Your purchasing power comparison is likewise insightful. Thanks!

NaijaphiliaBlog:
Your proposal is insightful. Let's check it out:

(A). PURCHASING POWER IN 1976 VS COST OF 1976 HONDA CIVIC
In 1976, Nigeria's nominal minimum wage was ₦60 per month i.e. ₦720 per annum.

In 1976, the cost of a brand-new Honda Civic was ₦3,205

This was equivalent to 53.5 months' salary (or four and a half years' salary).

(B). PURCHASING POWER IN 2023 VS COST OF 2023 HONDA CIVIC
In 2023, Nigeria's minimum wage is ₦30,000 per month i.e. ₦360,000 per annum.

In 2023, the cost of a brand-new Honda Civic is ₦19.5m (approx).

This is equivalent to 650 months' salary (54 years' salary).

(C). INFERENCE
By this purely linear logic (not taking any other germane factors into account), the base-salaried Nigerian worker in 2023 is more than 12-fold worse off than his 1976 counterpart!

They bought brand new cars like it was nothing in those good old days..

Nice!
There is no doubt that the standard of living in the country has fallen, over time.

Those who are old enough will have memories of many relations who took loans and bought brand new vehicles, in those days.

These days, what ratio of our honest, hard-working citizens can afford to buy brand new cars?
PoliticsRe: Peter Obi Wins Bola Tinubu's LG, Ikeja LGA by DeFuturePresido: 10:45pm On Feb 26, 2023
Best comment so far!

All races of human beings on earth have their own strengths and weaknesses. The greatest weakness of the black race is SENTIMENT - tribal, religious, political, etc.

That weakness is responsible for many of the challenges we see all around us (poor critical reasoning, manipulations, corruption, poverty etc).

It takes time to build anything that will last for generations, and a revolution does not always happen in a violent manner.

To all our youths and everyone that loves this country: There is hope for Nigeria. This country was designed and destined by the Almighty for greatness. It is in our DNA.

Don't give up hope!

PoliticsRe: If Obi Losses, Many Northern Christians May Denounce Their Faith by DeFuturePresido: 10:13pm On Feb 26, 2023
Amen! I have lived in the north for many years and seen many challenging circumstances. God saved my life during several of the riots in Kano, Zaria and Kaduna.

Through it all, the gates of hell have not prevailed against the church.

Let me point out that the type of fear being expressed by the OP arises from the misconception that Christianity is a religion.

No, it was never meant to be! Jesus Christ actually came to restore man back into fellowship with God.

No genuine Christian, having a vibrant personal relationship with Almighty God, will ever renounce his /her faith because of any political outcome.

OP, don't be discouraged. This election is actually going to result in a massive spiritual revival and harvest in the north.

The scope of this refinery project is actually mind-boggling.

Just think about the massive employment opportunities, the resultant socio-economic multiplier effects, the FX savings on fuel importation, the termination of fuel subsidy payments, the extra FX earnings from finished product exports, etc, etc.

You are right about Belgium's high taxes.

The personal income tax is pegged at a maximum of 50%, but Communes / municipalities can also levy a surcharge on income tax that varies from 2.5% to 9.0%, and is paid along with the income tax.

Meanwhile, for those who live in Belgium more than 6 months of the year, these taxes are applied on world-wide earnings,

In addition, Social Security contributions are charged at 13.07% and are directly deducted by the employer.

Finally, the Value Added Tax (VAT) has a standard rate of 21%.

That is the reality of life in Belgium.

You are absolutely correct. Nepotism is not good for democracy.

However, we can only teach someone who is willing to learn.

The challenge in many parts of the country is that many of the less educated citizens actually take instructions (on whom to vote for) from their political, tribal or religious leaders.

Again, many of these people are the ones who have PVCs. At the same time, they are neither on social media or even on the internet.

So, how do we reach and enlighten them?

TravelRe: 5,000 Km Road Linking 6 African Countries From Algiers To Lagos Is Nearly Ready by DeFuturePresido: 10:27am On Nov 23, 2022
Wow!

Never knew that the AfDB was doing so much for infrastructure on the continent.

These are truly massive projects.

NaijaphiliaBlog:
We are yet to confirm that, but it is very likely, because of the sheer scale of the project and its requisite transnational mediation/logistics.

We do know that the African Development Bank (AfDB) is involved in the following:

1. This year at the Africa Investment Forum from 15 to 17 March 2022, a total of $15.6 billion was secured by the Bank to develop a 1,081 km long 6-lane highway corridor from Lagos to Abidjan.

That corridor is where 75% of all trade in the ECOWAS region happens. It will transport everything and will be borderless in that people can travel freely across that corridor.

The Lagos - Abidjan highway will significantly impact the economies of 5 West African countries: Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin and Nigeria. The new highway will start at Bingerville, in the eastern suburbs of Abidjan, and terminate at Mile 2 (Eric Moore) in Lagos. It will have a total of 8 border posts.

2. The Abidjan-Lagos highway is also one of 16 projects included in the Priority Action Plan of the African Union's Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa (PIDA), which is being implemented by the AfDB.

3. Further, the Abidjan-Lagos highway will complete the Enugu-Bamenda corridor linking southeast Nigeria in West Africa to southwest Cameroon in Central Africa. The 443-km highway, costing about $430 million, is being financed by the AfDB.

4. The Abidjan-Lagos highway will boost transport (roads, railroads, ports and airports) in West Africa and help accelerate implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (ACFTA), a market of 1.3 billion consumers and with combined GDP of about $3 trillion.

5. The Bank also invested significantly in the Kazungula bridge linking Namibia, Botswana, and Zambia. After AfDB's investment, the wait time for trucks crossing the borders went from 14 days to only one hour.

6. The bank also invested $1 billion in constructing a highway between Addis Ababa and Nairobi, and which will eventually extend to Mombasa. That alone will allow an increase in trade of around 400% between Kenya and Ethiopia.

So, yes, you are right - the "African Unity Road" sounds like something up AfDB / Adesina's alley!
TravelRe: 5,000 Km Road Linking 6 African Countries From Algiers To Lagos Is Nearly Ready by DeFuturePresido: 10:53pm On Nov 22, 2022
This is really great news!

The potential economic benefits of this highway are immense.

Kudos to everyone who conceived / brought this to reality.

NaijaphiliaBlog:
The “African Unity Road” is a highway that will link 6 African nations, improving transport and delivering high-speed internet across the continent.

At Guezzam, on the border between Algeria and Niger, the last section is now nearing completion.

Conceived over 50 years ago, the Trans-Saharan Highway runs almost 5,000 kilometres from Algiers to Lagos in Nigeria. Its goal is to strengthen regional integration and promote trade between the north and south of the Sahara.

The road is also lined with thousands of kilometres of cable as part of another multinational project: the Trans-Saharan Fibre Optic Backbone.

For many Nigerians, their mistrust of the system is well justified and based on personal experience.

See this example from a fellow Nairalander:

https://www.nairaland.com/7391145/sojourn-police

prof2007:
That is because many Nigerians believe that the system is riddled with bribery and corruption.

Some have obtained justice via the legal route but some others have gotten burnt.

This is part of the reasons so many Nigerians resort to self-help in addressing cheating and injustice.
