leodegreat: Good dearie. the truth is that you have started improving it for making the move to speak well. English has come to stay as far as we are concerned. And we all should constantly look forward to speaking better. These steps might help: 1. Read from good Novels. the truth is that reading culture is dying in our country and in recent future, Nigeria will have more illiterate than we have now, because many people are not willing to read.
2. Write down new expressions, phrases and words from the novels you read: this is essentially helpful. if you make use you them.
3. Try to Speak often... seize every opportunity to speak when you are in gathering. if possible make little jottings, and make your contributions politely. 4. Listen to good speakers, like Chimamanda Adichie, Ngugi wa Thiong'o and others. These supply you with good dictates you need in public speaking. They are successful and good speaks you could learn a lot from.
5. Pick up a topic and speak about it: In the comfort of your room, make rehearsal as though you have a topic to present. check your capability, speak on the topic and make some necessary correction.
6. move with people who will make you speak always. This is rather important, when you move with people who make you speak your native language, then you will make little progress in spoken English.
Then you are on your way of being a successful speaker. No one knows it all, we only need to try. you could be the best, me to. self help is all you need. Alright ma, thanks for your your contribution. |

adeleke5140: Hey. I find this post encouraging. I'm also on a quest to improve on how I speak. I'm trying to learn Received pronunciation and I've been trying to emulate how a Brit speaks. I wouldn't call it British English ( there's actually not anything like "British English" but let's say it leans towards how people talk in The UK than American English.
So here's what I did. I found a couple of YouTube channels, e.g English with Lucy, Papa A.Y and I also listen to the BBC on television. Another great resource I use is Podcasts. They help with listening skills and I try to hear how words are pronounced and I emulate it.
It's not gonna be easy I tell you but if you want progress you'd see yourself improving daily. There's the stigma you'd face from people saying you're forming and what not. Don't be dettered, keep practicing. Alright thanks so much. Although, I haven't use podcast before. |

redpencil: Improvement of vocabulary expression is a conscious task.
You need to:
1.) Listen to more English programmes on TV and Radio
2.) Buy and read Newspapers and Newsletters
3.) Try to use those words and expressions you learnt in your day to day english expressions.
Also you can get CBT Android App, it has over 5000 english grammar and vocabulary for practise. Check my signature ( Note, it is not free). Alright Sir |

Thank you very much Sir. eWyse: Expose yourself to new environments and new people, make new friends (obviously those who speak better than you do) and engage yourself in conversations everyday. Consume more international content- English speaking music, movies, radio, news, YouTube etc.
Lastly, read, read, read, read and read: Books, articles, magazines, etc.
Cut out pidgin English/broken, make deliberate effort to converse only in proper English.
You will get better gradually. |

kjhova: Been a long time I made a comment on NL due to the amazing drop in brain power of members over time. However, your question elicits a desire to educate you & many others on this topic, even if I sense your pessimism. So I comment thus:
-Nigeria signed Bilateral Currency Swap Agreement (BCSA) with China in April, 2018 and the BCSA became effective in August same year. -Initial agreement is for 3yrs (2018-2021) with total volume of CNY15B (N720B) which average to CNY5B (N240B) annually. -Nigeria's 1yr import from China from Sept. 2018 to Aug. 2019 was N1.7Tr (CNY35B) which is over 700% of available CNY for the year under the BCSA. -Therefore, the current BCSA can only finance 15% of Nigeria's annual import from China. -The above, indicates that the BCSA volume will have to be increased when due for renewal in 2021 as it is currently oversubscribed. -Over-subscription indicates that the market highly appreciate the BCSA. -The BCSA has aided Nigeria's ability to manage our FX (i.e. dollar) & renewal in 2021 will further aid our FX stability. -All the above explains the diff the BCSA has made to our economy. As for the common man, it depends on how common the individual is. A policy that helps the fish farmer to produce more fish for the market will not necessarily put money in the pocket of the buyer to buy more fish. It is the duty of the "common man" to understand the dynamics of the economy & position himself in a way to benefit. Rem, information is king! -Performance indicators to pay attention to: Naira stability, FX availability, market liquidity, growth in foreign trade, increased BCSA burse etc. are a few for any genuinely interested questioner to review for success. -Future prospects for Nigeria: Increased trade with China (Import/Export), become the financial hub for Africa-China business, Acceptance of Naira as swap currency with Chinese Yuan for many other African countries in Back-to-Back swap deals with Nigeria.
For shorts, the BCSA with China is a fantastic deal for Nigeria and subsequent swap deals between Nigeria and other African economies can only be a blessing to Nigeria and our economic partners across Africa. Anybody who sees otherwise will NEVER see good in this country and needs not be given attention by real citizens of this country! Thanks for the information Sir. I really gain a lot from your post. |

AndroBlaze: It's been ages since I read those books my self, books like Mine Boy, Zambia shall be free, No Longer at Ease and a host of others under the African Writer Series.
My special mention would however be African Child by Camara Laye, a truly evocative and spectacular read- to think it was even translated from French, a great little book. I read it twice(Camara Laye), I'm reading it presently. I'm currently at page 12. I love that book. |

AndroBlaze: All the examples you mentioned above have nothing to do with English skills but your ability to adapt to a different culture.
You need to be more confident in your Africaness, after reading your post above I'd advise you read more books and articles from African authors to build up your self esteem. I recommend literature from our golden age in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Do you mind listing some of it? Thanks |
