I have read through a number of NL posts relating to Naija autos and can't help but SMH for so many people. It also seems to me that NL is dominated by Lagosians who seem to have this inexplicable obsession for Toyotas.

I have used 3 cars; a Camry 2001, Accord 2004 and Accord 2007. I'm stating categorically here that there's hardly a difference in maintenance costs (or maintenance frequency) between older models of Hondas and Toyotas, provided you subject them to the same stress and strain.

Both models have their merits and demerits so I can't place one above the other. The people I know currently using the Camry Muscle lament as much as we Accord users do. For them, it's either excessive oil consumption, poor AC unit, power steering problem, smoking engine issues and of course - the achilles heel of all older Camry models - poor shock absorbers. The most adored of them, tiny light (which was my first car) had these persistent problems with shocks, engine mounts, fragile linkages, bushings and weak outer components like door handles, power windows, etc.

Using Honda Accord however, I barely worry about engine problems (and truthfully, Accord has a powerful engine), but I worry alot about transmission, power steering, upper and lower arm ball joints, linkages, IACV, hub bearings, brake pads and discs.

Putting them side by side, Toyota vs Accord, based on my experience.

Shocks: Toyota 0 vs 1 Accord.
Other suspension components: Toyota 1 vs 0 Accord
AC: Toyota 1 vs 1 Honda
Engine: Toyota 0 vs 1
Other engine components: Toyota 1 vs 0 Honda
Fuel Economy (asides Corolla): Toyota 1 vs 1 Honda
Power steering: Toyota 1 vs 0 Honda
Electricals: Toyota 1 vs 0 Honda Honda
Interior: Toyota 0 vs 1 Honda
Speed & Balance: Toyota 0 vs 1 Honda
Engine mounts: Toyota 0 vs 1 Honda

Truth:
Maintenance costs depend mostly on
1. Quality of parts purchased
2. Type and frequency of car usage

A neighboour of mine, a Camry user, drives only on Sundays to church, less than 2hrs of driving in a week, which is about half of what I do in a day and I drive 6/7 days a week.

Original KYB shocks cost over 150k for the full set. Rather, we buy shocks like Speedmaster that costs barely 26k for the full set (albeit without springs).

Original ceramic brake pads cost between 12-15k, front only, we'll rather buy Asinco or IKB brake pads for 4k which begins to squeal after a few days.

The tokunbo parts syndrome. I was shocked one day when a parts dealer told me that any installed tokunbo parts that lasts up to 6 months has fulfiled its purpose. Imagine that part alone costs 35k, that's already 70k a year on one item, asides labour and other accessories for the repair.
