How much influence should aunties have on their nieces? In many African cultures, aunties provide counseling to their young nieces as they age from adolescence to adulthood.

When it comes to marriage, these aunties prepare their nieces for the challenges that lie ahead.

But for the Banyankole people in Southwestern Uganda, the aunt does more than the above, especially during the marriage.

The primary responsibility of the aunt is to confirm that the groom Tis potent and that the bride has defended her virginity before the marriage is consummated. As a potency test for the groom, the aunt is sometimes required to have sex with the groom for confirmation of his potency and virility.

She also has to “test” if the bride is still a virgin before they are allowed to consummate their marriage.

In other traditions, the aunt is said to go as far as listening in or watching as the bride and groom have sex in order to prove the couple’s potency.

Inasmuch as this practice may sound weird, it shows how the people of Banyankole, particularly the Bahima tribe hold virginity in high esteem.

As soon as a Banyankole girl is eight, she goes through a lot of restrictions to prepare her for marriage.

When other children her age in other cultures are out having fun and playing, a girl in this part of Uganda is mostly kept indoors, where she is fed beef and millet porridge and forced to drink milk in large quantities so that she becomes fat.

Being fat is synonymous with beauty among the Banyankoles.

When she starts developing breasts, she is also asked by her parents to abstain from sexual activities.

It is the duty of a Banyankole father to find a wife for his son as he pays the bridewealth as well. This consists of some cows, goats and pots of beer, depending on how rich a person is.

Once the bride price is paid, the marriage preparations begin. On the wedding day, there is a lot of feasting at the bride’s home, where the father is expected to slaughter a bull.

At the bridegroom’s home, there is another feast where the marriage is consummated. This is after the bride’s aunt has “tested” her niece’s purity and slept with the groom to also check his potency.

Police Finally Confirms Death of CP Christine Alalo in Ethiopian Airlines Crash

The Uganda Police Force has finally confirmed the death of its senior officer Commissioner of Police (CP) Christine Alalo in the Sunday morning crash of a Boeing 737 aircraft belonging to Ethiopian Airlines.

The aircraft which was leaving Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa headed to Nairobi Kenya reportedly crashed, six minutes after leaving Bole International Airport.

A total of 149 passengers and 8 flight crew members all perished in the accident.

After the crash, reports started circulating on Social Media that CP Alalo has died but Police’s Chief Political Commissar, AIGP Asan Kasingye was quick to dismiss the claims.

“This officer is safe. She wasn’t on the plane. She flew Turkish. This is information I am getting from our officers in Mogadishu. She had travelled to Italy with Turkish Airlines,” said Kasingye on Sunday.

Police would however come out on Monday afternoon and confirm CP Alalo’s death.

Three suspects have appeared in court for stripping a woman naked in Anambra state, flogging her in public, and filming it (read here).

According to some human rights advocates following up with the case, Ifeanyi Azota, 40, his "wife" Azotani Toochukwu, 43, and Ogochukwu Nwankwo, 33, are currently in court after they publicly humiliated Okafor Ogochukwu, a widow, after she was reportedly caught having sex with Ifeanyi.

She was stripped and physically assaulted by Ogochukwu Nwankwo while Azotani Toochukwu filmed and all this happened in the presence of Ifeanyi Azota and he did nothing about it (read here).

But Ifeanyi Azota has allegedly now said that he wasn't legally married to Toochukwu, therefore, he wasn't exactly cheating on her.

The victim said she and Ifeanyi had been friends for years before she got married and moved on. But after her husband died in a car crash and Ifeanyi reached out to her on social media and asked her to visit him, she decided to oblige, unaware of what the future held.

Iwuala Nnamdi Paulcy, who is currently in court following up with the case, alleged that Ogochukwu Nwankwo tried to bribe her way through with ?5 million but he intervened.

A woman who lost three friends to the ill-fated Ethiopian airplane has finally opened up about how she survived the crash by a whisker.

In an interview with Citizen TV, Elizabeth Kabuth revealed that she had a bad feeling about the flight and that her stomach was not quite right and so she decided to dash off to a toilet nearby.

A 25-year-old panel beater identified as Adejoh Ojonugwa has been arrested in Ondo State for stealing underwear belonging to his elder brother's wife.

He was apprehended by officers of Ondo State Police Command after the case was reported. The suspect was nabbed alongside one Prophet Olajide Ogunleye of the Celestial Church of Christ, Ibanujemidopin Parish in Uso Local Council Area of the state.

During interrogation with reporters, Ojonugwa, a native of Kogi State, said he only visited the prophet for spiritual cleansing as he needed a solution to his problem. Narrating his side of the story, he said: "I went to seek spiritual cleansing from Prophet Ogunleye and when I got there, he prayed fervently for me. In fact, he asked me about the job I do, and I told him that I am a panel beater, which has been my trade for a very long time.
