NewSheriff:So poverty is the reason why the average northern girl child is married off before she's ten yrs old? Cos secondary schools in the north cost the same fees as private universities in the south Interesting conclusion you hve drawn up my man.... very insipidiously interesting... |
postmann:You are wrong... the proportion of western women who got an appreciable education before the 20th century is so miniscule as to be nonexistent.... women have always being cast into lesser roles in society and that dampening of their creative potentials does not mean it doesnt or didnt excist.... this is the point am trying to make, everyone regardless of gender deserves equal opportunities to excel, that for me is true feminism or as i prefer to see it.... humanism... Btw my parents are divorced and not for the reasons you are probably speculating in your head... could you pls do me a favour and leave my parents marriage or lack of it out of this discussion. |
joseph1832:Thats why i said.... feminism should be about women having equal opportunities to be all they can be... no gender restriction on what a human can achieve... for me its not bout gender superiority.... or competition.... |
Lezzlie:you dont seem to understand why i what i was saying with my post.... this is what i think true feminism should be about.... just like we have different belief systems within the same Religion... i even stated i would rather it be termed humanism |
postmann:true not so many women as compared to men have won acclaim in the world of imnovation, invention and and science.... but even in this your are helping me make my point.... women historically speaking, have never been given equal footing anf opportunities to aim so high... marie currie was an anormally for her time... |
postmann:not that its any of your business but i was born and raised in the south... and my father was polygamous.... ditto my reapeated use of the term proper traditional African man |
Lezzlie:pls take a sec and go back to my own personal opinion on what feminism should stand for.... |
Lezzlie:Feminism like every other movt in this world has fanatics and zealots... it doesnt change the ultimate aims and goals of that movt.... islam and xtianity have fanatics and zealots.... dkesnt change the original idealogy of said religious movts.... btw... feminism you scorn so much was responsible for woman having things like the right to sufferage and the opportunity to adequate formal education.... would you call these examples satanic too |
Feminism means different things for different people... For me it means aspiring for the chance to attain equal opportunities for both sexes... The removal of societal restraints that consign certain dreams and aspirations to a certain gender or sex... Unfortunately feminism , in the eyes of many of the malefolk has become synonymous with non-submission of women to their men... This thought process while understandable is totally wrong. The going philosophy seems to be that if as a guy you support feminism then you are a sissy, a woman wrapper or an ass kisser.... Only a weak and insecure man requires total submission from his woman to make him feel like he's in charge. Feminism is the only reason many of us guys on Nairaland can proudly brag bout our 'literate' mothers, our 'successful' mothers, aunts, sisters, etc etc Most guys tell you they can't date or marry an uneducated and unenlightened girl without reasoning far ahead enough to realise that the only reason these educated women are available is because of the 'loathed' feminist movement. My family is a perfect case study... My dad though being British, still holds strongly to our African traditional values but there was never a time while i was growing up that my mom wasnt working full time... Never a time when my mom couldnt speak her mind and didnt have an equal say in what went down in our home, and guess what? It never eroded her respect for my dad or vice versa... Even my step mom is richer than my dad and more business oriented too, it never caused an issue that i know of, my father has never demanded submission from his wife/ wives and this is someone who like i stated earlier is a full proper traditional African man... Women may not have the physical strength of men but they can be and are usually smarter... Feminism doesnt literally translate to a woman being able to do all things men can do but it means a woman should be allowed to aspire to the goals men have traditionally reserved for themselves, the right to decide what they want to become or the goals they want to pursue without first considering whether its allowed women by societal norms... In a way i think the problem of feminism is actually its name... Its only human to strive for the equality of both sexes... Feminism should probably be called humanism because equality of the sexes should be a universal human aspiration not just a fight by the female half of the population Feminism doesn't mean anti submission just has submission doesnt mean a woman having to grovel and bow after her man and his ego.... Submission is a product of mutual respect and only weak men should be afraid of a woman who speaks her mind on issues concerning their relationship and basic existential issues... I can only say in closing, there was a time when all men were not considered equal.... And there were people who fought to keep the status quo, they lost. Same way those who fight to keep the status quo on gender inequality would one day be consigned to history books as bitter losers in a cause whose outcome may be delayed but never changed.... |
