The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (jamb) generated a princely N8.453billion from the sales of forms to candidates seeking admission into tertiary establishments in Nigeria in 2018, PREMIUM TIMES will with authority report. A high official of the Board told this newspaper friday morning that the revenue came from payments made by 1,602,762 candidates who registered for the Unified Tertiary matriculation Examination (UTME) held across the country in March. Part of the revenue also came from registration fees paid by 135, 670.00 Direct Entry (DE) candidates, our source said. The official asked to not be named as a result of he failed to get official permission to impart the small print to journalists. Each of the total 1,798,438 UTME and direct entry candidates paid N5,500 for the forms out of that N4,700 goes to JAMB’s coffers since N800 is remitted to banks and suppliers of reading texts to candidates, the official more explained. The number of candidates was lower this year following reforms within the application method that effectively blocked multiple registration by candidates. About N1.8million UTME and de candidates wanted tertiary admissions in 2017 It is not specifically clear what proportion the Board can remit to the federal government this year after settling computer-based test centres, and paying other service providers and exam officials. In 2017, the examination body paid in N7.8 billion to the govt. Our source said the remitted for 2018 are going to be near to that amount. “As you know, change of course and universities are ongoing,” the official said. “It is only when we are done with the entire admission process for the year that we will be able to verify the total revenue for the year.” Our source said since the arrival of Is-haq Oloyede, a professor, as registrar, jamb had ceased to request funding from the federal government for its capital and recurrent expenditures. “The registrar is now asking the government to allow jamb handle the payment of salaries and allowances to its staff. He believes that will enable the board to boost the working condition of its employees by paying them higher. “Since he is blocking loopholes for stealing and eradicating corruption, the registrar believes it is vital that employees are better paid from the revenues they help make every year. That way, they will not be tempted to revert to corrupt acts.” The official said mr. Oloyede has also asked the government to allow jamb spend N2billion from its revenue this year, and another N2billion next year, to upgrade its corporate headquarters in abuja and improve its state offices across the country. “But as you know, there has to be approval and everything has to be appropriated before any spending can be made,” he said. When contacted, Prof. Oloyede confirmed jamb has made “more than N8billion” from sales of forms but declined further details. He directed further enquiries on the matter to the spokesperson of the Board, Fabian Benjamin. Mr. Benjamin confirmed the information provided by our source but added, “You know the direct entry admission is still on as well as change of course and university. so more money is likely to be generated from there. And our revenue can presumably go up.” Source: http://schoolruns.com.ng/jamb/ |

Gone are the days when polytechnic students is rated as the best in the field of practical but reverse is the case in this generation has polytechnic student no longer participate fully in practical? Well let’s find out the 7 eye opening lessons. LACK OF SELF CONFIDENCE Although in this 7 eye opening lessons, 70% of Nigeria student lacks confidence to compete with their international counterpart after graduation but most Polytechnic student feel empty after graduation due to the confidence they lack in themselves. Most of them don’t believe in what they can achieve. Whenever they are vying for something with their University counterparts, they started having this feeling of emptiness in them… THE INABILITY TO DEVELOP ONESELF As a matter of fact, most polytechnic in Nigeria lacks teaching facilities such as well unequipped laboratory, library etc. unlike their University counterpart who consult textbook as recommended by their lecturers, most polytechnic student depend solely on the handout or material given to them by their lecturers therefore they limit them self to this material without developing themselves. LOW SELF ESTEEM Some poly student do look down on themselves as if they are not real student. There’s this saying that “whichever way you present yourself, that is the way you will be accepted. DISPARITY Due to the disparity between University and polytechnic graduates in the labour market. The morale of some polytechnic student drop whenever they think of this. That’s the reason why some of them apply for direct entry after their ND/HND…. With PGD+HND, they are still not in the same level with their BSc counterparts. UNQUALIFIED ACADEMIC STAFF Leave it or take it , most polytechnics lacks qualified teaching staff. It is in polytechnic that you will see HND holder serving as teaching staff in the class room. The number of lecturers with PhD is nothing to write home about. Most of the staffs don’t develop themselves because they can reach the peak of their career(chief lecturer) with ordinary MSc unlike in the University where you will need to Obtain your Phd+many publications and a lot of research work to become a professor…. POOR ACADEMIC CURRICULUM How on earth can a student be offering 14-15 courses in a semester and the total day for the exam is a week or two. These makes them to read without understanding or to read just to pass their exams and this will affect in the nearest future. LACK OF RESEARCH Most polytechnics in Nigeria still uses 19th century method of teaching to teach their student. For example, a mechanical engineering student that uses 1970 model Peugeot for their Practical instead of modern cars. How will they be able to handle a modern vehicle after graduation. Most of these poly students are not exposed to research. SOLUTION ABOUT THE 7 EYE OPENING LESSONS ON POLYTECHNIC STUDENTS Development: Always develop yourself to be better than your university counterpart Believe in yourself: Believe it that you can be better than your university counterpart Proof yourself to people by displaying a marketable skill. Try to acquire skills relevant to your field… For example, as an engineering student, you can learn AutoCad or as a computer science student, you can learn programme. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (Jamb) is a Nigerian entrance examination board for tertiary level institution. It was established in 1978 for the conduct of entrance examinations for prospective undergraduate into Nigerian universities both private and public not excluding polytechnics, monotechnics and colleges of education. Despite the jubilation that greeted the passage of bill to extend its validity to 3 years by the Nigerian senate, the validity of this examination still remains a year. Jamb and other institutions in Nigeria has not been immune to malfeasance, which as from time to time diminish the integrity of this examination board. Though over the years, due to the desire of Nigerians to get a quality education, which I doubt existed in Nigeria. The number of candidates have increased steadily In 2011/2012 about 1,503,931 candidates obtained the form, till 2014, the number of candidates never exited 1.6 million except 2015 where it reduces to 1.4milion candidates, but rose to 1.7 million candidates previous years till the last one. Efforts to standardize jamb-failure and examination process In the last decades, there is not a year without a “damaging news” on the integrity of jamb, (Jamb-failure) ranging from fake registration centers, to special centers, illegal CBT centers. April 2017, the Nigeria Security and civil defence corps(NSCDC) uncovered a fake joint Admission matriculation board center in Maiduguri, at kawu shopping complex. The men of the command also arrested one Abizo Precious from Imo state who had collected #1,200 each to register 180 students. Also in Lagos the coordinate of the Lagos office of the board, Sunday Aladegbaye was vociferous in his speech after the arrest of two suspect operating illegal computer based test. Sunday said ” Jamb will fish out anyone thwarting its efforts to standardize examination and admission process in the country””. To jamb and her officials, those thwarting its efforts to standardize examination are people operating illegal centers, candidates malpractices etc. Can an examination be standardized without a standardized examination board?. The role of the Federal Government Despite the billions which the federal government makes provisions for the board, through the ministry of education yearly budget, the board still generate revenue through the sales of registration forms. With the remittance of money into the coffers of the federal government, it could be observed that Jamb has been short-changing Nigerians and making it hard for Nigerians who hardly make ends meet to buy the form and give the less privileged access to education. From “April 10” 2012 to August 2016, after all her expenditures jamb remitted #50,752,544 to the federal government coffers. Prof isaq Oloyede had within two years remitted #8,000,000,000 (eight billion) into the government purse. Since there is a consistent leftover over the years, it will be kind of Jamb to cut its registration form fee and make tertiary education accessible to all. Its core goal is not the generation of fund but by virtue of jamb act of 1978, the board sole goal is the general control over the conduct of matriculation examinations into universities , polytechnics, monotechnics and colleges of education. While chapter 183 of the JAMB’s Act states the source of fund for its running cost “The board shall set up and support a fund which shall consist of such sync as may be provided by the federal government for the running expenses of the board; and as such other sums may be collected or received by the board from other sources either in the execution of its role or in respect of any property…” Jamb can come out with a reasonable amount needed and charge potential candidates instead of excessive charges and generating fund for the government, leaving its main goal. This would make the less privileged have access to tertiary education. Damaging news on the integrity of jamb Just recently, Nigerians were embarrassed by the news of a snake swallowing the revenues from one of the jamb office in makurdi, Benue state. Despite the amusement the news attracted, it is a slap on the institution that claimed to saddled with conducting a standardize examination. In 21st century like this, Jamb should know better, that money should be handled electronically and not Hand to hand, such news from its agencies will only put the integrity of the board stained. There is an urgent need for jamb to be organized and purge itself of negligence. Just few days after jambites has expected results, there was news making it rounds that the results were out and people showed evidence by printing , before we could say jack Robinson, Jamb through is Spokesman Dr. Fabian Benjamin says” candidates should disregard the UTME results making the round, he said the results were fake, advising candidates to wait patiently for the original results to be released “”. One begin to wonder how a result printed from the jamb portal be considered fake? Could it have been a sabotage or was the Jamb system so porous to be hacked.?. Lamentations and backlash from candidates According to a report by DAILYPOST ” it was alleged that candidates who had earlier checked their result after the released of the original results were asked to wait for emerged, has also been removed.” One of the candidates, Max Odinukwize lamented on the issue of Jamb-failure said ” I had my UTME on the 10th of March and three days after my examination, I checked and saw my result using my phone , a day later, I went back to check and print it out, I was surprised when I saw the response ” No result yet and since that time till now, I haven’t seen my result”. This type of news will only make the examination board a laughingstock in the committee of nations and rate the examination and its product low out there. There should be a severe punishment for any person or office causing these messes in result, and if the systems are bad, it should be replaced with the money made, instead of turning itself to a money-making machine without care for the machine. Conclusion on JAMB-failure This is a call for Jamb to put its house in order and be more diligent , until we have a board with a reputable integrity, void of errors, jamb might find it difficult to conduct a standardized examination that will be generally acceptable. http://schoolruns.com.ng/jamb-failure/ |

The answers here paint a rosy picture. But all that is a big fat lie. Nigerian women are treated like TRASH. Nigerian women have to live in a society where they are treated as second class citizens. No matter what you have achieved, people are going to question when you are going to get married because that's apparently all you're good for. As a woman, if you have to report a case to the police, they will ask you to call your husband/brother/father or boyfriend because apparently you as an adult woman, you can't be trusted to report something that happened to you. How are you going to report domestic abuse to the same police asking you to come with your husband? Even if you did, you would be told “it's a family matter”. Let me ask those painting a picture of a life they know nothing about some questions. Do you even know what the average Nigerian woman faces? What about people blaming you for the crash of your marriage? Not your husband, you. What about being blamed for your husband hitting you? And when you open up to talk about it, you are blamed some more. What about servicemen asking for your husband, boyfriend, father or brother when things need to be repaired in your house? What about people blaming you for sexual assaults? Not your attacker, you. Telling you things like “why did you wear that?”, “It's your fault for tempting him” and many more. What about male compatriots telling you to shut up because you're a woman & shouldn't be talking where men are? What about getting married off before you're ready? Getting pulled out of school to become a wife? Getting VVF while giving birth? What about your husband treating you like a second class human being because you had the audacity to give birth via C-section? What about being sexually assaulted and harassed with your attacker telling you that you ought to be pleased because you're beautiful? What about being treated like you don't matter because you're female and would end up bearing another man's surname? Being educated last because your brother(s) are more useful to the family than you are? What about everyone believing that every material thing you have acquired is as a result of you laying on your back & opening your legs for it? What about being slut shamed, single shamed because you're a woman who wouldn't conform to the nonsense patriarchial nature of your society? What about men calling you a “man hater” because you dare to demand better treatment for yourself and other women? What about men raping women, female children as young as 2/3 years old? What about you Nigerian men labelling any woman or girl who refuses your advances, a prostitute aka ashewo? What about believing all a woman is good for is cooking your food & bearing your children? Before you come here and preach what you don't know, ask your sisters, mothers and aunts. They will tell you because your privilege blinds you to most of it. Lalasticlala & Seun plus do the needful |
