A Nigerian chess whiz has been playing the game for more than 58 consecutive hours in Times Square to smash a world record — defeating a lineup of skilled players despite a royal lack of sleep.

Tunde Onakoya, 29, of Lagos, beat the Guinness record for “longest chess marathon” after soaring past the 56 hours and 9-minute mark around 7:45 p.m. Friday in front of hundreds of supporters.

But the chess master didn’t stop there and continued to cushion the new record late into Friday night, with his sights set on the 60-hour mark.

Nigerian chess master, Tunde Onakoya has set the new Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon, surpassing the previous record of 56 hours and 9 minutes.

Please, I'll appreciate having your thoughts on this!

If I were to write my praises of Nigerian people, it may be to wide to read. Therefore, I’ll give you only one example that will summarize some of their profound humane qualities. Mind you, they have many other qualities as well. I was on assignment to a remote part of Nigeria in 2002. I met a kind but destitute old German engineer living in practical misery. I met other Germans in the town who would accept him when he visited, but will make no effort to assist him otherwise. When I enquired how he lived from day to day, I was told that every modest Nigerian in his neighborhood assisted with the little they could. That even included his medical expences. I was awe-stricken. I know of other modest Nigerians who took stranded foreigners into their homes, lodged & fed them, & even gave them a weekly allowance for months, until they could travel back to their countries. They have a heart. They have a Faith also, I have seen nowhere else in the world. May the Good Lord bless them & protect them all. Amen.

Naira abuse: Court grants Cubana Chief Priest N10m bail

The Federal High Court in Lagos State, on Wednesday, granted businessman and socialite, Pascal Okechukwu, popularly known as Cubana Chief Priest, N10m bail with two sureties in like sum.

Earlier, the celebrity bar man pleaded not guilty to tampering and abusing the naira during his trial.

Cubana Chief Priest was arraigned before Justice Kehinde Ogundare on three counts bordering on abuse of naira by allegedly spraying and tampering with the nation’s currency at a social event, contrary to the provisions of the Central Bank Act of 2007.

He was alleged to have sprayed the naira on February 13, 2024, at Eko Hotel.

Cubana Chief Priest was said to have also committed the offences while dancing during a social event.

He was said to have tampered with funds in the denomination of N500 notes issued by the CBN by spraying the same for two hours.

Jennifer Awele Okpuno, the wife of late Nollywood actor, Junior Pope Odonwodo, is reportedly hospitalized following the sudden passing of her husband on Wednesday, April 10.

The news of Junior Pope’s death sent shockwaves through his fans and well-wishers, leaving a void in the hearts of his wife and his three sons.

A video was shared by a Nurse, who works at the hospital and it showed a woman, identified as Jennifer, receiving medical care and support.

According to the Nurse, Jennifer’s health deteriorated due to the death of the 39-year-old Nollywood actor.

It is worth noting to know that Junior Pope lost his life alongside with his other colleagues. The incident occurred as Junior Pope was returning from a movie shoot along the Anam River in Anambra State.
