Fashion / Is Wizkid Africa’s Hottest Pop Star At The Moment? by damilogogle(m): 2:52pm On Aug 14, 2018 |
The controversy as always been there about who is Africa’s biggest artist at the moment. No doubt, two names which keep popping up are Star Boy Record Boss Wizkid and DMW CEO Davido. The world’s fashion bible, Vogue, however believe Wizkid is the undisputed hottest African popstar by almost any measure. This came after the launch of his Pop Shop in New York, United States of America. Read their editorial below:- This past Saturday, Wizkid currently Africa’s hottest pop star by almost any measure unveiled his new capsule collection with a takeover of Reign in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District. Better known as a destination for hard-to-find Y-3 gear, the New York City streetwear shop was remade, floor to ceiling, in Wizkid’s image for the pop-up, complete with a glass dome emblazoned with “Starboy” (the name of the new collection, as well as Wizkid’s music imprint and longtime nickname). From this futuristic perch, the Starboy himself performed and posed for a veritable flash mob of devotees. “For me, when I dropped my last project, I just felt it was time to do something for my fans, so they could have almost like, a piece of me,” explained Wizkid, unwinding from the impromptu concert in the shop’s secluded backyard. “I sat down with my team, and we did a couple designs, we designed some shirts and some bandanas, and we just decided to put it up for the fans—something we intend to do like every three months, put out new collections.” Afrobeats, a scene centered in Lagos, fuses the melodic sense of West African Highlife and Palm-wine music with a range of Black Atlantic sounds, including dancehall, Soca, and U.K. soul, to arrive at a truly Pan-African pop place. (In fact Wizkid and some other Nigerian artists describe the movement as “Afropop” and avoid the term “Afrobeats,” which was coined in the U.K. to describe the emerging sound). Lest those new to it underestimate the street value of a piece of Wizkid—the genre’s undisputed king—the shop was jam-packed with hundreds of die-hard fans feverishly snapping pics and exuding Beatlemania-levels of nervous energy at being so close to their idol (he generally performs at arena-size venues in New York and London). They were also ready to scream the words to every song he performed, from his international crossover “Ojuelegba” (which inspired Drake and Skepta to jump on a remix) to more recent hits like “Soco.” Though the crowd strongly represented the West African diaspora, it was sprinkled with faces from all over the world, including shoppers from Europe and Asia, who also showed interest in getting their hands on the exclusive gear. The collection, which includes a Starboy-branded tour jacket style bomber and a Made in Lagos green and purple gradient tee, is admirably minimal, given the ubiquity of splashier West African prints and Black Panther knockoffs over the last year or two. Interpolating Wizkid’s brand with subtle references to classic rock memorabilia and pop culture (the Made in Lagos design, for instance, has a distinct Lost in Space feel that echoes the Star Trek inspired font of the Starboy logo), resulting in pieces that pair as easily with a Bape hoodie as a Bad Brains tee. As he tells it, the star only had two criteria for his creative team when they brainstormed the look: “One: simple and two: fresh. It has to have a more universal appeal to it. Something you can be proud wearing not just as a Starboy fan but proud being an African,” he said. “But I also want people around the world to be able to wear it. Even if you’re not from Lagos, it should be fashionable enough for you to just throw it on. I want people to look back and be like, Yo, I had that Wizkid T- shirt when it dropped.” Made in Lagos is the title of his forthcoming album (currently slated to drop on October 1) and putting Lagos on the pop cultural map is very much Wizkid ’s mission at the moment, even if it means coming all the way to the streetwear mecca of New York to do so. Still, the Afropop ambassador looks quite at home in downtown Manhattan, even if Ojuelegba (the Lagos neighborhood which was home to his first studio) is an ocean away. “New York style is very, very similar to Lagos style,” he said. “Because New York is a cosmopolitan city, you have so many different people from different parts of the world, just throwing on whatever they like, whatever they think looks good. Lagos style is the same; when you stand on the street, that is like a fashion show on its own.” This stateside launch also hints at a larger American invasion in the works. Although he wasn’t ready to talk details, the singer did reveal he has “a little project I’ve been working on with a very big producer, here in America, something I’m very excited about.” Initially reluctant to pinpoint the project anywhere more specific than “America,” when pressed, Wizkid ended the interview on a single tantalizing word: “Atlanta.” For those who’ve witnessed the way Wizkid’s style has impacted global music and culture from Lagos to London, the possibility of a major confluence of trap and beats can only mean one thing: America, there’s a new Starboy in town.

Sports / TV Host Trevor Noah Rebuked For Joking 'africa' Not France Won World Cup by damilogogle(m): 3:47pm On Jul 20, 2018 |
PARIS -- Trevor Noah, the South African host of a popular U.S. TV show, sparred with the French ambassador in Washington after the comedian joked that Africa, not France, won the World Cup. The victory of a multicultural French team against Croatia in Sunday's final in Moscow has reverberated across the globe, being celebrated in France and other places as a triumph for diversity, while it has fanned racist abuse in some corners. "Africa won the World Cup," Noah, host of The Daily Show, said in a segment on the late-night television programme this week. "I get it, they have to say it's the French team. But look at those guys. You don't get that tan by hanging out in the south of France, my friends." Fifteen of the 23-man French World Cup squad have family origins in Africa ranging from Cameroon to Congo and Mali, although only two of them were born in Africa and moved to France when they were still toddlers. Noah's comment provoked angry comments in France -- where far-right politicians have long criticised the national team for having too many black players -- and a rebuke from the French ambassador to the United States, Gerard Araud. "By calling them an African team, it seems you are denying their Frenchness. This, even in jest, legitimizes the ideology which claims whiteness as the only definition of being French," Araud wrote in a letter posted on the French embassy's Twitter account. On Wednesday night, Noah fired back at the diplomat. "When I'm saying 'African' I'm not saying it to exclude them from their Frenchness, I'm saying it to include them in my African-ness," he said, after reading the letter on the show. Former U.S. President Barack Obama had a different take on the French World Cup victory, saying during a tribute to South Africa's Nelson Mandela that embracing diversity delivered "practical benefits." "And if you doubt that, just ask the French football team that just won the World Cup. Because not all of those folks look like Gauls to me. But they're French, they're French," he added.

Politics / ‘300 Non-nigerians Seen Registering To Vote’- INEC Chairman, Mamood Yakubu by damilogogle(m): 2:25pm On Jun 21, 2018 |
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has revealed that more than 300 non-Nigerians have been apprehended for attempting to register for Permanent Voters Card, PVC. Speaking at an election stakeholders’ summit in Abuja, INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, also disclosed that Nigerian Immigration Service has been deployed to arrest any foreigner who tried to register. He also revealed that the commission was working on a draft policy on diaspora voting, even as he said the commission was collaborating with security agencies and formulating administrative procedures to check the incident of vote buying at polling centres. He also noted that 138 political associations had applied for registration as political parties ahead of the 2109 general elections. He said: “As at June 8, 2018, we have received requests from 138 associations to register as political parties to join the already 68 registered political parties. So, we may have more than the 68 registered political parties before the 2019 general elections.” He, however, expressed worries that registering more political parties could have effect on the size of ballot paper, the ballot box and also have implications on the speed of processing the election outcome. On when the ballot papers could be ready, he said: “I am looking at November when we will have the sample of the ballot paper and by that time we would also have known the number of political parties contesting in each constituency.” He said that currently, there were 1,146 registration centres nationwide. On when the voters’ cards would be ready, he said: “We have been processing the cards and we will make sure that citizens collect their PVCs before the 2019 general elections. “Vote buying is a big problem and we have been working with the EFCC and the police on this. We have to look at the administration of voting process by ensuring increased secrecy at the voting point.”

Mohamed Salah has been left out of the starting XI for Egypt's opening World Cup game against Uruguay. A shoulder injury inflicted on him by Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos in the Champions League final put the Liverpool forward's World Cup campaign in doubt, ruling him out of Egypt's pre-tournament friendlies. However, the attacker was declared fit on Thursday by coach Hector Cuper ahead of his country's first World Cup finals appearance for 28 years, but instead takes his place on the bench. Amr Warda is the man who slots into the right wing in Salah's place, joining Abdallah Said, Mahmoud Trezeguet and Marwan Mohsen in attack, while Arsenal man Mohamed Elneny takes a place in midfield alongside Tarek Hamed. Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez, meanwhile, has selected star strikers Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani in the first 11, while Atletico Madrid defenders Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez and ex-Barcelona man Martin Caceres line up in defence. The Uruguayans have not won their opening match of a World Cup finals since 1970, while the African nation have not won any of the four games they have played in the history of the tournament. Egypt XI: El Shenawy; Fathy, Gabr, Hegazy, Abdel Shafi; Hamed, Elneny, Trezeguet, Said; Warda; Mohsen. Politics / ‘why We Can’t Reveal What President Buhari Spent For Treatment Abroad’- CBN by damilogogle(m): 2:55pm On Feb 18, 2018 |
The Central Bank of Nigeria and its Governor, Godwin Emefiele, have argued that it was not within their immediate responsibilities to provide information to Nigerians on the treatment of President Muhammadu Buhari or what it cost the country to keep the presidential aircraft and crew for 103 days at the Stansted Airport in the United Kingdom while President Buhari’s medical treatment lasted. They made this know yesterday while opposing a suit requesting them to provide information on the money spent on President Buhari’s treatment in London, United Kingdom. They stated this in their papers filed before the Federal High Court in Abuja in opposition to the suit marked, FHC/ABJ/CS/1142/2017. The suit was instituted by the Incorporated Trustees of Advocacy for Societal Rights Advancement and Development Initiative led by its Executive Director, Adeolu Oyinlola. ASRADI said in the suit that the CBN and its governor refused to honour its Freedom of Information request contained in its letter of October 19, 2017. But, in their counter affidavit filed on February 13, 2018, the CBN and its governor urged the court to reject the applicant’s prayers and dismiss the suit. They equally urged the court to vacate an earlier ex parte order granting leave to the applicant to apply for “a prerogative order of mandamus” compelling them to provide the information requested. They admitted receiving the October 19, 2017 letter from ASRADI, but forwarded it to the President’s Chief of Staff, who they believed was the proper person to provide the information sought by the applicant. The CBN and its governor accused the applicant of failing to inform the court that they wrote it, informing the group to resort to the President’s Chief of Staff for the information it sought. They stated, “Upon the receipt of the applicant’s application for information, the bank (CBN) transferred the same application to the office of the Chief of Staff to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. “The particular information sought by the applicant related to the overseas medical expenses incurred on the President of Nigeria, General Muhammadu Buhari and the aircraft parking fees at the Stansted Airport in the UK.” The CBN and its governor added that having transferred the applicant’s request to the President’s Chief of Staff in line with the requirement of the Freedom of Information Act, the request should have been made to the President’s Chief of Staff. The plaintiff’s letter had sought information on the amount they released for Buhari’s medical treatment in London and the amount they paid on behalf of the Nigerian government as parking fees for keeping the presidential aircraft and crew in the UK while the President’s treatment lasted. In the suit, with the CBN, its governor and the Attorney General of the Federation as respondents, ASRADI sought a declaration that the respondents’ refusal to provide it with information sought through its letter of October 19, 2017 “amounts to a wrongful denial of information and is a flagrant violation of the provisions of the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act 2011.” It also sought an order compelling the respondents to furnish it with information sought in the letter of October 19, 2017, and a further order, mandating the CBN and its governor to pay the plaintiff N10m in damages “for the wilful refusal of the 1st and 2nd respondents to release information in respect of the applicant’s letter dated October 19, 2017.” In a supporting affidavit, Oyinlola contended that it was within the responsibilities of the CBN and its governor to provide the requested information saying they “are responsible for all foreign currency transactions of the Nigerian government or transactions involving the Federal Government of Nigeria and foreign institutions concerning transfer of money outside the shores of Nigeria.” Oyinlola further stated that in the interest of the Nigerian public, the court should grant his group’s prayers to compel the respondents to declare the requested information because ASRADI was daily inundated with demands from the public to investigate the amount of taxpayers’ money spent on treating the President in London and keeping a presidential aircraft there for 103 days. Justice John Tsoho has adjourned till April 17 for the hearing of the main suit along with any objection filed by any of the respondents. more on https://damilogogle..co.ke/?m=1
