Crime / Did Bovi’s #endsars Outfit Violate The National Flag Act? by Costlyarchie: 9:29am On Feb 27, 2021
But can Bovi be said to have acted against the law?

Legal experts say the comedian is not guilty.

Inibehe Effiong, a constitutional lawyer, said the law “does not prohibit or penalise the use of the flag for an artistic, intellectual or expressive purpose.”

“Bovi did not even carry the Nigerian flag. What he wore was a cloth. People don’t wear flags,” Effiong said.
“The representation on the cloth that he wore, has nothing to do with that law. The law they are talking about cannot undermine constitutional rights as a symbol of expression.

“If I decide to use the national flag as a symbol of protest, I cannot be prosecuted for that. That is a law that has no place under the current constitutional regime. That law is unconstitutional and invalid because section 39 of the constitution guarantees freedom of expression.

“What that law purports to prohibit is abusing Nigerian flag or using it for certain purposes. The law does not say you cannot draw the Nigerian flag on your cloth or in your book or you cannot make a representation of the Nigerian flag in your house.

He said the Act refers to a “physical flag that can be felt and touched”.
“If you look at the colours on Bovi’s cloth, it was not just green white green. There was red on the cloth. If he argues that what he wore isn’t the Nigerian flag, can a contrary argument be made? I can say that it is a cloth of multiple colours.

“If we are to look at it from the technical definition of a Nigerian flag, what makes that a representation of the flag? It was a cloth and if that cloth has a design with colours associated with the Nigerian flag, I don’t think that offends any law.

Another lawyer, Afam Osigwe, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), said Bovi’s flag-themed attire does not offend the law.

According to him, “the Act does not criminalise using the flag or coat of arm as part of your dressing.
“If the flag is used as an artistic representation to pass a message, it is different from flying a flag,” Osigwe said.

“The word used in the Act is ‘flying a flag.”

“So the question is if there is an artistic impression of a flag with some other connotation inside it worn by an individual, does that amount to flying the national flag? I believe it does not.”

“Flying the flag suggest putting it on a pole and hoisting it in a place, vessel or a vehicle. But if you have a flag design on a cloth with some other design as a show of protest, it doesn’t amount to flying the flag as it is within the purview of Flags and Coat of Arms Act.”

For clarity, TheCable went further to speak with another legal professional, Adeola Adedipe, a seasoned lawyer.

“That Act prohibits one to fly or exhibit a defaced national flag so any violation of that is a criminal offence,” Adedipe said.

“But for a literal construction, the gentleman was not flying a national flag. So, that is eliminated.”

“Another question is, was he exhibiting it? That is the word that calls for construction. Is wearing a T-shirt that has the print of a national flag a form of an exhibition? I don’t think so.

“In the word exhibit, although not interpreted in the Act, it could mean an occasion, cultural display, a primary event i.e armed forces remembrance day or independence day, something of national importance that promotes the national heritage and culture. These things might require permission (licence) one way or the other.

“But where a person wears a T-shirt that has the national flag, it doesn’t fall within the parameters of an exhibition. “He/she does not need a license to wear it.

“So if he doesn’t need a license to wear the T-shirt, you cannot hold him for an allegation that the flag printed on it was defaced because the purpose was not for exhibition. It is just like any random cloth because it is not moving from him to a third party.”

Adedipe added that if the Act is interpreted strictly, most Nigerians will be affected negatively.

“When you want to construe a penal provision as we have here, it must be liberal to the person against who it would be used. If you construe in strict terms, at the end of the day, you find that everybody is affected by it knowingly or unknowingly,” he said.

With the opinion canvassed by legal experts, it is safe to say Bovi may not be culpable of violating the Flags and Coat of Arms Act

JUSTICE FOR GABRIEL BASSEY EDWARD

Its 63days after the cold blooded murder of Gabriel Bassey Edward at his residence in Ifa Ikot Okpon, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The deceased was a 23year old native of Akai Ubium , Nsit Ubium, LGA of Akwa Ibom State and a final year student of the Department Of Civil engineering, University Of Uyo.

The Old student of Federal Government College Ikot Ekpene was also a freelancer writer, a hobby he engaged in for added income to sponsor himself through school. He was the eldest of three children(two males and a female) of Late Mrs Edward and Mr Bassey Edward.

Following his parents' separation and mother's death in 2019, the deceased and his siblings moved in with a relative but had their stay cut short by inhumane treatment.

Consequently, Gabriel and his only brother moved into their mother's uncompleted house located at Ifa Ikot Okpon, where the deceased was eventually murdered.

Being more of an introvert, Gabriel agreed with his only brother never to receive any visitor so as to keep their peaceful lives off the radar of public interference. This was a rule they both kept and heeded to until a neighbor (names withheld) introduced a senior pastor of Winners Chapel who on behalf of a young man in his early 20s sought for church tenancy at Gabriel's new residence not long after both siblings moved in.

In a bit to help the young man who happened to be a junior pastor sent to start a new branch in the area, Late Gabriel decided to partition the building to enable the said pastor identified as Prince Umoh of Essien Udim LGA of Akwa Ibom State conduct church services pending when the church will acquire a permanent property. A tenancy fee of 150,000 per annum was agreed to by Gabriel and the Senior Pastor(Names withheld), and owing to non-completion of the building, Gabriel asked the Senior Pastor to use the year's tenancy fee to fix the church hall. Still in want of payment, the senior pastor gave the rent to Gabriel in August, a decision that didn't go down well with the junior pastor (Prince Umoh) who had ulterior motive to usurp the money for selfish gain.

In October 2020, the junior pastor moved into the rented hall and commenced church activities. As weeks run by, he sought the deceased's permission to keep some of the church's items at their part of the building. Following the consent of Gabriel, the junior pastor moved some of the church's items into Gabriel's apartment which the deceased shared with his brother and was given a spare key to the apartment.

The unbelievable began to happen. The deceased's late mother's personal effects which both brothers held dear allegedly went missing and both siblings raised concerns. Gabriel decided not to confront Pastor Prince but confided in the Snr Pastor about the dismal development.

At a point, the door locks were discretely changed and the said theft stopped. The latest development didn't go well with Pastor Prince and rather than show his grievance on it, he sought for the possession of the tenancy fee for renovation, a request the senior pastor didn't see as necessary.

In November 2020, Gabriel was bent on retrieving his mother's personal belongings from the junior pastor but was asked by his younger brother to avoid personal confrontation as he suspected Prince was up to no good. So, Gabriel took to communicating with the Snr Pastor on the need to retrieve his mother's personal effects which he really held dear.

By the virtue of his quiet and calm disposition, and being a dedicated member of Christ the King Cathedral,Uyo(a Roman Catholic denomination), he often stayed at the church house to write and carry out church activities but was last seen at the church premises on Tuesday 15th Dec, 2020.

On the morning of Saturday 19th, Gabriel's brother, Emmanuel decided to go over to their maternal aunt's place following exhaustion of food items and had called Gabriel to inform and also asked that his clothes be removed from the line as he planned to stay for a week. He left the compound locked with padlock which often gave difficulty to open.

On Monday Emmanuel tried to reach out to Gabriel but the deceased's line didn't go through and out of worry , Emmanuel put up a post on Facebook inquiring his brother's wayabout having had funny feelings about something sinister. When all possible avenues for communication proved futile, he decided to check the church to confirm if Gabriel had travelled as he assumed. On arrival at the church, the deceased's brother was told Gabriel was last seen at the church premises penultimate Tuesday.

To satisfy his curiosity, Emmanuel went home and met their house gate locked from inside and so, he gained access to the building by jumping over the fence.

On entrance, Emmanuel was moved aback by the doors which lay open. He quickly made his way to the toilet to confirm if his brother took his travel items( sponge and toothbrush). However, the items were intact and on entering the bedroom, Emmanuel was met by a choking stench and when he looked further,he saw a stiff hand which stuck out of a mat. On close examination,he discovered the body of the deceased wrapped in their mat and squeezed in-between their bedspace.

The deceased's brother raised alarm and neighbors came trooping into the resident with waves of grieve, testimonies of the deceased and account of incidents on the absence of Emmanuel.

The accused Pastor Prince was seen by a neighbor (who was washing his car opposite the deceased's compound) entering the deceased's residence on the morning of Monday 21st December,2020.

He was reported to possess a bag containing items while entering the compound. Minutes later three loud screams by the deceased was heard by neighbors who came to the building's low fence to peep out of concern, only to see the accused struggling to lock the gate with blood stains. When asked what the screams were for, Pastor Prince Umoh claimed he fell off a height while trying to do cleanup at the building, and because he was a regular face at the premises, he was believed. He was also seen with a jerrycan of water before his return into the building. He later left the premises with the church pulpit and other items which was later discovered to be an act to pull a wool over his crime and confuse residents of his misdeed. The accused was discovered to have cleaned up the crime scene to evade suspicion, but unaware some blood had stubbornly stuck in-between the rough floor of the scene. Splashes of blood were also seen on the sides of the pot in the room.

On discovery of the deceased decomposing corpse on Wednesday, his laptop and phone was reportly stolen, while his late mum's stolen items were returned. The murder weapon which was a knife was among the stolen items prior to change of house locks and on arrest of the accused on Wednesday 23rd December,2020, insufficient evidence was taken and he was released same day only to be rearrested four days later. Within this space of time, an inspection of the accused's resident became nearly fruitless as deceased's plates and personal jotter were seen but without a trace of his phone and laptop. It was also discovered that the accused sent text message to his senior pastor from the deceased's phone feigning return of lost items by someone else on the evening of the day the crime was carried out.

According to reports, the accused had no cordial relationship with his neighbors who feared his unfriendly disposition.

The case had been transferred from Shelter Afrique police station to Zonal Police Headquarters, Ikot Akpan Abia, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State for further investigation.

Crime / Winners Chapel Pastor Murders Final Year Uniuyo Student by Costlyarchie: 11:15pm On Feb 02, 2021
JUSTICE FOR GABRIEL: MURDER IN THE CATHEDRAL!

These are chairs with blood stains belonging to Living Faith Church alias Winners Chapel, Atakpa Ifa Ikot Ubo Etoi in Ifa Ikot Okpon, Uyo where Mr. Gabriel Bassey Edward, a final year student of Civil Engineering, University of Uyo was murdered.

The prime suspect, one "pastor" Prince Emmanuel Umoh was the last person seen with the deceased.

The suspect (in the attached photo) removed the Church pulpit and other things out of the Church the same day that Gabriel was murdered. He claims that he wanted to paint the pulpit. But there is nothing wrong with the pulpit. In any event, which pastor will move out a pulpit (a sacred object) out of the Church premises to his personal house?

He never painted the said pulpit.

Even if he wanted to paint it, the Church premises and the compound are spacious enough. It doesn't make iota of sense, particularly given the long distance from the Church to his house. Even the senior pastor who supervises this so-called pastor Prince Emmanuel expressed shock at the movement of the pulpit from the Church. The suspect said initially that he told the senior pastor before moving out of pulpit, but the senior pastor denied this false claim to his face.

The same pastor Prince Emmanuel changed the sitting arrangements in the Church and moved the chairs away from the usual area which is close to the part of the building where Gabriel Iived (the corpse of the deceased was dumped in his room after he was murdered) on the same day.

Was this done to reduce the odour from the corpse?

When the police went for a search in the house of the suspect, they found a jotter belonging to the deceased in his house (with the name of the deceased boldly inscribed on it). The jotter is one of the missing items stolen from the house of the deceased.

Neighbours heard repeated screams of "Jesus" the day Gabriel was killed.

They ran out only to see the suspect who claimed that he was the person who shouted after he fell down. He claimed that he wanted to host a banner on the wall. However, upon a visit to the scene, he could not show where he wanted to host the banner.

Neighbours saw him with a bucket on the said date. There was blood stains on the bucket and on his cloths. When they asked him, he claimed that he sustained injury after he fell down but he could not show the said injury.

At the Shelter Afrque police station, all that he showed was an old minor scratch on his hand which cannot explain the degreen of blood stains and traces of blood found on the floor, bucket, chairs and his cloths.

There are still traces of blood on the floor of the Church (please note that the Church is a hall owned by Gabriel's mother who passed on in 2019). The hall was partitioned, and the larger part rented to Winners Chapel while Gabriel lived in a small part.

Gabriel repeatedly complained about missing items in his house. Only the pastor and Gabriel had keys to the premises and the house of the deceased where he used to keep some items belonging to the Church.

Items stopped missing the moment Gabriel changed/replaced the keys.

The Church had paid N150,000 for renovations which was handed over to Gabriel to supervise the work. The pastor openly said he was aggrieved by the refusal of the Church to allow him to keep, disburse and manage the money as the resident pastor.

Above are just some of the facts of the case.

Right now, there are nefarious efforts to shield the suspect. The mother of the said suspect is an Inspector in the Nigeria Police Force.

Living Faith Church is standing by their "pastor".

We demand justice for Gabriel.

Anytime you saw Gabriel, you saw a young man with so much focus, drive to succeed, and a burning quest to stand out despite all. A good high school in Cardinal Ekandem Seminary had provided a sound foundation for him to pursue a degree in Civil Engineering in Uniuyo. It was no wonder then that the young Gabriel knew a thing or two about everything. You won’t catch him off guard in any subject. But of all, he knew many, if not all religions at the tip of his fingers and fecund mind no matter the time of day.

In Church, he was a man of all. If you have an issue with Gabriel, it can only be because of a certain point of contention on an issue of interest. Whether it was politics, science, arts, name them, the boy was at the top of his game. Gabriel lived a life of quietude to an extent. Though a fine mixer, he was not given to flamboyance and pop lifestyle. He didn’t only dress gentlemanly, he was a gentleman who attached nothing to life but simplicity. He did not glory in the mundane.

That’s why it’s shocking that such a calm fellow could die such a painful death. The boy was butchered in his room. He was left to bleed to death on a mat. After not being seen for days, his calls not picked, a Facebook post declared him missing. But curiosity grew when the stench of his decaying body engulfed the area he lived. Gabriel’s decomposing body was only discovered last Saturday after he must have passed on for days. He was buried without delay amidst a river of tears.

It was a devastating scene to behold. Many couldn’t believe that Gabriel Bassey was gone. A thick pall of gloom hung in the air. Who could have done this to Gabriel? Many queried. If he had died naturally, it would have still been a sad tale to tell. But to see his body cut to pieces by a beastly fellow is heart-rending, to say the least.

Kenneth Jude

For many who knew him, including his family, the only thing that can console all is to get to the root of this matter, get the person behind this sad incident and make sure he pays the price of this man’s inhumanity to a fellow man in full. Gabriel must get justice. He didn’t deserve to die in such an animalistic manner.

Those handling the case should ensure a thorough investigation. This case should not be compromised for any reason. There should be no double-dealing. Let justice for which the late Gabriel often advocated for in society prevail. This is the only thing that can console his family and many others. To see this case treated with kid gloves may inflame passions more.

His brother has pointed a finger hence the chief suspect is already answering questions. An investigation into the matter should be done without recourse to sentiments. It’s not a church fight, but the Pastor involved. So, let’s not demonize the church but face the man. He’s only but a suspect until the law says otherwise. So, let’s throw no barbs at his church to avoid distractions.

In every society, the church has a bad egg hence if as alleged, the man committed, aided, and abetted the crime, it cannot be concluded that that’s how the church is. A bad child does not mean all other children of the same parents are the same. So, let’s focus on the man who is understandably the prime suspect given what transpired in the past and testimonies by neighbors. But this is no excuse for members of the church to act as though unrefined.

In all, we ask for nothing other than justice for Gabriel. Let the state government, security agencies, and other relevant bodies take this matter seriously. No carpet worth its weight and size can stand the heat this nightmarish death has generated; so the thought of sweeping anything under it doesn’t arise. All eyes are on the investigating authorities. No compromises, please.

In all, #JusticeForGabrielEdward is our rallying cry!

The Member representing Nsit Ubium State Constituency in Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly Hon. (Barr) Otobong Bob has called for a thorough and swift investigation into the gruesome murder of his constituent Gabriel Bassey Edward.

Gabriel, an indigene of Akai Ubium, was a twenty three (23) years old final year student of the department of civil engineering in the University of Uyo, a parishoner and the Secretary of Catholic Youth Organization (CYON) in Christ the King Cathedral (CKC), Uyo was allegedly murdered on the 21st day of December 2020 by a certain pastor with one of the pentecostal churches in Nigeria in their parish located at Ifa Ikot Ubo, Ifa Ikot Okpon, Etoi in Uyo.

In his motion, Hon. Bob further noted with serious concern that there are efforts and attempts to compromise ongoing investigations and circumvent justice for his murdered constituent Gabriel and the deceased family, being cognizant of available evidences and eyewitnesses to aid investigations towards unraveling the perpetrator of the dastardly act.

He called on the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police to carry out a thorough and swift investigation into the Murder of Gabriel Bassey Edward. He also prayed the house to mandate and call on the Attorney General of Akwa Ibom State to ensure that this horrific murder case is properly handled and the culprit diligently prosecuted.

19 crazy facts about Bill Gates' $123 million mansio
Xanadu 2.0 Bill Gates house
With a net worth of $78.9 billion, Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates is the richest man in America.
It shouldn't be too surprising that one of the wealthiest people in the world also has an insanely extravagant home.

It took Gates seven years and $63 million to build his Medina, Washington, estate, named "Xanadu 2.0" after the fictional home of Charles Foster Kane, the title character of "Citizen Kane."

At 66,000 square feet, the home is absolutely massive, and it's loaded to the brim with high-tech details.

We've rounded up some of Xanadu 2.0's most over-the-top features here.

It's worth at least $123 million today.
According to the King County public assessor's office, the property is worth $123.54 million as of this year. Gates purchased the lot for $2 million in 1988.

He reportedly pays around $1 million in property taxes each year.

Half a million board-feet of lumber was needed to complete the project.
The house was built with 500-year-old Douglas fir trees, and 300 construction workers labored on the home — 100 of whom were electricians.

A high-tech sensor system helps guests monitor a room's climate and lighting.
When guests arrive, they're given a pin that interacts with sensors located all over the house. Guests enter their temperature and lighting preferences so that the settings change as they move throughout the home. Speakers hidden behind wallpaper allow music to follow you from room to room.

The house uses its natural surroundings to reduce heat loss.
Xanadu 2.0 is an "earth-sheltered" house, meaning that it's built into its surroundings to regulate temperature more efficiently.

You can change the artwork on the walls with just the touch of a button.
Situated around the house are $80,000 worth of computer screens. Anyone can make the screens display their favorite paintings or photographs, which are stored on devices worth $150,000.

The pool also has its own underwater music system.
The 60-foot pool is in its own separate, 3,900-square-foot building — the large brown building in the photo above. People in the pool could swim underneath a glass wall to come up to a terrace area on the outside.

There's also a locker room with four showers and two baths.

There's a trampoline room with a 20-foot ceiling.
No word on how big the trampoline is, but we can imagine it would be a fun alternative to your standard exercise routine.

The exercise facilities total 2,500 square feet and also include a sauna, steam room, and separate men's and women's locker rooms.

An enormous reception hall can accommodate up to 200 guests.
The 2,300-square-foot hall could seat up to 150 people for a dinner party, or 200 people standing up at a cocktail event. A 6-foot-wide limestone fireplace dominates one wall, while another wall has a 22-foot-wide video screen.

The house has 24 bathrooms, 10 of which are full baths.
Those bathrooms would definitely be useful if Gates were throwing such a big party. Otherwise, it seems a little over the top.

There are six kitchens.
They're at different parts of the house so staff can be ready for any event.

An enormous library houses a manuscript Gates paid more than $30 million for.
The 2,100-square-foot library has a dome roof and two secret bookcases, including one that reveals a hidden bar. On the ceiling you'll find a quote from "The Great Gatsby" that reads: "He had come a long way to this blue lawn, and his dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly fail to grasp it."

The library is also home to the Codex Leicester, a 16th-century Leonardo da Vinci manuscript that Gates bought at auction for $30.8 million in 1994.

The home theater can accommodate 20 guests in plush seats.
It's designed in an Art Deco style, with comfortable arm chairs, couches, and even a popcorn machine for snacking.

An existing home was removed by barge to make room for a separate activities building.
An existing home was removed by barge to make room for a separate activities building.
A sea barge with three homes is tugged out into the Strait of Georgia
The 900-square-foot building sits next to Gates' sport court, putting green, and boat docks.

The guest house is just as high-tech as the main house.
According to US News, the 1,900-square-foot guest house was the first building to be completed on the property. The house — which has its own bedroom and bathroom — was meant to be a test of the technology that would eventually be used in the main house.

Gates wrote much of "The Road Ahead" here.

Altogether, Gates' garages can accommodate up to 23 cars.
There are several different garages at different points around the property. The most interesting one, however, is an underground cave made out of concrete and stainless steel. That garage alone can park 10 cars. Some of the concrete was purposely broken to give it a rough, "deconstructivist" look.

Gates has a favorite tree, and it's monitored electronically 24 hours a day.
