Russia may seem to be surviving, the unnecessary hardship the country is suffering under sanctions is just as avoidable as the war itself.

First off, Hitler was actually successful but made 3 mistakes which are:

People need to understand that Putin caused the once neutral Ukraine become resolute in having NATO's backing.
By annexing Crimea, Russia made the Ukrainians realized how porous they were. This their new quest goes beyond the Ukrainian President. It is now the wish of majority of the Ukrainians.

In 2008, Ukraine began the process to join. Why didn't NATO grant it? Majority of Ukrainians were generally not keen on NATO, making the process slow. The next president decided Ukraine should remain a neutral state.

So what changed? -The annexation of Crimea.

The annexation of Crimea in 2014 opened their eyes to how insecure they are around the big bully. They now tilted from a neutral nation to about 70% of the Ukrainians wanting decisively to joining NATO.
This is evidenced in the way civilian population of Ukraine are willingly bearing arms to defend their land.

Apart from the majority of Ukrainians now resolute in wanting to join, other smaller neighboring countries are watching Russia and will definitely revisit their interests in joing NATO, or at least tilt from being neutral.

Violating a country's territorial integrity based on 'Areas of Influence' is not longer admissible in international relations.

What Russia should have done was to take the fight to America by also seeking to re-establish military bases next door to America. That way, they are better poised to force America to tune down the eastward expansion of NATO.
