"Igbo have complained of marginalization since the end of the civil war in 1970 and yet we have not played the real politics with other Nigerians to make ourselves relevant..." Joe Igbokwe So the politics they played by voting Shagari, Obasanjo, Yaradua and Jonathan is not real politics? It has to be Buhari, right? If this is not the height of sycophancy and brazen chalartanism...then what is it? |

Efforts to get officials of the Federal Ministry of Works in Enugu to comment failed. An official told The Guardian on condition of anonymity that; “We are controlled from Abuja. It will not be fair to speak unless they direct us to do so.” This is why there is need to give autonomy to regions...so they can do things for themselves... yet some parasites gaining from the rot in the structure of Nigeria, would tell you there is no need for restructuring...This is why the country is at the lowest rung of all index of measurement in the world... |
After the infamous Python Dance lI, you may be thinking that president Muhamadu Buhari would leave the lgbos in the cold, right? Well, you may be wrong because president Buhari plans to compensate war victims to the tune of of 50 billion Naira. This happening years after the civil war that lasted for 30 months and killed estimated 2 million people, (mostly the lgbos) is quite remarkable and therefore raising eyebrows. Buhari But government watchers were curious only to the extent that a retired army officer, Bala Yakubu, whose firm, Deminers Concept Nig Ltd , sued the federal government to the ECOWAS court on behalf of victims of the war, and will be benefiting from the largesse through the award of N38b worth of contract to clear the war zone of unexploded ordinances. But what might have escaped the radar of politicians and Nigerians in general, is that government might have seized the opportunity created by the case in ECOWAS court to embark on peace building with the easterners who have been dancing to the drum beat of secession. Perhaps the current unusual magnanimity towards the lgbos who have been crying out loudly about marginalization since the end of the civil war 47 years ago, is part of the strategy of defrosting the icy relationship between president Buhari and easterners who gave him only 5 (or is it 3%) votes in 2015 presidential election and are assumed to be bearing the brunt of casting most of their votes for the candidate that lost the election. Whatever the case may be, it is safe to conclude that with election 2019 in the horizon, CHANGE is beginning to take hold in terms of politics of inclusiveness as opposed to exclusiveness which was fuelling secessionist tendencies. APC party chairman, David Oyegun had put it crudely when a couple of months ago, he reportedly advised lgbo people to join the APC if they wanted to enjoy government patronage that would translate into prosperity. But President Buhari appears to be wooing the lgbos (After Arewa youths served them quit notice) by turning on his charm in a bid to convert them into his burgeoning political family via good deeds. The different approaches or strategies adopted in trying to get the lgbos to say YES to APC by the chairman of the ruling party and Mr President suggest a sort of bad cop, good cop scenario playing out. Whatever the case may be, it is worth recalling that it was Rochas Okorocha’s lmo state where governorship election was inconclusive in 2015, so a re-run was called and APC literarily pulled the rabbit out of the hat to give then presidential candidate Buhari the infamous ‘5%’ votes of the lgbos, which helped him clinch the presidency. South East Leaders led by the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu ((r) during a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House, Abuja. Photo by Abayomi Adeshida 13/10/2017 Going by Nigeria’s 1999 constitution, without the lgbo’s ‘ 5%’ votes , which enabled then candidate Buhari to fulfil the requirement that compels a presidential candidate to secure 2/3rd majority of votes of all Nigerians across the national spectrum before being declared the winner of a presidential contest , candidate Buhari could have remained unelected as he had been even after winning estimated 12 million votes mainly from the core north in three previous elections. By and large, the critical contribution that the paltry lgbo votes made to candidate Buhari’s electoral fortune, compared to the estimated 24% that Kano voters brought to the table, is a typical case of when the less becomes the more. But as it would appear, president Buhari might have considered only the face value of the 5% votes, hence he reportedly felt not indebted to the lgbos but only beholden to the northern and to some extent the south west voters who cast the majority of votes for him. That mindset probably informed the vile comment credited to president Buhari with respect to his plan to give unto the Igbos little government patronage that is proportional to the votes that he garnered from their zone. Sadly, that’s a narrative that has been giving fillip to the notion that the lgbos are being deliberately excluded from government . . It boggles the mind that in a society where perception can easily become reality, two and half years after the faux pax or Freudian slip by Mr president in far away USA found its way into public lexicon and discourse, nothing seem to have been done to debunk or confirm the gaffe until a couple of days ago. As a result, the whispers in the dark advanced from being mere conspiracy theory spurn by president Buhari’s competitors, to something like a statement of fact, which has been hanging over Aso Rock villa and APC like an albatross. So now that president Buhari is dangling the carrot ostensibly to harness or harvest the votes from the east to facilitate a win again for him or the party in 2019: would lgbos take the bait? It may be too early to tell, but suffice it to say that in a country where ‘stomach infrastructure’ occupies prominent position in the electioneering process, anything can happen. Already, president Buhari’s cabinet ministers from the east such as Chris Ngige, in charge of Labour and productivity, Ogbonanya Onu responsible for Science and Technology, who were Governors and as such had grass root following are getting their campaign machines into overdrive in their bid to convince their people that the grass is greener on the APC side. Similarly,Rochas Okorocha of lmo state which is the only lgbo state controlled by APC in the east and Orji Uzor Kalu, former Abia state governor who is a latter day APC convert and Buhari devotee, are also strutting the vast land of the lgbos stirring up positive emotions in the desperate bid to court ndi lgbo for president Buhari assuming he decides to seek re-election or for the APC candidate as the case may be. None typical politicians like Foreign affairs minister, Geofrey Onyeama and trade, commerce and industries minister Okechukwu Enelemah, who are originally from the private sector are also expected to weigh in with any clouts that they can muster to get their boss or party re-elected as the ruling party. Unfortunately, there are no lgbos heading influential or cash cow parastatals or agencies like NNPC, NPA, NCC,NCAA,NLNG, NIMASA,NDDC, amongst many other geese that lay the golden eggs to lend helping hands to the cabinet members from the east in the mission to capture the eastern votes. But if president Buhari in pursuit of his proposed expansion of federal cabinet and appointments into vacant board positions offers lucrative political appointments to more sons and daughters of lgbo, and promise to construct the second Niger bridge, and rehabilitate the badly dilapidated roads in the east, APC and president Buhari may make more inroads into the east.. Such is the power of give and take which is referred to in politics as horse trading. The Anambra state gubernatorial election is a referendum of sorts because on that occasion the lgbos would be taking steps towards choosing whether to remain outsiders which they seem to be now with the hope that one day a knight in shining armour would rescue and take them to another island where they will presumably be free or allow themselves to be properly wooed like a bride and get integrated into the scheme of governance in Nigeria. Trust me, what happens in Anambra on November 18, 2017 may be a window into the pattern of the general election in 2019.. The outcome of the recent local government election in Anambra state should be a pointer to the way the pendulum may swing in 2019 and therefore a wake up call. A similar situation is evolving in the USA where the democrats are crushing Republican Party candidates in the mid term election one year after the ascendancy of Donald Trump as the most controversial and polarizing president America has ever had. As a franchise holder of American presidential system of governance, would a similar scenario play out in Nigeria? Time will tell. ...it ‘ll subvert Nig’s Economic prosperity-Falana … ...Nig should effectively checkmate Morocco from ECOWAS-ARCAN … ...Nig should block Morocco now-NIIA By Emman Ovuakporie ABUJA-DISTURBED by the impending admission of Morocco into the Economic Community of West Africa States, ECOWAS, critical stakeholders on Thursday warned the Nigerian Federal Government to quickly checkmate such an entry as it will speed up disintegration of the Nigerian state. Falana Critical stakeholders speaking at a one day public hearing put together by the House of Representatives joint committees on Foreign Affairs and Cooperation for Africa Integration titled: “Public hearing on the Review of Nigeria’s Membership of ECOWAS In View of Morocco’s Bid to be Admitted Into the Regional Body” advised Nigeria to block Morocco’s Bid. Former Director General, Nigeria Institute of International Affairs, NIIA, Prof. Bola Akinterinwa , in his presentation to the Nnenna Elendu-Ukeje-led Foreign Affairs Committee said “any attempt to allow Morocco to join the Regional body will disintegrate Nigeria. Akinterinwa argued that he has 12points that could make Nigeria checkmate Morocco from joining “as it’s one of the most corrupt nations in the world going by the recent corruption index account.” Speaking almost in the same vein, representative of the Director General, NIIA, Prof Fred Agwu said “he who pays the piper dictates the tunes; Nigeria can block Morocco from ECOWAS. Activist lawyer, Femi Falana in his submission, told the stakeholders that “any attempt to allow the North African country to join ECOWAS will subvert Nigeria’s Economic prosperity. The National Vice President of Association of Retired Ambassadors of Nigeria, ARCAN, Ambassador.John Shinkaye, in his view advised the federal government to effectively checkmate Morocco now as its membership will spell doom for Nigeria. HE Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Saturday, declared that despite report claiming that the former chairman, Presidential Taskforce Team on Pension Reforms, Mr Abdulrasheed Maina, has been secretly reinstated into the Federal civil service, he is still a wanted person. Report by an online medium, PREMIUM TIMES, claimed that Maina, who was declared wanted by EFCC in 2015 for alleged fraud in the pension sector worth N195 billion, has been reinstated and promoted to the rank of Director, Human Resources in the Ministry of Interior. The report further claimed that Maina’s reinstatement into the Federal Civil Service might have been facilitated by the Minister of Interior and his Justice counterpart, Abdulrahman Dambazau and Abubakar Malami (SAN) respectively. Speaking on the development, EFCC’s Head, Media and Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren, told Sunday Tribune that Maina is still wanted by the anti-corruption commission. According to him, “Maina is still on the wanted list.” EFCC had declared Maina wanted over fraud allegations regarding the use of funds meant for Nigerian pensioners amounting to about N195 billion. The commission secured an arrest warrant against the former pension boss to enable it to arrest him anytime and anywhere he was. The anti-corruption commission was investigating how the biometric contract allegedly awarded to streamline pension administration under Maina actually became a conduit for stealing pension fund. As of the time the anti-graft agency declared the Borno State-born Maina wanted, he had allegedly run out of the country and was said to have been staying in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). In a bid to stop his arrest, Maina approach the court of law, seeking an order perpetual injunction restraining the EFCC from inviting, arresting or prosecuting him through a exparte motion dated February 14, 2013 pursuant to the fundamental human right enforcement rules 2009 and section 42 sub 3 of the 1999 constitution. He also sought the leave of the court to restrain the Senate President, Clerk of the Senate, the Senate, the Inspector General of Police and five others, preventing his arrest and prosecution pending the hearing and determination of the substantive motion. Justice Adamu Bello, who heard the motion, however, refused Maina’s motion, describing it as unethical. Maina was given the task to reform the country’s pension system by the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2010. He was a deputy director in the Ministry of Interior as of the time of his appointment by the administration. There was, however, a turn of events in 2012 when Maina was accused of fraud amounting to about N195billion in the pension sector. He was investigated by the Senate Committee on Public Service and Establishment and State and Local Government Administration. The committee issued a warrant of arrest against Maina for ignoring notices of appearance by the committee for him to appear before it to given testimony in its investigation. Consequent upon his going into hiding, the Federal Civil Service Commission dismissed Maina from service based on the recommendation of the the Head of Service of the Federation. Meanwhile, a source close to the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation also told the Sunday Tribune in Abuja that Maina was not sacked ab initio. The source asked one of our correspondents to further investigate what exactly happened to Maina before his disappearance. Professor Ben Nwabueze Chairman, the Patriots; Project Nigeria Movement; and Igbo Leaders of Thought has said that President Muhammadu Buhari owes it to the Nigerian people to admit that the divisions tearing the country apart are caused by his actions and utterances. Prof Ben Nwabueze and President Buhari Professor Nwabueze in Press statement said: ‘In an Interview with the Vanguard dated Monday, October 16 2017, Chief Emeka Anyaoku said: “Since the 1967 Civil War, I do not think this country has ever been as divided as it is now.” ‘This statement, coming from a man known for his unstinted objectivity on matters of public affairs, represents the undeniable truth about the situation facing our country today. There are separatist agitations for the Republic of Biafra, Niger Delta Republic and Oduduwa Republic. There is the Notice issued by the Arewa Youths Coalition to Ndigbo to leave the North by 1st October 2017. There is the menace of Fulani herdsmen rampaging the whole country, killing and maiming innocent people and destroying their farms and properties. These divisive events are pushing Nigeria to the brink of disintegration. ‘To these must be added the divisive turn or course the issue of Re-structuring is taking. Instead of a principled approach based on its merits and demerits as it affects the whole country as one entity, Re-structuring has divided the country into North and South, according to how it is perceived to affect the interests of the North, or, as it is put in a report in the Vanguard of 15 October, 2017, in order to “ensure that the North is not shortchanged” by Re-structuring. The interest of the North in the matter is defined to be to keep it (i.e. the North) “united” within a united Nigeria. The interest of the North, said Governor El Rufai of Kaduna State, is not Re-structuring, but to “address the dual challenge of poverty and deficiency in education in the region”. In his own contribution, even former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar said : “The North has nothing to fear [from Re-structuring] because we have the land, we have the population and we have the resources. The North has nothing to fear because oil will soon become history.” It is indeed lamentable that a matter touching on the vital interests of the whole country as one entity is being viewed and treated as a matter in which the interest of the North predominates and overrides everything else. But the critical question, which disquietens me deeply, is as to why the division along the lines mentioned above is occurring just at this time, during the 2½ years rule of President Buhari, and why they had not occurred at any other time during the 46 years since the end of the civil war in January 1970. This is a question the Presidency appears never to ask itself, as it should. It (i.e. the Presidency), busies itself instead in self-justification and self-praise and in issuing stern rebukes and threats of repressive action against those who threaten the unity of the country. The President constantly regales us with the hackneyed talk about the unity of the country not being negotiable, forgetting that the unity of the country is yet to be created by the coalescing of the over 300 ethnic nationalities comprised in Nigeria into one united nation. The game of self-justification and self-praise in which the Presidency constantly engages itself precludes self-examination, without which there can be no self-correction. President Buhari owes it to the Nigerian people to admit that the divisions tearing the country apart are caused by his actions and utterances; he should now begin the process of self-correction which involves the making of amends for his misguided past actions and utterances. His actions and utterances under reference manifest a pre-determined Islamisation/Northernisation Agenda with the war against corruption serving as a cover. The existence of such Agenda is not something conjured up just to discredit him; on the contrary, it is an irrefutable fact. His commitment to the Islamisation Agenda was heralded in a speech at a seminar organised by the Supreme Council of Sharia in Nigeria in August 2001 where he (Gen Buhari) publicly declared that he was committed to implementing Sharia law all over the country. The Islamisation Agenda was a significant factor in the APC presidential primary for the 2015 election. The voters at the said primary, the majority of whom were moslems from the North, wanted a presidential candidate whom they could confidently rely upon to implement the Sharia agenda, and so voted overwhelmingly for Buhari as the man to be relied upon for the job, giving him 3,430 votes, as against 954 votes for Atiku Abubakar, also a Moslem but not a diehard Islamist like Buhari. His position as a fervent apostle of the Islamisation/Northernisation agenda was re-affirmed in a speech he, as President-elect, delivered before an audience of exclusively prominent Northern Moslem leaders on 2 May, 2015 at Queen Amina Hall, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria. “I charge you”, he said with the ardour of a zealot, “to join me as we build a new Northern Nigeria in a generation ………the best investment we can make in the North is not finding oil in the Chad Basin……..we will start with one local government in each state until we get to every school in all of Northern Nigeria……. To achieve this, I have secured a Northern rehabilitation fund……..to rebuild the North after the devastation of Boko Haram insurgency…… Join me my brothers and sisters and let us finish the work our forefather, Ahmadu Bello, started.” This was coming from a President-elect who, in his Inaugural Speech, designed to charm and beguile his listeners, said : “I belong to everybody and I belong to nobody”? His actions under reference consisted in the main of appointments to strategic positions he made since assuming office as President on 29 May, 2015. Of the altogether 31 such appointments, 24 (or nearly 80%) go to Moslems from the North, 7 to the South, distributed 4 to the South-West, 3 to the South-South and nil to the South-East. To underscore the strategic nature of the 24 appointments, they include Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), National Security Adviser, Chief of Staff to the President, Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Chairman, Independent Electoral Commission, Managing Director, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Group Managing Director, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Inspector-General of Nigeria Police Force, Director, Department of State Security (DSS) and most of the top offices in that Department; Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC); nearly all the Service Chiefs – the South-East was again excluded from the appointment of the Service Chiefs. The Northernisation Agenda is further carried into action in the recent appointments to 15 top offices in the NNPC, distributed 10 to the North, three to the South West, two to the South-South, and Nil again to the South-East. The Islamisation/Northernisation Agenda, as it is faithfully being implemented by the Buhari Federal Government, shows that Government to be a government for one section of the country, the North, to be precise. It is not the all-inclusive government that Nigerians desire. These appointments, the concentration of 80 per cent of them in the North and the total exclusion of the South-East from them, is an affront to justice, social justice and equality in the administration of government. This is what you get when everyone wants to live in Lagos by fire by force. The number of ifesinashi buses shipping in IPOB almajiris to lagos on a daily basis is increasing by the day. These people have no economic plans in Lagos than to become traffic traders and okada riders. Once they are able to afford a room rent, they will start calling Lagos a no man's land like their mad fellows. They claim igboland has the highest mansions in the country yet they cant sit and thrive there. Their success in life is tied to Yoruba states yet they are always ungrateful and call Yoruba names at the least provocations.i support the clamp down on okada riders and fan yogo sellers. After all the population of yorubas riding okada is not up to 5%. These people must be dealt with so they can start respecting their host. The next clamp down should be on Alaba and Ladipo markets.
