The Chairman, Senate Adhoc Committee on Media and Publicity, Mr. Dino Melaye, has defended his open support for Mrs. Toyin Saraki, wife of the Senate President, when she honoured an invitation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. The Senator, representing Kogi West in the National Assembly, said he had no regrets joining Saraki at the EFCC office. Melaye said he went to the EFCC office “as a private investigator and an anti-corruption crusader,” to find out the extent of culpability of his “sister and friend” since she was not told the content of the petition against her. He said he was arrested 14 times in one year by the administration of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan because of his commitment to seeing a better Nigeria He said, “The invitation of Mrs. Toyin Saraki by the EFCC, however, is not a criminal indictment. I will not abandon my friend because of (a) mere EFCC invitation. “I also went there as a private investigator and an anti-corruption crusader to find out the extent of culpability of my sister and friend since she was not told the content of the petition against her before her appearance before the EFCC.” Melaye, in a statement entitled, ‘Stand up for what you believe in regardless of the popularity or acceptance of your belief,’ which was obtained by Saturday PUNCH in Abuja, challenged anyone to controvert his claim that he had never taken any government contract, be it at the local, state or federal level. He said, “I chose to react to the attacks I have received from my brothers, sisters and fellow citizens because I was seen in the headquarters of EFCC with my sister, Mrs. Toyin Saraki. “I will start by saying that my struggle to fight corruption in Nigeria was not an assignment or a paid job. It was borne out of passion and desire to build a new Nigeria where justice, equity and egalitarianism become a new order. “I was arrested 14 times in one year by the administration of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan because I desire a country where my grandchildren (that I may never know) will dwell in a nation where life is already structured for them. “I cannot throw away my sacrifice of being beaten and my clothes torn on the floor of the House of Representatives because of fighting against corruption. I have come too far to compromise my stand on corruption and corrupt persons. “I make bold here to challenge anybody who will controvert the truth that I have never done any government contract, either at the LG, state or federal levels. It is not criminal to do so, but he who must come to equity must come with clean hands. “If my father is invited by the EFCC, I will go there; if a prima facie case is established against him, I will shout for his prosecution. So my great people, I have no regret following my friend and sister to the EFCC. If you are my friend, you are my friend.” |

DUTSE — Senator Abdulaziz Usman Tarabu, representing North-East Senatorial zone escaped lynching at a Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, rally held at Biriniwa in Jigawa state. According to reports, the Senator was attacked by members of his constituency as he attempted to address them. The PDP Jigawa State chapter has been holding rallies in all the three Senatorial zones of the state ahead of the local government election slated for January 18, 2014. At the rally, the youths who had gathered started spontaneous chants of “bamayi, bamayi” which means “we are not in support of you” in Hausa language as the senator attempted to climb the podium to address party faithful. The chants changed to ‘bamaso-bamaso’, meaning “we don’t like you” as the senator continued his climb. As the chants grew louder and turned from mere chants to hauling of pure water sachets and other items, the Senator was forced to withdraw his address and return to his seat. It was also gathered that another Senator, Abdulmumini Hassan Zareku, was also meted a similar treatment by irate youths in Miga Local Government Area of Dutse Emirate Council, a situation which forced him not to address the gathering in the area. The incident took place in Miga, the headquarters of Miga Local Government Area, which comprises seven local government areas where the seven candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were presented to their electorate by Governor Sule Lamido. Immediately the senator mounted the podium to address the crowd, the shouting started. The youths chanted ‘bamaso, kasauka, bakayi, mana komeba’, meaning, “we don’t like you, come down from the podium, you have done nothing for us.” Despite the courage by the senator to ignore them, he had to stop when the shouting became so intense, and was becoming an embarrassment to the personalities at the rally. Reacting to the tensed situation, Governor Lamido expressed disappointment, saying, the behaviour exhibited was contrary to that of Jigawa State citizens who are known to be kind and accommodating. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/12/two-pdp-senators-escape-lynching-rally-jigawa/ |

Lagos lawyer and human rights activists, Mr. Femi Falana, has called on the EkitiState governor, Mr. Kayode Fayemi, to ensure that those responsible for the killing of one Mr. Foluso Ogundare at a political rally in Emure Ekiti, on November 4, were brought to book. He called on the governor to declare zero tolerance for extra-judicial killings, political violence, and thuggery in the state. Falana in a statement, yesterday, said “On November 4, 2013 a peaceful political rally in Emure Ekiti was violently attacked by some armed thugs. In the mayhem visited on the unarmed people at the rally, one Mr. Foluso Ogundare was attacked and severely wounded. “He was rushed to the hospital, where he gave up the ghost. Two days later, I sent a petition to the Inspector- General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar to demand for the immediate arrest and prosecution of all the cowards, who snuffed life out of Mr. Ogundare. Since there are eye witnesses, who were present at the scene where the dastardly act was executed in broad daylight, the Police should quickly conclude investigation into the incident and charge the suspects to court for the criminal offences of conspiracy and murder. “As I did say in my afore-mentioned petition to the Inspector-General of Police, “To stem the tide of political violence in Ekiti State, I am compelled to request you to direct the Ekiti State police command to prosecute all the suspects, as well as the criminals who recently unleashed violence on law abiding citizens at a burial ceremony at Iyin-Ekiti and at a political meeting at Ado-Ekiti. The thugs and their masterminds should not be given the impression that they have immunity from prosecution for unleashing violence on innocent people. “It is sad to note that since 2003, successive governments in EkitiState have treated indicted murderers like sacred cows. Hence, criminals whose hands are soaked in blood have held Ekiti people hostage. From the information at my disposal, all the suspects responsible for the politically motivated killings in EkitiState for the past 10 years have been identified by the Police and the Department of Security Services. Indeed majority of the suspects were charged to the state High Court in Ado Ekiti. But the cases were deliberately programmed to fail leading to the release of the suspected murderers, including those who had admitted their role and involvement in such heinous crimes. “A political chieftain of and his police orderly, who were convicted and jailed for killing two students of the Ikere College of Education were granted pardon and set free in 2009. At about the same time, the suspects, who were standing trial for the gruesome murder of Dr Ayo Daramola and Mr Tunde Omojola were granted bail in questionable circumstances. “Since then the whereabouts of some of the suspects has remained unknown and the cases may soon be struck out for want of diligent prosecution. No government which allows murderers whose hands are soaked with the blood of innocent people to walk free can seriously stop the shedding of the blood of innocent people.” “In the atmosphere of impunity which has gradually returned to Ekitiland, the state government cannot wash off its hands like Pontius Pilate. As the Chief Security Officer of the state, Governor Kayode Fayemi owes it a duty to guarantee the safety of the life and property of every person living in EkitiState. “As a matter of urgency, the governor should declare zero tolerance for extra-judicial killings, political violence, thuggery and other criminal activities. In particular, the state government should collaborate with the Police to prosecute the killers of Foluso Ogundare without any further delay. More importantly, there should be a Committee Against Impunity to ensure the arrest and prosecution of all the suspects indicted for murder and attempted murder in EkitiState from 2003-2013. “It is only by isolating and prosecuting such well known murderers and their sponsors for their iniquitous deeds that politically motivated killings will stop in EkitiState. I, therefore, call on the vigilant people of EkitiState to continue to expose and shame the few murderers and other criminals, who have recently exposed the state to odium, ridicule and embarrassment.” www.vanguardngr.com/2013/11/falana-wants-alleged-killers-citizen-ogundare-prosecuted/ |
JOS— Five suspects have been arrested by the Police in Plateau State in connection with the ritual killing of an 11-year-old girl, whose eyes and tongue had been removed when her corpse was found. Four of those arrested were believed to be the actual killers of the girl, who was on an errand for her grandmother with whom she lived in Fillin-Sukwa area of Jos. The fifth suspect, identified as a dealer in shoes, allegedly contracted the other suspects to get him the human parts for N300,000. A relative quoted the grandmother as saying she sent her granddaughter to buy Masa (a local rice snack) around 7.30a.m., but that she never returned. After waiting for a while, the grandmother went to the Masa seller, who told her that the girl came, but was sent on an errand by one of the suspects. Subsequent efforts to trace the girl failed only for her corp-se to be discovered in an un-completed building, days later. A neighbour confirmed that the girl’s corpse was found last Friday. Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Felicia Anslem confirmed the arrests, saying investigations were on. www.vanguardngr.com/2013/11/5-arrested-suspected-ritual-murder-11-yr-old-girl/ |
