Crime / Photos: UNIABUJA Undergraduate Allegedly Attempts To Rape Female Student by Damilola929(m): 9:19pm On Sep 25, 2016
Actress Dorothy Njemanze shared this story last week on her Facebook wall. Read below

I was busy with school runs in Gwagwalada when I got a frantic call reporting the attempted rape of a first year University of Abuja(UniAbuja) student by another first year student of Biological Sciences called Monday. By the time I got there, the Chief Security Officer was just beginning to interview both parties, starting from the boy, Monday.

He told of how he made his 'intentions' known to her and she said she would 'think about it' but he according to him, he didn't understand why shy couldn't give a straight answer, so he began making moves at 'romancing' her and feigns ignorance of her claims that from the moment he started, she told him to stop. He claims he only noticed her seriousness 'when he crossed the boundary'. He is upset that he had sent her 400 naira recharge card before and doesn't get why she will reject him.

The young lady insists she came by at all because he said he was not well. By the time she got in, he was playing loud music, so from the moment he began trying to have sex, she was shouting but the loud music drowned her voice. She insists he pinned her to the mattress and she tried strangling him with his necklace till it cut. After that, she reached for the laptop as a weapon and ripping it out turned off all the music then he released her because she could now be heard. She ran out and called for help. She got help and retrieved her phone and slippers and purse. Then she began reporting to their mutual friends and people she trusts. She insisted she injured him to. On demand, he took off his shirt and everyone saw injuries she gave him and more.

I got upset that the attitude towards gathering evidence is zero. There seemed to be a majority notion that as long as there was eventually no penetration, it is not so grievous a crime. All I insisted was to document all that could be seen as evidence before any statements are taken etc.
I applaud the lady for speaking up. We need ensure the students and security men understand sexual harassment in its entirety and be sure whatever responses are in place take into cognizance victim needs.

I was very agitated when it seemed people were upset that 'she was trying to make a lot out of something very small.
More people need to understand what sexual violence is and legal provisions for victims and offenders.
More details tomorrow. These pictures were finally taken at the crime scene. More shocking experiences tomorrow morning.

Many are trying to use victim blaming and shaming to force her to drop the case. Please, let us change the narrative and share this widely to punish the perpetrator, not the victim. ...Ambassador Dorothy Njemanze

Politics / See Where We Need You, Lagos Residents Tell Ambode by Damilola929(m): 2:12am On Sep 24, 2016
By Bose Adelaja, Ebun Sessou, Damilola Olabiyisi & Obinna Mbajunwa

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State is daily winning the hearts of many residents. No week passes without the commissioning one project or the other.

Road construction appears his major focus although other sectors are also receiving attention. The first phase has the government commissioning 114 roads across the length and breadth of the state. The second phase will commence soon. Ambode stands out among the governors. His performance speaks for him.

In spite of this, a walk round Lagos reveals that many major roads require urgent attention to ease off traffic jam in those areas.

Some of the roads have turned death traps. Hoodlums rob and dispossess innocent road users of their belongings on these bad spots.

The 114 roads were designed with walkways, medians, street lights and standard drainage systems in readiness for the building of the mega city.

However, some scenes may not be pleasant to a first time visitor during the rainy season.

In Apapa, some of the roads begging for attention are Airways junction, Eleganza to Flourmill, in Ikorodu, places like Isawo road, Igbo-Olomu, Ijede road,
Ebute/Igbogbo road, Bayeku road, Igbe road, Erunwen road and Bola Ahmed Tinubu Way, Igbogbo require government attention before the next wet season.

In Mende, Maryland, areas like Arowojobe, Soluyi and several others are deplorable due to years of neglect by by the past administrations.
At Soluyi, Gbagada, residents complain about poor state of access roads to their community.

A walk round the area reveals there are about four roads in the community to connect Ogudu, Maryland, and Ifako areas, but the routes are inaccessible to vehicles and some of the residents have to park their cars and trek a long distance to their various homes. They are left with the option to access the only road near Gbagada General Hospital which is far for many of them.

In Mushin, places like Daleko, Ojuwoye, Oju-Erin, Olosa, Moshalashi, Palm Avenue, Idi-Araba and many others are also begging for attention while in Surulere, Lawanson, Itire Ijesha and so many others require reconstruction and rehabilitation.

Others are Ayetoro/Itele road, Ekoro road, Meiran road, Suberu-Oje road, Kollington/Agbado road and Ajegunle/Abule-Iroko road all in Alimosho area which have turned to death traps.
In Apapa, residents claimed the Airways junction was formerly rehabilitated by a Good Samaritan who was later discouraged and the road is now out of use to motorists.

During Saturday Vanguard’s visit to the area, residents lamented the deplorable condition of the road which has affected a lot of businesses.

Same is the case with Lekki-Epe where road users groan daily because of the near collapse of some roads. A commercial bus driver Obi Chukwu, lamented the poor condition of the roads, he said, “The effect of bad roads in Lagos can be frustrating, not only does it cause untold hardship to many road users but also exposes them to danger and insecurity,”

Narrating her experience, a car owner Uju Nwokedi told Saturday Vanguardhow she was attacked by hoodlums on her way home last week.

According to her, “there was traffic jam on Lekki/Epe expressway and I decided to use the alternative route but barely five minutes into the Ikota First Gate route to burst out to Ilaje, I was attacked by some hoodlums who collected my phones, laptops and cash.”

At Mushin/Isolo road, a commercial driver, Kazeem Fatai narrated how he ventured into the business in 2010, unfortunately, the effect of bad road is already taken its toll on him.

In Igbogbo, Ikorodu, the immediate past administration started a road project on Igbogbo/Ebute road but this was done half way leaving road users to die in silence due to the dilapidated road network.

A resident of Abigail Sobajo street James Ogunyemi urged the state government to look into their plight by fixing the road.

A pupil of AUD Primary School, Igbogbo, Lukman Oduniyi said ‘’this is the only road leading to my school but we have been finding it difficult to access it especially at peak hours because some commercial motorcycles charge astronomically due to the poor condition of the road,”
During a visit to Apapa, it was observed that the Airways junction and Flourmill areas have been washed off by rains.

The Sole Administrator of Oshodi/Isolo local government, Adebayo Taiwo said the re-construction of some streets in Oshodi which include Ogunlana and Boladale among others can only commence later.

Reacting to the development, the Chairman House Committee on Works and Infrastructure, Abiodun Tobun, said the state government was trying its best to ensure that roads in Lagos are in good shape.

He disclosed that, apart from the 114 roads that are being commissioned by the state government, the representatives of all the local councils have been asked to submit the list of bad roads in their communities to begin the second phase of road construction.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said 30 political parties had submitted names of their candidates for the Nov. 26 governorship election in Ondo state. The commission’s Deputy Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Mr Nick Dazang, disclosed this in an interview with newsmen.

Dazang said that all the parties met the Thursday deadline for the submission of names of the candidate as specified by the Electoral Act. He said that the names of the candidates could not be announced until the date specified by the Electoral Act, as they were still subject to change.

“As at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 22, 30 political parties have submitted the list of their candidates for the Ondo governorship election. “The parties can also substitute these names between now and Oct. 27, that is one month to the election when we will published the final list.

“At that point when we published the list, they cannot withdraw or substitute any longer,’’ he explained. Dazang also told newsmen that the National Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff’s faction submitted names of candidates for the election.
He said that the commission was yet to decide on which of the two candidates, Mr Eyitayo Jegede or Mr Jimoh Ibrahim, that was acceptable to it. Jegede emerged from the primary election organized National Caretaker Committee, while Ibrahim is the candidate of the Sheriff-led faction.

Former Chairman of the Appropriations Committee, Abdulmumin Jibrin, stuck to his guns and failed to show up at the House of Representatives Committee on Ethics and Privileges meeting, which commenced its investigative hearing into the allegations levelled him Friday morning.

The Chairman of the Committee, Nicholas Ossai, is presiding over the session, but Jibrin is not present at the hearing.

This comes barely 48 hours after the House mandated the Ethics committee to probe allegations of misconduct against the former Appropriations Committee chairman, who also vowed during the rowdy House session, where the decision was taken, that he would not attend the hearing.

Crime / Ex-b’haram Spokesman, Konduga, Undergoing Psychiatric Test by Damilola929(m): 7:33am On Sep 20, 2016
The Borno Police Command said on Monday September 19, that it had placed the former spokesman for the Boko Haram sect, Ali Konduga, under psychiatric investigation.

This, the police said, followed Konduga’s display of abnormal behaviour since his arrest last week.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the spokesman for the command, Mr. Victor Isuku, said this in a statement he issued in Maiduguri.

Isuku said that Konduga was arrested after a complaint by one Muhammadu Kala.

“On September 14, one Muhammadu Kala lodged a complaint at the GRA Police Station, Maiduguri, that Mallam Ali Konduga of Gwange ward had trespassed on the premises of the house of Senator Muhammed Ndume.

“The DPO led a team of policemen to arrest the trespasser where he had gone to receive treatment for injuries he sustained as a result of a mob action,” Isuku said.

The police spokesman said that investigation, however, revealed that the suspect was of unsound mind.

“On investigation, he was behaving abnormally and was not responding rationally to questions put to him, a situation that suggests that he is of unsound mind.
“Hence, he was taken to the Federal Neuro Psychiatric Centre, Maidguri, to ascertain his sanity.

“Meanwhile, the suspect is still under observation at the hospital,’’ he said.
Isuku, who said the suspect was sentenced to three years imprisonment for complicity in Boko Haram activities, added that the police had commenced investigations into his case and would take necessary action once he was discharged.

Politics / PDP Governors Plan To Float New Party by Damilola929(m): 11:25am On Sep 19, 2016
As the frosty relationship in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) becomes endless, there are plans by the governors on the platform to dump the party for Ali Modu Sheriff, according to a report by Breaking Times. The governors are planning to set up a new party ahead of 2019 when the country is expected to hold a general election.

The governors are believed to be wooing some other stakeholders in the party as well as politicians from across the country. The leadership crisis in the party has lingered since it lost the 2015 general elections. The governors settled for Sheriff.

However, the crisis persisted especially when the governors turned their backs on the former governor of Borno state with allegations that he is linked to the Boko Haram terrorism or that he has a plan to corner the party in favour of his presidential ambition in 2019.

An attempt to oust him has resulted various court cases for and against the governors and the party. Efforts by the Ahmed Makarfi committee to resolve the crisis has proven abortive so far.

The report said though, the meeting to reconcile the warring factions of the party was ongoing, the governors may have adopted forming a new party as a better option to the crisis. It also said the Sheriff faction is aware of this plan by the governors and is threatening to legally stop it.

According to its quoted source, “If the governors should try it, they will have serious issues to contend with in court. We will take them to court.” Meanwhile, former Governor Gbenga Daniel of Ogun state has advised the two warring factions of the party to work together, adding that the road to victory does not have diversion.

Politics / US To Return Abacha Loot, Dismisses Case Filed By Nnaka by Damilola929(m): 9:30pm On Sep 18, 2016
– The United States has dismissed a suit by Godson Nnaka asking for $550 million of the Abacha loot

– The US-based Nigerian lawyer had argued that he was entitled to the share of the money after the Nigerian government had recruited him to get the money

– The court ruled that the lawyer was not entitled to the money has his temporary letter was not renewed

The US is set to repatriate over $550 million of stolen funds during the regime of late General Sani Abacha after a case instigated by a Nigerian lawyer was dismissed. Vanguard reports that a US-based Nigerian lawyer, Godson Nnaka, had requested for $320 million from the Abacha loot from Nigeria.

Justice John D. Bates of the U.S District Court had dismissed Nnaka’s claim and insisted that he was not a party to the forfeiture case filed by the US Department of Justice in conjunction with Nigeria.

The office of the Attorney General of the Federation had filed an opposition to Nnaka’s motion for the payment and asked the court to bar him from filling similar cases.

Justice Bates said that Nnaka did not meet the basic prerequisites to be considered as a proper party in the case and to be paid the amount he requested for as he was not qualified to represent Nigeria. The judge also ruled out Nnaka for the payment since he had not won any judgment for Nigeria. “Neither Nnaka nor his purported clients are parties to the forfeiture matter and neither of them can win judgment through this litigation.

“The conclusion dooms Nnaka’s motion for charging lien. At common law, the charging of lien is applicable to a judgment or decree obtained for a client by an attorney. Until a judgment or decree has been obtained, the right to impose a lien does not arise.

“Even the most basic prerequisites for charging lien are missing here: Nnaka has not won a judgment for Nigeria; indeed, he had not successfully entered appearance on Nigeria’s behalf. A charging lien in the amount of $320 million is not called for. Nnaka’s claim against Nigeria must be pursued in another case: 16cv-1400.

“Unless and until Nnaka’s claim to the defendant’s assets are reinstated by the DC Circuit, Nnaka’s participation in this case must now come to an end,” the U.S judge ruled, paving the way for Nigeria to draw down its huge cash.

Abubakar Malami who is the minister of justice was in the US for the judgement said Nnaka was merely trying to delay the return of the Abacha loot by the U.S by making a claim that Nigeria must pay him 40 percent of the loot.

The minister noted that although Nnaka was recruited by Mr. Olujimi, the former attorney general in 2004, he had not recovered anything. He said Nigeria will not pay Nnaka the $320 million he is asking for since he is not qualified to practise law in the Maryland area where the case is taking place.

The court also ruled that the lawyer could not claim to be representing Nigeria as the temporary letter given to him by Olujimi was not revalidated by Mohammed Adoke during the Goodluck Jonathan administration when the forfeiture case resumed in 2013.

Malami said that the case filed by Nnaka had delayed the return of the Abacha loot but the recent judgement dismissing the case should make things move faster. “We trust that this Order denying Nnaka’s frivolous claim to the Abacha assets, will help to allay the fear of the Nigerian general public arising from an online medium’s article which stated that Nigeria stands to lose $320 million on account of Nnaka’s Motion.

“We also hope that this Order will help to correct the many falsehoods and half-truths published in the past against the Office of the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation regarding this matter. “This is a positive development for Nigeria.”

Religion / Lord’s Chosen Members Perform Stunts To Preach (photos) by Damilola929(m): 8:49pm On Sep 18, 2016
Members of the Lord’s Chosen Charismatic Revival Ministries have yet again taken a different approach to spreading the word of God to members of the public.

In a recent outing, the members of the church whose location could not be ascertained as at press time were spotted on an awareness mission somersaulting on the road.

The attention-grabbing stunts have become a controversial topic as many people have openly questioned the morale behind the various stunts.

It would be recalled that about three weeks ago and early 2016 the church faced serious criticism after its members were caught rolling in a dirty water all in the name of ‘praising God.’ Many have regarded the latest stunt by the church members as crazy and unwarranted, asking if this is really what the mission of spreading the gospel entails.

A Twenty-Eight year old suspect who was arrested by the operatives of Rapid Response Squad (RRS) for pick-pocketing proved his mettle by stealing N1,200 again inside the Police’s office during an interrogation.

The suspect, Deji Ayoola, was hitherto, nabbed by the patrol team of the squad at Ojodu-Berger over the weekend for pick-pocketing a commuter trying to board a commercial vehicle to the Redemption Camp. He had successfully perpetrated the crime before the RRS operatives, who sighted him when he was removing the wallet pursued, arrested him.

It was about the time to pay fare that I discovered my wallet had disappeared…. In fact, I had even forgotten about the money until the following day, when an operative from RRS called me that my wallet was recovered from a suspect when they nabbed him. The Policeman added that they found my mobile number inside my wallet which made it easy for them to call me.I was shocked to hear this because I had already lost hope of recovering the money.”

The suspect who lived at Mowe area of Ogun State, confessed to the crime and blamed devil for it.

“I truly removed the wallet from his (victim) pocket before I was arrested by the policemen. They bundled me to their office immediately. It was the devil who pushed me into the act. I pray to God to forgive me”, he pleaded.

When the money dropped on the floor, rather than to draw her attention to the money, he pocketed it. The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Superintendent of Police, SP Dolapo Badmus, who confirmed the incident, said that the good people of Lagos State are sleeping with their eyes closed now as the crime rate in the state has drastically reduced. The suspect has been transferred to the State Environmental Task force on Environment for prosecution.
