These days, talent acquisition specialist are as concerned about suitability for the job, as much as the technical abilities of potential employees. Chances are, if you made it past the aptitude test, you’re technically gifted. Beyond your ability to code or your proficiency at performing foolproof financial analysis, your would-be employer is intent on finding out if you’re able to relate with your clients and colleagues professionally.

He wants to know if you’re able to make presentations only in manners expected of professionals. He is as well interested in your ability to work with teams of people, and sometimes lead them, because eventually, the company achieves sustainable success only when the parts work in tandem with each other to achieve corporate goals.

This is the crux of the Assessment Centre. Also referred to as a selection centre, an assessment centre seeks to assess your possession of the particular range of skills and personal attributes that would guarantee superior job performance.

At the Assessment Centre, candidates are grouped into cohorts. As a group, you are assigned tasks, required to come up with workable solutions and make presentations to decision makers. These tasks usually are a simulation of real-life business situations – report writing, PowerPoint presentations, pitching to clients, negotiations, leading teams on tasks and handling specific roles on teams.
In addition to group think, you might also be required to perform some In-tray Exercises (similar to the ones you’d find on the job everyday). The secret to aceing an assessment centre is Teamwork. If you’re all for ‘Independence’, it’s time to ditch that mindset. Virtually all the projects you’d be working on when you eventually get the job require collaboration and knowledge-sharing one way or another.

At the centre, bear in mind that recruiters are keenly observing your abilities to function as team leader and team player seamlessly. Don’t hog all of the attention to yourself; make room for effective cross-fertilization of ideas.

All members of the group could either get selected together, get rejected as a team.
Show yourself as someone who has the ability to work, and thrive in a team. You might not be the smartest person on the team, and not always be the team leader.

If you’re unable to build proper working relationships at the assessment centre, the recruiter is unconvinced that you’d build those skills at the real gig.
