nija80: don,t know who posted this rubbish. who told the op that the refinery is ailing,do you know the numbers of tankers that load here every day.things may not be 100% here,but within the available resources i don't think the refinery is ailing.as per the cause fire and refineries are like brothers and sisters that should not make love to each other,fire i mean naked flame though enclosed separate the different components of crude in the refineries,so the environment is always charged at all times.so those talking about embezzlement and file burning do not no what they are talking about.for once i am proud of my colleague and other sisters organizations like NGC,PPMC ,NPA and NPDC that came to assist.

Like it or not, it is ailing. NNPC used to be capable of taking care of all our petroleum needs without resorting to importation. Now, they can't even cater for up to 50%

I just watched a Top Gear video where Jeremy (for those who know him) was comparing a new model (not sure which year) BMW diesel 535d with a petrol 545i. Though not as fast around the bends on the track (it had a smaller-sized engine &, besides, who does slalom times on the road?), the diesel variant was more economical & even quieter than its petrol counterpart.

The main reason why Nigerians (& the world at large) avoid car diesels is the fear of change (which I'm also guilty of). The saying "Once beaten, twice shy!" has given a bad name to car diesel engines. Former experiences with old diesel engines (pre-dating Ikenna's Peugeot HDI's) such as slow acceleration, noisy engines, very few technicians & high cost of maintenance, can aptly be described by the notion, "Once a convict, always a convict!" It would take a mighty act of valour (such as 100mpg in the city, and very readily available cheap parts) to convince the jury (car owners) otherwise. As for those advocating against using diesel engines due to the quality of diesel sold in the market, let it be known that diesel engines have a wider range of tolerance of fuels they can use, some even going as far as running on vegetable oils, as against gasoline engines (in some newer model petrol engined cars, if the pump contains the wrong kind of petrol, the car's fuel tank would lock itself against the nozzle entering it). Also, the scenario of letting your fuel tank go empty is ill-advised in both petrol & diesel engines.
