PoliticsGovernor Mbah Declares End To Sit-At-Home In Enugu, Begs For Nnamdi Kanu Release by Debater(op): 7:55pm On Jun 01, 2023
Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in a bid to heal the country.

Mbah made the appeal on Thursday while listing out the decisions reached at the end of his first security council meeting with the heads of all the security agencies at the Government House, Enugu.

He said, “I call on our newly sworn-in president, President Bola Tinubu, to consciously work towards the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. We believe that his release will expedite the healing process Nigeria needs at this time.

“It will also be a pointer to his administration’s extension of brotherly hands of fellowship to Ndigbo,”
he said.

On the every Monday sit-at-home, the governor declared that effective from Monday, June 6, 2023, there would be no such restrictions, adding that such orders were restricting creativity, entrepreneurship, and productivity in the state.

Mbah, however, expressed his government’s readiness “to engage in dialogue with people, who have genuine grievances towards bringing lasting peace and security to Enugu State.”

At the meeting, which also had the deputy governor, Mr Ifeanyi Ossai, in attendance, the governor reminded the people of Enugu that he had hit the ground running on the day of his inauguration by signing three Executive Orders for the good governance of the state, including Executive Order 002 for the removal of “Unauthorised Street Barriers Across the State Within 100 Days”.

He said, “There is no time to waste. The clock has started ticking on the mandate you gave me and the deliverables I promised,” he reiterated.

“A time comes in the lives of a people when they must decide whether they genuinely want to move forward or remain stuck with the conditions of their underdevelopment.
“The creativity and sense of industry of Ndi Igbo are remarkable. Our DNA is wired with commercial and entrepreneurial prowess.

“If this is what we are known by, then it becomes inconsistent with reality that the spirit of entrepreneurship, commerce and creativity are killed every Monday in our land. Our restless spirit of industry abhors laxity and indolence.

“The idea behind sitting at home on Monday, the first working and business day of the week, is abominable and antithetical to greatness and the spirit of the industry we profess to have inherited from our forebears. This cannot be us. Tufiakwa (God forbid). It does colossal damage to us,” he further added.

Mbah reminded the people of the direct connection between the lofty promises he made to them and the vibrancy of commerce in the state.

“For us to transit from a public service economy to a private sector-driven one, we must free our markets from the shackles of restriction to commerce. If indeed we aspire and anticipate an influx of private sector practitioners and investors in Enugu State, we must know that this will not happen where the perception of us is that of unproductive people.

“Therefore, those that strike on Mondays, putting restrictions in the way of our Igbo spirit of creativity, cannot be our true representatives. In fact, they kill our spirit.
“We know that our land is a fertile ground for commerce. However, businesses, entrepreneurship and commerce require a vibrant workforce and big markets where they can flourish and make money.

“To this end, therefore, from Monday, June 6, 2023, there will be no observance of any sit-at-home in all nooks and crannies of Enugu State.

“Government will enforce this with all the powers at its disposal.

“My charge to all of you – market men and women, the corporate world, industries, schools, civil servants, and all strata of workers in Enugu State – is for us to take back our sense of industry, pride of place and re-enact our glorious past.

“By heeding this call, you would have set us on the path of actualising our mandate,” he stated.

PoliticsBREAKING: US To Impose Visa Ban On Nigerians Undermining Democracy by Debater(op): 11:59pm On May 15, 2023
The United States Government has said it had taken steps to impose visa restrictions on specific individuals in Nigeria for undermining the democratic process during Nigeria’s 2023 elections cycle.

This was made known in a statement by the Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, on Monday, published on the website of the US government.

“Today, I am announcing that we have taken steps to impose visa restrictions on specific individuals in Nigeria for undermining the democratic process during Nigeria’s 2023 elections cycle.”

While noting that, “the United States is committed to supporting and advancing democracy in Nigeria and around the world,” Blinken added that the visa restrictions “are specific to certain individuals and are not directed at the Nigerian people or the government of Nigeria as a whole.”

Blinken added, “Under Section 212(a)(3)C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, these individuals will be subject to restrictions on visas to the United States under a policy covering those believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, undermining democracy.”

However, as of the time of filing this report, no name of any individual has been published.

“These individuals have been involved in intimidation of voters through threats and physical violence, the manipulation of vote results, and other activity that undermines Nigeria’s democratic process.”

The US government disclosed the decision to take steps to impose visa restrictions reflects the continued commitment of the United States to support Nigerian aspirations to strengthen democracy and the rule of law.

PoliticsTaraba: Governor Ishaku Denies ₦‎2 Billion Take-Home Vehicles, Opposition Kicks by Debater(op): 6:58am On May 15, 2023
The Special Adviser to Taraba State Governor Darius Ishaku on Media and Publicity, Bala Dan-Abu, on Sunday said report that N2bn had been approved for the purchase of luxury vehicles for the governor, his deputy, and their wives was untrue.

He described the report that the State Executive Council approved the money as just the imagination of social media writers.”

Dan-Abu said,”We don’t want the traditional media to give credence to it.

“There is nothing to it. The story is just the imagination of the social media writers.”

But the opposition Action Alliance Party in the state described the alleged N2bn luxury vehicles as outrageous, at a time when government owed backlog of pensions and gratuities.

The AA Chairman in the state, Moses Kugba, in an interview with our correspondent, said, “Already there is outrage over the N2bn approval. The people of Taraba are not happy. Just imagine, how many schools and township roads these billions will repair in Taraba State. Imagine how much impact the N2bn will make in Taraba State University.

“The governor is entitled to official vehicles but the timing is wrong. The governor has some uncompleted projects and we expect him to complete some of these projects and not remove such a huge amount of money to buy cars.”

Efforts to get the main opposition party in the state, the All Progressives Congress, to react to the development failed as the chairman of the party in the state, Ibrahim Tukur-Elsudi, did not pick up calls made to his line or reply to a text message sent to his phone.

Also, the APC publicity Secretary in the state, Mr Aaron Arthimas, could also not be reached as his line indicated it was switched off.

But some residents of Jalingo, who spoke to our correspondent, including Lamini Ayua, Tanko Uba, Yusuf Mohammed and Livinus Agyo, also kicked against the alleged N2bn car gift.

One of the residents, Uba, told our correspondent: “I want to advise Governor Ishaku to rescind his approval on the project because the state needs such funds for better developmental activities.

“We are in a serious economic crisis as a state, the debt profile of the state is huge, salaries and pension are not paid, yet the governor (allegedly) approved such an amount of money for himself days before leaving office?

“The state cannot afford that for now. Governor Ishaku should not be self-centred. With the current situation of things, it’s greed that made the governor to (allegedly) approve such an amount of money for himself, his deputy, and their wives.”

Premium Times had reported that barely 18 days to the end of his tenure, the Taraba governor had approved N2bn for the purchase of luxury vehicles for himself, his deputy and their wives.

The online newspaper quoted a source as saying, “Governor Darius Ishaku in our last SEC meeting asked the council to approve a memo he presented for the purchase of vehicles for himself, his deputy and their wives and it was speedily approved without any argument.”

According to the report, the memo presented by the governor indicated that he would get two Toyota Land Cruiser SUVs, two escort Toyota Hilux vans, and a utility vehicle while his wife will get a Land Cruiser SUV worth N1.3bn.

The Deputy Governor, Haruna Manu, according to the memo, will receive two lower versions of Land Cruiser SUVs and one escort vehicle while his wife will get one SUV and a utility vehicle.

Checks by our correspondent revealed that the governor and his deputy have not changed the Lexus 570 SUVs they have been using since assumption of office in 2015

Christianity EtcPope Francis ‘loses Patience’ With Woman Who Wanted Her Dog Blessed by Debater(op): 9:14pm On May 14, 2023
Pope Francis has recalled the moment he “lost his patience” with a woman who asked him to “bless my baby”, only to be presented with a small dog.

The head of the Catholic church, who has accused those who do not have children of “selfishness” despite not fathering any of his own, said he publicly lambasted the woman, telling her: “So many children are hungry and you bring me a little dog.”

The harsh comments followed sobering demographic projections in Italy, with the annual number of births dropping below 400,000 in 2022 for the first time since records began, marking the 14th consecutive annual decline.

Sitting alongside Ms Meloni - both figures were dressed in all-white - Pope Francis lent an anecdote to his theory that “dogs and cats are taking the place of children” in Italy.

He told a story of a woman whom he met at a Vatican audience two weeks ago who asked for a blessing for “her baby”, which turned out to be a small dog.

“I greeted the lady, she opened her bag and said ‘bless my baby’. It was a little dog,” he told the conference.

“I lost my patience and upbraided her, saying madam, so many children are hungry and you bring me a little dog.”

I guess, well, in Nigeria, speakership is a war title, that people fight for.
"Oh, I wanna be speaker!" up and down, everywhere.
We hardly seem to realize that you do not run for leadership races to be a BOSS, instead to be a leader and guide
In Western nations, if someone gets elected, he and his people will celebrate, of course, for a little period of time
Guess what? In Nigeria, being elected is like signing a billion dollar contract! Celebration everywhere!
Anyways, God bless Nigeria.
So not lose hope in your country people, look at other nations. They all passed through the suffering stage too.
Remember the words of the national anthem, so I believe no one should be losing hope in Nigeria yet🇳🇬😌

You certainly know nothing of the British Monarchy
They don't put people under their feet, By the way there are elections in the United Kingdom. In case your small brain doesn't know, they have a prime minister who is duly elected. The king is just the ceremonial head of state, but he is not Supreme, because he governs using what we call a constitutional monarchy. So don't come to nairaland to blabber. No one is putting anyone under their feet.

Foreign AffairsKing Charles’s Coronation: How Will The Day Unfold? by Debater(op): 7:41am On May 06, 2023
King Charles III’s coronation will take place on Saturday with a ceremony full of pomp and pageantry.

King Charles III will be crowned at Westminster Abbey in London today in a ceremony that promises to be brimming with royal splendour and rituals that date back more than 1,000 years.

Camilla Parker Bowles, Charles’s wife, is set to receive the title of Queen Consort and will also be crowned.

Here is what you need to know about the day:

05:00 GMT (06:00 WAT): Coronation viewing areas will open along the main procession route. Public access to sites along the procession route will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

08:00 GMT (09:00 WAT): The congregation will arrive and be seated in Westminster Abbey.

08:30-09:45 GMT (9:30-10:45 WAT): High-profile guests including the royal family, heads of state and former prime ministers are scheduled to arrive for the coronation.

09:20 GMT (10:20 WAT): The king and queen consort will set off from Buckingham Palace, moving along The Mall to Trafalgar Square and then to Westminster Abbey in the Diamond Jubilee State Coach.

10:00 GMT (11:00 WAT): The coronation will begin with music, selected by Charles, playing the background.

The ceremony is expected to last a little under two hours and will be split into five stages:

1. Recognition – This will be led by the archbishop of Canterbury, the principal leader of the Church of England. Charles will stand beside the 700-year-old Coronation Chair as he faces the attendees. After a short ceremonial presentation, the congregation will announce, “God Save the King.”

2. The oath – Moving on from the ceremonial, the archbishop will get down to the legal requirement of the coronation oath. The king will be asked if he will uphold the law and maintain Christianity in the country. Other religious groups are expected to be acknowledged at the event. Charles will then take a second oath called the Accession Declaration Oath, in which he promises to be a “faithful Protestant”.

3. The anointing – Now comes the spiritual ceremonial traditions. The archbishop will pour an oil made in Jerusalem from a golden flask called an ampulla onto the coronation spoon before officially anointing Charles. This part of the ceremony will be performed behind a closed curtain.

4. Investiture and crowning – At this point, Charles will finally be crowned. The gold headpiece, which contains more than 400 gemstones, has been used since the coronation of Charles II in 1661.

5. The enthronement – The final stage is when Charles will sit on the throne. His eldest son, Prince William, will then pay homage to the new king by kneeling and swearing allegiance by kissing his right hand. Some guests will then be invited up to pay homage to the new king.

12:00 GMT (13:00 WAT): After another religious element in the ceremony, holy communion, Charles and Camilla will enter the Gold State Coach as they travel back to Buckingham Palace in the coronation procession.

12:45 GMT (13:45 WAT): Charles and Camilla will receive a royal salute on the West Terrace of the Buckingham Palace garden. Three cheers will ring out through the crowd.

13:15 GMT (14:15 WAT): There will be a six-minute fly-past, which will include the army, navy and air force and a display by the Red Arrows, also known as the Royal Air Force aerobatic team.
