sepsis, the doctors’ diagnosis claimed she died of acute anaemia. As for the second deceased, Obede Ogbu, he was a postgraduate Electrical Engineering student of Donetsk National Technical University. He died on December 18; his case was one of total neglect by the doctors. According to the doctors on duty, he was suffering from cardiac arrest; rather than give him the urgent attention needed, they abandoned him. When we tried to enquire why no attention was given to him, the doctors responded by saying we should give them five minute to smoke cigarette. When the situation became critical and a nurse rushed to call the doctors, it was too late for Obede Ogbu. The question many of us have continued to ask since then is whether the Ukrainian doctors would have left their own citizens in critical condition to smoke for five minutes. Would they have treated fellow European or Russian citizens the same way? There is no need for the Ukrainian media to twist the story, because neither our embassy in Kiev nor the federal government cares if we all perish in the hospital. The entire Nigerian students in Donetsk must be commended for having the courage to come out in large numbers to protest the uncaring attitude of Ukrainian doctors to Africans. Though we know nothing would be done to remedy the situation, at least, the truth deserves to be told. Comrade Ahmed Omeiza Lukman Donetsk National Technical University, Ukraine

Raif Badawi, a blogger in Saudi Arabia who has been imprisoned for violating the nation's anti-cybercrime law, was given the death penalty for apostasy by a higher court Wednesday, his wife told CNN. Badawi founded the Free Saudi Liberals website and was originally given a seven-year sentence in July. A Jeddah criminal court found Badawi, who has been in prison since June 2012, guilty of insulting Islam through his website and in television comments. His lawyer appealed the sentence, which also included 600 lashes. A higher court found him guilty of apostasy, his wife said. From April: Family pleads for blogger "It is an emotion I cannot describe. I never imagined this would happen," she said. "I thought maybe they would reduce the sentence but this is unimaginable. The whole thing is about a website." Badawi's legal troubles started shortly after he started the Free Saudi Liberals website in 2008. He was detained for one day and questioned about the site. Some clerics even branded him an unbeliever and apostate. Human rights groups accuse Saudi authorities of targeting activists through the courts and travel bans. Amnesty International has said Badawi's "is clear case of intimidation against him and others who seek to engage in open debates about the issues that Saudi Arabians face in their daily lives." CNN could not reach the Saudi Arabian government officials for comment. Badawi's wife, Ensaf Haidar, and the couple's three children now live in Lebanon.

A former Primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Dr. Peter Akinola, on Wednesday recounted his ordeal in the hands of the gunmen who abducted him, his daughter and driver on Tuesday in Abeokuta, Ogun State. He said that the armed men took them into a forest where they took off his shirt and shoes and then demanded dollars. The cleric, noted for his outspokenness on national and international issues, added that his driver was not as lucky as he was stripped down to his boxers. Akinola, who spoke to a congregation during a Christmas service in Abeokuta, said that his daughter, driver and himself, were rescued because of God’s benevolence. The retired cleric added that he had gone to the secretariat of the youth training centre he established in Abeokuta to give Christmas presents to the workers when two armed men appeared and whisked the three of them away . He said that in the forest, the gunmen insisted that he must give the dollars in his Sports Utility Vehicle. Expressing surprise at the rate with which the news of the incident spread, Akinola added that Governor Ibikunle Amosun and the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ikemefuna Okoye, personally led the search for their rescue. He said, “I left my house at about 11am (on Tuesday) for our site where we are building structures to train young people in Nigeria who are unemployed. The irony of it is that as I was coming out of the place where I had gone to give food to our workers for Christmas, two young men came out of their car from nowhere. They asked me to open the door, knocking the glass with their guns. “I instructed my driver, Jonah, to open the door for them. They sandwiched us at the back of the car and they drove off. They told us to put our heads down and that they would blow off our heads if we looked up. They drove for about an hour, where we didn’t know until we discovered that we were in a thick forest. Then I requested to talk and informed them that there was no enough fuel in the car. “They queried us for not having enough fuel in the car and my driver responded that we just returned from a journey. In the bush , I was surprised at how they were able to locate a filling station, bought N3,000 fuel and we continued with the journey. That was about 3pm. “They started asking questions about dollars but I said there was none. I told them I was a village pastor that had just retired and that the car was given to me by the church. They asked about the security of the car and I told them there was none. They searched for it for almost two hours but couldn’t find anything. “I was just praying for God of mercy to come to our rescue. I was just remembering how God saved some believers in the Bible and I concluded that if I must die, it must not be in the hands of these people. “Unknown to us, the news had started circulating and people had started praying. Meanwhile they had taken everything from us; they had taken my shirt, my shoes and I was left with only my singlet and trousers. But my driver was not so lucky; his shirt, trousers and shoes were taken and he was left with only his boxers. “They said I should walk; when we moved about hundred metres from the car, I was asked to take the left while my driver was asked to take the right. While inside the bush, I was hearing them threatening my driver. “After a while, we started hearing gun shots. Apparently, the police were around. Later, we learnt that the governor, the commissioner of police and the secretary to the state government led the rescue team. When we no longer heard any gunshot, I trekked back to the footpath calling my driver. “Not quite long, I saw them approaching me, I raised my hands and told them it was my car that they took and that I was looking for my driver. They said they were policemen and that I should come into the car. He commended the team which, according to him, engaged the gunmen in a gun battle before they regained their freedom. Akinola said, “The leader of the police team called TJ was a wonderful man. For the first time in my life, I doff my hat for the police for their performance. This same man, a Muslim, approached me and said they have heard about what I’ve been doing, that I should not stop, saying God has preserved my life for this purpose. “It was just beyond my imagination that I came back in peace but was worried about my driver whom I later found out was in a hospital.”

Back in May, we ran real estate blog Movoto's picks for the 10 most exciting (big) cities in America. It was an eclectic list, to be sure, and not without controversy. (Oakland came out as the No. 1 most exciting city in the nation. Nuff said.) Now they're taking a crack at ranking the most exciting small cities, or "mini metros," those with populations of about 50,000. They've tweaked the criteria a bit since last time around. This time, they aren't considering diversity as a factor, for instance, and they no longer care about how many Targets or Walmarts an area has. (The big-box retailers were negative indicators last time.) Instead, they're measuring how many of each of these the city has per capita: • Nightlife (bars, clubs, comedy, etc.). • Live-music venues. • Parks, outdoor activities and other "active-life options." • Fast food chains. This one is a negative indicator -- meaning a city scores better if it has fewer. And for their final two criteria, they're looking at the proportion of residents age 20 to 34 (the bigger the better) and the proportion of restaurants that are fast food (the smaller the better). You can click here to read more about their methodology on the Movoto blog. Again, their methods have yielded some surprises. Jersey, for example, makes two appearances on the list -- and so does a small city in Pennsylvania's Amish country. We don't know about you, but "exciting" and "Amish" are two words we don't hear together all that often. So take a look at the rankings, then tell us what you think: How'd Movoto do this time? 10. Sarasota, Florida The city placed first in the categories of live music and nightlife, but wayyyyy down the list at No. 88 for the youthfulness of its population. 9. San Marcos, Texas Its population of 20- to 34-year-olds is a very high 44 percent, and it offers a plethora of outdoor activities. 8. Royal Oak, Michigan Royal Oak didn't dominate any single category, Movoto says, but it "did quite well across the board," generally ranking in the 20s among its 100-plus competitors. 7. Lakewood, Ohio Lake Erie helps provide the outdoor fun that's key to the Cleveland suburb's high ranking, and the nightlife scene is "pretty happening" too, Movoto says. 6. Manhattan, Kansas The Kansas State University college town ranks third for its high proportion of young residents, and its nightlife offerings rank No. 15. 5. New Brunswick, New Jersey New Brunswick's showing is strong in the categories of non-chain restaurants and for nightlife. Movoto makes a point of mentioning Clydz, which "serves unusual fare including wild boar, rattlesnake, and kangaroo. Weird, yes, but undeniably exciting." 4. Lancaster, Pennsylvania Lancaster may be in Pennsylvania Dutch and Amish country, but it ranked seventh among 140 cities for its nightlife. And about a quarter of its residents are 20 to 34 years old -- making it 15th in that category. 3. Chapel Hill, North Carolina Its strong finish in the active-life category (No. 4) helped propel Chapel Hill, another college town, to third place overall. 2. La Crosse, Wisconsin La Crosse came in fifth for nightlife, 20th for active life and 11th for the youthfulness of its population. 1. Hoboken, New Jersey That's right: New Jersey not only took two of the top 10 spots, but it claimed the highest ranking of all. Almost half of its population is 20 to 34 years old, the biggest proportion of any of its competitors. It also ranked third for nightlife and fourth for the relative scarcity of fast food chains. |
A woman is lucky to be alive after she took one step too many while looking at her phone and had to be plucked from the water.8:59am UK, Wednesday 18 December 2013 St Kilda's Pier in Melbourne Police plucked the victim from the ocean close to St Kilda's pier. A young tourist in Australia was so engrossed in Facebook on her mobile phone that she walked off the end of a pier and had to be rescued by police. The woman was on St Kilda's pier in Melbourne when she was spotted falling into the chilly water of St Kilda's Bay by passers-by who called the police. Officers at the shore were able to point out the position of the distressed woman to water police units who rescued her about 20 metres (66ft) from the pier. When they got to her, she was still holding the phone in her hand, police said. The woman was browsing on Facebook at the time of the fall Senior Constable Dean Kelly told The Age newspaper: ''She wasn't splashing around too much. She wasn't in a panic even though she was in the water for probably 20 minutes." The woman had a backpack on, which may have helped her to stay afloat, he said. ''She wasn't a good swimmer but she was floating OK ... on her back." He added: ''She had a mobile phone in one of her hands and when we brought her on-board one of the first things she did was apologise and say sorry." It has been reported the woman was Taiwanese and in her mid-20s. She was taken to hospital for a check-up after the accident on Monday.

Nelson Mandela has topped Google's 2013 list of trending searches. The royal baby and iPhone5 were also in the top 10. The list comprises entries that have seen the largest increase in traffic compared with 2012. In a separate list of the most searched-for terms, Facebook was number one. The South African President Jacob Zuma on Monday unveiled a nine-metre bronze statue of Nelson Mandela with his arms outstretched to symbolise unity and reconciliation. “We laid Tata to rest in Qunu only yesterday and today Monday, he rises majestically at the seat of government, as a symbol of peace, reconciliation, unity and progress,” he said. Tata is the Xhosa word for father, and Mandela is revered as the father of the new South Africa born at the end of apartheid in 1994 when he became its first black president. Reuters reports that the 4.5 tonne statue was the largest of Mandela created in the world and was inaugurated on the lawn of South Africa’s hilltop ‘Union Buildings’, the seat of the central government, overlooking the capital Pretoria. The brown sandstone Union Buildings, built by British colonial architect Herbert Baker, were the site of Mandela’s swearing in as president nearly two decades ago. It was also the location where his body lay in state for three days last week as over 100,000 people paid their respects in person, before his state funeral in Eastern Cape The inauguration coincided with December 16 reconciliation day, commemorating the ideal of racial and political reconciliation that Mandela preached after his release in 1990 from 27 years in apartheid prisons. Reuters reports that under apartheid rule, Reconciliation Day had remembered the 1838 Battle of Blood River, in which some 500 Afrikaner pioneers defeated more than 10,000 Zulu warriors. But it was renamed in 1994 in a bid to heal the wounds of three centuries of white dominance.

emmanuelson20: This is really funny. How can you instruct a learner that he or she should be willing to learn within one week as everyone do not have similar degree of assimilation? Also instructing people must have a car? Technically, he or she is probably a good driver if anyone has a car. Is this suppose to be some kind of Tv or Online reality show that Someone should text in a convincing way of the need to learn how to drive? Lastly, are you a certified driving trainer? do you own a certified driving school? Please, be very careful of what you wish for as there are many ways to .........................You said it all! But Where are you going to get 19 extra hands to offer free driving lessons to 20 people if available? Are you interested in selling 20 or more cars? Do you have a connect at Cotonou? Or you have a target for the Christmas and New Year? This guy is hilarious! |
