Retired Air Force lieutenant colonel Christine Mau, who now works for Lockheed Martin training F-35 pilots, says ‘flying is the ultimate equalizer’ she talked about sexism and ‘killing bad guys’

When she was a child, Christine Mau’s home in Laguna Hills, Calif., sat beneath the flight path of F-4 jets screeching across the sky from the since-decommissioned El Toro Marine Corps Air Station in Irvine.

“There I was as a five-year-old, looking up at these big, bad F-4s just making noise and just looking awesome,” Mau, 44, told MarketWatch. “I told my mom, ‘I want to do that someday.’”

The urge to fly runs in the family. Her father was an Air National Guard C-130 pilot turned Continental Airlines UAL, +0.50% pilot, and her grandfather flew the B-24 bomber in WWII.

But Mau didn’t see her ambitions crystallize until around sixth grade, when she watched Maverick and Goose fly an F-14 Tomcat in the 1986 film “Top Gun.”

‘There I was as a five-year-old, looking up at these big, bad F-4s just making noise and just looking awesome. I told my mom, ‘I want to do that someday.’

Mau nabbed her top choice of airplane after pilot training: the two-seat F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet, which she considered “the most impressive airplane at that time.” She flew the F-15E for most of her career, clocking more than 500 combat hours in Operations Iraqi Freedom, Southern Watch, Northern Watch and Enduring Freedom.

“I loved that you had a crew working together,” she said, referring to the pilot and weapon systems officer involved. “It’s also a total badass fighter that drops every bomb in our inventory.”

Following the release of the Nigerian student, Ms Zainab Aliyu, detained by Saudi Arabia government for alleged drug trafficking, the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Northern State chapter, Tuesday commended President Muhammadu Buhari’s led administration and urged him to equally secure the release of Leah Sharibu who has spent months in the Boko Haram captivity.

The 14-year-old Leah Sharibu was kidnapped on February 19, 2018, by Boko Haram terrorists, from her school, Government Girls Science and Technical Secondary School in Dapchi, Bursari local government area of Yobe state.

She was abducted alongside 109 other girls. While most of the girls were released, Sharibu was denied freedom after refusing to renounce her Christian faith for Islam.

A member of the Presidential Committee on North East Initiative (PCNI), Dr. Sidi Ali Mohammed, yesterday disclosed that Boko Haram fighters receive $3000 (an equivalent of N1, 080,000 daily) as allowance, while Nigerian soldiers get a paltry N1000.

He spoke during the presentation of International Monetary Fund (IMF) Sub-Sahara Africa’s Regional Economic Outlook Report in Abuja.

IMF’s Economist, Siddharth Kothari, stressed that conflicts cause decline in investment, trade and productivity, as well as destruction of physical and human capital.

Mohammed, who is Head, Humanitarian Assistance and Rehabilitation of PCNI, stated that Boko Haram, which started as a movement based on an ideology and whose members were used and dumped by politicians has been hijacked and now operates like a cartel.

Symptoms of Gonorrhea:

Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (retd), said yesterday, that his government built three refineries, the ones in Port Harcourt, Warri, Kaduna for domestic consumption and had planned to build more refineries to export refined products, instead of giving the crude to various countries.

This came as the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr Ibe Kachikwu said it will be impossible for the Federal Government to remove subsidy on fuel at this time in order to protect the people.

They both spoke at the second International Conference and Exhibition of the Oil and Gas Trainers Association of Nigeria, OGTAN, in Lagos.

Gowon, who chaired the event said: “I will like you to know that during our time, our plan was to build five export-oriented refineries to export instead of giving the crude to various countries.

“The three refineries, Port Harcourt, Warri, Kaduna, were designed for domestic consumption and we had planned that if our consumption grows more than the three can do, we will transfer one of the export-oriented refineries for home consumption.”
