Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State has emerged first in the female category of the 2018 edition of the National Law Students Debate, held at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State.

Miss. Azubike Oluchi, a 100 level Law student who represented the University at the debate outshined her counterparts from University of Ibadan, Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Abuja, Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, and Imo State University.

Speaking in favour of the topic, “Not-Too-Young-To Run: a Development or a Fabricated Lie for Youths’ Political Participation”, Miss Azubike marshalled her points to the admiration of the judges. She convinced the panel of judges that the bill, recently passed by the National Assembly and signed by President Mohammadu Buhari, was done in good spirit for Nigerian youths. She posited that the youths, with the bill, have their destinies in their hands.

The act reviewed the age qualification for public office holders. For president, the age was reduced from 40 to 35; governor from 35 to 30; senator from 35 to 30; House of Representatives membership from 30 to 25 and State House of Assembly membership from 30 to 25.

Other universities that participated in the inter-universities debate were University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Delta State University, Abraka, Osun State University, Osogbo, Bowen University, Iwo, Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo and Lead City University, Ibadan.

The United Bank for Africa UBA] to extend a hand of partnership to Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo. The Regional Manager [West] of the bank, Mr. Bolaji Dare, stated this while commissioning a cash centre and mini branch in the campus of the University on Monday. He expressed delight at the level of infrastructural development in the University, and promised to make a case for the University to higher authorities in the bank, for it to embark on a project as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility [CRS] to the school.
Shortly before the commissioning, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Rt. Rev. Professor Dapo Asaju, expressed appreciation to the bank for opening the centre, saying the move will strengthen the relationship between both institutions. He also expressed joy that the bank has promised to make its presence further felt in the campus through Corporate Social Responsibility programme. He said the cash centre will help ease banking transactions for staff and students, and urged the bank to ensure that its service in the campus was top notch, advising that such service will win over more students and staff to the bank. Principal Officers of the University and some staff of the bank were present at the commissioning.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission into the University College Hospital (UCH Ibadan) School of Nursing in October 2018.

The course is for a period of three years, after which candidates will be presented for both the School and Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria Final Examination to qualify as Registered Nurses (RN).

UCH Ibadan Admission Requirements:
Only interested candidates who should not be younger than 17 ½ years of age and possess the West African Senior Secondary School Certificate (WAEC) or NECO with Credit passes in at least five (5) subjects which must include English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics at not more than two sittings may apply.

Method of Application:
Candidates should request for Application Forms with effect from Wednesday 6th June, 2018 at the School of Nursing, UCH, Ibadan with:
(i) The Receipt for the payment of a non-refundable Application Form fee of Seven thousand and Five hundred Naira (#7,500.00) only payable to UCH School of Nursing, University College Hospital, Ibadan, TSA Account. The Teller should be converted to the Hospital’s Receipt at the UCH Accounts Department before approaching the School of Nursing for the Form.
(ii) Payment of Two Hundred Naira (#200.00) only into the Oyo State Nursing & Midwifery Committee Account, First Bank Ltd 2019704292.
(iii) Four (4) Recent passport photographs which should be Colored but on white background only.
Applicant’s photograph with head covers (Hijab, Scarf, Beret etc) must show their full faces with both ears.

Professor Aderounmu, who is the President of the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS), made this declaration on Thursday, June 7, 2018, at the opening session of the 5th Covenant University Conference on E-Governance in Nigeria (CUCEN), where he gave a keynote address titled, ‘The Future of Elections in Nigeria: Leveraging ICT Infrastructure for Sustainable National Electoral Process’.

Speaking at the conference with the theme, ‘E-Government for National Democratic Consolidation and Transformation: Agenda Setting for the 2019 General Elections and Transparency in Governance’, Professor Aderounmu said that Nigeria and indeed Sub-Saharan Africa must distinguish elections as the best opportunity to encourage political leaders to promote innovation in the polity. Using ICT to elect credible leaders, he stated, could motivate successful and satisfied politicians to encourage emerging governments to adapt the innovations to mainstream development and governance.

“It is a welcome development that the leveraging of technology had started, even if rudimentary, with the last 2015 elections that ushered in the present administration in Nigeria, but there is still a long way to go,” said the NCS President.

While highlighting the areas where ICT tools and applications could transform future electoral processes and elections in Nigeria, Professor Aderounmu, who is the Director, Information Technology and Communications Unit, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, mentioned sensitisation, civic education and e-inclusion, political campaigns, constituency delimitation, voter registration and data capture, voter verification and voting, vote counting and computation, and result dissemination.

In his recommendations, the Keynote Speaker urged the Federal Government to urgently push for broadband access all over the country through the Public Private Partnership models; the development of a robust sustainability model; investment in high quality IT manpower development; the establishment of IT Parks and Digital Centres across the country; and the embracement of a unified database for Nigeria. If the government demonstrates the political will, Nigeria, he assured, would catch up with the rest of the world’s advanced democracies with the adoption of ICT tools in securing electoral process integrity and deepening a truly democratic culture.

Earlier, while declaring CUCEN 2018 open, the Chancellor and Chairman Board of Regents, Covenant University, Dr. David O. Oyedepo, represented by Pastor Adeniyi Beecroft, pointed out that Nigeria had the potentials to flourish in every sector of the economy and truly manifest as the giant of Africa but for leadership inadequacies. He added that the 2018 general elections would offer Nigerians a golden opportunity to effect a change across the various echelons of leadership.

He posited that what was needed in the country after several decades of independence was to elect a transformative, vibrant, detribalised, and transparent leader; a leader with the capacity to harness the abundant resources of the country to engender true human and economic development.

Dr. Oyedepo admonished participants at the conference and the voting populace in Nigeria to make ideology-based manifesto the yardstick for a choice candidate, with emphasis on the institutionalisation of good governance.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor AAA. Atayero, noted that public investment in information and communication technologies (ICTs) was mandatory if the principles of effective governance enunciated by the United Nations Public Administration Programme were to be realised. These, he said, were efficiency in delivering public services, citizens’ participation and engagement in government businesses, as well as access to information and transparency in government affairs.

He averred that greater use of information and communication technology in governance could intensify transparency in governance, citizen’s participation, and consolidation of Nigeria’s democratic process to foster national transformation, characterised by improved efficiency in the delivery of public services to Nigerians, convenient and faster access to government services, as well as responsive governance.

While explaining the motive behind the e-governance conference, the Director, Covenant University Centre for E-Business and E-Government Research, Professor Charles Ayo, said that it addresses specifically topical issues in the polity. The centre, according to him, provides support to governments and business communities in the developing nations with relevant IT tools for effective transformation of the economies.

Special Guest Speakers at the conference included the Executive Director (Business Development) Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement Systems (NIBSS) Plc, Mr. Niyi Ajao; the Director, National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) Dr. Ali Pantami, represented by Mr. Lukman Lamid; and the Executive Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Professor Umar Garba Dambatta, represented by Dr. Henry Nkemadu.

Also at the event were the Registrar, Covenant University, Dr. Olumuyiwa Oludayo; Chaplain, Pastor Promise Omidiora; Deans of the various Colleges; faculty and staff; and participants from government establishments and business organisations.

In a recent report by Scival in which forty-eight (48) Nigerian institutions and 500 leading authors in Business, Management and Accounting were captured, Covenant University is a clear leader.

In the institutional ranking, Covenant University with 234 publications, 335 authors and a citation impact factor of 0.58, has an overwhelming edge over forty-seven other leading universities in the research field captured in the report.

How to Apply for FUTA Pre-Degree Admission.

1. Candidates are to visit www.futa.edu.ng. Click on CCE Portal and PDS Application form to Create an account.

2. Login into your account with your Username and Password. Click on Payment to generate invoice for the application form.

3. Candidates are to pay application fee of Fifteen thousand naira (N15,000.00) excluding bank charges on e-transact in any bank on the e-transact platform.

4. Login to your account on-line to confirm payment and complete the on-line PDS application form.

5. Submit the Online application form and print out a copy of the Examination Schedule slip.
a. The application opens on Monday 4th June, 2018 and closes on Friday 21st September, 2018. All awaiting results candidates must upload their results on the www.futa.edu.ng on or before the closing date.
b. Entrance Examination will hold on Friday 28th September, 2018.
