Community development service (CDS) is one of the four essential component of National Youth Service Year. It is therefore mandatory for every corps members to participate actively in it. It was a ground breaking event as Anti-HIV and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) CDS Groups of Odeda Local Government, Ogun State took their final sensitization and mega projects to the pupils of Nawair-Ud-Deen Grammar School, Obantoko, Abeokuta. The sensitization exercise began with a talk tagged " The relevance of Education to Self Actualisation and National Development" delivered by Mr Ismaeel of SDGs CDS unit. He encouraged the pupils to embrace education and shun social vices, he accentuated the need to succeed regardless of challenges they might encounter on their way to success. Ismael, a first class graduate of linguistics and literacy studies used himself as a case study, informing the students about several obstacles he encountered but he didn't allow them to deter him from achieving his goals. The second lecture dwelt on " HIV, Symptoms and Prevention" and was jointly delivered by Pharm. Onwuka Chinedu Kester and Scientist Okpeye Chidi Peter. Mr. Chinedu started by stating the discouraging statistics of people living with HIV in Nigeria, especially amongst teens between the ages of 15 - 24 years and the need for HIV education especially in schools. Chidi took his time to explain the meaning of HIV and AIDS, the body defensive system and how it could be susceptible to various infections when attacked by the virus. The session also included STI games/activities which helped the students understand how easily HIV can be transmitted. The session ended by emphasising the ABCD of HIV prevention and establishing the fact that abstinence is the best and safest means of preventing HIV. The CDs group then proceeded to distribute incentives such as books, pens, stationery items to the students who answered related questions correctly. The capstone of the event was the erection of a billboard with HIV prevention messages in the school premises by the ANTI-HIV CDS Group, knowing fully well that the messages will serve as reminders even while we might have been long gone. There is an intrinsic joy attached to contributing positively to your immediate community. It is an awesome feeling to be part of the solution, and not the problem. I therefore want to appreciate NYSC for this glorious opportunity to serve and as well implore prospective corps members to give their best during their service year. I conclude with the words of John F. Kennedy " Never ask what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country". This should encourage you. I use to be there and I made it eventually. My Cgpa was 4.17 at the end of 200level and guess what I didn't give up. What I did was to go back to the drawing board and restrategise, my major advice is for you to identify your priority and be ready to pay the sacrifice, it won't be easy but with determination, impossibility is nothing but a figment of our imagination. You can use this formula to extrapolate your CGPA Anticipated CGPA = ( present CGPA *number of semester spent so far ) + (anticipated G.P) ______________________________________________ Number of semester spent + 1 The above formula will help you to plan your semester ahead including your desire grade in each course, this is necessary to keep you focused on the job. I hope my 2cent help. |

Scholastica16:Thanks a lot bro. I'll do just that. |
Salutation erudite scholars in the building. I sincerely hope that one day I'll belong to cadre of intelligentsia such as Scholasticlala16, Dremanuel, gokuu, ponpon, Dr TimetoSmile, Dr Hopeful et al. It's painful that I'm discovering this thread very late, I'll be wrapping up my Nysc December and I desire to further my studies abroad. Taking finance and time into consideration, I doubt if I can meet up with Fall 2018 admission deadline. I'm thinking of diverting my attention to other scholarship opportunities either in the UK or Canada that may not require GRE and maybe from there apply for 2019 fall. This is my humble profile Discipline ( Project Management,FUTA) UG CGPA (4.52) One joint publication with Project supervisor Zero work/research experience I need advice on next course of action. Scholasticlala16 please be my mentor ? |
One of the best I've come across on this forum, I admire your writing skills - concise and insightful. Kudos |

It was another impacting moment when the Anti-HIV CDS GROUP of Odeda Local Government in conjunction with her fellow partner in progress, Sustainable Development Goals CDS unit took their sensitization exercise to market women at Osiele market, Osiele Abeokuta. The sensitization exercise began as early as 9 a.m. with over 50 market women in attendance, the program began with lecture on "Importance of keeping the environment clean " delivered by Miss Lawal Aishat Abiola of the SDG CDS. She emphasised why good hygiene practice is a necessity among market women especially those selling food items to prevent contamination of food items thereby ensuring safety of final consumers. Coincidentally, every Thursday is set aside by the State Government for sanitation of markets across the state. She concluded by advising them to embrace the initiative as cleanliness is next to health and wealth. The second lecture dwelt on " HIV Education" and was delivered by Miss Akinboyewa Oluwasimidele. She accentuated the importance of knowing one's HIV status as well as the ABCD of HIV prevention. The accronym ABCD stands for: A for Abstinence, B for be faithful, C for use Condom D for Do not share sharp objects respectively. She concluded by informing them of steps to take in case of rape and necessary actions to take within 72 hours of occurrence. After the lectures which lasted for about 45 minutes , the Anti-HIV medical team led by President of the Group, Pharmacist Onwuka Chinedu Kester embarked on malaria test for the market women. They were advised on importance of using treated Mosquito net and were given prescription of drugs for those who tested positive. The team also proceeded to test the market executives whose chairperson is Madam Amoke Ogundele, the Iyalode of Osiele market Abeokuta. In her remarks, she expressed her joy for the magnanimity showed by the corps members in visiting the market and prayed that the good Lord will grant their heart desires. The President of SDG CDS, Mr. Azuibuike Valentine in his vote of thanks expressed gratitude for the opportunity granted us to contribute our quota in ensuring good and sound health as it is one of the sustainable developmental goals. He also assured them that subsequent sensitization exercise will include incentives. Personally, it was a thing of joy and happiness for us meeting these wonderful people and being able to help them in our own little way. The golden message therefore is that we are all partners in progress and everyone should strive to contribute their own quota no matter how little it may be so that our dear country can be great again. Aladeojebi Oluwatosin Isaiah Media and ICT department Anti-HIV CDS UNIT Odeda Local Government, Ogun State. We will be grateful if this will be found worthy of promise land ![]()
