The Red Devils have won just two of
their last eight matches in all
competitions and sit 11 points off fourth
place in the Premier League
Jose Mourinho has been sacked by
Manchester United following their
disappointing start to the season.
The Red Devils currently sit sixth in the
Premier League table but have already
lost five times in 17 matches , leaving
them 19 points behind leaders Liverpool
and 11 off fourth-placed Chelsea in the
fight for Champions League places.
That follows a summer transfer window
in which Mourinho routinely complained
about a lack of signings, with the
Portuguese unable to persuade the
club's hierarchy to sign a new centre-
back.
Mourinho has continued to drop hints
that he remains unhappy at that failure
to spend big, and he now leaves after
two-and-a-half years at the Old Trafford
helm, with his final match in charge
Sunday's 3-1 defeat to arch-rivals
Liverpool.
"Manchester United announces that
manager Jose Mourinho has left the club
with immediate effect," a statement read.
"The club would like to thank Jose for his
work during his time at Manchester
United and to wish him success in the
future.
"A new caretaker manager will be
appointed until the end of the current
season, while the club conducts a
thorough recruitment process for a new,
full-time manager."
Mourinho replaced Louis van Gaal in the
United hotseat in the summer of 2016
and was tasked with leading the 20-time
English champions back to the top of the
domestic game after a barren three
years since Sir Alex Ferguson's
appointment.
He started well, winning the Community
Shield in his first match in charge before
claiming the League Cup thanks to a
Zlatan Ibrahimovic-inspired 3-2 win over
Southampton.
Form in the league was not as strong,
however, with the Red Devils only able to
finish in sixth place, though their season
did end on a high as a 2-0 win over Ajax
in the final of the Europa League saw
them qualify for the 2017-18 Champions
League.
Mourinho's second season in charge
saw United finish a distant second in the
Premier League to Pep Guardiola's
record-breaking Manchester City, and
while they crashed out of the Champions
League to Sevilla in the last 16 and lost
the FA Cup final to Chelsea, there was
hope the former Real Madrid boss would
be able to kick on again having signed a
new improved contract in the early
weeks of 2018.
That has not come to pass, however,
with United currently on a run of just
two wins from eight matches in all
competitions.
Further to displays on the pitch, reports
of dressing room unrest have
overshadowed Man Utd's performances
over the course of the season, with
Mourinho's relationship with club-record
signing Paul Pogba a constant talking
point.
World Cup winner Pogba has struggled
for consistency under Mourinho, and this
season things seem to have taken a turn
for the worse, with the former Juventus
man unable to hold down a regular
berth in the ex-Chelsea boss' preferred
11.
The nadir came at Anfield on Sunday,
with Mourinho deciding against
bringing Pogba off the bench despite his
side needing to find a goal to get back
into the game following Xherdan
Shaqiri's own match-winning
performance as a substitute for Jurgen
Klopp's side.
Whomever takes temporary charge until
the end of the season will now be tasked
with pushing United back into the race
to finish in the top four while also
plotting a path towards silverware in
both the Champions League - where they
play Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16 -
and the FA Cup, with Reading their third-
round opponents.
Reports suggest assistant coach Michael
Carrick is not in the frame to take on that
role, with the interim manager's first
game on Saturday away at Cardiff City,
and an external candidate expected to
be appointed within 48 hours.
Zinedine Zidane and Mauricio Pochettino,
meanwhile, are among the favourites to
take the role full-time come the summer. |

Elsewhere, reigning champions Real
Madrid will take on Ajax, Manchester City
must tackle Schalke and Tottenham will
battle with Borussia Dortmund
Manchester United will face Neymar and
Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16 of the
Champions League, while Liverpool boss
Jurgen Klopp must tackle German
opposition in the form of Bayern Munich.
Manchester City take on Schalke,
Tottenham battle Borussia Dortmund
and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Juventus meet
Atletico Madrid.
Elsewhere, Lyon have been handed the
unenviable task of trying to shackle
Lionel Messi and Barcelona, Roma have
been paired with Porto and Ajax with
reigning champions Real Madrid.
The biggest tie of the round will see Jose
Mourinho’s out-of-sorts Manchester
United side lock horns with Ligue 1 title
holders PSG.
The French giants boast the likes of
Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Edinson
Cavani on their books and have made no
secret of their desire to complement
domestic dominance with European
glory.
United have endured a testing 2018-19
campaign to date, but continental
competition could offer welcome relief
as they ready themselves for the biggest
of tests.
Liverpool, who reached the final of last
season’s competition, are also going to
have to do things the hard way if they
are to prolong another challenge for the
most prestigious of prizes.
Bayern have not been at their best this
season, with a humbling tumble from
the Bundesliga summit having been
endured, but they boast enough
experience and quality within their ranks
to trouble the Reds.
Klopp’s side are flying, though, in the
Premier League and will fancy their
chances against anybody, particularly on
memorable European nights at Anfield.
Real Madrid were the side to deny
Liverpool a place on the top of the
podium in 2017-18, as they captured a
third successive crown.
Santiago Solari has been charged with
the task of replicating the success
enjoyed by Zinedine Zidane and can now
prepare his side – who are heading to
Abu Dhabi for the Club World Cup – for a
heavyweight encounter with Ajax.
The Blancos’ arch-rivals Barcelona will
hope to have too much for French
opponents Lyon, with club talisman
Messi having returned to devastating
form over recent weeks in the wake of
his Ballon d’Or snub.
The Argentine’s eternal rival, Portuguese
superstar Ronaldo, also missed out on
another Golden Ball, but is eyeing up a
fourth Champions League triumph in as
many years and a sixth of his remarkable
career.
He is now with Juventus and will find
himself back in the familiar surroundings
of the Spanish capital in 2019 when the
Bianconeri take on Atletico Madrid.
Manchester City will be looking for Pep
Guardiola to mastermind a deep run into
the competition, with the Premier
League champions still pursuing a first
Champions League success.
Schalke stand in their way at the next
stage, with that contest set to see Leroy
Sane reunited with his former club.
Tottenham are also set to face German
opponents, with Mauricio Pochettino
having seen his side sneak through a
testing group to land a second round
clash with Bundesliga leaders Borussia
Dortmund – who will have Jadon Sancho
lining up against England team-mates
such as Harry Kane and Dele Alli.
The final game of the last 16 will see
Roma, who made it to the semi-finals last
season, taking on Porto.
The first legs of the eagerly-anticipated
fixtures mentioned above will take place
on February 12/13 and 19/20, with the
return dates pencilled in for two weeks
later. |

The Seagulls were punished after
conceding two first-half goals at the
Amex Stadium that made it two losses
on the bounce for them
Leon Balogun has described Brighton
and Hove Albion's 2-1 defeat to Chelsea
in Sunday's Premier League outing as
early Christmas gifts for the visitors.
Two first-half goals were all Maurizio
Sarri's men needed to grab maximum
points at the Amex Stadium despite a
tensed finish.
Pedro and Eden Hazard fired Chelsea
ahead in the 17th and 33rd minutes
respectively but Solly March's second-half
effort was enough to earn a point for
the hosts.
Editors' Picks
And Balogun who was involved in the
build-up to Chelsea's second goal rued
his side's second consecutive league
defeat.
The Nigerian centre-back who played for
the entire 90 minutes did not win a
single tackle for his team but made four
successful interceptions.
"We could have easily got something
from the game – we feel like we’ve given
them two early Christmas presents,"
Balogun told club website.
“It’s a poor pass from me for the second,
but we reacted to that after the break
and did very well in the second half.
“I think we gave them a really hard time,
and that’s why the disappointment is
there for us.”
The Seagulls are 13th in the Premier
League table and the 30-year-old
believes his team's response at the
closing stages of the encounter can give
them confidence in their league match
against Bournemouth on Saturday.
"The manager was frustrated by the
goals we conceded – they’re more or
less unforced errors, but we can take
encouragement by thinking what have
would happened if it wasn't for those
moments in the game," he added.
“I can’t think of another chance where
they really troubled us, and the manager
just emphasised that we should remain
focused and stay in the game at the
break.
“We even topped that and we were close
to getting something that we deserved.
“It has to give us confidence – we had
them on the edge of getting a draw,
nobody would have complained if we
managed to get a point.” |
