PoliticsState Governments Misappropriating Public Fundswith Dubious Laws by Decibel(op): 8:42pm On Jul 22, 2014
*Study shows direct link with states’ misuse of N8.22 Trillion in 4 Years By Chineme Okafor A mapping and scoping survey of anti-corruption and governance measures in public finance management within Nigerian states has shown that state governments misuse public revenues accrued to their states through dubious and faulty public finance laws.
The study was conducted by the Technical Unit on Governance and Anti-Corruption Reforms (TUGAR) which is located within the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI). It indicated that instances of fiscal indiscipline remain prevalent amongst states in the country. TUGAR’s study equally indicated that state governments have often resorted to misappropriating revenues that accrue to their states without functional laws governing their financial expenditure on procurement of public goods amongst others. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/state-governments-misappropriating-public-funds-with-dubious-laws/184256/
PoliticsGale Of Impeachment: PDP Warns its State Legislators, Calls For Caution by Decibel(op): 8:33pm On Jul 22, 2014
Accuses APC of being on destructive march Chuks Okocha In an apparent reaction to the gale of impeachments in some parts of the country, where the legislators elected
on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are at the centre stage, the national leadership of the party has cautioned its legislators, asking them to thread on the path of caution. Also, the party described as baseless and unfounded, the warning by former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari accusing President Goodluck Jonathan of intimidating opposition political party. The party said rather, the All Progressive Congress (APC) has been the architect of its own misfortune and on a destructive march that is capable of truncating the nation’s democratic journey. Addressing a world press conference, the National Publicity Secretary of PDP, Olisa Metuh, said, “For the avoidance of doubt, the PDP has never been involved in any impeachment process and we wish to publicly urge our members in all the state houses of assembly to thread with caution and be guided by due process, rule of law in the execution of their legislative duties”. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/gale-of-impeachment-pdp-warns-its-state-legislators-calls-for-caution/184258/

PoliticsScheming Atiku: We Stand By Our Position On APC – PDP Tells Atiku by Decibel(op): 12:07pm On Jul 22, 2014
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
on Monday said the All Progressives
Congress (APC) and its leaders are
embittered that they have been
exposed for what they are.
PDP specifically claimed that leaders of the opposition party are in pains
that Nigerians now know that the
APC has no agenda rather a platform
for selfish individuals pursuing
personal and parochial agenda
using blackmail, propaganda and promotion of violence as means to
achieve political control.
The PDP stated this while reacting to
former Vice President Atiku
Abubakar’s statement on the
political activities of PDP-led federal government, lambasting the PDP and
the Presidency for exploiting fault
lines in the country as a means of
diverting attention from it failures.
The PDP said while it does not wish
to join issues with the former vice president, one of the founding
fathers of the party. It however
asked Atiku to caution his media
managers to desist from associating
him with propaganda, political
mudslinging and character assassination that the APC has
become notorious for.
A statement by PDP spokesman, Olisa
Metuh said, “We also wish to put on
record that the Peoples Democratic
Party (PDP) has deliberately chosen not to take on the person of any of
its former members who are now in
the opposition.
for the simple reason that we were
members of the same large family,
differences in persuasions of today notwithstanding.
“However, it is shocking that the
leaders and members of the APC
have gone on rabid attack on the
Presidency and the leadership of the
PDP. ”In spite, we wish to state for the
avoidance of doubt that we stand by
our position that the APC is a party of
selfish, religious and ethnic bigots
pursuing a supporter of APC ideology.
“The APC leaders are bitter because they have been confronted with a
PDP that is not afraid to label them in
their true colour despite personal
threats, media attacks and character
assassination to cow and deter us.
“We wish to inform the APC that we shall not relent but continue in the
overall national interest to expose
their evil agenda including their use
of religion as a cover for narrow
political ambitions.” http://m.dailytimes.com.ng/article/we-stand-our-position-apc-–-pdp-tells-atiku

Unable to accurately calculate where the pendulum would swing should the embattled Governor of Nasarawa,
Tanko Al-Makura, be removed, top governorship aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state are said to be perfecting plans aimed at scuttling the impeachment process against the governor. The calculation is that once Al- Makura is impeached and Luka Barau
assumes office, the power of incumbency would be to his advantage, as he would hold forth as governor till the February 2015 governorship election thus reducing their chances of ever being in the race. THISDAY gathered that this development is not in the political interest of the top PDP governorship aspirants, hence the plot to scuttle and throw open the governorship primary election of the party The PDP governorship aspirants said to be linked with the impeachment manoeuvres are the Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, Senator Solomon Ewuga and former Senator John Danboyi. THISDAY was reliably informed that the plot by to stop the impeachment of Al-Makura is hinged on the fear that the immediate beneficiary of the impeachment would be the deputy governor, Barau, who defected from the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) to the PDP. According to the source, “With the impeachment of the governor, the deputy governor would become the substantive governor since it was a joint ticket. This is unlike the impeachment of Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State and his deputy, James Ngillari, and the assumption of the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Hon. Fintiri, as the acting governor pending 90 days for a new election.” All of them belong to the Northern senatorial zone of the state and have not produced a governor since the creation of the state by the regime of late General Sani Abacha. Originally, Al-Makura and Barau were PDP members who defected to CPC to contest the governorship election in 2011 when they were denied the governorship ticket in favour of the incumbent, Akwe Doma, who was later defeated in the poll by Al- Makura and Barau. But with the defection of Al-Makura from CPC to the All Progressives Congress (APC), the refusal of Barau to defect with him, and the deputy governor’s eventual defection back to the PDP, he becomes the most senior PDP member in the state. THISDAY was told that the Minister of Information, Maku and Senator Ewuga are from the Nasarawa Eggon axis in the Northern Senatorial District, while the incumbent governor, Al-Makura is from the Southern Senatorial axis of Lafia. The former governor that ruled the state from May 27, 2007 to 2011 is from Doma, which is also from the Southern Senatorial District. Barau is from the Nasarawa Central district of the Akwanga axis. The contest for the governorship election is a straight battle between Barau if he becomes the substantive governor with the eventual impeachment of Al-Makura against Maku, Danboyi and Ewuga. The former governor, Doma, is also said to be in the race, as he insists that his zone is yet to complete the eight years tenure, as he spent four years. With the power of incumbency, the fear is that the National Working Committee (NWC) of PDP would be prevailed upon to allow the deputy governor become the governor and it would be difficult for other governorship aspirants to unseat Barau. According to the source, “Several clandestine meetings have been on with the aim of thwarting the impeachment process against Al- Makura.” All attempts to speak with the Minister of Information proved abortive. A short text message was sent to his phone and he responded with an empty message. As at press time, the deputy governor, Barau, was still in Abuja where he had relocated to along with the state’s lawmakers. The fear is high that he could be attacked if he ventures into the state. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/pdp-bigwigs-move-to-stall-al-makura-s-impeachment/184224/
