Hello, do you bite your nail unconsciously? Do you go out and feel embarrassed at the look of your ugly sore nails? Or are you always sad at the injury or the blood you see after biting? Nail biting, which is also called onychophagia, is that the act of putting ones fingers in the mouth and biting/chewing on nails with the teeth. Many begin this unconscious act from childhood and sometimes it graduates into adulthood. Although many people do one thing or the other, like reading a book, sitting alone or chatting with friends when biting the bails, nail biting is harmful to the health. Various researches have shown the handful effects of nail biting, an act which is commonly practised during idleness, loneliness, boredom, stress, or depression. While some tag this act as a "bad habit," it is considered an impulsive control disorder - a compulsive habit where one cannot the urge and action to bite their nails. This action should be paid close attention, especially when it gets to an high level of severity, as it affects one both physically and emotionally. Are you a computer programmer preparing for boot camp? Or Are you preparing for Andela Bootcamp? This post list advice and tips for aspiring boot campers based on my Andela overall Boot camp experience. I just concluded my two weeks compulsory Andela boot camp, and it was the most challenging two weeks of my life. I learnt and applied knowledge, and became better. I was frustrated, angry and scared. I cried when I lost hope and I laughed when things went well. It was my first time experiencing such an exposure after four months of part-time coding. (I refer to my own experience part time because of lack of electric power supply and slow Internet issues.) I am going to give you some advice; I hope it helps you become better as a boot camper. This post is basically based on Andela Bootcamp experience. So, below are top tips for programmers preparing to hit boot camps around the country like that of Andela. 1. Read other people’s boot camp stories: Reading about other people’s experience will aid your preparation for the things you might face. 2. Make friends as soon as possible: Everyone must be your friend; you never know who can help. No one wants to help a grumpy person; you just have to be friendly. 3. Be calm and patient: whenever you receive a task, the first thing you should do is read with all calmness because panic doesn’t help solve any problem. Talk to two or three people about it, they might have a different opinion about a project. That way, you all can know if to ask your facilitators if you are getting things right. 4. Before camp, build something: whenever you learn a new language, think of the possible little things you can build with that language. You can build a calculator or something more advanced. It helps you improve the way you think. 5. Relate your activities to your tasks: whenever you are introduced to a new topic, think of how it relates to what you are doing in boot camp and the overall effect it will have on your project. 6. Be Motivated: I could have given up plenty of times, but what will happen to be part of Andela on my journey to being a world class developer? Who will fulfil my dream of showing other sickle cell patients around the globe that being in tech is possible? That doing anything they want no matter how difficult it is possible? This was the drive that kept me motivated, you should have one too. 7. Don’t waste time on fixing a bug: (Read this carefully). If there is a bug everyone on the team can’t solve, then it’s better to start the project over.You have to save copies of your work so that you won’t need to stress yourself too much. Processes in building apps are sensitive. For example, in my case, “Sequelization” wasn’t properly done, and there was no other way to fix anything than to start all over. It became faster, clearer and easier. Again, I repeat, try reading other people’s boot camp stories to get some other pieces of advice and tips. I wish you all the best. If You Eat Fried Potatoes Two or More Times a Week, It Doubles Your Risk of An Early Death - New Study Claims According to a recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, it says people who eat fried potatoes two or more times a week double their risk of an early death compared to those who avoid them. However, the researchers noted that eating potatoes that have not been fried was not linked to a similar early mortality risk. The research tracked 4,440 people aged 45 to 79 over a period of eight years to study osteoarthritis. This research team decided to momentarily set aside the main issue of osteoarthritis and look at participants' consumption of potatoes. So, the researchers divided study participants into subgroups based on how frequently they ate potatoes each week. Over the eight years, a total of 236 of the participants died. Analysing the data for each group, Veronese and his team found that those who ate fried potatoes two to three times each week doubled their chance of dying early compared to those who ate no fried potatoes. French fries, potato chips, hash browns and any other preparation that requires frying were all included under the umbrella of "fried potatoes". Age or sex of participants did not influence the result, but the data showed men were more likely than women and younger participants were more likely than older participants to enjoy the fried food. Have you ever wondered why you don't lose weight when you barely eat for the sake of shedding it all? Argh! I know right? It's very frustrating. Let me break it down; You see, when you starve and stress yourself, your body produces a hormone called Cortisol. This annoying cortisol bloats you by providing the body with extra fat that will be converted into energy when you stress yourself. The worse part is, when you stress yourself, you are losing more of water than fat. So yes, literally its a waste of time. However, some people have a little amount of cortisol, when these people starve, they shed it. The problem is they look "starved" not "toned." Now sweethearts, in other to lose weight, at least a little bit of it, you should try the following: 1. Blend fruits and drink from time to time instead of starving yourself. A mixture of carrot, watermelon, cucumber and any other fruit will do. 2. Don't eat anything after 5 pm, not even fruits. Keep drinking water until the next day. 3. Eat a little at a time, don't overfeed. If for example, you want to eat 5bags of rice -lol, just kidding.- Eat one bag five different times, make sure you leave space in between the time you eat. 4. Eat food that is easily digestible. Soft swallow like semolina will be better than fufu or eba. 5. Make sure your bowel movement is good. Go to toilet at least once in a day, it helps. 6. Avoid fatty foods, fried food, flour foods and white rice. 7. Take plenty of soft paw-paws. It will help your bowel movement, and you won't gain fat eating it. 8. Stop the habit of drinking acidic fruit juice like lime on an empty stomach. By following these steps, you will notice within a week that you feel lighter even if it is not glaring that you are shedding weight.
