The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, on Tuesday hurriedly abandoned President Muhammad Buhari in the United States following his open admonishing of him on Monday. (Middle) Godwin Emefiele A Presidency source told SaharaReporters that Mr. Emefiele asked to see President Buhari and then requested to leave for an “important” meeting in London. The President is said to have granted the request. On Monday, the president had warned his aides against smuggling Nigerian businessmen into meetings during his visit. Later that evening, he openly admonished the CBN governor for smuggling the former Managing Director of Zenith bank, Jim Ovia, into a dinner organized by the US Chamber of Commerce. Presidency sources said the CBN governor’s request to leave Washington DC came as a surprise, as he had not previously informed President Buhari of any other meeting he had to attend, especially one that would deprive the President of a prominent member of his delegation. It is unclear as of the time of publishing this report if Mr. Ovia, who was the beneficiary of Mr. Emefiele’s efforts, has also left the US. Also on Monday, President Buhari took advantage of the meeting with his aides to order the opening of a desk at the presidential villa in Abuja where Nigerians who wished to see him could apply to do so. It is common knowledge that in the preceding administration, wealthy Nigerians paid millions to be allowed to see the President. http://saharareporters.com/2015/07/22/nigerias-central-bank-gov-emefiele-hurriedly-leaves-us-after-pres-buhari-tongue-lashing |

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (Reuters) - Suspected Boko Haram militants burned down houses, including the family home of Nigeria's new army chief, in a village in the northeast of the country on Tuesday, a policeman, military source and witnesses said. At least two people were killed and eight injured in Buratai in Borno state, resident Adamu Talba and the military source said, but Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Baratai, was not present at the time of the attack in the early hours. Boko Haram has waged a deadly campaign to carve out a state adhering to strict Islamic law in Nigeria's northeast for the past six years. After being pushed out of most of the territory they gained earlier this year, the group scattered and returned to attacking soft targets. President Muhammadu Buhari has made ending the insurgency his priority and discussed how to tackle it during his first trip to Washington to meet President Barack Obama. http://mobile.reuters.com/article/idUSKCN0PV2CQ20150721?irpc=932 |

The World Bank has pledged $2.1bn (£1.4bn; €1.9bn) to help rebuild north-eastern parts of Nigeria, wracked by years of Boko Haram militancy, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari says. Mr Buhari was speaking in Washington after talks with World Bank officials. He said priority must be given to rebuilding infrastructure and helping those displaced by the conflict. Mr Buhari has pledged to defeat Boko Haram insurgents who have killed thousands in Nigeria since 2009. More than a million people have also been displaced by the insurgency. On Monday, US President Barack Obama pledged his support for Mr Buhari in the campaign against Boko Haram. The US has committed $5 million (£3.2m; €4.6m) to the fight against the insurgents since the Nigerian leader was elected earlier this year. In a statement released on Tuesday, Mr Buhari urged the World Bank to send a team to Nigeria to assess how to spend the funds. The money is expected be given in the form of a loan which will be interest-free for the first 10 years. BBC Africa editor Richard Hamilton says extreme poverty and neglect in north-eastern Nigeria is thought to have fuelled the rise of Islamic extremism and given Boko Haram broader appeal. Mr Buhari also met representatives of the World Health Organization and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to discuss measures to tackle malaria and polio. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-33617311#?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter |
