Leaders such as President Abraham Lincoln played a vital role in fostering a sense of unity and emphasizing the shared values and goals that united Americans. Lincoln's famous Gettysburg Address, delivered in 1863, called for a "new birth of freedom" and emphasized the importance of a united nation.

Additionally, efforts were made to address the underlying causes of the division. The Reconstruction era that followed the war aimed to rebuild the Southern states and address the injustices of slavery. This period, while challenging and marked by social and political conflicts, helped pave the way for progress and eventual reconciliation.

Over time, Americans began to rebuild trust and foster a sense of national identity. Economic development, the expansion of railroads, and the westward movement played a significant role in bringing different regions together and promoting a shared vision of progress and prosperity.

While challenges and divisions have continued to emerge throughout our history, Nigeria will consistently demonstrate its ability to overcome them. So, my friend, even though we faced a painful division during our own Nigerian Civil War, the Nigerian people ultimately will be united once again. It serves as a reminder of our capacity to heal, reconcile, and move forward, guided by the principles that define us.

Igbo don't have any problem with people around them, rather they focus more on things that brings comfort to them and are ready to make friends with other tribes, the youth copers posted to south east will testify to this, they are not the type that treat their visitors bad, rather their hospitality is a unique one, unlike some people or tribe that endangered their visitors. Imagine people that killed 21 youths copers just because of an election of 4years position. Whenever I remember the 2011 election that lead to the killing of 21 copers from the south in the north, I feel bad for this country.

4. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has detained the Receiver Manager appointed by the Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria for Arik Nigeria Limited, Mr Kamilu Omokide, over alleged misappropriation and diversion of about N120bn. It was learnt that the EFCC detained Omokide alongside one Captain Samuel Caulcrick in connection with an alleged illegal sale.


5. A communal crisis in the Oju Local Government Area of Benue State has reportedly claimed 14 persons with property worth millions of naira destroyed.
The dispute reportedly started on Sunday when youths of Ibilla and Oju communities engaged one another in a bloody fight over land.

6. The Nigerian Navy has challenged Niger Delta leader and former agitator, Mujahid Asari Dokubo, to produce the names of officers involved in crude oil theft. Dokubo, had, on Friday, alleged that the bulk cases of oil theft recorded in the oil-rich region were traceable to the Nigerian Army and Navy.


7. The governorship candidate of the Labour Party in Enugu State, Mr Chijioke Edeoga, on Friday, told the election petition tribunal sitting in Enugu that he would call 36 witnesses to testify against Governor Peter Mbah of the Peoples Democratic Party to prove his alleged certificate forgery.

8. Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP’s) governorship candidate of Kogi State, Dino Melaye, on Friday, told the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) that his claims of electoral infractions in Sokoto, Benue, Borno and Lagos States during the February 25 election were based on the information he received from agents of his party on the field.

9. Justice Hamza Muazu of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Maitama, on Friday ordered the Director General of the Department of the State Security Services (SSS) and the agency to grant the suspended Governor of the Central Bank (CBN), Godwin Emefiele unhindered access to his lawyers and family members. The order was sequel to an oral application by Emefiele’s counsel, Joseph Daudu.

10. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Friday gave its backing to the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN’s) exchange rate unification policy. The policy, which collapsed all exchange rates into the Investors and Exporters (I&E) window, allows market forces to determine exchange rates.

The House of Representatives, on Thursday, unanimously voted against a motion seeking to make the Federal Government address the issues causing Nigerian professionals to migrate to other countries en masse, in search of greener pastures.

A new member of the House, Philip Agbese, had moved a motion titled ‘Need to Declare Emigration of Young Nigerians Abroad A.K.A Japa Syndrome a National Emergency,’ urging the government to “convene a national summit with key stakeholders to effectively address the ‘Japa Syndrome.’


The phenomenon is popularly known as ‘Japa,’ a Yoruba word that simply means to go away from a problem or trouble.

Agbese also prayed the House to “declare a state of Emergency on the factors that predispose young Nigerians to give up on Nigeria in preference for other nations.”

The lawmaker cited statistics from the Nigerian Economic Summit, which says a growing number of young Nigerians are relocating abroad. He also said recent reports by the African Polling Institute indicate that 69 per cent of young people would opt to relocate abroad if given the chance or if the opportunity presents itself.

He added that there is a 40 per cent increase in the number of young Nigerians leaving the nation, compared to the number captured in 2019, as the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs reported that international emigration from Nigeria in 2020 total 1.7million, which is a substantial increase from 990,000 in 2010.

Agbese said, “The House is concerned that the growing statistics of young Nigerians leaving Nigeria and securing permanent residence in the United Kingdom, the United States of America and Canada portends a grave danger for our nation in many ways from economic to intellectual and social aspects.

“The House is also concerned that the Nigerian population is made of two-thirds of persons under the age of 30 and a good number of these persons are already afflicted with what today is acceptably referred to as the ‘Japa Syndrome,’ as estimates indicate a staggering tens of thousands have relocated to the USA, Canada, South Africa and, even, Gambia over the last two years;

“The House is worried that the eagerness to migrate to countries that offer hope seems to have a compelling influence. The House is also worried that those leaving Nigeria are not just the poor but middle class who possess skills/workforce, including bankers, lecturers, health care practitioners, doctors, nurses, and trained manpower, all of whom were trained in Nigeria and emigrating at a time when their services are needed to build a strong and vibrant economy in Nigeria.

“The House is disturbed that if this scenario continues with our able minds, brains and skilled personnel leaving, Nigeria may fall into a grave crisis in our critical sectors from education to healthcare, thereby making a bad situation worse.”

The lawmaker pointed out that the young population remains one of our greatest assets. “Though the prospects of a growing Nigerians in the Diaspora could be beneficial in a way, it should not be at the expense of our needed manpower,” he added, stressing that it bothers on national pride “when our young bright minds leave the country in droves, conveying an impression that ‘Nigeria is a sinking ship that everyone is rushing to get out of.’”

Agbese also stated that life-changing decisions, whether to stay in one’s country or emigrate, should not be anchored on challenges ranging from insecurity to poor health sector, poor educational system and poor economy, among others.

However, after a ranking member of the House, Dennis Idahosa, seconded the motion, another ranking member, Sada Soli, raised a constitutional point of order to say that the motion would infringe on the fundamental rights of Nigerians if adopted by the chamber.

Soli said, “Chapter 4 of the Constitution is talking about the fundamental rights; and go to Section 35 talking about the personal liberty of an individual. This motion, as it is, looks nationalistic but it contravenes the provisions of the Constitution.

“It is the liberty of a Nigerian if he is qualified and he is normal, and he has all the granted right of movement (to) anywhere he wants. It is the right of a Nigerian if he has the right qualifications, to go anywhere to source for a living. The Constitution of Nigeria allows even dual citizenship, talk less of moving somewhere to earn a living. If we allow this motion on this floor, it contravenes the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Opposing Soli, another ranking member of the House, Ahmad Jaha, argued that the motion was more about the factors causing mass exodus from Nigeria and not a restriction of exit from the country. He urged the lawmakers to “be mindful of the prayers of the motion before killing it.”

Jaha partly said, “The mover of the motion is not praying that everybody should be stopped from going abroad. We should take this into consideration. But it is advising because we have to tell each other the truth; the factors enumerated, which are the actual factors or reasons behind people leaving this country to seek greener pastures somewhere (else).

“What he is trying to say in a nutshell is that the international community has identified the reasons why Nigerians are compelled to go outside the country. What he is saying now is ‘let there be a national summit so that all these factors will be given priority, so that at the end of the day Nigerians will be discouraged from going abroad. So, as far as I am concerned, this motion is apt and it should be considered.”

The immediate past Deputy Speaker of the House, Ahmed Wase, said “As good as the motion may be, first the fundamental issue raised in the Constitution; no law, including our motions and bills…if you go to Section 1(3) of the Constitution, it says any law that is inconsistent with the Constitution to the extent of that inconsistency is best null and void. So, as far as I am concerned, we have to rule on the point of order (raised by Soli) before we can proceed, otherwise, we will be contributing to the contravention of our own constitution.”

When the Speaker eventually put adoption of the motion to voice vote, the lawmakers unanimously voted against it.

Civil servants in Benue will soon heave a sigh of relief, as Gov. Hyacinth Alia has assured them of payment of salaries by 25th of every month, beginning from June.
Alia gave the assurance during his Democracy Day broadcast on Monday in Makurdi.

“Indeed, as from 25th of this month, civil servants should start expecting alerts of their payments.

“Good people of Benue, we are aware of your sufferings and hardships, especially civil servants and retirees, due to non-payment of salaries, pensions and gratuities.

“We call for your patience and understanding, as we are working hard to address these problems,” Alia said.

He also assured non-indigenes residing in the state that his government was not only for Benue indigenes, saying that all legitimate residents were considered as Benue people and would always be treated fairly and with respect and decorum.

“We will not shy away from taking those decisions that may look harsh but have become the foundations on which the peaceful and prosperous Benue of our dreams will be built.

“I call on our people not to despair but to keep hope alive, because a new Benue is possible, not through any other means but with all hands being on deck,” he said.

In response to the recent events involving Godwin Emefiele and Femi Fani-Kayode, it is important for me to provide a balanced and very neutral perspective on their actions and acknowledge both their achievements and criticisms. While some of una go dey express dissatisfaction with Emefiele's monetary policies and the impact they had on the economy, e dey important say una recognize his efforts in implementing reforms and his contribution to the financial sector.
Emefiele's suspension as the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria indicates that investigations are underway regarding the financial sector's reforms. This move by the President demonstrates the commitment to accountability and transparency in governance. It is important for the investigation to proceed independently and thoroughly to ensure a fair and just conclusion (That doesn't still mean I support PBAT. Just trying to be very neutral).
On the other hand, Femi Fani-Kayode's curses and mocking remarks directed at Emefiele may be seen as an inappropriate response. He doesn't know that is essential to maintain respect and decency when discussing public figures and their actions, regardless of personal disagreements or criticisms, or what?

The immediate former Minister for Women Affairs and Social Development, Pauline Tallen, is currently in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, over allegations of money laundering.

Sources privy to the development confirmed to our correspondent that Tallen was quizzed by operatives of the EFCC at its Zonal Headquarters, in Wuse, Abuja.

Though details of the allegations against the ex-minister were sketchy, a source familiar with the case told The PUNCH that it bordered on corrupt enrichment to the tune of N2billion
“The ex-mnister arrived at our Abuja Zonal Command (not the headquarters), on invitation, at about 12 pm, but she’s still being grilled by investigators of the commission as at 8:30 pm.

“She’s being investigated for alleged misappropriation of funds and corrupt enrichment to the tune of N2billion, and part of the money was allegedly diverted from the African First Lady Peace Mission Project.”
Spokesperson for the commission, Wilson Uwujaren, could not be reached as of press time.
