Gabriel


I pulled the car over and entered the lonely house, I'd been a bit shaken up but I had no idea what it was. I was feeling guilt but the silence in the house tormented me even more.


I remembered my last conversation with Johnson and what I had said to him,

'' Then count yourself among the dead, 'cos you'll be a dead man...''

I realised what loosing Kate had done to me, it unveiled the true side of me. Why did I let her go in the first instance? It was her choice ,so I cant blame her for choosing such.

I thought about my son David, what kind of Father had I become to him? What lessons did he learn from my actions?

I sat deep into the cushion and looked round the silent house. I Poured myself a glass of wine and paced up and down the parlour.


''Hello, Yvonne? '' i said into the phone after dialing my sister's number.

'yes...How is mama holding up? Maxwell? Is he fine? '' I sat down and ran my fingers round the cup's tip.

'' I know she is still mad at me...Kate will come back ,trust me'' I got up and looked outside.

A car had stopped, and I knew exactly who it was. What was she doing here?


'' No ,David is fine with his grandparents, he cant stay here with me alone..'' I continued '' I'll find time to visit -- Ok for your sake , I'll try to get them back.''


I moved outside .'' Let me call you back, yea. I have something to attend to'' . I hung up the line.


She walked straight to my doorstep and smiled.

'' what are you doing here?' I barked. '' you are not supposed to be here''



She smiled again.


She came closer, and her sunshades went off revealing her pretty eyes. Why? She so loved tempting me at every slightest opportunity, what had I done to deserve this purnishment?


'' Gabe, we are family now'' She touched my chin '' this house is too lonely for you, why not come over to- ''


I frowned and she noticed it, then said

'' I know how it feels . To be left alone, '' Her voice became romantic '' to sleep all night in the cold sheets all by yourself, lets make it easier for us. You know what I mean. Go home to us, we are waiting for you''



I laughed.

I had no idea, but sentences like that started to get on my tickle bone. She hadnt seen anything yet, only time will tell.

I dragged her arms and opened her car door, '' Get in and get outta here'' .

She struggled and tried to break free. '' Gabe, what are you doing? Let go off my--please stop. You know how much I love you '' her voice became pathetic.


I slammed the door, put my head through the window and looked at Dami in the eye

'' ofcourse I do. And I will be heartless if I dont appreciate your love. If I want you, I'll come to your house, not the other way round. '' I turned to get back into my verranda.



'' Gabe, your problems wont stop, not until you accept me, even after I gave you wealth , you still treat me like rag.. What kind of a man are you? '' She nearly cried.


I stood there at the entrance, silent as she reeled the book of judges into my ear.


'' wont be long ,until your other needs start haunting you'' she laughed '' then we'll see who is more tough'' .


With those words, she zoomed off , raised debris and dust leaving the atmosphere in a displaced state in the ecosystem.

I don't like Andy one bit! Many of you criticised Gabriel that he lied to Kate and almost had sex with Dami. Andy is not different from Gabriel. He almost did the same thing amid even worse than Gabriel. If Andy really loved Kate he would have been thinking of how he will take care of Kate in her present condition rather than thinking of the worst scenario that could happen to her or his desires. Gabriel is the one that really loves Kate and I hope Kate will get to understand why Gabriel did what he did and forgive him. Thanks for the mention Creeza.

I moved a little backwards as my life flashed right before my eyes, there was no one in sight to save me from the impending terror. He came towards me and siezed my hand bag

" Please spare me" I began " You can take my phone , take everything in the purse but don't harm me , please"


He advanced and my back brushed a fence,there was no other place to run to, I was doomed. I regretted ever leaving campus that night and wished it was just a dream.
He ordered me into a more darker alley and I knew exactly what would follow.

" I'm not done , yet, I want to have a taste of that sweet--ohh!! Don't cry "he said as he probably saw my reactions .
" No , don't , Please. I'm a virgin, please don't "

He laughed hysterically " Virgin?, this thing " he pointed his knife to the my abdomen " this thing that Dani has squashed the daylight into its dark corners?


I was not too surprised , Dani had quite a lot of friends and he often bragged to feel cool. I only feared for my life and my pride at that moment. This guy was drunk and dangerous.


I thought of an escape route, I tried to move but his knife was faster than my limbs.



" Arhhh! !!


I screamed as the pain grew very intense from the spot where he had cut deep into my laps . I trembled with fear and blood soaked my gown, trickled down my legs and they became very numb, I couldn't move.



" I'm not done yet, where the hell, do you think you are going? His voice barked out as I shivered with fear.



*I should have stayed at home , Oh God help me " * I thought so loud that I nearly screamed.


" I only refused to dance with you " I began, " that was just my crime and you took laws into your hand, why are you punishing me like this?

" That ? No... Remember fresher's year?


What was he driving at? I wanted to know ,so I shook my head in disapproval.


"The guy you slapped in the public. Remember now? " He continued "Why? Because he was so nice to ask your sorry ass on a date, instead of being a sweet lady that you are right now, you slapped him and told him to go and ask his mother on a date"


"Aisose?I should have known."


I couldn't believe it, he had been so timid in fresher's year. Why chose now to get his pound of flesh, maybe he was now a cultist, his sudden energy proved it all.


" Yes-- you have a good memory"



He laughed again and this time he launched himself on me, as I scrambled off the floor. His strong arms gripped and pinned me to the corner on the ground, He unfastened his belt and raised my gown exposing my tights.


" Don't even scream " He said with a hoarse voice .



I made attempts to shout and he punched me on the forehead. My eyes began to spin round as everything became blurrred and double imaged.


I fought with my last energy and pushed him off, then he landed another blow on my cheek.


" Idiot, I said stay put"


I saw someone , and I thought it was an angel, or my prince in shinning Armor . He came from behind and knocked Aisose with a pistol gun( That was the first time I ever saw one).I sighed a relief and fell on my back.
He grabbed him by his collar and slapped him so hard that a tooth flew off his jaw.


" Get up , your end is today. You will meet your forefathers today " The man said " You want---"



I barely heard what he was saying when I fainted, the sharp pain on my laps and face was too much for me to bear.

The house was very dusty and I began to clean every part , I made sure it was habitable for me.
I scrubbed the table and brushed the cushion. I dusted the curtains and wiped the doorframes .



I was still busy when the front door flung open and behold two hefty looking gentlemen stood in the door way. They shrieked with fear as if they saw a ghost, wanted to run away but came back and realised I was only a woman.



. Oh my God * I thought to myself.



" Jesus " The fair looking guy exclaimed " What are you doing here ?



" Wait, maybe she is lost " The second guy concluded .He was darker than I expected.



Their faces were full of confusion and questions. they wanted to hear it all.



The first guy came closer and looked me in the eye .



" Lady, do you realise that this is a male housing quarters?


" I was brought here by Mr .Ake"

The dark guy nodded . " So ? Why did he bring you here? There are female quarters in the other part of the estate"

I dropped the throw towel I held , and relaxed to relief myself of the shock which was eating me up. I was supposed to be prepared but somehow I began to fear.



" He said that the female quarters are filled up" I began " The room to the left , I have the keys, that's my room. And this parlour is shared right?



They both nodded and looked at each other.


" I believe we are Christians and we can live here peacefully as brothers and sister." I said again to gain their atentention.



They went outside and came back minutes later.



" Well " I asked " Are we OK ?



" We?? The first guy asked


" Yes , we ? I repeated .



He laughed then looked at the other guy, before turning to me.


He said it was fine and that they could use a helping hand around ,he made reference to the cleaning I had done and thanked me . Then the second gentleman introduced himself.


" I'm Uyi....Osaruyi " He said " And you are ?


" Efua Barry . And you must be Nosa " I piointed to the first guy .



" How did you know my name? And what a coincidence, we all from the same ethnic group, this is interesting" Nosa said with a smile that was somewhat fake.

No wonder Mr Ake, said people can say any rubbish but he was a realist, I just figured out what he meant. This guy was somethng else, I just couldn't tell what it was.

" Are you not the royal one? The prince " I joked about it.



"Yea , you can say that again "


We laughed.



They asked what I had studied in the university , I told them and they replied with theirs. Then Uyi made a funny comment.


" Is this how you normally dress? He pointed to my long gown and robe that looked like those of a nun.


" What?

" I mean , this is just for the house chores right?


" Are you serious? I laughed " Get outta here"

I squeezed the mop and used it to chase them out of the parlour as they laughed and ran into their rooms.


It had been a hell of a day and a little humor was good for me, I started to like them naturally. They were good guys and funny ones too.


I just couldn't wait to start work the next day and call my cousin ,Izzy.

I hoped he would come, after texting him the address. An old church cathedral near my locale. The wind summerslamed into a pack of debris behind the church and an explosion of leaves and debris occured in the air . I feared the worst and hoped that I was doing the right thing, Mimi had told me how badly she was disturbed by Andy, only so I could meet him.

I had to end the whole drama , I couldn't allow him suffer, he deserved better than me. My son needed me to be strong and i couldn't be that strong when someone else worried about me.


At the entrance of the church , a car pulled over and raise dust. Andrew alighted and was as energetic as ever, he wore his normal packet shirt and chinos plain trousers, he was quite fabulous to say the least.

He walked down the aisle and took off his sunshades " Why are we meeting here, I thought it would have been a restaurant or something?


" It had to be here " I sniffed and sat on a wodden bench at the church's left corner.




" Well , won't you say something? " I asked .






He suddenly laughed .





" What's so funny " I became annoyed and yet couldn't help it but laugh too " Are you OK? I asked






" You have grown very skinny " He sat down and rubbed his palms together . " why are you running, Kate ? You should face your problems , not run from them "

" What's that part about me being very skinny ? "




I hit him casually on his shoulders and his face brightened with a smile on every angle..





" Why did you call? He grabbed my arms " I've been aching to see and talk to you"





I withdrew my palms and began " You see that's why, that's why I wanted to see you in person- " I said before he cut me short of the words .



" Whatever it is you are facing right now, we can solve it together , tell me. Okay "



I faced my head down and tears broke out from every duct in my eyes . My life was in ruin and I couldn't help but think of Andy as just a friend , we weren't supposed to go beyond that barrier.. He rubbed my back softly and my spine became electrified .




" Do you still feel anything for him ? , He asked " Kate, all men are not the same, I know you have a son with him who is six, but you are still very young, don't hurt yourself by sticking around on a pretended love--"



I raised my head and said " I'm with his child, and I can't leave just like that-"



I was about to complete the sentence when a he got up instantly.

I became confused , then I regretted why I told him in the first instance.

He suddenly jerked and looked me in the eye. I asked him why he was eager to leave,without saying anything.

" I don't know what to say Kate, I honestly don't know what to say"




" Tell me it will be fine, tell me its going to be OK, you are my friend right? Don't leave me now that I need you more. Please Andy, say something"



He scoffed and released his arms from my grip, then, I saw the reason why he had jerked when I touched him: A huge scar on his left arm, just near the elbow joint..

I didn't ask questions about it, even though it was very tempting to do so.



" You see Kate, that's where the problem lies, I'm not comfortable being just friends with you , I have waited for a long time. If it can't happen so I'd better try out my other options. Just know that whatever you need , you can always call me and I will provide it, if I can"

He wasnt making sense to me, he wanted something and I just couldn't figure out what it was.





" Tell me what you want? What do you want from me Andy ? Please tell me,because I'm tired of all these suspense and tension. " I shook his shoulder furiously .




" I want you " He looked deep into my eyes, his dark brown eyeballs radiated cosmic energy, the type I'd never seen before.



I touched my abdomen and rubbed it carefully " But I'm carrying---"



He cut in " What if you loose it ? His eyes fixed into mine.


" You don't mean abortion , do you ? I was surprised at his statement .



"I mean with the stress you have put yourself into, what if you loose it through miscarriage, God forbid, but eventually it happens? Will you still think its right to stay with him , when you don't love him anymore"



I went backwards and trembled at his statement , why would he want me to lose my pregnancy? He was up to somthing and I couldn't place a finger on it. Just then, a bird flew into bell tower of the church and hit the rope, making the bell report with loud succession of rings.

" So when will the final blow of the plan, happen? Dr Johnson asked me .



He was willing to do anything just to have a revenge at Dami. I thought he was foolish or maybe he enjoyed scheming plots that were not going to work.


I laughed .


I fondled with the pen on his table, at the centre of his office and we sat opposite each other with my legs crossed.



" Do you think I enjoy pretending to her ? I asked him


" Well, that's the more reason we have to act fast " He concluded


I laughed again .



"Honestly, why do you think I'm so foolish to give in to your plan .Now that I need her most ?"




" My plan is simple, like we agreed, you just pretend that its OK with you and her, enjoy her wealth and encourage her to keep coming here for shots of inducers to alleviate her hallucinations, the drugs which are in the inducers will gradually weaken her cells, and before a year she'd be dead. But now I want to fast track things---"


" Are you out of your mind ? I cut in.


His grudge against her , I had no idea but if there was any toll for serial killing ,Mr Johnson would have taken the lead on the chart.


" You can't back out now! You have come this far with the plan and I think we should skip the whole thing and just do away with her."

I nodded and gulped down the wine in the glass cup which was on the table. I wanted to have riches and power ,but I was not a murderer.

I frowned and got up to leave his office when he said something that was inaudible . I twisted the door's handle and was barely outside in the hall when he said

I stopped and turned, faced him , nanaobots of anger went down my spine and I had to unleash them.


" I don't care about her, I don't care if she is the devil's advocate, I don't give a damn about your plan. So you can as well shove it down your ass. I only care about her daughter and you don't expect me to make her an orphan at such a tender age. And let me warn you. Yes let me sound it as a warning . if you so much as speak to anyone about this conversation "

I paused to allow my conviction sink deep into his mind.





" Then count yourself among the dead , 'cos you will be a dead man. Have a nice day"



I banged the door loudly that everyone in the reception hall thought it was a gunshot.

Mr Ake, was a very busy man, it showed everywhere in his office and i need'nt anyone telling me.

After my phone call with Mama, she said things that shook me internally, she saw a vision about my spiritual life, complained of its dimnishing attitude and said other scary things.


I left the campus and went into the town. I had a party to attend, and Dani invited me, so i couldnt decline. It was an in house party, just as usual.

When the speakers started blasting sounds , the time was already evening and I couldnt stay out long if I wanted to go back to the hostel.

I waited in a corner for Dani's arrival. Some boys made out with their chiks as they enjoyed the moment.

The floodlight was red and it rolled ,making everyone redish in complexion.
I sipped my drink and looked at my watch.


'' Wanna dance? A guy asked in the loud music background.


I swirled round and saw him.

'' No.. I'm waiting for someone''

'' Come on, we are all waiting for someone, lets enjoy before they get here''

I dropped the glass cup and went outside. I was already furious, Dani had left me in hanging again. I brought out phone.


'' Well done , you hear! You have tried o. Next time dont dare invite me to a party you wont attend'

He was apologizing that he had night preps, all sorts and rubbish talk that didnt go down well with me.

'' I'll make it up to you. Izzy , I'm sorry ok''

I hissed and walked out the gate, put my phone back into the purse, I felt like I was followed.
I looked back and saw no one, I became afraid.

Someone touched me '' The party just started and you are leaving?

'' you again? Let go off my arm''

He was drunk and tried to behave funny. I wanted to scream then he brought out a knife and pointed it towards me.


'' please dont hurt me'' I begged .


' Then you'll do exactly as I say'' He came forward.


I already said my last prayers. I pitied my poor mother, and blamed myself for choosing a loose life, I waited for a miracle. None came.

I trembled at the mercy of the guy who might probably be the last person I see before i breathe my last.

She fixed her eyes on my scar and it pierced deep into my soul leaving me all cramped up inside. she tried to touch the skin surface where the scar had taken up its everlasting position as a reminder of what I suffered in the past, my uncle's hardness and brutality; his babric attitudes towards me and why uptil date, his death remained a mystery to everyone else but not to me.
She sipped her coffee, it steamed of nice aromas that were indeed aluring to my senses, then her fingers came forward , every pretty phalanges combined in a single mission : to touch my scar. Kate had never dared touching it, but maybe she did, I couldn't tell.

I withdrew my arms and pulled down the sleeves , I questioned the fearlessness of this new lady, she was outspoken and I enjoyed every bit of her convo but I won't let her spoil my happiness.





" you don't wanna touch it . Its gonna bite you " I said hoping she'd not ask questions.



" Oh don't be silly now " Kemi said " I just want to ---You know what?





" Spill it out " I said .



" I have never seen anyone with such a scar that looks so-- so scarrish "




I turned my eyes from one corner to another, looked at her and couldn't take my head off the fact that she just fabricated a new English word , I was in for an adventure with this lady. . I broke the silence ,after a siren bellowed past the streets and jolted me out of my thoughts.



" So tell me, Kemi . Why are you so inquisitive?
I could sense trouble .


" I have to admit, you are one hell of a mystery box and I would love to crack that hard knot you put up as defence "

" Really? .. Its good to know. Hence, we should take this further than just here, I could do things you obviously won't start to imagine, things that are so kinky and yet surprising in nature" I said and bit my lips.


She drew her head nearer and whispered something deep into my ears, something you don't get to hear so often.


" Don't tell anyone , Andrew this is a secret between us, I'm so wet down there right now. So wet, baby"




She growled like a tiger into my ear and almost bit it off.
We immediately made way to my car , things moved so fast that I forgot if I had paid for the coffee. I hoped someone would draw my attention to it . We started off right inside the car , I ignited the car engine and drove off immediately to a nearest motel .

Her arms smooched my back as she engaged me in a lip lock while I found the lock of the door with my fingers. Eventually we were in, the door gave way for us and not so long, she undid the entire vertical line of my shirt and dived for my belts, she tossed it to an arm length chair.


" Oh God-- Oh my-- " I mumbled as the tension was building up to an unbearable level.

She reached for my hard erected anatomy and did magical things down there.





" Oh dear-- what the f--"



I was on the road to ecstasy and total climax , I refused to let her stop even though we just met that fateful day. I jerked suddenly , not because I wanted to ejack but because a touch on my skin drove shivers down my spine.Her fingers glaced through it, It brought back memories I wanted to forget: Memories that haunted me , pain was the theme song.

" Stop-- stop , I -- just stop " I shouted and pushed her so hard she hit her head on the chair behind.



" I'm sorry , if I did anything wrong" Kemi's voice sounded ambivalent.



" Never , I mean never in your life touch my scar again"




" What's so important about the scar? And why are you yelling at me? Do you think I'm some cheap love peddler? In short this was a mistake , I shouldn't be here . mtcheww. I actually thought you were a gentle man "

She jolted up from the floor and grabbed her hand bag , I pulled up my pants and held her arms.




" Don't leave, I'm sorry-- I over reacted . Maybe its the heat or something , I'm just , I just had a bad day , but please don't touch the scar ,,try and avoid it . mmm?



" Tell me why, " She retorted in a loud but calm voice .




" Shhhhhh! Soon, but for now don't touch it "






Then my phone rang,
I pushed Kemi away gently and grabbed the ringing phone on the table.




" Yea -- Andy here, who is it? ". I asked the unknown caller





" Andy " Kate's voice echoed " let's meet, we need to talk. I can't tell you on the phone , let's meet, please"



I buttoned my shirts and pulled up my pants. What was so important , she wanted to meet in in person?



" uhm,--OK , where are you ?




" I'll text you the address" She replied .




I hang up the line and looked at Kemi's face , it was not so bright now and she wanted to know what was going on.



" Is she the one? The one, you - where are you going? You are not leaving me here are you?

" I'll explain everything later. I will call you OK but , right now , I have to go" I said and dashed out of the room .

She waited for an answer to her question , I had none for her. I could see how she breamed with anger through her eyes. My decision was final on the matter, I was not going to beg anyone.





" Mama, I'm not begging Kate to come back to this house , she left with her two legs and most return with them"





" You are such a foolish boy . This is not how I trained you . You have grown up to be just like your father, you know what He did and you simply followed his footsteps. You abandoned your legal wife for some cheap harlot and you call that being man enough"

I hated to admit to her that Dami was not my mistress and her daughter wasn't mine. Instead I let the sleeping dog, lay quietly.







" Mama, to be honest with you, Kate and I, in short mama, I don't love her anymore and I know what I mean because-- " I paused "But why Mama? Why are you people making this thing difficult for me? You know, Kate left me . And you know I did everything possible to make her happy , but she left even when she knew that it was not a wise decision "




I barely saw it coming but Mama gave me a brain resetting slap , the one that drove shivers down the spine.



" Keep quiet, " She said in Ikwere language ( our native tongue)


" What do you know about love? You think its easy to just eject your wife and jump over to another family, you think its so easy to change wife like clothes? Well guess what I won't accept that woman , no matter what she must have done to make you throw away your love for Kate'




We were not getting anywhere with the arguments and I wanted it to stop .I sat down and gently carresed my cheeks where she had landed the slap, if it were to be someone else, I would have given her the beating of her life.


" Mama" I began " If you truly want my happiness , then you will have to accept the new wife I am bringing home and her daughter too-"


" Gabe, your wife is pregnant "


I felt my heart quicken and the pace doubled. That was not the news I wanted to hear at a dreaded hour and time .

" What did you say? "



" You heard me loud and clear , believe me , that child she is carrying is the only reason why she hasn't filed a divorce paper against you . I can bodly you tell you that she has lost any atom of love in her heart ,for you. So don't think she is on the loosing end, my dear its you who will loose "




" What happens if she losses the baby? I asked without thinking twice .



" I don't know, but just know I won't forgive you, if you allow her slip out of your hands just like that "

I engrossed myself into deep thoughts and looked up to the wall clock , time was ticking very fast and I was behind schedule . I had reasons to doubt if the baby , Kate was carrying ,if it was really mine . It could have been Andrew's .
