PoliticsAtiku Alleges Plots To Rig Election Results Amidst INEC Server Glitch I by Debater(op): 3:51pm On Feb 26, 2023
Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has asked the National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, to instruct the collation officers for yesterday’s election to upload the results from the polling units to the INEC server immediately.

Atiku says that this has become necessary to checkmate some governors who are trying to compromise the results at the local government collation level.

“It will be a disservice to Nigerians and a negation to democracy for anyone to subvert the will of the people as freely expressed in their votes of yesterday,” Atiku said.

He called on Nigerians to be calm but vigilant to ensure that anti-democratic elements who are masquerading as progressives do not steal their mandate.

And in what is already turning out to be a nail-biting race in the 2023 Nigerian presidential elections, early results from polling units and exit polls indicate that Atiku Abubakar is projected to become the first candidate to meet the mandatory 25% requirement of votes cast in at least 24 states.

According to the latest projections, Atiku is also set to exceed expectations in at least 10 states, where he is projected to garner over 40% of the votes cast.

Meanwhile, the PDP presidential candidate has expressed gratitude to the Nigerian people for their support so far and pledged to continue to work hard to earn their trust and confidence.

“We are humbled and honoured by the early projections, which indicate that the Nigerian people have seen in Atiku Abubakar the kind of leader that they want to lead them into a brighter future”.

While it is still too early to predict the final outcome of the elections, Atiku Abubakar’s early success has certainly put him in a strong position as the race enters its final stages.

“From the current figures that are available, Atiku is winning in many states in the 6 geo-political zones. We urge our members and party agents to remain steadfast and watchful”.

Paul Ibe

PoliticsINEC Uploads 11% Of Results In 24 Hours As Fuzzy, Illegible Sheets Populate Irev by Debater(op): 11:40am On Feb 26, 2023
As anxiety grows among Nigerians on the outcome of Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has only uploaded 11 per cent of results from polling units across the country on its portal.

Peoples Gazette also observed that the platform is riddled with unclear result sheets, which could undercut any meaningful use of a system that INEC said was designed to increase transparency in the nation’s elections.

Nearly a full day after polls closed and results were announced at polling centres across the country, the electoral umpire only had 20,031 uploaded on the INEC Results Viewing Portal as of 8:04 a.m. This represents only about 11.3 per cent of the 176,846 designated polling units nationwide.

The delay in uploading and accessing the portal raised concerns among Nigerians on Saturday, hours after votes were counted at various polling units, as many feared the results could be altered afterwards.

Checks by The Gazette showed that some of the results sheets on the portal were either not neatly written or not properly uploaded, while some sheets were completely blank. An official told attributed the problems to the poor quality of BVAS machines supplied to INEC and distributed to polling agents nationwide.

In some states, however, some of the results uploaded in the portal are clear. Ekiti and Kano appear to be the states with better BVAS devices based on the high-quality sheets uploaded from their polling units.

For some Nigerians, it has also been challenging to view results on the 2022 Electoral Law-backed portal, which has raised the hope of many in the credibility of polls.

In a tweet, Yiaga Africa, a civil society organisation, also expressed concerns about the delay in results uploading at 7:00 p.m., four hours after the polls.

“Yiaga Africa is deeply concerned with the delay in uploading polling unit results for the presidential election on the INEC Election Result Portal. As at 7:00 p.m. on election day, no result was uploaded after voting & counting ended in several polling units,” the organisation wrote.

However, the spokesperson for INEC, Festus Okoye, did not immediately return the request seeking comments on the delay in results upload after several hours.

The Gazette had also reported that the portal suffered an outage during and after the polls. INEC did not immediately say whether or not the collapse would be investigated for possible outside interference.

PoliticsTop INEC Consultant Says Tinubu Planned $170million Bribe To Electoral Officials by Debater(op): 9:20am On Feb 26, 2023
In firm audio, top INEC consultant says Tinubu planned $170 million bribe to electoral officers nationwide

“Asiwaju is giving INEC $170 million,” the contractor said in the audio obtained by Peoples Gazette this week. “We will share it around; everybody will do the bidding.”

As top consultant of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Olatubosun Adeniyi Kuku, has been caught on tape revealing that Bola Tinubu, the flag bearer of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), would offer $170 million to the commission’s officials to manipulate the results of the presidential elections across Nigeria.

“Asiwaju is giving INEC $170 million,” Mr Kuku, who described himself as the number one consultant for the commission, told an official in the audio obtained by Peoples Gazette this week. “We will share it around; everybody will do the bidding.”

Among several other midsize businesses, Mr Kuku was identified by The Gazette as the owner of Winning Keys Consult Ltd., located at 9, Usan Street, Durumi, Abuja, which claimed to have helped candidates win elective positions.

Mr Kuku, who said he visited Mr Tinubu when the former Lagos governor promised to bribe the electoral officials, disclosed that he had received N8 billion worth of election-related contracts from the commission.

“Last 2019, it is N7.8 billion the contract they gave me. Ask him who I am. They call me the Hembe Lembe of INEC. That’s what I do,” the consultant said.

In interviews, Mr Kuku repeatedly said he was not the one on the tape.

“It is not me,” the said by telephone on Friday morning. However, after The Gazette told him the voice was authenticated to be his, Mr Kuku abruptly hung up.

When The Gazette made another attempt to reach Mr Kuku shortly after his initial denial, he quickly said in Yoruba that the audio was recorded long ago and wondered why it could cause any troubles now. He failed to elaborate when pressed.

Whereas it could not be ascertained when or where the meeting Mr Kuku said he had with Mr Tinubu took place, his position as one of INEC’s biggest consultants was confirmed by The Gazette. INEC consultants have long been known to exploit their access to the electrical office towards personal inurement.

Yet, the electoral office strongly pushed back and summarily disowned Mr Kuku when asked for comments about the tape, which a pro-democracy activist described as “beyond disturbing.”

“The INEC chairman and national commissioners I know cannot accept money from any contestants,” spokesperson Rotimi Oyekanmi told The Gazette Friday afternoon.

“The processes that have been put in place have assured that no single person or any group of persons at all can influence the outcome of the presidential election in Nigeria,” the INEC spokesman added.

An INEC official said Mr Kuku’s status as a consultant with the agency would be placed under immediate review.

Bayo Onanuga, the APC Presidential Campaign Council spokesman, did not immediately respond to The Gazette’s request seeking his comments on the audio.

But Mr Tinubu has strongly denied all charges of corrupt practices or any attempts to compromise existing democratic processes. He was among the presidential candidates who signed a peace and fair pact in the weeks and days leading to today’s presidential election, saying it was only a continuation of his pro-democracy activity that peaked during the 1990s military junta.

Still, the candidacy of Mr Tinubu, a top contender in the presidential race being a choice of the ruling party and a key ally of President Muhammdu Buhari, has over time been tainted with age falsification, ill health, corruption and drug dealing allegations.

Ahead of the party’s presidential primary elections in June 2022, sources told this outlet that Mr Tinubu offered delegates bribes to secure their votes as the APC flag bearer.

The delegates confirmed to The Gazette that the APC flagbearer induced Ogun delegates with $25,000 and Adamawa $10,000.

Voting rights activist Greg Adesuwa said Mr Kuku’s disclosure about what he did with Mr Tinubu was not entirely new to Nigerian elections, which have for decades been characterised by violence, ballot box stuffing and outright rigging often linked to candidates and their political agents.

“This INEC contractor said Tiinubu was looking to bribe officials to the humongous amount mentioned, that is beyond disturbing,” Mr Adesuwa told The Gazette. “I hope the security agencies will work to investigate the man’s claim and hold all his co-conspirators to justice in this country.”

Mr Adesuwa said Nigerian politicians should move beyond seeing election as a violent and corrupt process and instead focus on polishing their ideas to make them sellable to the masses.

On Friday, the police in Rivers arrested a PDP lawmaker with about $500,000 cash that officers said was designated as bribery for electoral and security officers to compromise the elections in the state. The main opposition party denied any links to the lawmaker’s conduct.

PoliticsSenior Lawyers Condemn Buhari’s Open Display Of Ballot Paper by Debater(op): 8:37am On Feb 26, 2023
Some lawyers on Saturday faulted the open display of ballot papers by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) and the Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, after casting their votes for their preferred candidates.

They stated that though it was wrong for the President and the governor to openly engage in such an act, it would not affect the election results.

The President whose second term ends on May 29, 2023, voted in Daura, Katsina State, during the presidential and National Assembly elections.

He displayed the ballot paper to show he voted for his party; the All Progressives Congress’ presidential candidate.

Also, Ortom was said to have openly displayed his ballot paper to show that he cast his vote for the Labour Party presidential candidate.

One of the lawyers, Mr Babatunde Fashanu, SAN, said that the President’s act was wrong because the exercise was secret balloting.

Fashanu said, “It’s a secret balloting, you are supposed to go there, do your voting in secret and drop the paper and nobody is supposed to see who you voted for.’

This is contained in a statement by the Head, Public Relations Division, FCT, DRTS, Kalu Emetu, on Friday in Abuja.

He added that the officers were to manage the traffic in every part of the FCT to ensure free movement of electoral materials as well as those on essential duties.

Mr Emetu added that the officers were to cover nine sectorial areas of the territory, including Abaji/Rubochi, Karshi/Karu; Kwali, Kuje, Gwagwalada, Dutse/Bwari, Kabusa and Zuba/Dei Dei sectors.

He said each of the sectors is to be manned by 25 officers to enforce traffic restrictions during the period of the elections, and every sector is to operate with two Hilux vehicles.

PoliticsI’ll Whip Tinubu Into Line If He Derails As President: Wife by Debater(op): 7:34pm On Feb 22, 2023
Remi Tinubu, the wife of the APC presidential flag bearer Bola Tinubu, has promised to whip her husband into line should he “derail” after becoming the president.

“We will not disappoint you. Asiwaju will not derail after becoming president. You can count on me to bring him back to line should he derail,” Mrs Tinubu, a senator, promised.

The former Lagos first lady said this on Tuesday at the grand finale of the APC presidential campaign rally at the Teslim Balogun stadium.

“We are now at a critical stage of our campaign. This is our grand finale. God is still faithful. Asiwaju can only become our next president if you go out and vote for him on Saturday,” she appealed to APC members and supporters at the stadium.

Mrs Tinubu added, “You know we have been consistent for the past 23 years, and we are not going to disappoint you. Asiwaju is not running because there is an opportunity for power. He is running because he sees a need he wants to meet.”

Meanwhile, Mr Tinubu has praised President Muhammadu Buhari for supporting his presidential ambition ahead of Saturday’s race.

“Thank you, Mr President, for all you have done. The primaries came; I contested and won. You congratulated me. You didn’t ask them to reverse it based on my religion. You didn’t ask them to change it because I am not from your village in Daura,” stated the APC presidential standard-bearer.

He added, “After winning the party’s primaries, I came to you to choose a running mate for me. You said no, I should go and search by myself that I am intelligent and experienced enough to choose the right person. Then, I brought Kasim Shetima to you. You encouraged me. Thank you, Mr President.”

He also praised the president, who “just returned to the country yesterday, and you promised to be here today, and you are here. You never changed your promise. I want to say thank you, join me to say thank you.”

PoliticsGoodluck Jonathan Preaches Peaceful Elections Ahead Of Presidential Poll by Debater(op): 6:29pm On Feb 22, 2023
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Nigerians to be patriotic and peaceful and display true sportsmanship as they exercise their civic rights on February 25 and March 11.

Mr Jonathan said this in a message to Nigerians released by his special adviser Ikechukwu Eze in Abuja on Tuesday.

He said Nigerians must not allow elections to be a source of violence and anarchy.

“We must desist from the temptation of yielding to those desirous of making our communities and states theatres of conflicts for their selfish ends. Let us realise that the primary purpose of democracy is to uphold the freedom and dignity of citizens and deploy the instruments of governance toward advancing and improving the well-being of our people,” the former Nigerian president explained.

Mr Jonathan urged Nigerians to “consolidate the gains we have recorded in our democracy in the last two decades by ensuring that the elections are peaceful, just, and fair,” appealing to politicians to eschew hatred and violence, “be circumspect in their actions and work towards consolidating the nation’s democracy.”

Mr Jonathan, who said that the future belongs to the youth, advised them not to allow themselves to be used as agents of destruction and violence, saying Nigeria is yours to build.

“This election provides you with the opportunity to be key partners in the nation-building process by electing leaders of your choice. Those you can hold to account, those you trust to defend your future and guarantee unity, peace, and prosperity in our great country,” the former president stressed.

According to him, the 2023 elections mean so much to all Nigerians, describing it as a moment of truth and courage.

“Democracy has put our fate in our hands. It has given us power, the power to make the right choices, determine our future, and shape our destiny,” he stated.

PoliticsGov. Abiodun Distributes Old Notes To Supporters Amidst Allegations Of Storage by Debater(op): 6:53pm On Feb 20, 2023
Governor Dapo Abiodun has begun the distribution of old naira notes to his supporters in Ogun State, in an effort to garner more public support for the fast-approaching general election, amidst allegations that he and other politicians had stocked up notes to induce voters.

In a video seen by Peoples Gazette on Sunday, agents of Mr Abiodun could be seen sharing the old notes in envelopes branded with the governor’s picture, convincing the supporters that the notes remain legal tenders contrary to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) policy.

“These notes remain legal tender, the governor will come back for an enforcement if banks reject them,” his agent told supporters who tried to protest the validity of the notes.

Mr Abiodun alongside his Lagos and Kaduna counterparts and several other state governors have maintained an undaunting opposition to the directive of the presidency and the CBN on the validity of old notes.

PoliticsN3 Billion Fraud: Yahaya Bello’s Nephew Granted Bail, Wife Remains At Large by Debater(op): 6:43pm On Feb 20, 2023
The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court admitted Ali Bello, Governor Yahaya Bello’s nephew, and three others to N500 million bail each in an alleged N3 billion fraud trial.

Kogi first lady Rashida Bello was said to be at large.

According to Justice Obiora Egwuatu’s ruling, the charges against the defendants are bailable.

Mr Egwuatu also said the bail was to enable defendants charged with an offence to prepare adequately for their trial.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had, on February 8, arraigned Bello alongside Abba Adauda, Yakubu Siyaka Adabenege and Iyadai Sadat on an 18-count criminal charge.

They were arraigned on an 18-count charge of money laundering and misappropriation of about N3 billion.

Delivering the ruling in the application, Mr Egwuatu, who said granting of bail was at the court’s discretion, said he was inclined to admit the defendants to bail.

He said the sureties should be residents in Abuja, with identifiable addresses and owned landed property worth N500 million within the court’s jurisdiction.

The judge added that the original title documents of the property must be deposited with the court’s registrar, as well as evidence of tax payment for three years running from 2020 to 2022.

He also held that the defendants were to deposit their international passports with the court and could only travel after due permission.

He subsequently adjourned the matter until April 16 for trial to begin.

The Afenifere National Youth Council has vowed to support the presidential candidate of Labour Party, Peter Obi, to become the President in the February 25 election.

The National President of the council, Eniola Ojajuni, on Sunday, said this in Lagos.

Ojajuni disclosed that Obi had support of the group because of his records while he was governor of Anambra State.

“We are here to endorse the candidate of the LP, Obi officially as the sole candidate for the Southwest youth wing. It took us almost three months to reach the conclusions amongst 147 youth groups in Yoruba land, and today, we officially announced Obi and his running mate, Ahmed Datti, as our sole candidate for the presidential election on Saturday.

“Before we endorsed him, Obi assured us that the first thing he would do is to restructure the country.”

“We believe that the election will hold, and it will be free and fair and the youths in the SW are ready to vote obi. Our target is to give him five million votes.”

He implored Yoruba residents across the country to elect Obi, noting it is time for the South-East to become the president.

“The reason we endorsed Obi is because the Yoruba has had his shot in the presidency through former President Olusegun Obasanjo, likewise former President Goodluck Jonathan who is from the South South. Our current president Muhammadu Buhari is from the North. It’s the turn of the Southeast to produce the presidency, for equity and justice,” he said.

With the launch of the fifth generation (5G) network in Nigeria first by MTN Nigeria and Mafab Communication Limited, LUCAS AJANAKU explores the opportunities the technology has to offer and as Airtel Nigeria laces up its spike shoes to join the race.
After a long wait, the 5G network was finally launched in the country in August, last year in line with the information memorandum (IM) prepared by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) preparatory to the auction of the two lots of 100megahertz (Mhz) frequencies in the 3.5Gigahertz (GHz) spectrum (C-Band) dedicated for the deployment of the network in 2021.

5G is the new global wireless standard after 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G networks. 5G enables a new network that can connect virtually everyone and everything, including machines, objects, and devices. Over time, 5G technology will improve the way we live and work.

Director, Technical Standards and Network Integrity at NCC, Bako Wakil, said there are different angles to define a 5G network. He said it is a new global wireless standard after 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G networks that enable a new kind of network that is designed to connect virtually everyone and everything together.

According to him, it is meant to deliver higher multi-Gbps peak data speeds, at ultra-low latency, with more reliability, massive network capacity, increased availability, and a more uniform user experience to more users.

Jacinda Ardern has revealed she will resign as the prime minister of New Zealand in a shocking announcement on Thursday.

Ardern also confirmed this saying she has not had “enough in the tank to do it” as the October national election approaches.

She made the revelation at the party’s first caucus meeting of the year, according to NBC news.

Her term as prime minister will wrap up no later than 7 February but she will continue as an MP until the election this year.

“I am human, politicians are human. We give all that we can for as long as we can. And then it’s time. And for me, it’s time,” she said.

Ardern said she had reflected over the summer break on whether she had the energy to continue in the role, and had concluded she did not.

In 2017, Ardern became the world’s youngest female head of government when she was elected prime minister at the age of 37.

She has led New Zealand through the Covid-19 pandemic, and a series of disasters including the terrorist attack on two mosques in Christchurch, and the White Island volcanic eruption.

“This has been the most fulfilling five and a half years of my life. But it’s also had its challenges – among an agenda focused on housing, child poverty and climate change, we encountered a … domestic terror event, a major natural disaster, a global pandemic, and an economic crisis,” she said.

PoliticsWhy INEC Must Make Elections Inclusive — Albino Foundation by Debater(op): 6:35pm On Jan 20, 2023
The Chief Executive Officer and Founder of The Albino Foundation, Jake Epelle, on Friday said that the Independent National Electoral Commission had no reason not to make the forthcoming elections inclusive.

Epelle made this known at a one-day capacity building workshop on inclusive media reportage for the 2023 general election in Abuja.

He spoke against the backdrop of the foundation’s plan to launch an app or data store that would contain the data of eligible persons with disabilities, who would be voting in the 2023 elections.

According to the CEO, the data which is related to the electoral process will guide INEC on where to deploy resources on Election Day.

“We are also launching an app in which the media can use in its reportage. All of these would be formally launched. We are waiting for INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu to give us a date on when it will be launched because this new project is related to the electoral process.

“We have a golden opportunity driven by science. Now we have the data. It is not as comprehensive for all the eligible voters in the country but it is a step in the right direction.

“Now, INEC has no reason not to make this forthcoming election inclusive because we are telling them that these are the number of PWDs and this is where to deploy the resources. The report that we are giving to INEC is not only about numbers, but we are telling them where they will go and drop all the needed resources.”

Explaining why PWDs do not participate in the electoral process, Epelle said, “The issues around PWDs not participating in the electoral process is voter apathy. They are not just interested in getting involved because they do not know the provisions that are available for them to participate effectively and they do not know the process and procedures to follow to participate in the electoral process.”

The CEO however appealed to journalists to help deeply report and highlight issues affecting PWDs which, he said, should continually be in the news “so that we can get policy makers and international partners aware of the main challenges we are trying to solve as an organisation.”
