Kante scored the only goal of the game in the 51st minute when he broke forward from midfield to convert David Luiz's throughball. There were few clear-cut chances as the Blues dominated possession and Palace sat back hoping to catch the opposition on the counter-attack - a tactic which failed to work as Roy Hodgson's Eagles took 85 minutes to register their first effort. That is now two successive games without a goal. Chelsea's Willian came close to scoring with a free-kick that struck the post, and Ross Barkley also hit the woodwork with a hooked effort. Fourth-placed Blues now have 43 points, one behind City and two behind Spurs. Palace remain in 14th with 19 points.

Southampton responded to David Silva's early opener when Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg took the ball off Oleksandr Zinchenko and fired it into the top corner. City had luck on their side when Raheem Sterling's shot deflected off James Ward-Prowse to make it 2-1. Sergio Aguero's back-post header completed the scoring before half-time. Southampton goalscorer Hojbjerg - who had only just returned from suspension - was shown a straight red card for a lunging tackle on Fernandinho with just over five minutes to go. City had a number of decent chances as Silva, Aguero and Riyad Mahrez all went close in the first half and Aguero smacked the crossbar after the break. Southampton threatened too and Charlie Austin was twice denied by City keeper Ederson in the first half before Hojbjerg's equaliser. But the Saints were ultimately undone by Pep Guardiola's free-flowing side, who move up to second place in the table. |

A Mapo Customary Court, on Friday in Ibadan, dissolved a 10-year-old union between one Omowumi Lamidi and Mukaila Lamidi, following claims by the wife that she was forced into the marriage. The president of the court, Ademola Odunade, held that the court dissolved the union due to exploitation and the threat to life raised by Omowumi. Odunade also advised Omowumi to avoid confrontation with Mukaila, popularly known as ‘Auxiliary’ for her safety. He awarded the custody of the three-year-old child produced by the union to Omowumi and ordered Mukaila to pay a monthly feeding allowance of N5,000 for the child’s upkeep. Besides, he ordered Mukaila to be responsible for the child’s welfare, including education. In her petition, Omowumi, a chemist, who resides at Olodo area of Ibadan, said Mukaila had forced her into the marriage. “My lord, Mukaila used his position as a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers ((NURTW) in Ibadan to exploit me when he kidnapped me 10 years ago into a marriage, which I never wanted. “On that day, Mukaila sent some hooligans to carry me into his home without my parents’ consent and in fact, he was the one, who deflowered me. “Since then, he had maintained that I remained the best among all his wives and concubines. “With my experience as a chemist, I refused to get pregnant for him despite all his forceful sexual intercourse with me. “However, three years ago, I decided to have a baby for Mukaila because I knew that I was not getting any younger and there was no means of breaking out of his shackles. “I even stood by him when he was sentenced to prison a few years ago. “When Mukaila returned from the prison, he resumed his assault on me and his latest hit was his threat to take my life,” she said. She told the court that her parents were helpless about the situation and urged the court to separate them. Although, Mukaila was not in court, the bailiff told the court that he had served Mukaila the court’s notices on several occasions, which he turned down. |
A former Adamawa State Governor, Murtala Nyako, has commenced a courtesy tour of the state with a charge on the electorate to vote in 2019 for credible candidates, especially for those who would empower them, as lack of empowerment programmes is responsible for prevailing drug abuse and thuggery perpetuated by youths in the state. Murtala Nyako whose long convoy spent all of Thursday touring Toungo, Ganye and Jada local government areas in the southern zone of the state, said his visit was to thank the people for their support during his administration. Nyako who governed Adamawa State between 2007 and 2014, said at the palace of Gangwari Ganye, “It is obvious for us to vote into power, credible people who would bring empowerment and job creation. We must also vote for a government that would provide quality education to our children in the state.” Earlier, the Gangwari Ganye, Alhaji Umar Adamu Sanda, assured that the state and its people would tap from the wealth of experience of the former governor in view of positions he held in the past. “The state is fortunate to have you as son of the soil. Your track records and wealth of experience will serve as catalog for reference to all,” the Ganye paramount ruler said. Nyako who hails from Mayo Belwa, another LGA in southern Adamawa, served in the Nigerian Navy for 30 years, rising to the rank of a vice admiral and becoming the military governor of Niger State from February 1976 to December 1977 and then as Chief of Naval Staff between 1990 and 1992. Over the weekend, the military banned operations by the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) in Nigeria’s volatile northeast claiming the agency spied for Boko Haram terrorists operating in the region. The army claimed UNICEF staff was sabotaging its counter-terrorism efforts by alleging human rights abuses by the military. With the dust over that spat yet to settle, the military has now alleged Amnesty International, the human rights group, is out to “destabilize” and “dismember” Nigeria. |
Almost 1,000 North Korean defectors have had their personal data leaked after a computer at a South Korean resettlement centre was hacked, the unification ministry said. A personal computer at the state-run centre was found to have been "infected with a malicious code". The ministry said this is thought to be the first large-scale information leak involving North Korean defectors. The hackers' identity and the origin of the cyber-attack is not yet confirmed. Could defectors affect North Korea talks? N Korea defector numbers 'drop' under Kim My friend the North Korean defector The North Gyeongsang resettlement centre is among 25 institutes the ministry runs to help an estimated 32,000 defectors adjust to life in South Korea. Are defectors' families in danger? The North Korean government does not know the identities of all citizens who have defected. Some may be a considered a "missing persons" case, or they may have even been registered as dead. Some 997 North Korean defectors have now been informed that their names, birth dates and addresses have been leaked but it is not clear what impact this will have. Analysts say there are some concerns that the leak could endanger the families of the defectors that still remain in North Korea. Sokeel Park, South Korea Country Director for Liberty in North Korea, an international NGO that assists North Korean defectors, says this hack will make other defectors feel less safe living in South Korea. They may change their names, phone numbers and home addresses. On 19 December, the unification ministry became aware of the leak after they found a malicious program installed on a desktop at a centre in North Gyeongsang province. The ministry said that no computers at other Hana centres across the country had been hacked. One expert on North Korean cyber-warfare, Simon Choi, believes that this might not be the first time a Hana centre has been hacked. "[There is a North Korean hacking] group [that] mainly targets [the] North Korean defector community... we are aware that [this group] tried to hack a Hana centre last year," he told the BBC. However, he added that it was not yet clear if any North Korean groups were responsible for the latest attack. Investigations by the ministry and the police are currently ongoing, with the ministry saying it would "do its best to prevent such an incident from happening again". Has North Korea been behind previous attacks? Cyber-security experts have been warning of the increasing sophistication of hackers from the North for some time. In September, US prosecutors charged a North Korean man alleged to have been involved in creating the malicious software used to cripple the UK's National Health Service. The 2017 incident left NHS staff reverting to pen and paper after being locked out of computer systems. One of the most high profile hacks linked to North Korea in recent years targeted Sony's entertainment business in 2014 - wiping out massive amounts of data and leading to the online distribution of emails, and sensitive personal data. North Korean state media has also often threatened to silence defectors in the South who make derogatory statements about the regime. Sokeel Park told the BBC that cyber-attacks and phishing attempts on people working on North Korea are a common occurrence. "They represent an asymmetric advantage for the North Korean authorities because attribution for cyber-attacks is so difficult and because the North Korean government intentionally relies so little on the internet", he added. However, the government in the South has not pointed the finger at North Korea this time. |
