Thank you crushsugar for all the updates, i wish to ask you to help clarify the amount that is added as increment to a band 5 Nurse starting work at the topmost point of band 5 which is almost similar to lowest band 6 point? How many years will such Nurse work before receiving promotion to Band 6? Thanks.
I know the scale for band 5 is 24,214 -30,112. Increment is about 1,000 yearly. To be promoted to band 6, you'll would need specific experience depending on the advertised role. So, it is left for you to improve yourself. The band roles promotion interval is yearly.

Hello crushsugar,

I have been a silent follower of your thread and it's been wonderful.

However, I have a few enquiries:

1. How did you solve the accommodation issue when you landed in the UK?
Was it your agency who helped out? Did you initially book a hotel to lodge before getting accommodation?

2. I know there are furnished and unfurnished apartments for rent. What are your thoughts as regards the pros and cons of renting either.

Thanks
1. My employer got me the accommodation for 2 months. Some employers do for 3 months. I didn't need to lodge in the hotel because my destination was not far from Manchester airport and there were available trains when I arrived. Even if you need to pass the night in the hotel, your agency/ employer will organize that.
2. It depends on who you are renting for and for how long. If you are just trying to find your feet, you wouldn't want to get an accommodation that is not furnished even though you can get cheap used ones. If you wouldn't live in the accommodation for long, I don't feel it's wise to buy stuffs that you wouldn't need in the next few months or pay much to move around. By my personal observation, you don't actually pay more just because the house is furnished, I have not noticed that.

Bank hall, pay with machine, withdraw with machine, talk to people when you have issues.

I have over 10 years experience but it doesn't reflect in my offer letter, I'm to start at the lowest pay in band 5. Please is there something I can do about it before resumption from here in Nigeria. Thank you.
You can contest that.
Mine has been upgraded.
My project manager told me that the salary amount on my offer came from my agency and their excuse was that I had not worked in an acute setting for long. But my project manager felt the most important thing is that I have been practicing for 7years. She spoke with the recruitment manager who asked her to do as she pleased. The updated one came the next day.
You should also understand that when you are looking for accommodation, your salary especially if you have a family should look nice as they want yo be sure that you can pay for it.

Thank you, with regards to payment based on experience, is it the experience from Nigeria or from start of work in the uk. Then, how does promotion work over there from band 5 to 6 or is it by number of years spent
Your payment is based on the years of experience you have in Nigeria. Infact I just discovered that it works that way to today when I went to my project manager's office. My years of experience didn't reflect on my pay but was reflected on that of my colleagues. I queried it, and should be sorted out soon.
Promotion is based on your interest and experience and courses you have obtained. Each band take about 2years depending on you.

[quote author=famzynet post=81409113]Please keep your post rolling with more pics. I look forward to seeing pics at Man Utd ground and Ethihad stadium. I know you are busy with studies but just steal a day to visit those places. Those two places easily come to mind when Manchester is mentioned.

I will do that soon.

My weekend experience:
I went to a nearby town to view an apartment and as usual, I took my guide: Google map. Got to the town and followed my map and it told me I had arrived but this was the hospital, I asked a staff who told me the street is just behind but he doesn't know the way there. Na so I dey ask dey go, ended up getting into a particular close, I was asking the man I met when his dog came out to greet me... lol. I was practically shivering and the man reassured me, the dog just dey lick my leg and I was just stiff. The man asked me if I was still afraid, I said yes, he asked the dog to go in and continued giving me directions. I felt bad though because dogs are their family members and the dog was just being nice. If it was small, I guess I would have managed but this is big and black, and it's the closest I have ever been to a dog all my life. I pray for a better font next time, but for now, I still fear dogs. By the way, I couldn't view the apartment, the shakara with houses too much because population of persons looking for accommodation is on the high side. This is not the first time it is happening. Any advice from experts are welcome.

I love your post and I am following. It is good work that you are doing here. Helping others out. Keep it up.

I'll be visiting Manchester in October ending. I will like to know what the weather will be like when that time comes.

I wish you success in your OSCE.
Thank you, how was your trip?

depends on which part of UK you are travelling to.
Its meant to be summer right now but the weather is so unpredictable.

Just get ready for summer and winter so you wont be surprised.

enjoy your holiday!
That's why they check the weather forecast daily with some surprises though. Temperature where I am and not close to the sea is between 20-11° C which is ok for them but we have to be on sweaters and jackets.
For me, let winter hold it peace small, I never adapt finish.

Congratulations on your new level.

I'll like to know the advantages a nurse licensed in an area of specialty( ICU) has over a nurse with only a diploma. And how possible is it to be trained in an area of specialty over there.
Thank you.
With my little experience they pay better with specialties but sometimes with consideration to years of experience. You'll still do the adult nursing CBT and OSCE.
You can always get training opportunities to strengthen yourself in your area.

Thanks so much for this thread. Do they serve meals when on duty or nurses have to buy or bring from home. Then what shifts do nurses run over there. Thank you
No meals are not served on duty but you have breaks to eat. Either bring your home cooked meals or buy at the canteen.
Your shifts depends on what you want. It can be long days 12 hour shifts for 3 days a week or short days 7.5 hour shifts for 5days a week.

Crushsugar pls I have a silly question.
Why are their roads always clean? is it that they don't have sand or people don't throw things on the ground
Lol
It is the tarred/tiled roads first of all, I have not seen an untarred street that means less sand. They have waste bins everywhere so things are not trashed carelessly.

congrats on ur new job and life. Quick questions

1. Must u write the 2nd exam in u.k? Can u write it elsewhere?

2. Do u need experience to qualify to write the exam? How many yrs experience?

3. Do u earn enough to be able to bring ur spouse and support him till he can get a job?

Thanks sis wink
1. The part 2 exam is OSCE done in specific centres within the UK, about 3. It has to be done here

2. You don't need experience anymore with nmc but just have your credentials.

3. Yes I do

Update: life continues, I am at peace with myself. This period is for house hunting. I have not been finding it funny sha. It seems like the houses are rented as soon as they are advertised. I have gone to view a new one yesterday and the landlord said about 6persons have viewed the property shocked. I am hopeful I will get good news though cos exams are fast approaching and I need to move out of the free accommodation this month end.
Lesson for the week, our perceptions of of words, expressions and phrases are different, we must be alert to how we are being understood because casual word/action can mean something serious to another person.

No matter the cost, i think its mostly more economical for families to move together. I have seen tier 2 dependents denied visa before, thgh a small proportion

IHS fee rose from £200/year just in Dec 2018 and became £400 in February 2019. Now people have started paying £500 per year. Due to the unpredictability of immigration related cost for dependent, i would always suggest families move

If your employer refuses to cover maintenance for family, that puts you under pressure to save for maintenance cost.

Emotional support during those early stages of settling is also invaluable.
IHS is now 1,200 for 3years.
I agree with the emotional support part. Maybe speaking for myself, if family were here my attention would be focused. Don't get me wrong, I am doing well at work, academically and otherwise but there's a place for emotional presence. For being economical, you pay for your dependents whether you are leaving together or not, the only difference is your employer would provide accommodation for at least 2 months which would provide sufficient time for the whole family to be stable. If anyone can afford to leave with family, go ahead. But if you have young children, remember you would have to pay for child care undecided

While it to dream big, I have to remind us that no society is perfect. You must define yourself everywhere you find yourself. But truth is some might be better than others. If you come here just for money, yes you will get two jobs or more to do but never throw away your life in the process. Don't just move because everyone is moving. Ask your own self why?

Happy weekend my people.
Briefing;
My week was cool even if I am still trying to understand oyibo and they are still trying to understand me when speaking but we are getting along. Prep for OSCE is on.
So far I have learnt how to celebrate myself after working so hard at the end if the month. Life is meant to be enjoyed. These people don't joke with their leaves and weekend.
Small gist; a colleague of mine had issues with the toaster and it burnt bread. Before we knew fire alarm went off and maintenance people showed up in less than 5min, the next 5 minutes fire fighters showed up. The maintenance people had to tell them there's no cause for alarm. Me I just dey there dey wonder many things....

Good day
I have been following your thread and it's been quite inspiring, I did art in secondary school, and have a few professional certificates.i want to change career What steps can I take in being a nurse? I wouldn't mind having a diploma or an associate degree. How many years did it take you to complete your diploma?
Diploma takes 3years
You can choose any school of nursing
Entry requirements: credit at least in maths, English, biology, chemistry and physics.
They have entrance examinations and interviews. Shortlisted candidates then start the journey of 3 years.
Degree requires 5 credits also with jamb score requirements for different institutions. It's 5 years
