EducationRe: My Medical School Experience- The Fighting Spirit by Couver(m):
I don't know how the argument got to this but maybe I should just say how things are done in College of Medicine, University of Ibadan.
In 100l medical and dental student do science courses, when the pass their exam at the end of the academic year they move to preclinical school and if they don't pass they either withdraw or cross to another department.
In Preclinical school which runs for about 18months, they both do Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry and medical statistics. But in addition to these, dental students do dental anatomy. At the end of the 18months, they write their first professional examination MBBS Part1 for the medical students and BDS part 1 for the dental students. The BDS Part1 includes dental anatomy. When they pass the exam they move to clinical school, if they fail a course they resit the course, if they fail 2 or more courses they join the next class, if they fail the resit they join the next class.
In clinical school, they both do Pathology, Pharmacology, Medicine1, Medicine2, Surgery1, Surgery2(all surgery units), Pediatrics1(all pediatric units but on the wards no clinic work), Radiology and Radiotherapy, Special posting 1(ENT, Opthamology, Anaesthesia, Dentistry). Then they both write their respective professional exams MBBS part 2 for Medical students and BDS part 2 for Dental students. Note that this second professional exam contains only Pathology and Pharmacology. This exam is usually taken at the end of 400l. So moving into 500l, Medical and dental students more or less part ways.
At the beginning of 500l, dental students start preparing for BDS part 3 which includes Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, radiology and radiotherapy, Special Posting. They go for revision postings in Medicine and surgery then sit for the BDS part 3 exams. After this, dental students go on to Dental school and write 3 more professional exams, ending with BDS part 6. On the other hand their MBBS counterparts go on to O&G, Psychiatry, Medicine 3, Surgery 3, Pediatrics 2 (clinic work), community medicine, Special postings 2 and write 2 more professional exams MBBS part 3 (Pediatrics/ O&G) then Part 4 (medicine and surgery).
Usually in University of Ibadan, Dental curriculum ends 2 weeks after the MBBS curriculum ends. They are inducted the same day and are both regarded as doctors. If a dentist wants to go back and get the MBBS, he'd have to take an 18 months course at the end of which he'd lose his BDS degree. If a Medical doctor wants to get the BDS degree, he'd have to take a 3 years course at the end of which he'd lose his MBBS degree. In other words, in Nigeria, it's not possible to have both degrees. Also worthy of note is the fact that in UI, especially from 500l it is more expensive to study dentistry.
On a final note, MBBS and BDS isn't the same thing. Their holders can both head a medical institution as CMD in Nigeria. They both belong to the MDCN.
BDS isn't so popular because of the limited number of schools that run the course and the limited quota given to these school.
Another misconception is that dentists deal with teeth only, dentists deal with the oral health, a greater part of their work just involve the teeth.
Dentistry is more lucrative in developed countries, though practicing in Nigeria will guarantee you comfortable life.

We don't have to try to pull down a course to make another one seem more important. All health care professionals are unique in their own way and contribute to the physical, mental and social well-being of their patients.

I hope this helps someone somewhere someday.

angiography:
I am just laughing here at how much he's trying to prove a point he shouldn't have pointed out ab initio.

In my school here, dentistry students rotates medicine and surgery in part 4 with medicine students ...together with path and pharm.

Afterwards, they have nothing in common anymore, medicine students go on to O&G, paediatrics, psychiatry, dermatology, orthopaedics, radiology, in part 5, then medicine, surgery and community health in part 6.

Meanwhile dental students don't rotate with them in these.. Yet he said "dental students don't just do few medicine courses"

My bad!

Thank you for this important clarification Vimma. I really do not know what exactly is obtainable about the crossing stuff. I've always relied on information from students.

What do you have to say Couver?

cc: Bobola07
To the best of my knowledge, only students in Human Nutrition, Physiology and Biochemistry can cross to MB;BS or BDS. This is because these are not professional courses. Maybe it used to be possible to cross from Faculty of Science to MB;BS or BDS before but it is almost impossible now.

Is it possible to cross from faculty of science to College of Medicine??
My answer is YES . You can cross from Chemistry to Biochemistry for example though you might have to do some 100lvl courses that you didn't do now that you have crossed. And the stress isn't child's play.

Good morning friend,
I would like to advise everyone coming into college of medicine, U.I ,with the aim of crossing to to the professional courses that you should have a plan B &C .I said that because this year out of the 55+ people that applied to cross to MBBD/BDS , only 5 eventually crossed (3 MBBS & 2BDS) . I think this must have been as a result of the large number of the class before.......The cutoff for MBBS crossing was 6.2 and around 5.5 for BDS , much higher that what it was the previous year....
Note that all those 50+ people joined our classes from the beginning of this session and they had all it took to cross( 4.5 and above + they were great colleagues).........They neglected their own department work because of the assurance they had in their CGPA. The list for crossing came out about 9weeks into the semester , when they had missed lot of tests, classes, practicals etc. The psychological trauma is even on another level.............

So if you are coming into UI COM with the aim of crossing, know that you have to really really work to earn that slot, the probability of crossing before you cross is less than 10%.................. Love the course you get into first ,the have back plans.

DokitaDave:
Thank you for calling my attention to this ma.

Firstly, let me also salute your courage for holding your head up high in the face of public ignorance even when you seem not to totally understand what is obtainable in Dentistry and Dental Surgery.

So many people (including prospective undergraduates) do not understand the nitty-gritty of Dentistry, hence they do not appreciate it or pick it as a choice course, as the case may be. (By the way, this is somewhat to the advantage of the usually few dental applicants because this sort of brings the cut-off mark down each year)

In simple terms, I'll say Dentistry and Dental Surgery is basically a specialty in medicine that allows you to specialize right from your undergraduate days. Some arguments I read about Dentistry and Dental Surgery on social media are not accurate and thus misleading.

Right from your first year till after about your first year in UCH, BDS and MBBS students take thesame courses all through. Infact, dental students offer more courses. Dental students write more MB (professional medical exams) than MBBS guys. We both spend thesame number of years in school and we do things together many times.

I don't want to sound like someone trying to glorify a course above another because we are both workers in the medical field. BDS and MBBS graduates are regarded as Doctors. They both belong to thesame professional body (NMA) and the prospect is thesame in Nigeria (that's if Dental graduates don't even have upper hand due to the fewer graduates been churned out in the country each year). What about pay? In Nigeria, BDS and MBBS graduates earn thesame using thesame salary scale. In some other western worlds (like the US), dentists earn more than their counterparts.

What else?

My friend, you have made the right choice and you shouldn't be discouraged by the wrong arguments you find in many public spheres.

Let me know if there are some other things you are still not clear about please.
