Does it mean Mrs Buhari is not in support of Her husband? |
The photograph of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), at the Lagos State interdenominatio nal thanksgiving service standing with his running mate, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo; the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, and Governor Babatunde Fashola on the front row says something about the APC presidential candidate. There have been murmurs about his donning a fez cap in church – that he is a Muslim disrespecting Christian tradition. For me, his forgetting to take off his cap shows he has yet to fully master the nuances and rituals of spaces he is treading for the sake of his political ambition. If I were a Christian, I would pardon him. What is not so easily dismissable in the photo-op, however, is much more telling than his cap. In the picture, all the aforementioned men had their wives by their sides except Buhari. For a man who preaches “change” and desires to rule a country made up of men and women in almost equal halves, I wonder why he finds the anomaly of an “invisible wife” wholesome. Interestingly, this is not the first time that Mrs Aisha Buhari would be left behind in her husband’s aspiration. |

You save President Goodluck Jonathan's life, and he owes you a favor. What would you ask for? |
Question of the Day You save President Goodluck Jonathan's life, and he owes you a favor. What would you ask for? |
I got asked this question the other day – “What do teenagers want in a church?” It’s a tough question to answer, because its like asking “What kind of music do people like?” or “What food do kids eat?” What people look for in choosing a church is often personal taste – location, denomination, people they know who go there, where their parents go, music, youth program, type of building, and on and on and on… That is the wrong question. What teens want in a church doesn’t compare to what they NEED in a church. So what do teens need a church? 1. A place with Jesus – This is the #1 thing that teens need in a church. If they are not meeting Jesus, then it’s a waste of time. Making them more moral, knowing the Bible, or being nice people are pointless without Jesus. Don’t just teach them Jesus, help them know Jesus. 2. A place with adults who care – Teens need adults who can invest and poor their lives into them. They need adults who can mentor and guide them on the right path. They are told by so many adults that they’re not worth the time or effort, they need adults who genuinely care. 3. A place to belong – Teens yearn for belonging. They will often do stupid and damaging things to belong. How about if they were given a place to belong before they even came through the door? Our church or youth group should be a place where any student can be “home.” 4. A place to serve – It has always amazed me the bad rap that teens get for being lazy and selfish. I’ve been on too many mission trips, work camps, and service projects to see the zest and joy that teens approach serving. It’s a rare thing to see in adults, but teens love to serve and they need to be provided opportunities lest they end up being lazy and selfish adults. 5. A place to encourage (and be encouraged) – Teen culture is one of tearing down and destruction. Our church and youth group culture should be one of building up and encouraging. 6. A place to grow – You are teaching your students, but are they growing? If not, you need to look at why not. Students should know that when they come to youth group or church they will leave just a little bit better, a little bit changed. So be looking for ways to provide what teens need, not necessarily what they want. Giving them what they want might seem like the quickest way to get them in the door of your church, but giving them what they need is the best way to get them in the door of heaven. |

FG, ASUU Reach Agreement Over Strike The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities have reached an agreement to end the over five month old strike by ASUU. The lecturer’s association has however said that its members may return to work next week. The Supervising Minister of Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike told journalists at a meeting with the leadership of ASUU, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Universities Commission and five vice- chancellors of universities that all contending issues between the parties have been resolved. The parties signed a document to seal the agreement which spells great hope that the over five-month old strike may be called off within one week, although the president of ASUU, Professor Nasir Faggae declined to say what was contained in the document. ASUU’s demands include the upward review of the retirement age for professors from 65 to 70; adequate funding to revitalise the university system; progressive increase of budgetary allocations to the education sector by 26 per cent; transfer of federal government property to universities; setting up of research and development units by companies; payment of earned allowances; and renegotiation of the signed agreement. The agreement between the two is reached barely 24 hours after the Special Assistant on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe presented a proof of payment of N200 billion into an account with the Central Bank of Nigeria. The strike began on July 1 st 2013 and lasted for over five months before this resolution was reached. http://www.channelstv.com/home/2013/12/11/fg-ASUU-reach-agreement-over-strike |
