Phones / See The 6 Ways Instagram Is Currently Killing & Affecting Your Mental Health by damilogogle(m): 1:29pm On May 03, 2019
There are certain ways that social media Instagram especially is affecting the mental health of its users daily and indirectly killing them little by little.
These are six of those ways. We want you all to carefully go through this write up, it will help you greatly.

The advent of social media has brought many welcomed and some not so welcomed developments. Social media platforms have revolutionized the way we stay in touch with each other and it has become an integral part of the daily life of many.

While there are many positive roles played by social media, it has many setbacks as recent reports have said that overuse or misuse of social media can have a negative impact on self-esteem and mental health, particularly among younger users.
So how and when might social media use be detrimental to our mental well being?

Addiction

One piece of research posited that tweeting or checking emails may be ‘harder to resist than cigarettes and alcohol’. The more social media use becomes an important part of our daily routine, the more we may become too emotionally and psychologically dependent on it.
Asides that, addiction to social media affects our everyday relationships, sleep hygiene, or our performance at work or in our studies.

The Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) Factor

Getting into the habit of checking social media at any available time may lead to us checking on impulse. This can lead to us never really switching off or taking time to relax.
Many social media users today live in the fear of missing out on an update from a friend or celebrity causing them to constantly check their social media platforms at all available given times.

If you are unable to go online, you feel as if something is missing, as if you are outdated and missing the paycheck but check vividly, what good as Social media brought into your life? Truth be told, you are missing nothing.

Comparing Your Life To That Of Others

One thing that makes social media fun is that we get to have a glimpse into the lives of others and keep up to date with them.
However, being in constant contact with the lives of others can lead to critical comparison leading to feelings to insecurity. We forget that most of what we see on social media platforms are carefully selected and filtered content and we aspire to unrealistic expectations.

You are blessed in your own ways but comparing to that of someone else might make you start feeling less of yourself even when many others are praying to be like you.
Sometimes, you even start praying to be like someone else, someone you might even be better than in real life but because they know how to use Social media better than you, you will think their life is better than yours.

Loneliness

One study has suggested that the more frequently you visit social networking sites the more likely you are to feel socially isolated.
However, like many of the studies exploring the effects of social media on mental health, it is difficult to pinpoint causation.
Once you start feeling lonely, please reduce the way you use Social media before it tells badly on your life.

Cyber Bullying

One major headache of social networking is the issue of cyber or online bullying. 70 percent of young people and 40 percent of adults say that they have experienced some form of cyber-bullying.
The Royal Society for Public Health says that victims of bullying are more likely to experience depression, anxiety and even self-harm.
Some people are attacking you on Social media just to light up their own day but can cause serious damage to your own self if you don’t know how to tackle it.
As a Social media user, you must learn how to ignore negative comments else you might get into serious trouble.

Anxiety and Depression

One study has reported that simultaneous use of multiple social networking sites led users to be more likely to report feelings of anxiety or depression.
Those that already have difficulties with anxiety, problems such as body dysphoric disorder and low self-esteem issues may be compounded by social media.’

You will surely start feeling less of yourself when you let the Social media life and affluence of some people affect you. You start feeling less of yourself so badly that you beccome so desperate just to level up.

Politics / Return Home And Face Security Challenges - PDP To Buhari by damilogogle(m): 1:18pm On May 03, 2019
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) charges President Muhammadu Buhari to end his “private visit” abroad and immediately return home to face the deteriorated security situation in the country.
The Party describes as completely unacceptable for President Buhari to practically abandon his responsibilities, as the Commander-In-Chief, at least for now, to pursue unexplained private matters in foreign lands, while bandits, marauders and insurgents seize our nation; maim, kidnap and kill our citizens with reckless abandon.

President Buhari’s inattention has emboldened insurgents and bandits to continue to over-run communities, unleash mayhem and bloodletting on citizens in Borno, Zamfara, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe Taraba, Kaduna, Benue, Kogi and other states of the federation, including Mr. President’s home state, Katsina.

While President Buhari wanders abroad, bandits are having a field day, pillaging communities in Katsina state; killing several persons and abducting the District Head of his hometown, Daura, Musa Umar; the father-in-law of Mr. President’s security aide.
Within this period, marauders invaded communities in Adamawa and killed no fewer that 26 innocent Nigerians; many more have been killed in Borno, Taraba, Benue, and Zamfara states, where bandits also reportedly attacked Government Girls Secondary School Moriki, and kidnapped some school girls.
While the Buhari administration remains virtually nonchalant, kidnappers have taken over many of our major highways, with hundreds of compatriots held in captivity in forests along Kaduna-Abuja, Taraba-Katsina-Ala and other highways in the country.

It is clear that President Buhari has not demonstrated the required capacity to control the security situation and now resorts to cheap escapism, particularly in the face of allegations in the public space that certain individuals around his administration are benefitting from the situation.
This is in addition to allegations that some of the bandits arrested, in states such as Katsina, are not Nigerians but aliens allegedly imported by the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Niger Republic to assist it in unleashing violence and rigging the 2019 general elections.

The PDP urges the police to investigate these alleged links. The fact remains that President Buhari has completely failed our nation. In fact, his dereliction to duty is a clear signal that he has been practically overwhelmed, deflated and has nothing to offer.

The situation in Nigeria today signposts the terrible condition our nation will face if the Presidential mandate is not retrieved at the tribunal to enable competent and uncompromised hands to run the affairs of our country.

The PDP, therefore, calls on President Buhari to immediately return home and use the remaining part of his tenure to seek help instead of wandering abroad under the guise of private visits

Nairaland / General / Stop Searching People’ S Phones, It Is Unethical - Kwara Police Commissioner. by damilogogle(m): 1:11pm On May 03, 2019
The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has warned officers in the command against searching people’s phones. While addressing the officers at the command headquarters in Ilorin yesterday Thursday, May 2nd, the police boss said it was unethical for officers to search people’s phone.
He noted that most officers search phones with the intent to extort and that extortion is a criminal offense and will attract a stiff penalty.“It’s unethical to seize and start searching anybody’s mobile phone on the road.

The practice of searching the phone of an individual on the road for evidence of internet fraud amounts to conducting a roadside investigation,” he started speaking further, he said“In some of these cases, the young men mostly university undergraduates are made to part with a little or as much as N2,000 for their releases or the release of their phones.

The Command frowns at this ugly trend and will stop at nothing in identifying and dealing with culprits of these acts. It becomes a criminal offence if that (search) intends in extortion or done with an intent to extort.

All policemen in this command, especially patrolmen are constantly being reminded that extortion while bearing firearms completes the ingredients of the offence of armed robbery.“Henceforth, any policeman found to be engaging in any form of extortion while armed on the highway will be arrested, detained, tried and if found guilty, dismissed and charged with armed robbery,” he said.

Nairaland / General / Buhari Can Order Army To Produce His Certificates If They Exist – Atiku by damilogogle(m): 12:04pm On May 02, 2019
Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the PDP Presidential candidate in 2019 election who reacted to claims by President Muhammadu Buhari that his academic certificates are with the Nigerian Army, has stated that he can order the army to produce them if they exist.

Atiku who countered the response Buhari gave to their petition filed before the Election Petitions Tribunal, said if it was true that the certificates existed, Buhari as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces could order the army to produce them.

The PDP Presidential candidate who said he attached his academic certificates to the Form CF001 he submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission, had urged the tribunal to declare them the authentic winner of the February 23 presidential election, insisting Buhari did not possess the educational qualifications he claimed to have in his INEC Form CF001.

The petitioners also stated that “the purported training and courses”, which Buhari claimed placed him “head and shoulders above” Atiku regarding educational qualifications to contest the presidential election, “did not culminate in the issuance of any certificates he claimed in his INEC Form CF001”. They also described Buhari’s claim of being head and shoulders above Atiku as “erroneous”.

Nairaland / General / I Can Choose Anybody To Head Computer Village Market – Tinubu Ojo by damilogogle(m): 11:58am On May 02, 2019
The leader of traders in Lagos and the Iyaloja General of Nigeria, Mrs Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, has said that some traders in the Computer village market who protested against the appointment of Iyaloja and Babaloja in the market on Tuesday were ill-informed.

Addressing a press briefing on Wednesday, Tinubu-Ojo, said all the markets in the state were under her control and the computer village market cannot be an exception.
According to our constitution, I can choose anybody from any local government in the state to head the market, all the iyaloja and babaloja in all the Lagos markets are my representatives in the market where they operate. Kindly educate them that phones, handsets, computers are commodities.
“They cannot tell us they are not pepper sellers, everybody cannot be textile dealers; they can’t tell us that computer village will be exonerated from other markets. We have the right to choose for them Iyaloja and Babaloja.”

“Those people protesting never approached me to complain. They don’t have the initiative that the person leading the protest has finished his tenure and wants to remain in power.”
“Computer village is not just an ICT hub, there are a lot of commodities being sold there; nobody can say it is wrong to select a babaloja and iyaloja for the market. Those that have been selected were not selected because they are Yoruba, in some of our markets in Lagos we have Igbos that were selected as market leaders,” Tinubu-Ojo said.

She said the appointment of Mrs Abisola Azeez and Mr Adeniyi Babalola, as Iyaloja and Babaloja of Computer Village respectively was done to maintain peace in the market among the traders.

Politics / Fani-Kayode Reacts To APC Claims That Atiku Is Not A Nigerian by damilogogle(m): 3:31pm On Apr 13, 2019
Femi Fani-Kayode has reacted to the claim by the ruling All Progressives Congress that the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, is not a Nigerian.

The APC had yesterday filed a motion at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja.
The Party, in the petition filed by its lead counsel, Lateef Fagbemi faulted the candidacy of Atiku in the election, claiming that Atiku is a Cameroonian and not a Nigerian citizen.
APC, hence stated that the former Vice President petition against President Muhammadu Buhari, its own candidate, should be dismissed for lacking in merit.

Reacting , Fani-Kayode on his Twitter page queried why a ‘non-Nigerian’ will accuse Atiku of being a foreigner.
According to him, this new claim by APC has proved a point that Nigeria is a Zoo.

The former minister wrote: “When a non-Nigerian accuses a bona fide Nigerian of being a foreigner you begin to appreciate why those that have insisted on calling Nigeria a zoo may have a point.
“It is only in Nigeria that a man whose father was from Niger Republic can accuse others of being foreigners!”

Politics / Ortom Defected Because I Told Him The Truth About Herdsmen - Buhari by damilogogle(m): 12:06am On Apr 11, 2019
President Muhammadu Buhari has said that one of the reasons Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom left the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC) for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) was because he could not stomach what he (Buhari) explained to him on the farmers/herders clashes in his state.

Buhari said that he explained to Ortom that the cattle rearers and settlers problem in Nigeria was older than himself (Buhari) not to talk of him (Ortom).
Buhari said “But those of you who are neighbours to cattle rearers, Nigerians cattle rearers use to carry only sticks and their machetes to cut foliage for the cattles. But these are cattle rearers with weapons like AK47.

“But the problem is that you can hardly identify the difference between cattle rearers from Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria Chad, Cameroon and other cattle herders. They look the same but I was accused of not doing anything about those operating locally but I took the governor on this and this is one of the reasons he left our party for another party.

“Because I told him the cattle rearers and settlers problem in Nigeria is older than myself not to talk of him and at first republic, there were cattle routes, they put infrastructures and even veterinary.

“But the so-called politicians because they are so much in a hurry to make money they acquire some of these lands and turned them into their private farms.
“So, if you are a cattle rearer or you know about cattle like myself, the herders now pass through anybody land to find water for their cattles to drink.
I told Audu Ogbeh, the minister of agriculture to look at the Gazette of the first republic to get the cattle routes and get the grazing routes and re-establish them so that we can reduce this incidence. Some of you here know the efforts we are making.” he added

Nairaland / General / Dollar May Trade At N500 Soon – Dino Melaye by damilogogle(m): 11:55pm On Mar 13, 2019
The Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial district, Dino Melaye, has said that dollar may soon trade at N5 if the right measures are not put in place with the 219 appropriation bill.
Dino made this known during the plenary session today, March 13th, while contributing to a debate on the N8.83 trillion budget.
He went on to say that the Budget is chaos as it does not have any plan for the poor.

In His Own Word;
The appropriation is unrealistic by many indications.
This budget is one Nigerians should be ‘sorry about’ as it does not bear any plan for the poor.
“We have to look at the state of the economy and provisions of the budget there in. Federal Government spent $41 billion to cushion and stabilise the naira. How long can we continue to live in sin and grace continue to abound?
“We do not have any reserve to continue devaluation of naira. Oil price has dropped to 5 from 6 (dollars per barrel). This is very significant and makes the projection of the 219 budget unrealistic.

“There is a drop in Internally Generated Revenue and the revenue of customs. Federal government has no money to subsidise fuel. In the midst of this calamitous situation, how do we now finance the 219 budget? Are we going to fund the budget based on daily contribution? Are we going borrow again? These are questions begging for answer. I want to announce to Nigerians, despite the hypocrisy of the federal government, despite the lies, I prophecy to you that the federal government will soon deregulate. Inflation is on the rise, unemployment in on the increase, yet we have a budget that has nothing for the poor masses of this country,”

“There is no longer foreign investments. I announce to you that with all these indices and yard sticks, by the end of May, except there is a miracle, dollar will rise to N5 to 1 dollar. Because we have depleted our foreign reserve. We are a borrowing nation.”

Accredited Voters: 1,428,895
APC: 1,044,710
PDP: 815,168

Total - 1,858,875.

Now, from the above, void votes are not recorded, the votes of the minor parties are not recorded yet, INEC has a super rising figure above the accredited votes after the end of the election.

Buharig only came to steal, to kill and to destroy.

Nothing is more corrupt than rigging of elections and no man is more corrupt than being a rigger. Buharig is too corrupt.

Events / 5 Days To Go, Can Davido Still Fill Up The O2? by damilogogle(m): 12:42am On Jan 25, 2019
A year ago, Wizkid became the first African to headline a concert at one of the largest and most prestigious venues in the UK, The O2Arena .
While several world superstars have had the chance to headline a show at the arena, 2018 was the year WizKid broke the record for Africans. Pacesetter level
In 2019, Davido is seeking to achieve the same feat. He has called up the acts associated with his label imprint, Mayorkun , Dremo , Idowest and others as supporting acts for the big day.
But question is
Will He Fill Up The 02?

One key ingredient of a successful show is when the event is tagged a “ Sold Out Show ” meaning the artiste has pulled all resources in ensuring people turn up for his show and to a large extent, it is a thing of popularity and fame for such artiste.
Looking at the ticket website for the Davido’s concert on Sunday, hundreds of seats are still left unsold and smirks concerns if there will be a full house at O2 Arena on Sunday.
Davido has been that confident artiste who always want to get things done. Perhaps the reason he wanted a bigger venue than the smaller O2 Brixton he sold out last year.
With time ticking away fast, and just 5 days to the event
Will Davido Sell Out The O2 Arena To Join The Likes Of Wizkid, Drake, Beyonce, Rihanna?

Crime / Court Can’t Compel Us To Prosecute Fani-kayode, Others For Kanu’s Escape - DSS by damilogogle(m): 6:27pm On Dec 01, 2018
The Department of State Service (DSS) and its Director-General, Yusuf Bichi, have said they cannot be compelled by the Federal High Court in Abuja to prosecute those accused of aiding the escape of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, from Nigeria, PUNCH reports.

They stated that not even the President of Nigeria could tell them how to contain national security threats.

They stated these in their notice of preliminary objection which they filed in response to a suit seeking an order of mandamus to compel them and the police to arrest and prosecute some named individuals, including a former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, for alleged culpability in the escape of Kanu who reportedly surfaced in Israel recently.
Others proposed for prosecution also include those who stood sureties for the bail granted Kanu by the Federal High Court in Abuja in April last year – Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe, Tochukwu Uchendu and Emmanuel Shallom Ben.
Also listed for the proposed prosecution are Kanu’s lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor and the IPOB leader’s relatives – Emmanuel Kanu and Uchechi Kanu.
The rest, according to the plaintiff, are “all those who worked together to propagate and spread the inciting lies and falsehood that Nnamdi Kanu was abducted, arrested, kidnapped, detained, killed and assassinated by the Nigerian Army when indeed they were well aware of his whereabouts because they played roles in helping Nnamdi Kanu to disappear from Nigeria.”

The suit was filed by Isiah Ayugu, who described himself as a tax-paying, responsible Nigerian and lawyer.
He joined the DSS, its Director-General, Yusuf Bichi, the police and the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, as the defendants.
But the named individuals have filed various applications seeking to be joined as additional defendants in the suit.

Justice John Tsoho had on November 22 fixed January 11 for the hearing of the various joinder applications.
On November 9, 2018, Justice John Tsoho granted leave to the plaintiff to proceed with the suit and serve same on the respondents.
He said in the suit marked, FHC/ABJ/CS/1254/18, that due to Kanu’s escape from Nigeria, the IPOB leader’s trial on charges of treasonable felony had remained stalled before Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
He said as a Nigerian, his image had been damaged “by the character assassination, lies, falsehood, evil propaganda made against the Nigerian Army that the Nigerian Army has abducted, arrested, kidnapped, assassinated and killed Nnamdi Kanu.”

But responding through a notice of preliminary objection filed on November 23, the DSS and its Director-General, asked the court to strike it out on among other grounds that the court lacked the jurisdiction to hear the case and that the court lacked the power to mandate the doing of a discretionary act.

They also contended that the plaintiff lacked the locus standi (the legal right) to initiate the suit.
According to them, containing national security threat is a matter of discretion which the court and even the President of Nigeria cannot interfere with.

They added that the DSS “must act within the latitude of available resources” and as such they would only allocate resources to investigate matters “based on the situation on ground.”

Further hearing in the suit has been adjourned till January 9.

Politics / Re: Buhari,Atiku Not Educated Enough To Rule Nigeria,Says Olawepo-Hashim by damilogogle(m): 2:05am On Nov 26, 2018
Early life

Atiku Abubakar was born on November 25, 1946 to a Fulani trader and farmer Garba Abubakar, and his second wife, Aisha Kande, in Jada village of Adamawa State. Atiku Abubakar became the only child of his parents when his only sister died at infancy. Atiku’s father and mother divorced before his father died in 1957 and his mother remarried. Eventually, his mother died in 1984 of heart attack. Atiku Abubakar could not start school when he ought to because his father was opposed to him obtaining western education. When his not going to school was noticed, his father was arrested and jailed until he paid a fine.

Consequently, Atiku Abubakar got registered into Jada Primary School at the age of eight. After his primary school, Atiku was admitted into Adamawa Provincial Secondary School Yola in the year 1960. He later finished his secondary school in 1965 after he made grade three in the West African School Certificate Examination.

Atiku Abubakar then proceeded to Nigerian Police College, Kaduna. He left the college for a position as tax officer in the Regional Ministry of Finance. Later he got admission to study at the School of Hygiene Kano in 1966. In 1967, he graduated with a Diploma. That same year, Atiku Abubakar was admitted for a Law Diploma at Ahmadu Bello University on a scholarship. He graduated in 1969 and got employed by Nigeria Customs Service that same year.

Education

Like many of his generation, Abubakar's father was opposed to the idea of Western education, and tried to keep Abubakar out of the traditional school system. When the government discovered that Abubakar was not attending mandatory schooling, his father spent a few days in jail until Aisha Kande's mother paid the fine At the age of eight Abubakar enrolled in the Jada Primary School. In 1960, he was admitted to Adamawa Provincial Secondary School in Yola where he did well in English Language and Literature, struggled with Physics and Chemistry and Mathematics. He graduated with a Grade Three WASSCE/GCE Certificate in 1965.

Following secondary school, Abubakar studied a short while at the Nigeria Police College in
Kaduna . He left the College when he was unable to present an O-Level Mathematics result.
He worked briefly as a Tax Officer in the regional Ministry of Finance, from where he gained admission to the school of Hygiene in
Kano in 1966. He graduated with a Diploma in 1967, having served as Interim Student Union President at the school. In 1967 he enrolled for a Law Diploma at the Ahmadu Bello University Institute of Administration, on a scholarship from regional government. After graduation in 1969, during the Nigerian Civil War , he was employed by the Nigeria Customs Service .

https://damilogogle..com/2018/11/meet-most-dangerous-man-in-world.html

With his unkempt beard, an obsession with the mystical and the occult, and a powerful hold over Russia’s autocratic leader, it isn’t hard to see why Aleksandr Dugin is likened to a modern-day Rasputin.

The ultra-nationalist, ultra-conservative philosopher has a considerable profile in Russia, where he is known as ‘Putin’s brain’, his writings and utterances providing an ideological veneer for the president’s cynical power plays.
Beyond his country’s borders, he has been a less familiar figure – but that is now beginning to change, both as Vladimir Putin’s actions become increasingly reckless, and as Dugin himself becomes a guru for far-right activists in the West.

Of course, his distinctive appearance, and unmistakable likeness to the ‘Mad Monk’ who bewitched the family of Russia’s last Tsar, have helped considerably in this. Dugin is, though, far from being ‘Russia’s greatest love machine’. Born in 1962, he is in a long-standing, apparently stable marriage to fellow philosophy graduate Natalia Melentyeva and has two children.

Rather than copying his dissolute lifestyle, Dugin’s most dangerous replication of Rasputin is in manoeuvring himself into a position of great influence over an authoritarian ruler, while avoiding any direct accountability.

Some observers, such as the Russian journalist, Alexander Nevzorov, and professor Marlene Laruelle of George Washington University, believe that Dugin’s sway over Putin is overstated. They note the absence of any apparent personal friendship between the two men. Nor is Dugin a known party to the dubious, shared financial interests that are a hallmark of Putin’s inner circle.

But Dugin is heavily promoted by the Kremlin-controlled Russian media and has strong ties to the military. He lectured for many years at the Russian Military Staff Academy, where his writings apparently remain a core part of the curriculum.

Most of all, the connection between Dugin’s thoughts and Putin’s actions is too great to be mere coincidence.

Dugin and Putin’s views are rabidly anti-Western, anti-liberal, totalitarian and socially backward, with an oddly obsessive focus on homosexuality. Both are fervent proponents of expanding Russia’s power in pursuit of these ideas. They exult in the use of underhand methods or military force to do so.

Their common worldview appears to stem from a shared background as children of the Soviet system. When the USSR collapsed, both felt the sudden loss of empire and personal status acutely.

Putin was famously a mid-ranking KGB officer who was forced to return home from East Germany broke, jobless and with his pride badly dented. Dugin’s father was a colonel-general in Soviet military intelligence. While Dugin was already exploring fascism and questioning communism before the Eastern Bloc disintegrated, he nonetheless mourned the loss of Russian power.

The Russian president’s repeated recent aggression is partly the product of his ultra-cynical pragmatism. These actions create a crucial diversion from the domestic repression, corruption and economic failings of his rule. This helps Putin to hold on to the power upon which his personal security and assets depend.

But Dugin’s rise to prominence has proceeded in lockstep with Putin’s growing nationalism and there is little doubt that Putin’s behaviour is strongly influenced by Dugin’s ideas.

Rather than being original, Dugin’s ‘Eurasianist’ ideology is mostly a hotch-potch of earlier anti-Bolshevik, Italian fascist and German Nazi thoughts, adapted to Russia’s current circumstances.

As Charles Clover wrote in Black Wind, White Snow: The Rise of Russia’s New Nationalism, the original Eurasianism stemmed from the ideas of turn of the 20th century academics like Sir Halfold Mackinder, who saw geography as the most important factor in world politics. This pitted Russia, with its enormous Steppe lands and harsh winters, against the preeminent sea powers such as Britain and, later, the United States.

Exiled Russian anti-Bolshevik writers such as Nikolai Trubetzkoy expanded on this notion in the 1920s in books like Exodus to the East. They argued that Russia’s exposed geography and vastness mean its rulers have no choice but to focus on securing its territory. This situation compels them to think imperially, consuming and assimilating dangerous populations on every border.

Dugin has reinterpreted these ideas in publications such as The War of the Continents and The Foundations of Geopolitics to prophesise an inevitable conflict between the land power (Russia-led Eurasia) and the sea power (the US-led West). This conflict will continue until one side is destroyed completely. (Spoiler alert: he is convinced the liberal West will be the loser).

Dugin has grafted traditional ultra-conservative Russian beliefs on to these disturbing geopolitical ideas. Russia, he claims, is a unique civilisation based on hard-line Orthodox religiosity and a powerful, authoritarian state. The country has a messianic mission to lead the fight against the alien Western doctrine of rationalism.

Contrary to the original Eurasianists who were largely anti-Nazi, Dugin has incorporated fascist ideas into his prospectus. He is a devotee of the 1930s pro-Nazi writings of German philosopher, Martin Heidegger, amongst other more unequivocally extremist thinkers of the inter-war era. Dugin’s resulting ideology replicates the Nazis by prizing blood and soil ethnic mysticism and personal submission to authority over the rule of law and individual freedom.

While Dugin has modified his anti-Semitism in recognition of Putin’s increasingly close relationship with Israel’s right-wing Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, his admiration for aspects of Nazism remains open. He has praised the Waffen-SS as “an intellectual oasis in the framework of the National Socialist regime”.

Dugin has also parted company with his Eurasianist predecessors by vastly expanding, with little attempt at justification, the area he believes should be subjected to Russian dominance. Rather than restricting it to, roughly, the territory of the former Soviet Union, he arbitrarily incorporates most of Europe, China and Mongolia, and recommends turning south towards the Indian Ocean.

The influence of Dugin’s ideas on Putin’s domestic policies can be clearly seen in the Russian president’s growing authoritarianism and increasing focus on co-opting the Russian Orthodox church over recent years. This includes moral crusades against supposed Western infections such as homosexuality and the degeneracy of artists and campaigners like the feminist Pussy Riot collective.

Externally, Dugin’s impact can be seen in Putin’s creation of the Eurasian Economic Union, which several former Soviet nations have been coerced into joining, and the more nakedly aggressive invasion of Ukraine.

In the latter case, Dugin is so confident of his position in Putin’s orbit that he has ventured some mild criticism, exhorting his president to go further and seize more of Ukraine. According to Dugin, but not the vast majority of Ukrainians, Ukraine “welcomes Russia, waits for it, pleads for Russia to come”.

Dugin’s influence on Putin is further evidenced by the Kremlin’s extensive support for fascist and other right-wing extremist parties across the West. The Russian regime regularly deploys Dugin to represent it in meetings with far-right visitors from Europe, such as Italian interior minister Matteo Salvini and Gábor Vona of Hungary’s Jobbik neo-fascists.

Dugin’s long-standing cultivation of western extremists has been widely reciprocated. He has become a cult figure for many of them, including former KKK leader David Duke. A younger American white-supremacist acolyte, Richard Spencer, even married Dugin’s English translator and promoter in the US, Nina Kouprianova.

Perhaps Dugin’s most dangerous Western admirer of all is Steve Bannon, who has regularly expressed his support for Dugin’s Eurasianist ideology. The president that Bannon helped place in the White House, Donald Trump, is actively engaged in fulfilling Dugin and Putin’s agenda by weakening Western alliances such as NATO and aligning the US with pro-Kremlin, right-wing fanatics around the world.

Professing patriotism while favouring the interests of a self-proclaimed enemy state over those of your own country is an integral part of the incoherence of far-right nationalism.

Alexander Dugin is peddling a rehashed version of the fascist ideology that once led the world into catastrophe. But the substantial influence Dugin exerts over ultra-powerful people like Putin and, indirectly, Trump, makes him a frightening figure.

Rasputin
A society figure, Rasputin met the Russian ruler Nicholas II in 1905.
The following year he began acting as a healer for the Tsar’s son, who suffered from hemophilia. He was a divisive figure at court and became increasingly unpopular, during the First World War, as his influence grew and the nation’s theneweuropean.co.ukfell.
