Cheap labour

Operatives of the Federal Capital Territory Police Command and their military counterparts on Thursday repelled an attack on a branch of First Bank Plc and a police divisional headquarters located in the Abaji Area Council.

The armed robbers were said to have attacked both the bank and police divisional headquarters simultaneously on Thursday.

The armed robbers numbering 15 were said to have attacked their targets with dynamites.

However, security forces who were mobilised to the scenes engaged the criminals in a fierce gun duel, leading to the death of three of the armed robbers.


A statement on Friday by the FCT command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, added that some of the robbers fled the scenes with injuries while three were arrested.

She identified those arrested as Usman (surname yet unknown), Nuhu Musa, and Muhammed Aminu.


The statement read, “In swift response to an armed robbery incident at First Bank Plc in Abaji on June 13, 2024, at about 5pm, the FCT police, led by the commissioner of police, CP Benneth Igweh, himself, in a combined operation with the military, mobilised to scene and repelled the attack simultaneously carried out on both Abaji Divisional Police headquarters and First Bank Plc in Abaji by a group of 15 armed men who attacked with dynamites in attempt to rob the bank.

“The security forces engaged the armed robbers in an intense gun duel, forcing them to scamper to safety with various degrees of bullet wounds, as the security forces succeeded in apprehending three suspects, namely, Usman (surname yet unknown), who was reported to be the gang leader, Nuhu Musa, 41 ‘m’ of Kogi State; and Muhammed Aminu, 25 ‘m’ of Abaji, with grave degrees of bullet injuries, while a yet-to-be-identified suspect was set ablaze by an irate mob at the scene after being neutralised by the security forces.”

She noted that a police officer who was hit by a bullet during the operation was confirmed dead at the hospital where he was rushed to.

Adeh said, “One police operative and the gang leader hit by a bullet during the gun duel, were rushed to the hospital, and the doctor on duty confirmed them dead, while others are still receiving treatment.

“While a search operation is ongoing to apprehend fleeing suspects with bullet injuries, the commissioner of police FCT lauds the effectiveness of the combined operation and reaffirms the command’s unflinching commitment to ensuring that FCT remains inhabitable for criminals, noting that the safety of the residents of FCT is non-negotiable.”

Between 2019 and 2021, agricultural products accounted for more than one-third of the total value of global commodity exports. This graphic ranks the most agriculturally-export-dependent countries in the world, using data from UN Trade & Development (UNCTAD).

For this graphic we have only included countries where agricultural products represent more than 75% of its total exports. Resource dependency can make a country vulnerable to economic shocks via price fluctuations.

In Micronesia, a staggering 98% of all its exports are agricultural, of which 89% are fish in various forms. In fact, five of the top 10 countries are small island nations in the Pacific. Four of them also have fish as their top agricultural export.

Maldives, in the Indian ocean, is also within the top 10. Its top agricultural export is also fish. Interestingly, the Observatory of Economic Complexity states “Planes, Helicopters, and Spacecraft” as Maldives’ top overall export in 2022 ($433M). However, it’s possible that this might be a case of re-exportation.

Aside from fish, various kinds of nuts and edible oils are also popular categories of agricultural exports.

Russia is allegedly sending thousands of migrants and foreign students to fight alongside its troops in the war against Ukraine for visa renewal, reports Bloomberg.

According to the Business news platform, the assessment was done by some European officials who alleged that the Kremlin is doing so to add extra manpower using the tactics first deployed by the Wagner mercenary group.

The report added that Russia has been threatening not to extend the visas of African students and young workers unless they agree to join the military, according to officials familiar with the matter.

Moscow has also been enlisting convicts from its prisons while some Africans in Russia on work visas have been detained and forced to decide between deportation or fighting, one European official said. Some of those people had been able to bribe officials to stay in the country and still avoid military service, said the official, who, like other people cited, spoke on condition of anonymity.

Russia’s practice of sending migrants and students into battle under duress dates back to earlier in the war, another European official said. Those troops suffer especially high casualty rates because they are increasingly deployed in risky offensive maneuvers to protect more highly trained units, the official added.

A spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry didn’t respond to an email seeking comment.

According to reports citing Ukrainian intelligence, Russia has engaged in a global recruitment drive to enlist foreign mercenaries in at least 21 countries, including several nations in Africa. Army recruitment campaigns offer lucrative signing bonuses and salaries for those who’ll join up as contract soldiers. Recruiters have also targeted migrants and students who previously looked for employment in Russia, and in some cases have lured others over with promises of lucrative work before forcing them to train and deploy to the front.

Russia’s ability to mobilize far greater numbers of troops could become a significant factor in the war as President Vladimir Putin seeks to capitalize on a shift in momentum this year.

For now though, his forces have been grinding forward only slowly in northeastern Ukraine and suffering heavy losses, despite a shortage of troops and ammunition on the Ukrainian side.

The Russian military lost more than 1,200 people a day during May, according to the UK Ministry of Defence, its highest casualty rate of the war. Since the beginning of the invasion, Russia has seen some 500,000 personnel killed or wounded, the UK estimates. Bloomberg is unable to independently verify these figures.

At a meeting with foreign media in St. Petersburg late Wednesday, Putin appeared to imply that about 10,000 Russian troops a month are being killed or wounded and that Ukrainian losses are five times higher.

While the Kremlin has failed to achieve a breakthrough on the battlefield, it has stepped up a bombing campaign against Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city. Western officials say those attacks appear designed to make the city uninhabitable.

As he seeks to maintain public support in Russia, Putin has so far resisted a full-scale mobilisation and Russia says it has been able to make up a significant share of its losses — in terms of numbers if not the standard of the troops — through a voluntary recruitment drive that has attracted tens of thousands of people.

The government in Kathmandu said earlier this year that it is aware of about 400 young Nepali men who have been recruited by Russia but many more have likely signed up without the government knowing. India’s decision to stop recruiting Nepalese Gurkhas for its army, ending a 200-year-old tradition, may have encouraged Nepalis to look for work in Russia and elsewhere.


A senior Ukrainian official said they have seen an uptick in the number of foreign fighters among the prisoners Ukraine has captured on the battlefield. Africans and Nepalis have been particularly common, they said.

Some of Ukraine’s allies have been considering sharing what they know with the affected countries, another European official said.

Group of Seven nations, who will hold a leaders’ summit in Italy next week, have been trying to persuade countries from the so-called Global South to offer more support to Ukraine. But many of those nations have instead remained neutral, while their populations have been a focus for Moscow’s disinformation efforts.

Reuters reported last year that the mercenary group Wagner had recruited several African citizens as part of a drive to enlist convicts from Russian prisons for its forces in Ukraine. The news agency traced the story of three men from Tanzania, Zambia and the Ivory Coast.

There are 35,000-37,000 African students currently in Russia, according to Yevgeny Primakov head of Rossotrudnichestvo, an organization devoted to spreading knowledge about Russia abroad.

“Every year we sign up about 6,500 students from Africa to study in Russia for free,” he said on Thursday at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has urged the Appeal Court to restore the bail granted to him by an Abuja Federal High Court.


Kanu also faulted the ruling of the appellate court for refusing his transfer from the facility of the Department of State Services (DSS) to Kuje prison.

In 2017, the Federal High Court in Abuja granted Kanu bail on treasonable felony charges filed against him by the federal government. However, the court revoked Kanu’s bail and issued a bench warrant for his arrest after he failed to present himself as required.


In 2021, Kanu was rearrested in Kenya and extradited to Nigeria. In April 2022, Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court struck out eight of the 15 counts in the charge. The remaining seven counts were also quashed by the Court of Appeal on October 13, 2022, with the judge ordering Kanu’s release.

However, on October 28, 2022, the Appeal Court in Abuja granted a stay of execution on its verdict discharging Kanu after the federal government filed an appeal at the Supreme Court.

On December 15, 2023, a five-member panel of the Supreme Court reversed the verdict of the Appeal Court and ordered Kanu to resume his trial before the Federal High Court.


On May 20, 2024, refusing Kanu’s application to restore his bail in line with the Supreme Court ruling, Justice Nyako entered an order modifying the conditions of counsel visitation to Kanu.

However, Kanu’s lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, faulted Justice Nyako’s ruling on four grounds.

The notice by Ejimakor sent to DAILY POST reads: “TAKE NOTICE that the Appellant, being dissatisfied with the ruling of the Federal High Court, Abuja Division, coram: B.F.M Nyako, J. delivered on the 20th May, 2024, more particularly set out in Paragraph 2, does hereby appeal to the Court of Appeal, Abuja upon the grounds set out in Paragraph 3 below and will at the hearing of the Appeal seek the reliefs set out in Paragraph 4 of this Notice of Appeal.


“The part of the decision/ruling relating to the refusal of the trial court to transfer/remand the Appellant to a safe place of custody; or restore/reinstate his bail.”

Ejimakor said the learned trial court erred when it misdirected itself on the facts and otherwise failed to properly evaluate the evidence when it wrongly held that: “on the issue of the transfer of the Defendant/Applicant to another place of custody, I have found and held that the present place of custody of the Defendant is a proper place of custody” and which decision led to a miscarriage of justice against the Appellant.

He pointed out that the court “misdirected itself or otherwise failed to evaluate the evidence showing that the current place of detention of the Appellant, being hostile or inimical to his constitutional right to a fair trial, is ipso facto, not a safe or proper place of custody, particularly with regard to the following.”


He said the learned trial court erred in law when it refused to grant Kanu’s application upon the implicit finding that the room at the DSS detention facility where Kanu meets with his counsel is not a safe and “clean” room for the Appellant to prepare for his defense.

The lead counsel said the learned trial court erred in law when it failed to exercise its “discretion in favor of the application of the Appellant and in that respect occasioned a miscarriage of justice.”

Ejimakor said the trial “court misdirected itself on the facts when it held that “having found that the defendant jumped bail, and had forfeited the surety’s bonds and discharged them from the bond and the sureties having gone on appeal on the same issues, I cannot take any steps until the outcome of the appeal.”

In his reliefs sought, Ejimakor urged the Appeal Court to “allow this appeal and set aside the decision of the trial court made on the 20th day of May, 2024.

“An order restoring/reinstating the bail of the Appellant on the same terms as earlier granted; or an order restoring/reinstating the Appellant’s bail on any new terms and conditions.

“An order remanding the Appellant to an alternative place of custody or home detention/house arrest that can accord the Appellant the atmosphere to have a fair trial.

“Any order the Honourable Court of Appeal deems fit to make in the circumstances of this appeal.”

La Marseillaise (France)
“La Marseillaise” was composed by Claude-Joseph Rouget de Lisle, an amateur musician, and captain of the engineers, one night during the French Revolution on April 24, 1792.

Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, has urged Nigerians experiencing hard times to call on God for help.

Adeboye stated this at RCCG headquarters in Ebute-Metta on Sunday during the June thanksgiving service with the theme, ‘Lifter Up of My Head’.

He said, “If you need provision, if things are hard and I know things are hard for quite a few of us, call on the one whose name is Jehovah El-Shaddai, the God who is more than enough.

“Call on Him – the one who is more than enough and He will meet your needs…He has many ways, depending on what is your need.

“When all ways are blocked, call on Him who is called the way when you don’t even know what’s going on.”

The organized labour had embarked on the strike to push for an improvement in the minimum wage of workers.

While the organized labour is proposing N494,000 as new minimum wage, the Nigerian government is insisting on paying N60,000.

In a last minute move to stop the strike, leaders of the National Assembly and organized labour met yesterday.

The meeting, however, ended in a deadlock as the organized labour insisted on the commencement of the strike.

Speaking after the meeting, TUC President, Comrade Festus Osifo said the organized labour will never call off the strike without consulting its members.

“It is difficult and infact impossible for us as labour leaders, to call off the strike here. We need to communicate with our various organs , meaning that, the industrial action starts on Monday as planned,” he said.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has once again issued a stern warning to Nigerians regarding the hazardous practice of using dangerous chemicals to preserve food items.

This is contained in a statement issued by the NAFDAC Resident Media Consultant, Sayo Akintola on Sunday, June 2 in Abuja.

Specifically, the agency has emphasised the dangers associated with dichlorvos, a chemical commonly utilised by traders to safeguard food from spoilage.

The sale of small volume dichlorvos (100 ml or less), sold as Sniper® has been banned since 2019 while the sale of the large volume (one litre) is limited to certified agrochemicals outlets.

NAFDAC underscores the toxicity of dichlorvos to human health, cautioning that its use can have fatal consequences.

In response to a viral video showing individuals using dangerous chemicals to preserve food items like beans, stockfish, and crayfish, the Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, urged traders and merchants to desist from using unauthorized chemicals on food meant for human consumption.

The misuse of dichlorvos poses significant risks to human health, manifesting in both short-term and long-term consequences. Long-term exposure can result in severe health implications, including developmental abnormalities in offspring, memory loss, reduced fertility, and potential carcinogenic effects.

“These adverse effects highlight the importance of adhering to safety guidelines to mitigate the risks associated with dichlorvos exposure.

The Director of Veterinary Medicine and Applied Products (VMAP), Dr. Rametu Momodu, reiterated that using certain chemicals, especially pesticides, to protect grains and prevent beans from having weevils is not an approved practice.

She explained that there are approved pesticides for use as fumigants, which should be used according to the manufacturer’s specifications on the product label. She stressed that these products should not be applied directly to food due to their inherent dangers to human health.

Dr Momodu further elaborated that consuming food contaminated with dichlorvos can cause dizziness, vomiting, difficulty breathing, tremors, and convulsions, and in some cases, can lead to coma and death.

She warned that once used, pesticide residues remain on or in the food, posing significant health risks. Washing the food does not mitigate the risk, as the harmful substance would have already soaked into it. She emphasised that the Agency cannot recommend washing as a solution, as it gives a false sense of security.

Instead, she urged grain merchants, market vendors, and farmers to adhere strictly to manufacturer guidelines and refrain from directly applying dichlorvos to beans and other foodstuffs. It should be used as intended, either as a field crop treatment or a fumigant, to ensure food safety. She also advised consumers to avoid buying from vendors known to use such practices and to report them to the nearest NAFDAC office for appropriate sanctions.

The Director General, Prof. Adeyeye emphasised alternative methods for preserving food, mentioning the use of bio-pesticides as a safer option compared to dichlorvos. She noted that food remaining unspoiled for an extended period might indicate pesticide contamination rather than freshness, unless stored in the refrigerator.

In addition to the banning of the 100 ml size bottle as stated above, the Director General disclosed that NAFDAC has implemented several initiatives such as stakeholders’ sensitisation meetings on restricting the direct application of dichlorvos on grains and foodstuffs and thorough laboratory testing to ensure pesticide residues do not exceed maximum limits for both in-country consumption and for exports. Routine monitoring of stakeholders is also conducted to ensure compliance.

Prof. Adeyeye highlighted continued NAFDAC’s commitment to global best practices, including the phase-out of certain pesticides that have been banned in other countries due to proven toxicity. She acknowledged the challenges faced by farmers due to bans on various chemicals and emphasised the importance of transitioning to safer alternatives.

Addressing misconceptions about banned chemicals being dumped in Nigeria, she clarified that comprehensive lists have been provided to the media to dispel such notions.

How to tell if you're hydrated
Hydration needs vary based on your size, activity level and how much you sweat. Gabriela Barreto, a registered dietitian and sports nutritionist says there are two indicators of hydration level: your thirst and the color of your urine. "Drinking to thirst can be appropriate for most individuals to maintain their hydration levels and as for urine, you're looking for a pale yellow color," says Barreto. Barreto recommends that besides food and water, a hydration supplement such as Skratch can benefit individuals with active jobs and people who work out or spend a lot of time in the heat outdoors. "I recommend a hydration product with 300 to 500 milligrams of sodium and preferably about 20 grams of carbohydrates." Keep in mind an electrolyte drink without carbohydrates will help with rehydration, too, just not as efficiently. So make sure to read the labels first to choose the best option for your needs.


Which foods are most hydrating?
Most foods contain some amount of water, but it probably won't surprise you to learn that fruits and vegetables are at the top of the list.

To get the most out of these hydrating fruits and vegetables, make sure you follow standard dietary guidelines. Barreto says, "Dietary guidelines recommend two to three servings of fruit and three to four servings of vegetables for most adults." There are no specific guidelines for hydrating fruits and veggies, but by eating the daily recommended amount of produce you will be adding to your hydration, she says.

It is estimated that 20% to 30% of fluid needs can come from food, including fruits and veggies. By combining certain foods, you can boost your hydration. "When looking to adequately rehydrate, carbohydrates, fluid and sodium are key," says Barreto, adding, "Carbohydrates are important for optimizing water and sodium absorption in the body."

Watermelon and other melons

Watermelon isn't just a fruit that is synonymous with summer, it's also highly hydrating. It's made up of 92% water and has antioxidants, important nutrients like vitamins A and C, magnesium, fiber and lycopene (a pigment found in red, yellow or orange-colored fruits and vegetables). Other melons such as cantaloupe are also made up of 90% water and are a good source of potassium, folate, as well as vitamins A and C.

Barreto says one hydrating summer recipe to try is a cucumber and watermelon salad with lime, mint and salty feta. As previously mentioned, the sodium and carbohydrates will help the body easily absorb the water from the fruit. Barreto points out that for this reason, you'll also notice some sports dietitians recommend sprinkling some salt on your watermelon.

Cucumbers
Cucumbers are made up of 95% water and consist of vitamins like vitamin K, magnesium and potassium. This refreshing veggie can be easily added to salads, sandwiches, water or eaten on its own. Its high water content also makes it a low-calorie vegetable and is an ideal food to add to your diet if you're looking to lose weight and feel full longer.

Squash
This versatile vegetable does well as an addition to soups, stir-fries, salads and as a side. Popular summer squashes like zucchini are a good source of vitamin C, potassium and fiber and are made up of 94% water. The high water and fiber content will keep you full and hydrated for an extended period.

Strawberries
This popular summer fruit is full of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals like vitamin C, manganese and folate. It's an easy fruit to add into smoothies, yogurt, salads or eat on its own. Strawberries are made up of 91% water, making them the perfect fruit to quench your thirst and satisfy your sweet tooth.

Banks, courts and schools in Port Harcourt and its environs are shut in compliance with the nationwide strike declared by the Nigerian Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress.

Organised Labour commenced the strike following the inability of the Federal Government to reach an agreement on a new minimum wage.

Our reporter who went around reports that all banks along the stretch of Ikwerre Road, Aba Road, Trans-Amadi and Olu Obasanjo Road are shut.

Some bank customers were seen trying to use the Automated Teller Machines along the Trans-Amadi and Olu-Obasanjo Roads, but many were not dispensing cash.


Also, students of the Government Secondary School, Borikiri and Community Secondary School, Pabod both in Port Harcourt were asked by the school authorities to go back home, as the students were seen trekking long distances; even as they were playing on the road.

Asked, one of the students of CSS, Pabod, Port Harcourt said, “Our Principal asked us to go home that they are on strike. ”

At the Rivers State Judiciary Complex, Azikiwe Road and the Customary Court Court Complex the strike was total as the gate was shut.

Members of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria mounted canopies in front of the judiciary complex with chairs chatting.

Speaking to our correspondent, the State Secretary of JUSUN, Rosemary. Mbata said their action complied with the union’s national directive.

Mbata stated, “This place was shut as early as 6.30 am today. It is because of the failure of the Federal Government and labour to agree on a new minimum wage.


“We know every matter that comes to the court here is important and pressing but they too should understand with us that we are on strike. It’s nationwide, not just in Rivers State.

” So the FG should listen to us and do the needful. ”

The situation was not different at Rivers State Secretariat which houses all the ministries, as the gate was locked preventing civil servants from accessing the place.


The state Chairman of the NLC, Alex Agwanwor, in an interview with our reporter, expressed happiness that compliance with the strike is total.

Agwanwor, further said a monitory team put in place by the organised labour in the state is going around, saying the Port Harcourt Refining Company and other companies are also shut.

He stated, “There is 100 per cent compliance and we are monitoring too. Our monitoring team are on the ground to ensure that workers comply.

“Both the Federal and State Secretariat are under lock and key. Workers in banks, and the oil and gas sector, like the Refinery and petrochemical Company, have no choice but to comply. It’s a national directive so the enforcement will continue until further notice.”

However, at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, the situation was different as work was going on with staff attending to patients, and the latter seeing doctors assigned to them.

An official who spoke to our correspondent said they had yet to receive any directive to embark on a strike.
