I read somewhere that the rules of normalisation are not to be followed in absolutely all cases. Is this one of those cases? I really don't know.
ProgrammingRe: Please I Need Help On Some Database Design Issues! by davidt(op): 12:20pm On May 20, 2008
I understand that in samm's solution, there are three columns in the course table that are redundant, score1, score2, score3 and this is probably the reason sbucareer normalised the the course table and used a foreign key instead. The problem is that I do not understand how the normalisation and consequent usage of a foreign key would handle the three required scores e.g. midsemester, assignments and final exam as indicated in samm's solution. I understand it is good practice to avoid repitition of columns but how would the normalised version actually work in handling the three scores.

Could anyone please explain this to me? Thanks a bunch.

@sbucareer
Thanks for your contribution. It is highly appreciated.

@samm
Thanks again.

I understand basic database design concepts (primary keys, foreign keys, etc.) and I'm sure that has helped me in understanding your ideas and putting them into my skull and they seem to be a really good way out of my problem. Thanks a lot. I'll work on this and see how it goes.

I respect,

More design ideas are welcome by any other person willing to help,

Thanks a lot guys.

ProgrammingRe: Most Easy And Understandable Programming Language For Beginners? by davidt(m): 3:15pm On May 19, 2008
As to why I would suggest Python. Python is a powerful object-oriented programming language with really simple syntax. It therefore goes a long way in illustrating programming concepts which run through most languages in an easy to understand way. Python is sufficiently powerful and useful on its own for various sorts of applications but if one decides to learn any other programming language after thoroughly understanding Python syntax and concepts, the person in question would find the learning process easier due to his previous knowledge of Python. That has been my experience.

I've been wondering how to come up with a relational database design for a student grading and result collation system. I am not particularly good at database design and I would need some expert help.

What I want to know in essence is how to design a relational database to handle student results and GPA calculation for a typical university (100L - 400L/500L). The data would be stored in such a way that a particular student would have his records stored from 100L - 400L during his stay in the university.

Please, my explanation may not be exhaustive enough but what I am essentially trying to know is how a database is designed to handle student results and GPA in a university.

Database design happens to be my bane in computer programming and I need serious help please!!! Thanks a bunch.

I'd say anyone should start learning programming by learning Python.

The guy is really good, no doubt. The first time I heard Ololufe, I did not know it was a Nigerian song until I heard the chorus. His voice is really good and I hope he plays his cards right 'coz I thiink he deserves to be one of the very best in the Nigerian music industry.

I'm surprised nobody is talking about time travel, probably because it is merely a far-fetched dream.

Actually, I strongly believe humans would get to a stage where we would be able to manipulate the time-space continuum. Although, this may have disastrous consequences, I believe this would a wonderful discovery that would change the world as we know it.

Someone recently introduced (or rather told me about) me to Adobe Flex. I would like to know if there are any experienced users of Adobe Flex in the nairaland community to educate me on its pros and cons and its role in software development.

I know it is flash-based and its operational language if ActionScript.

Just how cool is it?

ComputersRe: My Laptops Battery Is Jst 10mins.battery Probs/virus Probs Which One Is It? by davidt(m): 2:10pm On May 12, 2008
Laptop is slow - Most likely virus problems, get a good antivirus and carry out a full system scan.
Battery life is not more than ten minutes - Battery is used out, get a new battery.

I think it is that simple.
