Twenty-one years after democracy's birth, reasonable is it to expect Africa's most populous nation to have somewhat attained adulthood. Unfortunately, she is stuck in the breastfeeding phase, often wailing for motherly attention which developed countries won't provide. Using David Cameron's popular word, history shows every nation is prone to be "fantastically" selfish. Since our socio-political and economical salvation need to largely come from within, Nigeria's system remains fashioned not to midwife it. Nigeria is not working due to poor quality politics, hence the numerous instabilities and have-nots outnumbering the haves.

Some cerebral, distinguished, well-meaning Nigerians have argued at different times, on different fora, restructuring is the antidote to where we are. No doubt, this would be helpful, as it promises to make the 6 geo-political zones, 36 states more responsible, innovative and productive. But this is not enough! Even when restructuring happens, a lethal cancer is bound to fester, if not treated decisively. Alien to a democratic setting, politics in this clime is controlled by oligarchs, few persons, rather than the people--this order must be upset soonest! They comprise politicians, government officials, wealthy businessmen who work day and night to ensure our political and economic institutions, government policies, bills favor them to the letter, mostly at majority of Nigerians' expense. For instance, inclusion of Nigeria's sovereignty in China loan agreements, House of Representatives investigates this, who benefits most?

Furthermore, political structures in diverse states are literally in their hands. Uncontrolled greed frequently sets in, nudging them to divert millions/billions of naira to their pockets with impunity. Magically, the legislature and judiciary transform from watchdogs to toothless dogs, these oligarchs induce and hold them on the jugular. The honey is too sweet, so carrying this tradition over to a restructured Nigeria is almost inevitable. Today, tens of millions of Nigerians look on powerlessly, despondently, because they can't entirely determine who becomes president, governor, senator, representative, chairman, councillor via the ballot box. Those few men and women know this, invisibly incite violence during elections to perfect their subterfuge and do not care. Poverty, tacky education and health standards, terrorism, continue unabated.

However, to change this narrative, power must return to the masses. In such cases, power is either demanded or taken, not given. Votes of those fishermen in Bayelsa, Delta, Rivers, should count in deciding who governs them and would strictly regulate oil companies that smear their waters. Those homeless families in Borno should be able to elect a grand commander-in-chief of Nigeria's armed forces (GCFR) who would appoint more competent service chiefs to make them feel safe again, and so on. This new dawn would usher in leaders who are more accountable to the people than politicians and risk getting either impeached, recalled or losing reelection when they falter.

Finally, for Nigeria to work, INEC, EFCC, ICPC, national and state assemblies, CCB, CAC, CBN, to mention a few, must become much less susceptible and much more formidable to checkmate selfishness of these few persons bent on feathering their nests, even at the cost of welfare of over a hundred million Nigerians now and posterity.

For instance now Tiktok shares if they were listed would not be a good idea to invest in. If congress/senate decided to ban Toyota from US , congress critters holding on to those stocks would sell before the ban became public. That is illegal.
