Jarus:
I wrote this for 10MinutesWith, a UK-based career and education platform.

http://www.10minuteswith.com/blog/does-undergraduate-course-study-really-matter

As an African blogger with focus on education and career mentoring, one common question I get from student readers from time to time is, “How marketable is my course of study?” This is surprising given the fact that a student is expected to know the marketability of his course of study before opting for it in the first place. But anyone that is familiar with the educational system of African countries, especially Nigeria, will know that many students are more bothered about getting admission into University than the relevance of the course of study that they are pursuing.

It is common in Nigeria for a student to apply for a certain course, say Economics, but due to the inability to meet the cut-off score for admission into the chosen department, he is offered admission to study a less competitive course, say Sociology. The implication of this is that someone that has primary interest in one course will find himself being forced, so to speak, to study another course because that was the course “given” to him by the University he applied to.

Although a few undergraduates will stand their ground and do not mind spending another year at home to retake the entrance examinations, many students take the offered courses because they are not confident that they will get admitted into their desired department even after retaking the entrance examination. The latter set of students are the ones that come to the internet to ask for the marketability of the courses of study offered to them.

But does course of study at undergraduate level really matter? The truth is, except for highly specialised professions like Medicine, Engineering et cetera, you can become almost anything without having your first degree in that line. Even for Engineering, many postgraduate schools allow you to do your Masters in engineering courses with a related Science first degree.

In some cases, you don’t even need a second degree in a specific career line before you become a professional in that industry, all you need to do is to gather practical experience or run some courses in the desired field.

The current president of the World Bank, Jim Yong Kim, is my favorite example. The Korean-American studied Medicine at Harvard Medical School for his first degree. He now heads a Financial Institution. There are many top investment bankers that studied courses that are far off from Finance or Banking. Even Christine Lagarde, the current Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), another financial and economic institution, studied, not economics, not Finance, but Law, for her first degree. She is now a Finance guru.

A good number of the best accountants around the world studied Economics. In fact, I don’t usually advise my mentees to study Accounting. All you need to do to become an Accountant is to write relevant accounting professional examinations like that of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales (ICAEW) or other recognised accounting professional exams of the local country. I have friends who studied courses as far off as Agriculture but are now working as Accountants because they wrote and passed the qualifying exams of a relevant accounting body.

First degree, most times, is just to broaden the student’s horizon, to improve his cognitive processes. It hardly determines what one goes on to be in life. This is why I normally advise young students to make the best of whatever courses they are studying and not to be demotivated by their inability to get the course of their desired study.

PoliticsCement Price Reduction And 2015 Election Permutation, by crowniran(op): 6:49pm On Nov 04, 2014
President Jonathan and his Strategists thinks Nigerians
are fools. The much-celebrated reduction on the price of
cement by Dangote Cement Company from N1,700 to
N1000 is a bonanza packaged for electioneering. Nothing
more! Thus, I refuse to be cajoled and coaxed.
Here is the deal! Value Added Tax has been WAVED by
Federal Government for DANGOTE CEMENT COMPANY with
effective from NOV 2014 to FEB 2015. No TAX payment for
Four months! Presidential election hold in February 2015.
Dangote Cement not to personally pay TAX from November
2014 to February 2015. Why the noise about the reduction
in cement price? Who pays the waved TAX to FIRS?
Cement Subsidy to be paid by TAN to FIRS?
Country People, Dr. Aliko Dangote is a Capitalist! A
bourgeoisie for real! Capitalists are not father Christmas!
The major aim of Capitalists is to maximize profit! Dangote
wouldn't have reduced the price of his cement by about
35% if there's nothing in the offing for him.
The deal has been exposed. Nigerians are not fools as the
transformation team thinks. Nothing has changed. All na

Let's Discuss Yoruba At The Hands Of Buhari, We'll
DIscuss GEJ Later...
Yoruba Victims Of Buhari's Tyrannical Reign.
Now, the leaders of the opposition Party thinks he can sell
Yorubas to this unrepentant tyrant who refuses till today
to apologize to the Yorubas for nearly wiping out all their
leaders?
Victim 1 - Pa Awolowo had his house ransacked, passport
seized he could not go abroad for medical treatment. His
home in Ikenne was also surrounded by soldiers.
Victim 2 - Pa Adekunle Ajasin, former Gov, Ondo State.
Arrested, sentenced to over 100 years. Pa Ajasin is known
not to have spent one kobo of his security vote and had
only one house to his name in his native Owo till his
death.
Victim 3 - Pa Lateef Jakande, former Gov, Lagos State.
Same as Pa Ajasin. Tried in kangaroo Court and sentenced
to over 100 years imprisonment.
Victim 4 - Cicero, Bola Ige. former Gov, Oyo State.
Sentenced to over 100 years on corruption charges.
Victim 5 - Papa Bisi Onabanjo former Gov, Ogun State.
Jailed for over 100 years. Pa Onabanjo was whisked away
from hospital where he was receiving treatment straight to
prison on Buhari's instructions.
Do note that all the governors were found not guilty by
Courts who tried them however Buhari demanded many
retrials until a guilty verdict was reached for all of them by
the Courts.
Victim 6 - Bisi Akande, former Gove. Jailed on corruption
charges. Now, Akande and Buhari are together in the APC.
Is Akande no longer corrupt, Buhari?
Victim 7 - Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Fela received 10 years for
being vocal against Buhari's regime. Buhari said then, he
has resolved to deal with the "fela problem"
Victim 8 - Ooni of Ife. Seized his passport and prevented
him from travelling abroad.
Victim 9 - Tunde Thompson. Journalist jailed for reporting
against government.
Victim 10 - Tai Solarin. Jailed for speaking against the
govt. Ironically, what Solarin said/wrote then and was
jailed for by Buhari's regime is nothing compared to
things Buhari says against the present government.
Victim 11 - Ayo Ojewunmi became blind in jail after Buhari
blatantly refused to release him to get medical attention.
He died soon after he was eventually released
Victim 12 - Busari Adelakun suffered same fate as
Ojewunmi. His ailment though was ulcer which killed him.
Victim 13 - The many many Yoruba youth slaughtered in
the north in 2011 because Buhari lost the election. Buhari
could have curbed the violence but waited for days before
public opinion forced him to make a statement on radio
condemning the violence.
He has prepared us now for 2015 by saying "their dogs
and baboons will be soaked in blood" if he does not win
the election in 2015.

Unreserved Apology for Posting PDP Lies About Osun
Tribunal Online!!!
The TV station went ahead yesterday and pasted a story
circulated by the PDP that its candidate in the Osun
August 9th election has secured more votes in the re-
counting allegedly ordered by the tribunal. Facts later
emerged that there was no recounting going on at all in
Osun not to talk of any party securing or losing more
votes, the tribunal is even on recess.
It would be recalled that Nigeria was last week inundated
with a story that Osun Assembly has been dissolved by
the court only for the print out from the court to show it
as wicked manipulation of a mere academic exercise of
deleting an outdated application for the court to be able to
focus on the currently subsisting application by INEC.
It has been one-week-one-lie!!! What do we expect next?
We wonder how Osun PDP shun out these serial stories
that are always found to have no connection with reality
but more of hallucination.
