Nairaland / General / Nigeria’s Debt Profile Q4 2019: A Look At The Figures by Databod: 9:42am On Apr 03, 2020
As at the end of the fourth quarter of 2019, Nigeria’s public debt portfolio stood at N27.40trn ($84.05bn). This represents an increase of 4.54% when compared to the third quarter of 2019, when the country recorded a total public debt of N26.21trn. These figures are becoming increasingly alarming considering the fact that as at Q1 2013, Nigeria’s public debt stood at only N7.53trn.

The external component of the Q4 2019 debt rose by a whopping 9% within 3 months! The external debt now accounts for 33% of Nigeria’s total debt stock.

Also, the domestic debt stock at N18.37trn ($56.37bn) accounted for 67% of the total nation’s debt. This represents a 2% increase when compared to the N17.94trn of the previous quarter.

Putting the figures in perspective; the country borrowed a total of N37,620 every second in the last 12 months (i.e. Q4 2018 to Q4 2019).

Also, should we decide to distribute Nigeria’s debt profile across the country’s population of 200 million, each citizen currently will owe the sum of N137,007.

It is worth noting that the bulk of the domestic debts originated from the Federal Government, with the FG accounting for 79.59% of the total domestic debts.

Nairaland / General / Data Shows South East Is Heavily Dependent On Federal Allocation by Databod: 1:08pm On Feb 27, 2020
We did a detailed review of the revenue profile of Nigerian states and regions and the results are startling.

The North-East geopolitical zone ranked as the most dependent region on federal allocation. This isn’t really surprising considering the fact that the region has been battling insurgency for over a decade. A whopping 85% of the revenue of North Eastern states were allocations from the federal government.

On the other hand, the South East surprisingly ranked as the second most dependent region on federal allocation. No one would expect a state in the eastern part of Nigeria to be more dependent on federal allocation than Kaduna! This is rather mind-boggling as the eastern part of Nigeria has always been seen to be industrious and hardworking.

Looking at the chart below, Federal Allocation accounts for about 76% of the total revenue of the states in the South East in the year 2019. This huge dependence on federal allocation raises the question of how the region will survive if it attains its much-vaulted nationhood of Biafra.

A further look at the figures indicates that the South West is the most independent region of the lot. The region only has a 36% dependence on Federal Government allocation, while about 64% of income is generated within the region as IGR. Of course, within the South West, there is variation in performance, with Lagos and Ogun states performing better than the other 4 states in the region in terms of Internally Generated Revenues.

The South-South was found to be the second most independent region with a 69.30% dependence on Federal Government allocation.

For further information on how each region faired in 2019, check the charts below. Visit Databod for the full breakdown.

Education / SHOCKING: Public Schools Have Better WAEC Results Than Private Schools by Databod: 1:40pm On Nov 06, 2019
Are private schools are better than public schools? This has been a topic of interest to a wide spectrum of the Nigeria society – parents, academics and government officials. While the majority opinion seems to be that the private schools are better than the public ones, there is no empirical data to support this.

Most parents recognize the importance of quality education to the future of their children. Hence, the sacrifice they make to ensure that their kids have the best in education. And to a lot of people, quality education equals private school education. Some parents spend as much as 60 percent of their income on school fees.
But, are these high costs of private education justified?

A look at students’ performances in WASSCE in public and private secondary schools across Nigeria over three years paints a rather surprising picture.

In 2016, 172,821 students from different private secondary schools across Nigeria sat for the WAEC examination. Out of which a total of 63,077 made five credits and above including English and Mathematics. This represents 36.5% of the total number of students that sat for the exam.

On the other hand, across the country, a total of 1,543,974 public secondary students sat for WAEC exam in 2016. 807,780 of these public schools students made five credits and above. This represents 52.3% of the total number of students.

2017 data paints an even stupefying picture. That year, only 24% (32,000) of the 133,258 students that sat for WASSCE in private schools made 5 credits and above (including Mathematics and English). On the other hand, the pass rate (credit in 5 or more subjects including English and Mathematics) for public schools was 56.53% (881,039) out of a total of 1,558,452 that sat for the exams.

While in 2018, 33.81% of the total students in private schools made five credits and above, while 48.15% of those in public schools made five credits and above (including Mathematics and English).

See the graph below for a detailed breakdown.

Nairaland / General / Fuel Subsidy In Nigeria: A Look At The Figures by Databod: 9:43am On May 15, 2019
The Nigerian government in its bid to ease the effect of petroleum pump price on its citizens expended over #9.3 trillion on fuel subsidy over the past ten years. This has continued to raise burning questions in different quarters, with some calling for an end to the payment, while others expressing the need for government to continue the subsidy.

From 2008 to 2010, the federal government spent a total of #1.7 trillion on fuel subsidy, however, in 2011 alone, the federal government spent over #2 trillion subsidizing fuel. This sudden increase instigated the then President in the person of Goodluck Jonathan, to announce the removal of fuel subsidy on the 1st of January, 2012. However, the announcement was greeted by several protests across the country, with many stating their indignation at the removal, while others expressed their displeasure at the insensitivity of the government for making such an announcement on the 1st day of the year.

Politics / Gender Inequality In Nigerian Politics (1999 Vs 2015 Vs 2019) by Databod: 4:19pm On Apr 29, 2019
About half of Nigeria’s population is made up of women. However, it is quite surprising and unfortunate that women occupy a very marginal political leadership position in the country. Rather than get better, the outcome of the 2019 general election has shown a worsening of the abysmal representation of women in government.

Since independence, Nigeria has had very little by way of women participation in the Nation’s governance. The recently concluded 2019 general elections saw 73 candidates vie for the position of presidency, however, only 7 of those 73 were women.

For deputy governors, the 2007 and 2015 elections produced female Deputy Governors in 6 states which remains the highest till date. The recently concluded 2019 election saw only 3 states having female deputy Governors.

The 9th House of Representatives is expected to have the lowest number of women representation since independence. The 2019 election results showed that of the 360 available seats, only 11 of them will be occupied by females. Contrast this with what obtained in 2011 when 26 women won election into the house (the highest till date).

For a more illustrative look at women representation in political leadership position in Nigeria since 1999, please see the infographic below.

Nairaland / General / Rivers State Has The Highest Suicide Rate In Nigeria - NBS by Databod: 3:12pm On Jul 13, 2018
According to data released by the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics, Rivers state tops the chart for the number of suicides in Nigeria in 2017. The total number of suicide cases recorded in Nigeria in 2017 was 332 with Rivers state alone recording 105 suicide cases. This massive number accounts for over 31% of the nation’s total suicide rate.

Accounting for less than half of Rivers state, Lagos closed in with 47 recorded suicide cases. Borno followed suit with 45 cases while Katsina and Ogun had 23 and 20 suicide cases respectively. Jigawa, Niger and Osun state had 2 suicide cases while Gombe and Taraba had just one each.

For attempted suicide, a total of 196 cases were reported. Rivers had the highest records with 112 cases. Followed by Edo with 54, Ekiti with 8, Lagos with 5 and Ogun with 4 cases. For the states with the least recorded attempted suicide cases, Gombe had 2, while Bayelsa, Kano, Kwara and Niger state had one each.

Suicide remains a very fragile topic to broach in Nigeria. It is abhorred by almost every culture and religion. More so, the government has strict laws and suitable sentences for persons charged with suicide. How ironical for a nation that does little or nothing for its citizens!

What do you think could be the cause of the high suicide rates?

Politics / Gender Representation In Nigerian Elected Offices From 1999-2018 by Databod: 4:28pm On Jul 12, 2018
Gender representation in the governance of the nation has remained radically bias. From 1999 till 2018, the percentage of women occupying positions of authority has fluctuated between 5% to 10%. The female community still remains vastly unrepresented in both executive and legislative positions.

Statistics show that a woman has never been elected president or vice president in Nigeria. No woman has been elected governor of a state. Also, only five females have been appointed deputy governors in any state within almost a decade.

The infographic below gives more details.

Will Nigeria ever have a female president or governor?

Nairaland / General / Cross River, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom Top 2018 Budget Per Head Figures by Databod: 12:29pm On Feb 13, 2018
By the beginning of January 2018, all 36 states in Nigeria had presented their spending/budget plans for the year. A cursory glance shows that Cross River state has the highest budget figure of 1.3 trillion naira, closely followed by Lagos state with 1.04 trillion naira.

As can be seen from the Databod chart, the top 5 states in terms of budget size are Cross river, Lagos, Akwa-ibom, Rivers and Delta states respectively. On the other hand, Yobe had the lowest budget proposal. Yobe is closely followed by Taraba, Enugu, Ekiti and Gombe in the league of states with the least budget.

However, looking at the budget figures does not tell the full story. Rather, it can paint a misleading picture.

Anyone interested in the future of their state should look at their state’s per-capita spend data. In some ways, the data is a roadmap of a state’s future prospect (especially the capital component). In the chart below, we have taken a look at the Budget-Per-Capita of Nigeria states.

Just as it does in overall budget size, Cross river still leads the pack in Budget-Per-Capital. In second place comes Bayelsa, followed by Akwa Ibom, Ebonyi and Rivers. Contrary to what we would have expected, Lagos is not even in the top five. Rather, Lagos comes 8th in the league.

Business / Lagos, Kaduna, Edo Most Indebted States In Nigeria. by Databod: 10:17am On Feb 12, 2018
Debt is not neccesarily bad. Many organizations borrow money to fund their growth and expansion. So do governments. But it becomes a problem when a borrower has nothing tangible to show for its accumulated debt stock. It gets even more worrying if the debt stock becomes unsustainable (in terms of ability to pay back).

So, how do Nigeria states measure up on their debt profiles and ability to service it? We took a look at the debt and dept-per-capita of Nigeria states.

Lagos leads the pack with more than 1.44trillion naira in debt. Kaduna, Edo, Cross River & Enugu make up the top 5.

Looking at the debt-per-head (per capita) figures, each Lagosian owes an average of N25,288. Meanwhile, Edo comes second with each citizen owing N18,538. Cross-River comes third with each citizen of the state owing an average of N15,995. (See the chart below for the full list)

It is important to note that, while a state like Lagos may lead the league tables for indebtedness but then, the state equally has the most capacity to pay back/service it. States like Taraba, Borno, Yobe might have the least debt stock, but then, these are states that have the hold the least promises as financial entities. In other words, they have the least capacity and opportunity to borrow money.
