You just gave one corroborating example of what constitutes a significant percentage of part of the problem.

Some women have been conditioned to see men primarily as providers and for social status, to the point where a man becoming less useful financially can affect how they perceive him, even when he has done nothing wrong.

When they enter marriage seeing their husband primarily as just a provider, then his value to her becomes tied to what he can provide. And if that is the foundation of the relationship, what happens when the dynamics change?

This is why I think where people's ideas of marriage come from matters. If both people enter marriage seeing each other as partners, then one person's success should not automatically make the other less valuable. But if the relationship is built around what each person can get from the other, then either person's growth can become a problem.

See the many cases we have read on Nairaland where Nigerian women finally reach the UK via their spouse's sponsorship, reach a point where they feel they are now financially capable to be independent, then the misbehaviour begins.

Hypergamy is many women's primary objective for marriage, every other thing for such women are always secondary.

Across all cultures, women overwhelmingly marry up mostly, hypergamy as you put it

Part of the problem is where their ideas of marriage come from.

From childhood, storybooks and novels condition their minds to believe in happily ever after, while reality TV and social media nowadays keep selling them content made by every Blessing CEO, Nons Miraj orishirishi's scattered all over the internet that influence their behaviour and decisions.

People enter marriage with expectations they have never really questioned and to me, it starts with the conditioning of the mind and what is responsible for that conditioning.

People that lean towards traditional roles will advise women to be submissive and keep their husbands, while some feminists also lean towards never compromising, as if compromise itself is a threat to women's independence, when none of their script matches reality.

A woman can chase her dreams and have a fulfilling marriage, but only if her husband is also willing to make room for them, just as she should support his own. Both should enter marriage expecting to work together, not a default outcome of their expectation assuming things will automatically work out as they expect.

To me, advice aimed only at women misses half of the equation.
