With technology and most importantly social media as well as mobile technology, reaching out to service providers to have issues resolved has gotten much easier within the last decade compared to the decades before and for a fact that much of the communication on the Internet is taking place on social media platforms. Nigeria has roughly 28 million social media users as of 2020, according to Statista, which is proof that social media can be a great avenue to reach people. There is also the part where people spend more time on social media. Where should businesses meet their users and subscribers if not where they frequent? For instance, Statista puts the share of Nigerian social media users that use the instant messaging app WhatsApp at 93%, the highest of all social media and instant messaging platforms in Nigeria. WhatsApp is ahead of the likes of Facebook and Twitter with 86.2% and 61.4%, respectively. The increasing adoption of social media platforms has given rise to their use as a medium of resolving complaints as they are a more efficient and cost-effective means, to both customers and brands, of providing customer support compared to the more expensive traditional phone call. Businesses across all industries have come to terms with the role of social media to provide unparalleled customer support better. And DStv, as the biggest satellite-TV platform in Nigeria, is not left out of this trend. Before the Nigerian Government’s Twitter ban in June 2021 for instance, the microblogging platform became one of the primary ways to measure companies’ transparency online as companies have the opportunity to showcase how responsive they can be in attending to complaints about their products or services. DStv seems to have gotten a handle on this. Prior to the ban, DStv Nigeria’s customer support on the microblogging platform Twitter was available for 13 hours daily on weekdays and a little less on weekends. A mention of the DStv handle on Twitter a few weeks ago will have customers’ issues resolved or questions answered in no time. WhatsApp, as the most common instant messaging app being used by Nigerians, is not left out. DStv is using WhatsApp as a self-help channel for customers to support in resolving issues in no time. If a subscriber chooses not to use any of the above options, the (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) USSD option is also a perfect channel for those without smartphones. There is also a chat feature on its website to access support. All the available means that DStv has provided to access support services is proof that folks at the entertainment giant have put a lot of thought into ensuring that there are enough communication channels for its subscribers – especially the highly demanding Nigerian customer. DStv also seems to be going beyond social media and instant messaging apps for customer service support through its native DStv mobile app for resolving issues. Account management, package upgrade, and downgrade, and subscriptions can also be done on the app and every other channel. Sustaining good customer service through these channels will ensure that DStv maintains its dominant position as Nigeria's leading Cable TV service, while also getting a substantial share of the 10 million satellite-TV subscribers that the country is expected to have by 2025 as forecasted by Africa satellite TV Forecasts. |
Beyond being the third biggest movie industry globally in terms of the number of movies released yearly, Nollywood has also been a leading window through which the world saw Nigeria, its people and culture over the last three decades. DStv’s introduction of Africa Magic in 2003 has further amplified Nollywood’s growth and reach through the production and international distribution of high quality original local content – films and TV shows, as well as other activities that have developed the ecosystem. With respect to content creation, a measure of the socio-economic impact of DStv business in Nigeria between 2015 and 2019 done by a top accounting and consulting firm in Nigeria, Accenture, revealed that the entertainment giant contributed an estimated $2.1 billion (about ₦800 billion according to 2019’s exchange rate) to the Nigerian economy in five years. The satellite-TV platform is not only playing an important role in developing and pushing Nigerian content to the world, DStv is also serving as a window to the world for Nigerians through the international media platforms on its platform. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic earlier in 2020, MultiChoice Group entered into a partnership with Euronews Group to have Africanews, a pan-African multilingual news channel on its platforms: DStv and GOtv. Africanews is joining other major news channels like CNN, Sky News, BBC and Euronews that were already on DStv, making it the go-to platform for accessing quality reportage from global news channels. This is in addition to major Nigerian news channels on the platform, ensuring that subscribers have access to up-to-date news reportage from local, regional, and international media houses. With regards to news channels on cable-TV platforms, none come close to DStv Nigeria’s news channel catalogue in the Nigerian market. Beyond news channels, DStv Nigeria is also playing an important role in promoting and showcasing local sporting activities. Within a space of about seven years, the company committed $70 million towards the developing and building capacity within the Nigerian Football League. , “We also made it possible for our local leagues to be watched on SuperSport across the country, growing audiences and love for the sport in Nigeria,” John Ugbe, DStv Nigeria CEO said in a 2020 interview with BusinessDay. Aside football, which is the biggest sport in the country and the world at large, DStv Nigeria’s commitment in sport in the country also includes developments of the likes of local basketball, boxing, among others. “We will continue to make great entertainment more accessible to Nigerians by delivering quality sports and local content to our customers,” Ugbe affirmed while commenting on the past commitments of the company. Away from news and sporting activities, DStv is also a key part of the video-on-demand market in spite of the influx of other players which hasn’t affected the entertainment giant's role in the market. The move by Netflix to start acquiring Nollywood movies as well as creating original Nollywood content is worthy of note. Still, the American media company’s investment in content acquisition and creation in Nigeria cannot rival that of DStv, which has produced hundreds of original titles – film and TV series in Nigeria since 2003. . Accenture’s report that measured the contribution of DStv Nigeria to the nation’s economy between 2015 and 2019 alone is proof that the West African nation is one of the markets that get a substantial share of the annual expenditure on local content creation by the company. In May 2021, MultiChoice launched the Afro-Cinema Channel on DStv to celebrate the continent’s diversity while also showcasing and celebrating contemporary African films in commemoration of Africa’s Day. According to Ugbe, the entertainment giant wanted to celebrate the talents and resilience of the continent’s film industry with the launch of the channel. Ugbe affirmed that the COVID-19 pandemic hit the film industry quite hard, which the African filmmakers are part of, hence the need to appreciate and celebrate players in the industry as well as their work. |
After considering the part of affordability when choosing any service or product to purchase, one other point to consider is getting an affirmative answer to how reliable the product or service is. The number of subscribers on the DStv network, which keeps growing, lays credence to the entertainment giant’s reliability as a source of entertainment to everyone in the family irrespective of age and interest. The reliability is not only peculiar to services accessible through a decoder, subscribers that choose the streaming option can also count on how the service is consistently of good quality. Unlike other players in the cable-tv industry in Nigeria, DStv periodically upgrades its system for better service delivery to its subscribers. And interestingly, these upgrades don’t prevent people from accessing content on its platforms which points to the fact that DStv takes quality service delivery seriously anytime. The pan-African media giant is riding on technology to provide better services to its subscribers in Nigeria as well as its other markets. There’s also the part of the large war chest for content creation and distribution geared towards better service delivery to subscribers across all its platforms. MultiChoice has “enriching lives” as one of its pillars which is evident in products, services, as well as corporate social responsibilities. Earlier in the year, Calvo Mawela, CEO of MultiChoice Group, in a CNN interview, revealed that the company spends over US$145 million annually on local content creation across the continent. The entertainment powerhouse has, over the years, been making efforts towards ensuring continuous reliability of its services to subscribers. Some of these efforts include using mobile technology like the DStv Now that was launched as a mobile-first product for Android and iOS smartphones and tablets. The company has since dropped the “Now” in the name of the product and is now available for smart television as well. The product allows subscribers to access DStv online anywhere and anytime at no additional cost to the subscribers. The number of smartphones in Nigeria that was 23.3 million in 2019 is expected to be 154 million by 2025. This can be considered as a great opportunity for entertainment service providers like DStv who have been using technology, including mobile, over the years to provide quality service and at the convenience of its subscribers. DStv is riding on the fact that Nigeria, like other countries in Africa, is a mobile-first market by designing its offerings accordingly. Beyond trying to serve the customers at their convenience, no other cable-TV platform in Nigeria is investing heavily into local content production like DStv. As of 2012, the Nigeria-South Africa Chamber of Commerce affirmed that DStv had invested $200 million (about ₦31 billion, according to the exchange then) in developing local skills, technology transfer, local workforce, and production of local content. This is outside the $2.1 billion (about ₦800 billion in 2019’s exchange rate) that Accenture, an accounting and consulting firm in Nigeria, estimated to be DStv’s contribution to Nigeria’s economy between 2015 and 2019. In his comment about the company’s $2.1 billion contribution to the economy, MultiChoice Nigeria CEO, John Ugbe affirmed that the entertainment giant has a responsibility towards providing socio-economic value through its core business activities in the country. Beyond the figure quoted by Accenture, Ugbe in a 2020 interview revealed that the company had invested about Seventy Million Dollars towards developing the Nigerian Football League over the course of seven years. All MultiChoice Nigeria’s efforts point to the fact that the company wants to keep ensuring that its customers always have access to quality content that is also delivered hassle-free. |

The Kaduna State government has said that it intends to recruit 3,059 primary healthcare workers to improve healthcare delivery in the state. The Executive Secretary of the state Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr. Hamza Abubakar, disclosed this on Wednesday when a coalition of non-governmental agencies in the state, under the aegis of Partnership for Advocacy in Child Health @Scale (PASA) paid a visit to the Ministry of Health. Abubakar disclosed further that the state Governor, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, has approved the purchase of contraceptives and family planning commodities worth over N300 million. He said the state government has achieved much in the healthcare sector by upgrading primary health centres across the state. According to him, of the 255 primary healthcare centres being upgraded, 185 have been completed, while others are at various stages of completion. Abubakar said: “In terms of access of modern contraceptives to women, though we are far from our target, one of the major factors is the fact that there was too much prolonged time of stock-outs for the commodities. “I remember his Excellency, Governor Nasir el-Rufai, spoke with the Minister of Health to give us permission in the state to procure because the family planning commodities are actually sent centrally from Lagos. “Now we have gotten permission from the Federal Ministry of Health to procure the family planning commodities ourselves. “We have got to the point of processing the gap and we got approval from the governor to do virement of over N300 million worth of contraceptives and other family planning commodities. “We also have approval to recruit 3,059 health care workers and the recruitment will soon start.” According to him, “For upgrade of facilities, the state government has made tremendous achievements. “You may be aware that the government of Kaduna State has made it mandatory to upgrade, by rebuilding, by refurbishing 255 primary health centres so that we can have functional primary healthcare centre per ward. 183 of the 255 have been completed, about 50 are up to 60 and 94 per cent completion.” He added that a supplementary budget of N1 billion has been made to complete the remaining upgrade. Speaking earlier on behalf of the NGOs, Mr. Bartholomew Sati said the visit to the ministry was to congratulate the state government for its recent achievements in the health sector. Sati noted that the data from the 2018 Demographic Health Survey showed that Kaduna State is contributing to health in Nigeria with 23.3 per cent of women delivered by skilled birth attendants, 13.7 per cent of women using modern family planning and 2.1 per cent of under-five children given ORS & ZINC. He said the visit was timely and was a response to government’s commitment to improving its performance in the health sector. He however appealed to the state government to address some challenges facing the health sector. He said: “In 2018, Kaduna State allocated N17.522 billion or 8.1 per cent of the total budget to the health sector but released only N7.999 billion or 45.65 per cent of the allocated sum. “It is our prayer for full and timely releases of allocations to the health sector. “The unmet need for family planning in Kaduna State has increased by 6.5 per cent over the last five years. This means that services are not able to keep pace for the demands of women seeking family planning methods. “With the teeming population of Kaduna State expanded coverage under the Kaduna State Contributory Health Insurance Scheme will remain a challenge without adequate and sustainable inflows of funds. “Optimal coverage for Routine Immunization in Kaduna State will also remain a challenge without full implementation of the Primary Health Care Under One Roof Policy.” Source: www.myjobnaija.com
