PoliticsRe: Kano Mass Wedding: Ganduje To Marry Off 1,520 Women by Ddaji(m): 11:22am On Feb 03, 2017
eyinjuege:
I understand your points, but instead of mass weddings, why not empower the women? Handiwork, skills, those that want to go to school?
If you're going to do any wedding for anyone, that person should have gone through your skills acquisition program, and given some money or materials for start up. I think that's better. If a woman is financially empowered, her children cannot suffer. These women being married off are not youngsters or having new marriages. They're most often divorcees and widows who need food and shelter. If they can fend for themselves and their children, they should not be married off to a man who can barely feed himself and the other wife at home. And truth is the divorce rate is second to non. Nothing stops the men from waking up in 6months time and saying "I divorce you" 3X. And then both go and register again for another round of mass wedding.
This is not a condemnation of their way of life btw, but just looking at the bigger picture. Rather, how can life be made better for ordinary citizens. Public infrastructures may be improving, but can people feed?
thanks for the positive view on the issue.Kano state has board that handle issue of marriage and other matters. They usually train the women and give them money to start up business.
PoliticsRe: Kano Mass Wedding: Ganduje To Marry Off 1,520 Women by Ddaji(m): 7:38am On Feb 03, 2017
Most of the comments above me are from religious and tribals bigots.Nigeria is not one and can never be one, judging measures taken by other society in order to solve social problems as wrong and backward is the greatest hypocrisy in earth. The present administration in kano is one the best in terms of physical development in Nigeria.you can't compare it with some governors in the east that refused to construct even drainage and pay the workers salary. Some state governors spent billion to sponsored cannibal and nobody complaint because that is the priority of their state. Some lauder abroad billions given to them as bail to pay their workers, some are owners of big shopping malls in abuja. The payment of workers salary in kano is up to date, the state has two state university, thousands of students are in abroad under sponsorship of the state. This mass weeding is welcome development and the people of the state are OK with it.please ask your State governor about how he is running your state not kano.bigotry is a big from in nigeria

PoliticsThe North Cannot Be Instigated To War. By Dr.aliyu Tilde by Ddaji(op): 5:45pm On Jan 27, 2017
A letter from the Acting Registrar KSCOE Kafancan refuted that 5 students were ambushed and killed by herdsmen on their way to Gidan Waya campus some days back and wondered why even 'reputable' papers would carry such stories when the college is not even in session. Mr Samuel should not wonder because some people are instigating war in the North. But they will fail woefully.

I think those defeated in Biafra should realize that Gowon's defeat was decisive and final. One Nigeria is here. This attempt at revenge through incitement cannot turn the clock of reality. Meanwhile, do not forget that Gowon is not a herdsman.

I repeat: We northerners can have our challenges, even if instigated or amplified by outsiders. But we are not stupid enough to got to war over them. We will come out stronger, to the shame of enemies who want to see the region in conflagration.

Let these defeated war-mongers visit Plateau today and see how Fulani herds are grazing in Riom and Shendam. Even with a state government that sponsored an agenda of hatred and massacres for 8 years, our eternal resolve for peaceful coexistence could not be broken.

It is through this kind of propaganda that innocent souls in the south are made to believe that there is a rampaging battalion of herdsmen that is killing thousands of Christians in southern-Kaduna and against which the Christians are incited to take up arms.

And they blame government for not doing anything. How can government act on mere propaganda? The present IG went on a fact finding mission in Southern Kaduna two weeks ago and came back telling the media to stop the exaggeration.

It is not the first time. At Agatu, Arase, the former IG, asked to be shown the graves of the 300 Agatians killed by herdsmen. All he could be shown was graves of 3 people! Today, the Agatians have freely allowed Fulani to continue grazing on their land. Shame to the liars and Devils that pray for bloodbirth in the North.

More is awaiting these bad losers. We northerners will come out of the southern-Kaduna crisis stronger. Our people will not suffer war while you smile from 500 km east or 1000 km southwest of Kafanchan. Soon, it will be like it has become in Plateau and Benue. God is on the side of peace lovers. The fiery pastor and his ilk will live in frustration and hell forever.

And take note that these demons and criminals will never spoil the good image of thousands of southerners whom we have come to associate with and love for several decades now. Nobody can tarnish the image of Madame Rose from whom I buy my plumbing materials, or PD from whom I buy my industrial mechanical parts. Not to mention my old friendship with Professor Ezealor in Owerri or Mr. Chidi in Umudike. Vanguard cannot severe these ties no matter its evil efforts.

Neither can it break my nearly 40 years relationship with Prof. Iortsuun, my former Tiv (thief) lecturer from Benue. I missed her when I visited her office in Zaria yesterday. I called her and she told me how much she missed me. Does any southern or eastern newspaper think I will ever take up arms against this northern jewel simply because she is Christian? In the contrary, I am ready to defend her with my blood in appreciation of the exceptional love she showed me over the past four decades as I will defend Serah, Faith, Felicia, Gida, Drambi, etc.

I can fill hundreds of pages with the stories of my Christian friends from Northern and Eastern Nigeria. The dream of someone that he can just instigate war among us while he enjoys his bed in Enugu or Lagos remains just what it is - a dream. When the chips are down, we from the North - Christians and Muslims alike - know that we share a common name that others refer to us with - northerners. We know that in our eyes we all carry that same tag irrespective of our religion. And we are proud of to anwer our father's name. And let us be frank. I am sure they are intelligent enough to know that at the sub-national level, they too have a tag that they carry, with which we northerners refer to them, irrespective of whether we are Christians or Muslims.

Now, I will give a piece of advice to people like Pastor Oyedepo who is advising that the country be divided between Christians and Muslims (forgetting that his village, Omuaran, is in a muslim majority state), Apostate Suleiman, SSCE (yes that is his qualification) and southern newspapers, that they should preach peace and desist from courting violence, for violence can smell its instigator from afar and overtake him wherever he is, no matter his position in society or his detachment from the scene he depicts it.

We once had someone in Nigeria, a highly placed person, a governor in the Second Republic, a SAN, who was referring to Fulani as Tutsis of Nigeria, publicly instigating a genocide against them in the late 1990s. He died with his wish unfulfilled. Instead, Bola Ige, did not have the privilege to die a natural death. Even as the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, the nemesis of violence visited him one evening in his house in Lagos. He was served some bullets by one of his own, not by a Fulani herdsman. And to date, nobody is convicted for the crime. He became a variable to neutralize in the 2003 second tenure algebra of someone, his own kind, not a Tutsi Fulani for that matter.

Moral: Do not wish bloodshed for some people because it will boomerang on you. Apostate Suleman, the coward, can run from the SSS and enjoy the protection of another equally criminal personality. However, he cannot run away from the nemesis of violence when it reckons to visit him one day.

I must confess to the Roses and Ezealors of my life that I write these posts with so much pain and do so only because it is inevitable today. My pen cannot afford the luxury of political correctness under the situation. We can not sit back and allow some people to instigate bloodshed among in the North. We must check them by all means through revealing their machinations and make our people dispel them. The life of a single Christian or Muslim in southern Zaria is so priceless to me as a northerner that I just must protect it with my pen. Please do understand.

Politics2017: S/south, S/west Gulp 52% Of Federal Roads Budget by Ddaji(op): 6:50am On Jan 17, 2017
The South-South and South West region will get N138 billion (equivalent to 51.45 percent) of the federal government total spending of N268 billion on construction and repairs of 171 roads across the nation.

The proposed allocation is N37bn less than the allocation for 108 road projects in 2016, which was pegged at N305bn.

The Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing proposed N434.3bn capital allocation for 2017, an increase of N81 billion from the N353.1bn capital appropriation of 2016.

Analysis of the budget by our reporter revealed that in terms of the projects’ cost in 2017, the South-South will get the highest allocation of N74bn to do 30 projects. The zone which is leading this year was the least in 2016 with only N6.770bn for four projects.

The South West zone is following with N64bn for 26 road projects. The zone which had the lion share of N67bn in the 2016 Appropriation Act had 18 projects which included the Lagos-Ibadan road (N49.4bn), Apapa-Oshodi, Lagos (N5.2bn) and the MMI Airport road (N4bn).

The South East has 23 projects worth N36.3bn. In 2016, the zone had 20 projects worth N29.5bn. However another N96bn was earmarked to pay outstanding debts for construction of roads in Anambra State.

The North Central geopolitical zone has more projects in 2017. The 43 road projects under it have been allocated N47bn. It also had the highest number of 22 projects in 2016 when it got N38.5bn.

For the North-east, its allocation is reduced by N2bn this year as it will get N31bn to do 28 projects. It got N33.1bn for 17 projects in 2016.

The North-west which has the least funding of N15.6bn to do 21 projects this year, got N33bn to do 26 projects in 2016.

Key projects in geopolitical zones

The breakdown of the proposal shows that the key projects in the North Central include the dualization of Obajana junction to Benin road (N9bn); Oju/Loko-Oweto bridge roads (N7bn); Ilorin-Jebba-Mokwa-Bokani road (N3.5bn); dualization of Suleja-Minna road (N2.8bn); and dualization of Abuja-Abaji-Lokoja road (N9bn).

Top of the projects in the North East will be the dualization of Kano-Maiduguri road (N14bn); rehabilitation of Hadejia-Nguru-Gashua-Bayamari road in Jigawa and Yobe states (N2.3bn); construction of bridges destroyed as a result of insurgency (N1.6bn); Tamburawa bridge - protection of exposed piles (N1.5bn), and reconstruction of Sumaila-Falali-Birnin Bako- Bauchi State border road (N1.5bn).

In the North-west, the top projects include the rehabilitation of Sokoto-Tambuwal-Jega-Kontagora-Makera road (N3.2bn); rehabilitation of Zaria-Funtua-Gusau-Sokoto-Birnin Kebbi road (N2.7bn); and the dualization of Kano-Katsina road (N2bn).

Most of the huge projects in the South-west will be in the Lagos axis as they were in 2016. Some of them are the dualization of Lagos-Otta road (N1.7bn); construction of Apakun-Murtala Mohammed International Airport road in Lagos State (N2bn); access road to Apapa/Tincan Port, NNPC depot -Mile2 road (N1.2bn); dualization of Ibadan-Ilorin (N3bn); expansion of Lagos-Shagamu-Ibadan road (N31.5bn), and rehabilitation of Apapa-Oshodi road (N7.8bn).

Other huge projects in the zone include, emergency rehabilitation of Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos (N5.3bn), and rehabilitation of Ikorodu-Shagamu road (N2bn)

In the South South, the major ones include the dualization of Odukpani-Itu-Ikot Ekpene road in Cross River (N3.7bn); rehabilitation of Ikot Ekpene-Aba-Owerri road (N1.2bn); rehabilitation of Calabar-Ugep-Katsina Ala road (N3bn); reconstruction of Benin-Ofosu-Ore-Ajebandele-Shagamu road N5.5bn; construction of Bodo-Bonny road in Rivers State (N9bn); dualisation of Sapele-Ewu road (N4.5bn), and the dualization of Yenegwe road in Bayelsa State (N1.3bn).

For the South East, its major projects will include the rehabilitation of Oba-Nnewi road sections in Anambra and Imo states (N1.1bn); construction of 2nd Niger Bridge phases 2a & 2b in Anambra and Delta states (N12bn); rehabilitation of Enugu-Port Harcourt way (N9bn); rehabilitation of Abakaliki-Afikpo road (N1.2bn) and the rehabilitation of Onitsha-Enugu way (N5bn).
