NYSCSlain Corpers: Our Hope Of Better Living Is Dashed, Parent Laments by darkfishet(op): 3:20pm On May 09, 2011
Gbongan (Osun) – Pa Rufus Gbenjo, 73, and Madam Sarah Gbenjo, 71, parents of Ebenezer, one of the NYSC members slain in the post-election violence in Bauchi on April 18, say that their hope of better living have been dashed.

They said on Sunday that they had looked up to Ebenezer as the `messiah’ of the family.

At the home of the late Ebenezer at Isale Obada area in Gbongan, headquarters of Ayedaada Local Government Area of Osun, the parents were still in deep sorrow and in anguish.

According to Madam Sarah Gbenjo, Ebenezer, the last child of the family, and his immediate elder sister, Funmilade, were the two graduates produced by the family.

“The two are the promising children among the five children of my union with Pa Rufus Gbenjo, a retired driver from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

“Two of our children are deaf and dumb, while the third one is a photographer and they all  depend on us for survival, despite our poor state of living.

“Funmilade who graduated with masters degree since 2006, has no job.

“Ebenezer was always consoling us; assuring us that an end would soon come to our poverty; promising to cater for the other siblings who are handicapped,” Madam Gbenjo explained.

The parents appealed to the government to assist the family by giving Funmilade a job to enable her to cater for the family’s needs.

Ebenezer was a graduate of Economic Education from the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, Ogun State.

He was serving in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area in the state, where he was recruited as one of the electoral officers by the INEC and posted to Giade town where he was during the post-election violence.

According to Funmilade, the deceased’s sister, Ebenezer and other youth corps members met their death at the Giade Police Station where they sought refuge when the violence broke out.

But were not protected as they were attacked and killed by the rioters.

She wondered why the police whose primary duty was the protection of lives and property could not save the lives of his brother and other slain corpers.

She appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan not to allow the perpetrators of the crime to go unpunished, lamenting that the demise of her brother had added to her burden.

“I looked up to Ebenezer as my companion who would support me in taking care of our aged parents but he has gone; left me to face the task alone without a job,”she lamented.

Meanwhile, Mr Adeniji Adesiyan, the elder brother to the late Jelili Adeniji, the second slain corp member from the area, has urged the security agents to fish out those responsible for the killing of the NYSC members.

According to Adeniji, only the prosecution and conviction of the killers will reduce the pain and shock inflicted by Jelili’s death.

Jelili, a banking and finance graduate, from Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, was killed at the Corpers’ Lodge in Bauchi by the rioters.

The bereaved brother worried about the health of his aged mother, which had deteriorated immediately she heard the news of Jelili’s death.

Ebenezer was buried on Monday, May 2, at Saint Peter’s Anglican Church Cemetary, Oke Apata, Gbongan, after a church service while Jelili was buried on May 3, according to Muslim rites in his father’s compound at Isale-Oja area of the town, about 500 meters away from Ebenezer’s compound, amidst tears.

The presiding priest of St. Peters Church, Rev Oladayo Olaniran, called on the Federal Government to compensate the families of the slain corpers and to ensure that the killers faced justice.

The two burial services attracted the state’s Deputy Governor, Mrs Grace Laoye-Tomori, the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Moshood Adeoti and the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr Gboyega Oyetola.

The Osun Head of Service, Elder Segun Akinwusi and Mrs Clara Babatunde, NYSC South-West zonal coordinator, who represented the Director-General of NYSC, Brig. Gen Ismaila Tsiga, were among dignitaries who attended the burial services.

Laoye-Tomori, who spoke on behalf of Gov. Rauf Aregbesola, at the burial of the duo promised that the state government would assist the families of the slain corps members.

She described the late corps members  as national heroes, who died in the course of national assignment.

She also used the occasion to thank President Goodluck Jonathan for his concern for members of the bereaved families. (NAN)

PoliticsBribes, Delays Increase Across African Borders – Survey by darkfishet(op): 2:53pm On May 09, 2011
Abuja – Bribes and delays increased significantly across African borders during the 2010 survey period conducted by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)-West Africa Trade Hub.

This was contained in the 14th Improved Road Transport Governance (IRTG) report on road governance, jointly published by USAID and the West Africa Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA), made available on Sunday.

The report stated that the delays more than doubled during the October to December 2010 survey period.

According to the report, truckers importing and exporting goods stop at numerous check-points, delaying their delivery times.

In addition, bribes paid increased transport costs, amounting to an unnecessary increase in the cost of goods to customers, it said.

The report noted road harassments faced by West African truckers and shippers through the number of control points, the amount of bribes and time of delay.

It stated that truck drivers reported delays of 25 minutes per 100 km compared to the 2009 report which showed about 12 minutes of delay for every 100 km travelled.

The highest delays, according to the report, occurred in Senegal with 28 minutes per 100 km and the lowest in Togo with 14 minutes per 100 km.

The report also showed that bribes increased by almost 13 per cent, from 64 dollars to 72 dollars per 100 km.

It stated that Ghana continued to show the lowest level of about two dollars per 100 km and Cote D’Ivoire having the highest of about 14 dollars per 100 km.

The report showed that the number of checkpoints where drivers experienced delays and bribes remained virtually unchanged.

It also stated that Senegal and Mali continued to have the highest density of checkpoints of 2.42 per 100 km and 2.39 per 100 km respectively.

The report stated that road harassment on interstates corridors across West Africa cost states tens of thousands of dollars a month.

This challenge, the report noted, obstructs the path to sustainable economic growth.

The report advised West African states to take necessary action by working with local governments, civil society organisations and private sector partners in reducing road harassment on their main corridors.

Adopting this measure, it said, would enable them to achieve good road governance for sustainable economic development. (NAN)

PoliticsAmbrose Alli Varsity Crisis Worsens by darkfishet(op): 2:08pm On May 09, 2011
By SIMON EBEGBULEM

BENIN – THE crisis rocking the Edo State-owned Ambrose Alli University, AAU, Ekpoma, following the removal of the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Sam Uniamikogho, by Governor Adams Oshiomhole, continued weekend, as a faction of the Academic  Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, faulted the claim by the Chairman of the union in the university, Dr S.  Ighalo, that the union disagreed with the decision of the governor and the subsequent appointment of Prof. C. Agbebaku as Acting  Vice-Chancellor.

It will be recalled that the Dr Ighalo-led ASUU had passed a resolution, describing the action of the governor as illegal and called for the re-instatement of Prof. Uniamikogho as Vice-Chancellor.

But a faction of ASUU in a counter resolution by Prof. Don Akhilomen, Dr. J. Aigbodioh and Mr. A. Agbtor,  described the resolution as misleading, saying that “the congress of ASUU did not at any time demand  the re-instatement of the former Vice-Chancellor as alleged in the purported resolution.

“The issue of giving a one-week ultimatum to the Visitor (Oshiomhole) to reverse his decision on sack the former VC was neither raised nor discussed at the congress meeting.

“It is misleading to suggest that congress resolved not to work with the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Agbebaku, as published in the purported resolutions. The general public should disregard the information disseminated by the ASUU cabal headed by Dr Ighalo in the ASUU bulletin and the NTA Iruekpen news.”

Politics'lawyer’ Dupes 75-yr-old Of N12m by darkfishet(op): 1:24pm On May 09, 2011
By Oamen Areguamen

LAGOS—A Yaba Magistrate court has been told how a fake lawyer, Samuel Oladipupo Jibode allegedly duped a 75 years old man, Mr. Monsuru Adeyemi, of N10 million under the pretense of selling a property to him.

In his testimony to the court weekend, Mr. Adeyemi, said Jibode hid his personality and used another prominent lawyer’s name, Mr. David Olufemi, to swindle him of N10 million.

He told the presiding Magistrate A. O. Isaac that when the accused approached him, he had the inclination that the proposal for the purchase of the building may not afterall be genuine, but the moment he, the accused person, mentioned the name of the lawyer to him, he released the money.

Under cross-examination by counsel representing the accused person, Mr. Adeyemi said on 14 May 2010, the agent, Mr, Ojo, and himself, one  Mr. Oluyewola, the landlord of the  building, Mr. Jegede, and two of Jegede’s children went to Mr. Jibode’s office at Oyingbo to pay the agreed sum of N10 million.

He added that he was to pay a balance of N2 million after all the process have been completed.

He told the court: “I told him not to gamble with me. This is my retirement benefit from my pension from flour mill. I want to buy this house so that at my old age I will not suffer to train my children in school.

“I complained about the Deed of Assignment which he prepared because there was no seal on it. Lawyer Jibode asked me not to worry. He called me three days latter on phone and told me that the landlord has been strangled to death by an unknown person.”

“I rushed down only to discovered that he has park out of his office and his phone numbers were no more reachable.”

PoliticsCrack In Akala’s Exco by darkfishet(op): 1:14pm On May 09, 2011
By LEKE ADESERI, South West Regional Editor & OLA AJAYI
IBADAN – TWENTY days to the change of government in Oyo State, a major crack has opened up in the cabinet of the outgoing governor, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala.

A key cabinet member and commissioner for health, Dr. Isaac Owolabi Babalola alleged, yesterday, that “some desperate, greedy and intellectually percolated cabal” within the state government circle was plotting to kill him.

But the government through the Special Assistant to the Governor on Communication, Dotun Oyelade, said Dr. Owolabi was unfair on Governor Akala.

The physically disturbed commissioner, while speaking with newsmen on his ordeal in the hands of his alleged assailants said, he was attacked by a gang of four to six armed men at Connoil Filling Station, Mokola, area of Ibadan, at about 8.30p.m on Friday.

He said the hoodlums who were armed with knives and cudgels would have overpowered him when he was about refilling his car at the filling station, adding that he later escaped after wrenching himself free from the attackers.

Vanguard gathered that he had been beaten to stupor after leaving the state executive council meeting held at the Executive Chamber of the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Agodi.

Babalola, who is one of the pillars of the administration of Otunba Akala was said to have stirred the hornet’s nest by his comments at the meeting which was chaired by Governor Akala, that the failure of  Akala to clinch the governorship seat for the second term should be blamed on its refusal to find lasting solution to the eight-month strike of the medical practitioners in the state.

A source said that Babalola’s other ‘sin’ was his refusal to give approval for the release of N250 million from the ministry’s treasury to an Ibadan-based politician.

Dr. Owolabi was quoted as saying: “I won’t do anything that I would not be able to face the EFCC and defend after leaving office.”

Though, Babalola did not mention anybody in particular as suspect, a response from the government quarters stated that it was unfair and uncharitable for him to infer, under any guise that Governor Akala knew anything about his trauma in the hands of those who allegedly assaulted him.

The message stated: “One fails to understand why Owolabi will crave for such publicity even while he remains part and parcel of the out-going administration and soon after the elections. He should search his conscience and let the world know the exact reason why he has to make such an unfounded allegation. He should stop hiding behind the mask. In other words, Dr. Owolabi can defect or turn coat but he should do it decently.”

Public consumption

Despite the attack, Owolabi said he remained loyal to Governor Akala. He noted:  “I’m still a member of the state executive council and I’m under allegiance not to reveal what are not for public consumption .But all my actions have been out of very serious sense of responsibility and trust to the Executive Governor of Oyo State and by extension the good people of Oyo State.”

When asked if he had reported the attack to the police and the State Security Service, he answered in affirmative.
Confirming this, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Baba Adisa Bolanta said he did but did not state that some people were plotting to assassinate him.

Babalola remained non_committal on the alleged N250 million request. He said: “All I can assure you is that I will not be a party to any last minute arrangement to deplete the resources of our commonwealth , and to my mind, this is being true to the cause. I intend staying on the course.

PoliticsDefence Minister’s Suspension: We ‘re Not Part Of It – Ondo Pdp by darkfishet(op): 1:09pm On May 09, 2011
BY DAYO JOHNSON

AKURE – THE crisis in  the Ondo chapter of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, over alleged   suspension of the Defence Minister, Prince Adetokunbo Kayode, SAN, by the  state,PDP, deepened weekend as the local branches of the party dissociated themselves from the purported suspension.

Leadership of the party led by its state Chairman, Dr Tayo Dairo and its Secretary, Mr Olusola Oludipe had suspened Kayode via a letter to the National Secretariat alledging anti-party activities.

In their reaction, the party in Akoko Northwest local government area of the state where the Minister comes from, said they were not aware of any suspension of  Kayode for any anti-party activities.

According to a letter to the National Chairman of the Party, Dr Haliru Mohammed, the Chairman of the local branch of the party, Prince Alaba Arohunmolase,  Secretary, Mr Apalowo and the Treasurer, Chief Z.O Abegunde described the purported suspension of Kayode “as frivolous and reprehensible.”

They said “for a party man to be suspended, the initiative must be from the ward level to the local government through the state to the National Secretariat. The purported suspension did not follow the party constitution and thus remain null and void and of no effect.”

Also, they said Kayode as a party man who is loyal to his boss, President Goodluck Jonathan could not be treated as a dissident by the party which he  committed his time and fund to sustain.

They pointed out that “the Minister made available adequate funds to the party through the state chairman before and during the last elections. Similarly, provisions were made from the units, wards and local government.

“He gave PDP candidates who were contesting elections reasonable amount of money. All these facts are verifiable and figures will be published in due course. If at all we lost the elections in Ondo State through the connivance of the Minister as claimed by Dairo and his group, what happened in Ogun, Oyo and Osun States respectively?

“Did the Minister connive with the Action Congress of Nigeria in those states? Definitely, No! Rather than sitting down and re-strategize to reposition the party on the part of victory for future elections, people are making baseless, mischievous and ridiculous allegations against the person of the Minister.”

Meanwhile, reports from the South West meeting of the party held weekend said that it was agreed that the suspension of the Minister was misplaced and the leadership of the party were directed to rescind the decision. The meeting held at Ibadan was said to have been chaired by the Former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

PoliticsAs Ngige Goes To Senate by darkfishet(op): 1:07pm On May 09, 2011
THE victory of Dr. Chris Nwabueze Ngige in the Anambra Central Senatorial re-run election was never a surprise to those who know his worth and what he has represented since he ventured into politics.

But to the few cynics in Anambra State Government House and their cohorts, it was a slap and affront, as all their well-hatched plots to nip in the bud  the people’s wish failed them at last.

From now, Ngige’s victory which is that of the people will continue to haunt the occupants of Anambra Government House for so long. This is because it has exposed their false claims over the years that they were on ground in the State.

It has exposed what really happened in the Feburary 6, 2010 governorship election in the State which outcome is still pending in the court.

As for Prof. Dora Akunyili, it was a great political mistake and miscalculation to have aligned with a government that thrives on false claims of bogus achievements on the pages of newspapers and political opportunism. She lost gallantly to a political giant.

The outcome of the general election has really shown that APGA is really Agulu Progressives Grand Alliance, not the dream APGA of Chief Chekwas Okorie that was for the liberation of Igboland and creating a political platform for them to negotiate for power like their counterpart in the South West.

After handing APGA tickets for senatorial seats and other elective seats to his Agulu sisters and brothers, the people of Anambra State waited for Governor Peter Obi and his cohorts at the polling booths and vented their anger on him.

It was unfortunate for Obi that Prof. Maurice Iwu is longer in-charge of INEC for easy compromising of voters register as was done on February 6, 2010 governorship election in the State. Obi should realise that the people’s action in the elections was a clear indication that they have lost confidence in him.

Even the President Goodluck Jonathan’s PDP umbrella could not save Governor Obi, Prof.  Akunyili, Victor Umeh and their cohorts.  Now the question is where is APGA in Anambra State and Igboland? It is now obvious that Agulu Progressives Grand Alliance is dead and buried, while we look forward for the revival and sustenance of the origin All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, of our people’s dream.

Before the re-run, Akunyili, Obi and Umeh were bragging that they will beat Ngige in the re-run. The state allegedly ensured that clothes, rice and other Greek gifts were hurriedly shared to the people within the affected wards and polling units where re-run took place. Government machineries were deployed, traditional rulers and their people were intimidated to do government’s wish.

The likes of Prof Elias Nnabuife and Prof. Charles Asimone who played vital and controversial roles in the alleged result mutilation and cancellation were again appointed by INEC in collaboration with the State government to do their biddings in the exercise, against the wishes of the people.Despite all this, the people knowing what they wanted, stood their ground and voted according to their conscience. Even putting Akunyili ahead with 625 votes before the re-run could not save her as Ngige’s political hurricane swept her and her cohorts off the zone.

With the outcome, Dr. Alex Anene, the initial Returning Officer has been vindicated and the likes of Akunyili, Obi and Umeh should tender unreserved apology to him, because he is the new hero of democracy today.

Anene’s action has shown that in the quest for materialism, especially in the State, there are still men of integrity in the society. For those who have threatened to take legal action against him for smearing their names, Nigerians are eagerly waiting for them, so that more exposition will be made. Anene’s vow to defend the result he announced initially showed that he is a man of honour. Between Akunyili, Anene and INEC, who should be blamed and vindicated?

Obviously the outcome of the re-run has passed a clear judgment of the role of every dramatis persona in the controversy that trailed the initial election in the district.

Ngige’s victory is a true manifestation of the people and God’s wish over the wish of a cabal that has been holding the State to ransom for years in the name of governance. It is obvious that Ngige phobia is hunting the State government, especially with the pending governorship case between the Governor Obi and Ngige which the outcome is still dicey and unpredictable.

Ngige came, saw and conquered. His administration in Anambra State as governor symbolised liberation and quality leadership, not only in the State, but in the entire Igbo land as he left a legacy that his successor has not been able to match over the years .

Unlike other politicians, Ngige spends most of his times in his village, Alor, not for any reason but to be in constant touch with his people. As a grassroot and astute politician, he knows his people’s problems and always handy to proffer solution. That is why he has remained a household name in  Igboland and beyond.

It was Ngige who made the people of the State to know that the State government can do much for the people. Before becoming governor in 2003, his initial aspiration was to become a senator, but he was prevailed upon to shelve his ambition for Senator Ikechukwu Abana, who later lost the seat to Senator Ben Obi.

Since he joined the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, in 2007, he has remained there as a matter of principle, despite several offers to him from the ruling PDP. It is rare and takes more than a spirit of a man to resist such offers from the PDP, especially before the Anambra governorship election in 2010 when he was approached to fly the party’s flag before it was given to Prof. Charles Soludo.

Now that Ngige is going to the Senate, expectations are high and people have expressed confidence that he will deliver and represent them well. They believed that he has done it before and that he is going to do it again.

Generally, it is believed that he is not going to represent only Anambra Central, but the entire Igbo race, because of the quality he is made of and what he represents in the political circle.

PoliticsI Didn’t Pay Any Judge To Influence Trial, Says Igbinedion by darkfishet(op): 1:04pm On May 09, 2011
By Innocent Anaba

Former Edo State Governor, Chief Lucky Igbinedion, yesterday, denied the report credited to the Chairman of the  Economic and Financial Crimes Commission,  EFCC, Mrs.Farida Waziri , that he allegedly paid  N10 billion to a judge in order to frustrate his ongoing trial.

The former governor in a statement  by his counsel, Mr. Olusegun  Odubela, said the publication was  embarrassing and scandalous.

“The allegation made by the EFCC boss, Mrs. Warizi  existed in her  imagination. Our client  did not and  will not take any take step  to subvert the cause of justice. We  challenge the EFCC  to produce the so called petition against the judge,” Odubela said.

He added,  “it will be in the interest of the media to desist from “made-belief” information emanating from the commission as  we have the  instruction of our client to clear his name in the court of law, hence a retraction of the story is advised.”

Meanwhile, a Federal High Court sitting in Benin, Edo State, will on May 31, rule on the preliminary objection  by Igbinedion, challenging  Federal Government’s move to trial him twice on the same allegation as argued by his lead counsel, Chief Rickey Tarfa, SAN.

PoliticsPresidential Poll: Cpc Files Appeal by darkfishet(op): 12:56pm On May 09, 2011
By Ikechukwu Nnochiri
ABUJA — The Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, yesterday, formally challenged the outcome of the 2011 Presidential election, before an election petition tribunal sitting at the premises of the Abuja Division of the Appeal Court.

The party which perfected the filing processes through its lead counsel, Chief Ricky Tarfa, SAN, yesterday evening, alleged  that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, attempted to frustrate its bid to challenge the election result in court by failing to fulfill  its promise via a letter dated April 18, agreeing to furnish it with all ballot papers and result sheets used in the election.

The CPC is seeking a nullification of the cumulative result of the April 16 presidential election, which it insisted was not the true reflection of what transpired at the various polling centres across the federation.

It specifically alleged that the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, conspired with some dubious electoral officers and massively allocated votes in favour of incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan.

Going by the express provisions of the Electoral Act, 2010 and the 1999 Constitution as amended, the CPC would have been foreclosed from filing its petition again if it had failed to do so within 21 days after the presidential election result was announced by the electoral umpire, a date that expires today.

It maintained that INEC’s refusal to comply with the provision of section 151 (1) & (2) of the Electoral Act, 2010, as amended, and make available all ballot papers and result sheets used during the just concluded presidential election, further calls to question the 22,495,187 votes announced in favour of President Jonathan, on April 18, by the INEC chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega.
While insisting that its Presidential flag-bearer, Muhammadu Buhari, garnered more than the 12,214,853 votes allocated to him by the electoral body, it alleged that a formal forensic examination of the ballot papers, would further reveal what it termed “a most sordid electoral fraud ever known to man.”

It said though INEC ab-initio agreed to make available to it, these sensitive electoral materials that it said were in safe custody, upon payment of the necessary fees, but that INEC, however, declined to disclose the required amount.

“Since we demanded the amount of the fees to be paid and to which account., the INEC headquarters that had all along assumed responsibility, directed us to liaise with the various State INEC.

“It was this buck_passing that compelled us to seek judicial order for INEC to ensure the sanctity and fidelity of these sensitive materials and make same available to us, according to section 151 (1) & (2) of the Electoral Act, 2010 (as amended). It is our considered hope and desire that INEC shall abide and be seen to abide with judicial rulings in respect of this case.

“With any iota of doubt, the decision to seek judicial redress is not for anything but the establishment of the truth and inexorably, enriching the nation’s jurisprudence”, the party stated.

It would be recalled that CPC had on Friday, gone before the presidential election petition tribunal, asking it to compel INEC and all its Resident Electoral Commissioners, REC’s,

to furnish it with certain documents and material evidences that it said would be pivotal to the success of its petition against the cumulative result that was declared by the electoral empire in favour of the ruling PDP.

Those it Joined as defendants in the suit were INEC, Prof Jega, the presidential candidate of the PDP, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, his running mate, Architect Namadi Sambo, the PDP, and all the Resident Electoral Commissioners for the 36 states of the federation including the Federal Capital Territory ,FCT.

According to an ex_parte motion filed  pursuant to Sections 77(1) and 151 of the Electoral Act, 2010 (as amended), Order 26 Rule 8 of the Federal High Court Civil Procedure Rules, 2009, the opposition party specifically sought an order directing all the respondents to seal all the Direct Data Capturing Machines (DDC machines), ballot papers, as well as the ballot boxes used in the Presidential Election held on the 16th day of April, 2011, with a view to preserving same for Forensic test in the course of hearing a petition it is yet to file before the tribunal.

CPC in its ex_parte motion, sought  an order directing the1st and 2nd respondents, INEC and Prof Jega, to produce for inspection of the applicant and permitting the applicant to take copies of the documents/materials/ballot papers used in the conduct of the Presidential Election held on Saturday the 16th day of April, 2011.

“An order of the Honorable Tribunal directing the 1st and 2nd respondents to allow access to the petitioner, her solicitors, her agents and her biometric experts access to Biometric Data base of all registered voters in Nigeria in the presence of the respondents for the purpose of cross checking the finger prints on the face of the Ballot Papers cast in the States, Local Government, Wards , Polling units in respect of complaints in this petition and to compare them with finger prints, entries in the Biometric Database already in the custody of 1st respondent for the purpose of making analysis for use in evidence before this Honorable Tribunal.

“An order of the Honorable Court directing the 1st,2nd and 4th _42nd respondents to provide to the applicant for its use for its petition, the list of INEC officials and ad hoc staff containing their names addresses, occupations and other designations of the said officers and staff used in the presidential election across the nation.

“An order of this Honorable Court directing the 1st, 2nd and 4th_42nd respondents to provide to the applicant for its use for its petition, the list of local contractors engaged by INEC to print ballot papers used in the Presidential Election and copies of contract papers used in the Presidential election and copies of contract papers executed by INEC evidencing the awards of the contract to them.

As well as “an order of this Honorable court directing the 1st, 2nd, and 4th_42nd respondents to provide to the applicant for its use for its petition, guidelines and manuals issued by INEC for the conduct of 2011 General Election”.

PoliticsI Will Personally Shoot Killers Of Corps Members – Gov Yuguda by darkfishet(op): 12:53pm On May 09, 2011
ABUJA – GOVERNOR Isa Yuguda of Bauchi State said, yesterday, that over 600 suspects have so far been arrested and were being prosecuted in connection with the murder of nine members of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, during the post election violence in the State.

Yuguda who spoke with newsmen in Abuja, said that when he dies he would be accountable to his God for the killings as the governor of the State, adding that the suspects whom he described as beasts and animals would be made to face the full wrath of the law for taking the lives of human beings.

The governor said that if the law permitted, he would personally shoot the suspects if they are finally found to be guilty of the offence.

Yuguda said: “Definitely, the law must take its own course. We have already arrested over 600 people, some of them actually killed the corpse members. We will prosecute them and if the law will allow me, after they are found guilty, I will take the gun and shoot them myself.

Denies spitting on graves of corps members.

“What is the correlation between that headline that I spat on top of the grave of these corps members? These boys that have toiled for twenty years with their parents paying their school fees, they came to serve me. They were serving me happily. Anytime I went to them, they milled around me, and I offered to give them jobs immediately they finished.

Each of them was willing to take up a job in Bauchi because by the provision of the constitution, any one can become a citizen of Bauchi State after seven years because that is what the constitution says.

“You become an indigene of an environment after seven years and I give you permanent and pensionable appointment right from day one. How can someone now say I spat on the corpses of the corps members? I became news, people were writing articles about me as if they don’t know my antecedent. You portrayed me as an animal, as somebody who is heartless, I think that person who has engineered the write-up, probably, he would have been compromised to run me down as an individual.”

The governor who noted that youth corps members were gullible, said the government should stop exposing them to the hazards of elections.

He added: “I personally feel that corps members shouldn’t have been exposed to the dangerous trend of Nigerian politics because we have so many ‘animals’ around who were prepared to snatch boxes, who were trying to use machete to kill people and these youths are serving the nation.

“I said very strongly that they shouldn’t have been part of that very serious process that exposed them to danger and by the time I handed over the corps members to INEC, they were not under my protection even though I was the governor.

“INEC should have given them sufficient protection, but as I have said, what will I do, did I ask God when I was coming to this earth? I didn’t ask the Almighty God when I was coming and same when I would be going. I am not sure if I will live until evening, or when I will die, but if somebody is destined to die a day he was destined to die, what are you going to do about it?

The governor who explained that he made the statement regarding destiny in the light of his Islamic faith, said: “As a Muslim, that is what Islam says for any Muslim that there is time to come to the world and time to go. I can not spat on somebody who is a dead man. I wept even when the Director of NYSC came, when I was making my speech, I had to break my speech because I was remembering the day when those souls would meet me in my grave and they will ask me why did you allow people to slaughter me in your own land when you were a leader?”

On his message to parents of the slain corps members and the nation, Yuguda said: “I have offered condolences to the parents, in fact, I am even supposed to be condoled. I sympathise with the parents and I sympathise with myself.

I sympathise with the parents because they lost their children whom they had spent twenty years paying school fees for, looking up to them to help them when they eventually finish their youth service and I sympathise with myself because these great souls were lost in my land where I am the governor.

Who won the election in Bauchi?

“And you ask a question, why did this happen to these corps members in the first instance? Who won the election in Bauchi? If you wanted to vote for PDP that day, they macheted your hands, cut off your hands, macheted your fingers.

You dared not vote for PDP, there were hoodlums there, singing all sorts of things. In fact that same day, they burnt down the INEC offices, they burnt down our vehicles, burnt down mosques and churches.

The house of my Secretary to the State Government was burnt down to ashes together with the Mosque. His father’s house was burnt down to ashes with the Mosque and yet there was no cancellation of the election there, so it is very sad, a sad thing in the history of our country that a corps member would be molested.”

PoliticsConsultants’ Strike Paralyses Services At Unth by darkfishet(op): 12:49pm On May 09, 2011
By Tony Edike

ENUGU – MEDICAL services at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, UNTH, Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu, have been paralysed following the withdrawal of services by members of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria, MDCAN, in the teaching hospital.

Consultants in the hospital suspended clinical services to patients last Thursday after a congress of the association resolved to embark on an “immediate strike ” to protest what they called “serial underpayment and non-payment of several allowances from 2001 to date.”

In the notice of withdrawal of clinical services signed by Dr. I. J. Okorafor and Dr. I. O. Onwuekwe, Chairman and Secretary of MDCAN UNTH chapter, respectively, the consultants vowed that the strike would only be called off, if the management of the hospital corrected the anomalies and paid their outstanding arrears.

The  notice dated May 5, 2011, and addressed to the outgoing Chief Medical Director of UNTH, Dr. Tony Mbah, recalled that several notices had been given to the management, the last of which was through a letter with reference No. MDCAN/04/11/S.7, dated April 28, 2011, in which one week extension to a strike notice that elapsed more than six weeks ago, was issued.

Giving reasons for the strike, the aggrieved consultants lamented that the hospital’s management had persistently underpaid certain allowances since 2001.

PoliticsSupreme Court Halts Execution Of N6.1bn Debt Judgment Against Shell by darkfishet(op): 12:37pm On May 09, 2011
By Ikechukwu Nnochiri
ABUJA — The Supreme Court has ordered stay of execution on the judgment of a Port Harcourt Division of the Appeal Court, which on April 15, 2010, ordered Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC, to pay N1.6 billion to two families in Rivers State.

The benefiting families of Rumuchuchota-Mgbussiku and Rumukurukuru-Mgbuesilaru, both of Okporo Rumukoroshe town in the Obio/Apkor Local Government Area of Rivers State, had in 1958, executed a Deed of Lease over 153.5 acres of land for 99 years with Shell Petroleum.

However, the families subsequently went before a High Court sitting in Rivers State and sought the forfeiture of the lease on grounds that there was a breach of the terms of the lease regarding the payment of rent and obligation not to sublet without the consent of the lessor.

In its determination of the plaintiff’s case, the High Court accordingly granted the relief sought by the families, adding that Shell Petroleum should pay N40,000 million per acre of the land to the plaintiffs, describing it as a fair market value of the land should the company insist on retaining both relationships.

Dissatisfied with the verdict, Shell Petroleum took the matter to the Port Harcourt Division of the appeal court which not only upheld the trial court judgment, but went ahead and ordered the company to promptly pay the said cost of N1.6 billion to the affected families.

Still not satisfied with the outcome of its appeal, the company took the matter to the apex court, seeking an order to stay execution and enforcement of the judgment of the High Court of Rivers State delivered on May 5, 2007.

The appellant further sought an order or injunction for the preservation of the ‘Res’ of the matter as well as for the  preservation of the status quo ante, pending the determination of its appeal before the Supreme Court.

In deciding the application, a five-man panel of justices of the apex court on Friday, ordered a stay of execution of the lower court’s judgment pending the determination of the appeal.

In the lead ruling read by Justice Bode Rhodes-Vivour, he held: “In my view, if a stay of execution is not granted, the beneficiaries of the judgment would go into Shell Residential Area (The RES) driven by all kinds of desires, the end is best imagined. The RES may be destroyed before the appeal is determined.

PoliticsCnpp Hails Apga’s Victory In Imo by darkfishet(op): 12:32pm On May 09, 2011
By Tony Edike
ENUGU—THE Conference of Nigeria Political Parties, CNPP, yesterday, praised the victory of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA and the Imo State Governor-elect, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, saying the exercise was like snatching victory from the jaws of lions.

The group said that the resilience of the people of Imo State against perceived encumbrances on the election was responsible for the victory just as it commiserated with those who lost their lives in the election and called on their families to bear the irreparable loss and take solace on the truism that their battle was not in vain.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Osita Okechukwu, the CNPP alleged connivance between the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC and Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to swing victory against APGA by the late arrival of materials to the councils, stressing that such was deliberately orchestrated to deny the electorate opportunity to exercise their franchise,

While congratulating them on their victory at the poll, he said, “we have to congratulate each other. It is a very great opportunity to be chosen to represent your people. Though you have won the election, you still have many challenges ahead of you.
