Diamondcrown9, Nice pictures, i wish alot of farmers will research and en devour to grow Moringa, It remains the most economically viable tree to grow in Nigeria today. I think we should form a whatsapp group and share ideas on Moringa ; i have about 5hectares of Moringa plantation in Kwara state, am still working on expanding it this year. Tell us more about the Moringa cream, am keen to learn. |

Eefosa1:Pls send me an email: deji@fulfillsa.co.za I have about 50 left, its N1,000 each, the new stock will be more expensive because of the Dollar/Naira Rate. moniyitan:Nigerian factor is what most consultant wont tell you, alot of business proposals are excellent on paper, without the Nigerian factor, well, in Nigeria , you learn every day, from experience, some of us have learnt how to " reduce"( not eliminate) the nigerian factor . Pls share your own experience " Nigerian factor" experience, lets learn from it |
Hello Fellow Farmers, Happy New Year to you all!.. We pray that 2016 will be better than previous years. I hope we have all drawn our goals and plans for 2016; Piggery requires alot of planning, research, we should all plan to improve our farms this year, remember, the key to a successful piggery are : Good Breed, Good Feed, Good Management,.. i think this year we should include .. "Processing" ( adding value to it). I will like to write on Management : Lets start with a proper farm record this year, buy an exercise book or use Ms excel, or if you are a tech savvy, look for a software to manage your piggery . A farm is as good has the records it keeps.. get to know your pigs, tag them, number them, either using a tattoo or buy tags to identify each pig and document it,ensure there is something to identify that particular sow or boar; keep the record somewhere, duplicate them somewhere else as back up.." I know alot of us have excellent memories, but remember, "the shortest pencil is better than the longest memory". ** Calculate your input, how much do you spend monthly, compare to your weight gain? Are you really making profit? If you are.. how much are you making? ( alot of pig farmers, aint making money, they just think they are) lets do it better this year. *** Make New Year resolution to increase consumption: This year, am committed to mentoring 4 farmers, who are willing to venture into pig farming and processing it to pork, bacon, sausage. Am also committed to donating Pigs to , Orphanages, old peoples homes,Church programs, Youth programs.. any program that will increase awareness and reduce the stigmatization of pigs in Nigeria ( If you know of any, pls. email me). I think we all have to try and do the something this year..lets all pig farmers donate 1 pig for a church program in 2016, slaughter it, get someone to make pork suya and asun ,( am sure it will produce a sweet smelling aroma to God). Pay your Pig farm tithe as a pig , donation to your church, instead of selling the pig and giving the money ( Pls dont tell your Pastor i said it o!). If we all do this. we will increase consumption by atleast 50% and be more profitable.. ** I will do less of nairaland write ups, has i prefer a more interactive platform i am shifting to the facebook group of PPAN, https://www.facebook.com/Pork-Producers-Association-of-Nigeria-1626885620896918/ This week, i will be in Nigeria, to inseminate a batch of sow, ( artificial insemination) i will share pictures of the process on facebook, as i remember the previous picture, i shared here didn't go well with the moderator. Lets share more information on this group, let is not only be about sales, questions.. lets push this to the front page of nairaland. Together we can do more |
abiodunolarinre:Is it industrial or Local crush? 1st or 2nd crush? How much is it per tonne? How much do you sell your sludge? We use about 4tonnes monthly in ilorin |
@ Jessam, Thanks for the picture of the nipple on the tank, will like to ask.. How long have you had this on the plastic tank? Did the pigs ever try to pull it out? Because i know even on concrete, if not properly done, they use dia teeth to pull it out of the wall. I think its a brilliant concept, if it will last long, you can use this to also manage medication, you can add Multivitamin or specific drugs in the water for a few pigs and monitor the consumption, but i think for a large farm, its still cheaper to run the water thru the walls has compared to individual drums. @ Butchery, Am happy you posted here, after our chat, Processing is the future of this industry, those who process, make double a times triple what pig farmers make; kindly post prices, and specific basic equipment for here for those looking into processing. I will be writing on my experience on pork processing soon. |
lolarde:Hi Lolarde, Am happy you mentioned the word " Passion" Without Passion, you cant go into Piggery, i guess thats why both words starts with the same letter ( P) .Piggery isnt a money spinner , it requires alot of research and Patience; because the practice hasnt been standardised in Nigeria, hardly will you meet 2 farmers using similar feed formular alot of farmers are using waste/ bi-products available around them. I am willing to mentor you, drop me an e-mail. awosmart:Awosmart, Thanks for the comment and thanks for liking the facebook page. Well, a few of us took time to discuss this association, it took us over a year of considering several things and factors, i also met with the South African Pork producers association to help us model our association . We have modeled the association after the SA Pork association which has been very successful ; for us to increase pork consumption in Nigeria , we need money, the 100k isnt going to any members pocket, but for the association to fulfill its aims and objectives i wont like to derail this form with the gist of the association, send an email : info@ppanig.com ; also check the other requirements as well ciouxox:Hi Ciouxox, I live in SA but my pig farm is in ilorin, kwara state, drop me an e-mail. i have some clients in ph, that i can hook you up with. |
Hello Everyone, Finally the long awaited association is finally here. We have registered Pork Producers Association of Nigeria (PPANIG); with CAC and has a website. Pls go thru the website: www.ppanig.com For those who are interested in joining, please go on the page and check the requirements and drop us an e-mail: info@ppanig.com For all, Please go to oour facebook page : https://www.facebook.com/Pork-Producers-Association-of-Nigeria-1626885620896918 like us there, invite your friends to do so as well. PPAN!!!!>... Together We can!. |
Don4eva:Don4eva, Feed formular is tricky, it depends on your location and ingredient around you if your pigs aint foreign. or " unknown" I love to compare pigs with chicken your question is: if i rephrase it ; " give me feed formular for my new chicken" my question will be, what kind of chicken do you have? Broilers, cockrel or local chicken? If i recommend layer starter for you, when your chicken are local, it wont make sense, they wont convert it well. what is the source of the pigs? what does the sow / mother feed on? what feed ingredient is cheap in your area? Am in ilorin, i get Maize for as low as N35 per kg, so my feed will be diffrent from someone in Lagos, who gets maize for N60 per kg; but gets gala waste for N20 per kg. so your question isnt that straight forward. I know alot of farmers use broilers starter has creeping feed, you can try that, if they FCR is good, you can stick with that, else send me details of feed ingredient in your area and i can advice further. wakabout:Wakabout, I know.. i can tell you that 99% pig farmers use hanging scale,it is unfair. Digital scales aint cheap, they are expensive but worth it. Contact Femu ; he has advertised it previously on this platform. weighing pigs is has important has farming pigs, i have seen alot of farmers pour water into leaking basket, but aint aware its leaking, because they cant measure the weight on a regular basis. |
akhis:Akhis, uhmmm.. its depends on several factors,( feed, breed, management, location) i will say, a profitable piggery should make about N7,000 from every pig . if you process it to pork, you should be able to double that. |
Hello Fellow Farmers/ Potential Farmers, This month ( October) was so fast! i will try and write a few advice for those looking into " our industry". I promised to write about Management and the Nigerian factor ** Management: uhmm.. like i have written in some of my previous posts, We have 3 major factors to succeed in Piggery, they are 1) The Breed ( Genetics) 2) Feed 3) Management Management for me is the biggest among the 3 factors, alot of us think Labour is cheap, "why do i have to automate, Nigeria is a country, where the minimum wage is N18,000; so why do i have to spend so much money on automation? I will rather employ someone to do the job than spend alot of money ( drinking nipples, slated floors, farrowing crates)".. Labour in Nigeria is inefficient, unreliable, scarce and one of the biggest challenges most farmers in Africa . In Nigeria its worse, in my 3years as a pig farmer, i have lost count of how many farm workers i have employed, i have tried, Togolese, Benue, Igbo, Yoruba Tiv, Nassawa boys etc... Most of them work when you are there, they work when they want to and dont follow instructions. They also dont come cheap.this is a major factor constraint in our industry. Pigs have specific time they need to be fed, to convert it ultimately ; i love to compare pigs with human beings, what is the point, when instead of you giving a child food 3 times a day, you put his breakfast and lunch in the microwave and at night, you give him the 3 meals.. will that child be as healthy as a child given his 3 meals has at when due? ** Skilled Labour: Well, am sorry to say,.. the graduates coming out of Nigerian Universities these days are something else.. I have employed Master degree holders, who will cross their legs and do nothing and cant even keep farm records. some cant use Ms.excel I have employed a Vet Doctor, who couldnt diffreniate between a castrate Male pig from an uncastrate pig. You have so many people claiming to be vet doctors who cant inject correctly, who cant read pig behaviours; There are quacks who claim to be vet doctors. all these are big issues that have to be considered before setting up a piggery.. For alot of farmers or people looking at farming " inabsential " ( you are abroad, and you are looking into having a farm in nigeria or you are working and want to have it as a side business). This is a big factor that i will recommend you take time to look carefully. The Nigerian Factor: There are stories of farm manager making substandard feed, we have cases of feedmillers cheating the farmer etc.selling unpalatable feed Most successful farms in Nigeria, now hire expartriates from China, India and SA, not because they know the job better maybe because they dont understand what is called " Nigerian factor" I can write a book on Management issues especially on Nigerian factor, i will advice that people going into piggery should look into ways to reduce it; it is believed you cant eradicate it completely, you can only reduce it. Also I will advice people looking into piggery to try and automate as many things as they can. Network with people who have experience, get consultants who have experience to consult for you. You also need to do alot of Research, read books, there are thousands of materials all over the internet on piggery, some are not applicable in Nigeria, some are relevant while others are not. *** Farm Record: Alot of young people ( including myself) are into farming, but most of us are still doing it the old way, the way the illerates do it, i have visited alot of farms in Nigeria, and they cant tell me, how much feed their pigs eat per day or how much it cost? Farming is all about " Input and Output" it is pure Mathematics, in Piggery, all we are doing is converting feed to meat ( for those fattening). You have to know your cost per day, per animal . farm record keeping is has important has the farm itself you need to know when your pigs were born, when they are supposed to be weaned, when they attain first heat, etc. in some countries, they monitor the cycles of their sows to know when they will be on heat.( Secret for having large number of piglets). You need to either tag each pig or tatoo them, or have a way of identify each of your breeders stock to keep proper record. ** Digital Scale: You also need to have a digital scale to weigh you pigs on a regular basis to know if you are making profit or not. Alot of farmers dont have scales, some have " hanging scales" which i think is " Barbaric " to hang a pig upside down just to check its weight. Some sell pigs just by the way it looks (lol), this is 2015.. we need to measure correctly. I will recommend that anyone going into piggery, should ensure that they have a digital scale to weigh their pigs regularly, to know how to calculate its FCR ( Feed Conversion Ratio) and know if the farm was making money or running at a loss. I hope i have been able to add another 2kobo to my previous post. |
Darfemi:Darfemi, Thanks for the feedback: If you read my write up carefully, it is for people looking at 50 sow production line. with a 50 sow production line, you will wean about 1,000 piglets per year, averagely you will have about 200-300pigs per time; you will require about 10,000 liters per day, i dont think there is any well that can give you that amount of water daily. River ..uhmm, am not too sure u can get clean water from the river. Pigs need clean water. i dont think u can get clean water all year round from any river. Eefosa Eefosa1:i have dropped the price from N1,500 to N1,000 ; the post was an old post. I will recommend u consider the tips/nipples, try install 2-3 nipples in one of the rooms, and see the difference between the pigs who have access to water 24-7 , compare to those who dont. try it for a month and compare. An hectare isnt cheap, building a pen isnt cheap either. |
Hello Farmers, Not to bore those who dont like to read long stories, i have summarised my experience, i hope this will be valuable for some farmers, or those who intend to go into farming. This is strictly from my personal experience and not a standard. I have received e-mails from several people who intend to go into farming, planning to quit their jobs and go into it full time at a later stage, from my experience, you will require a 50 sow production line ( meaning 50 Sow (females) ) weaning about 1,000 piglets yearly.i think with a production of this nature, you can make a decent income , better than most paid jobs. But Please start small and grow your herd. My write up is for people looking in that direction ** Land Size: Alot of young people are going into farming, acquiring land, and trying to start small, from my experience, i will advice you try and much has possible to acquire a decent size, 2-4plots isnt enough for piggery, except you have plans to move after 1 or 2years, which isnt easy. i recommend a minimum of 1 hectares ( 20 plots) if you really want to go big ( have about 50 sow production line). I know it might cost alot of money, but its very important. You might argue and say that size is too big, you just need to build a small pen, etc.. have you considered where you will dispose your waste? If other people buy the land around and start to complain of smell, what do you do? Cost of constructing a pen isnt cheap so i will rather advice you get a decent size of land, so that you have room for future expansion; it is difficult having two diff farms, its always better if all its at a particular location, it will be easier to share resources, for you to make it in piggery, you will also require to build a farm house, borehole; etc.. Piggery is long term and not for small players For those who want to start small, i will recommend, you rent a Pen instead. *** Water: I can write 50 pages on my water experience in ilorin; well i know alot of people down south might not experience this but before you purchase that land for a piggery, get a Geologist to come and do a survey , to ensure there is " industrial/Commercial" volume of water ( Not domestic). this will cost you about 15k naira No water no farming, if you cant get decent volume of water, please dont bother to go into piggery, a breast feeding sow requires 23liters per day, you require almost the same amount to clean the house, i wont recommend you rely on a river or a well. Also, you need drinking nipples/ tips, for the pigs; i have seen alot of water farms , where there water isnt automated that the pigs drink from the wallowing house, i love to compare pigs with human beings, what you cant drink, dont give your pigs to drink. Will wait for feedback and questions, those who have e-mailed me in the past without a response, am sorry, pls resend. I will write later on Management and " Nigerian Factor". I hope my 2kobo ( 2cent) advice has blessed someone |
HI Fellow Farmers n Readers, Its been awhile.. Happy Independence day, i hope you gave your pigs a better feed ration on independence day as well and gave them independence to work around and exercise better. I see the room has been quiet lately, i have made up my mind, to visit more often this month ( october,2015) and share some of my experience and reply to questions; i will share some of the bad experiences i have had in farming... i noticed most people share only the good stories, which has made alot of people to rush into farming, thinking its a goldmine. I will also share "some" secrets which might be helpful; i will appreciate if we can make it more interactive; pls will appreciate if nobody derail the conversation/topic. I will start with the story of my farm , will share more of the negative/mistakes that i made which i think you should watch out for ( new farmers). Will appreciate feedback before i start and suggestions , if you dont think it will be meaningful or helpful let me know ... if you are there reading and in support of this, i will need atleast 10 positive feedback before i start. |

chimilolo:From my lab analysis of Rice husk, the results shows it has 33percent of crude fibre and 4.7percent of Protein. Alot of farmers dont use it or believe in it... i will say a max ratio of 15percent in your feed ration; thats if u aint adding any other fibre content ingredient. Guys, lets keep this page alive, lets commit to sharing our weekly experience on the farm. |
awosmart: awosmart:I do import nipples from SA; i will offer you for 1k each, with 12Months warranty on each of them, if it breaks within 12months, i will swop it for free. e-mail me to order: deji@fulfillsa.co.za

morounfade:Sorry, am in ilorin.. am sure you can get it from oke-aro or ikorodu . pls tell us more about the experiment after its done. |
Debesther:Debesther, You question is a jamb question (lol); your questions is the same as someone asking, how long with it take a chick to attain 3kg? what feed is required? My first question is, what type of chick? Broilers, Layers ,Local breed or cockrel? Are they going to be in running around or in pens? Pigs are exactly like that, am sure if you read thru all the previous post, you will understand better. Buddhar:I agree... all the gurus pls come back, we need to ensure we get to front page |
glowdot4:HI Gloria, Am sorry if my words offended you in anyway, i was also shocked, by your post.. i have sold over 400 weaners on this forum, so its an integrity issue for me. kindly send me an e-mail, or send me your number, let me know what happened. |
glowdot4:Gloria, I think what you have done is unfair, i havent never spoken with you; you dont have my number.. coming on a forum like this to make those statement about your experience with me , when you could have e-mailed me is unfair( my e-mail is on all my advert on this forum); maybe you have spoken to my staff or someone who claims to work for me , i dont know yet.. Nevertheless, here is my e-mail: deji@fulfillsa.co.za i want to know what happened. |
glowdot4:Hi Glowdot4, Pls talk to me, if you have a "funny experience". i checked my data base, cant remember selling any pig to you, only if am making a mistake, you can e-mail me privately or share the experience publicly, i will answer to any issue you have. |
jedisco: jedisco:Jedisco, Well, I think Oga Lagbaja has done justice to your questions, but since u request us to comment, I will addd my 2 cents. *1) I don't think u can compare pigggery n poultry, piggery is long term, it takes minimum of 18months to break even, compared to poultry ( broilers) cld be 10weeks. Also poultry farmers in Nigeria have been able to come together n develop it so well, that you can gets good breeds, equipments, vaccines etc ; that we pig farmers haven't been able to do. To answer ur question, I think if. It's alll about profit: I think. U shdnt even consider farming in the first place, passion shd come first.if you don't have passion for pigs, I think poultry will be more profitable 2). It is difficult to calc; depends on breed, feed and management; pigs in developed countries convert @ 2.3kg to 1kg weight, in Nigeria.. lots of farmers don't know, you. Will find some pigs that convert @ 4kg; some @ 6kg, some @ 8kg.. I guess it's hard to tell, also depends on the feed; and management. I think the major advantage is, when you sell, you make your money in bulk 3) am located in ilorin.. most pig farmers are in the. S.West, they have a better weather than we in the north and get more bi-product ( BDG,PKC, Gala waste etc ; but we in the north have cheap maize, which is 60percent of feed for pigs in developed. Countries. Am sure you will find some farmers in kaduna; find what they feed 4) I always advice to ensure you get a. Sizeable land, I honestly think 4plots is small, unless u are sure to acquire more soon; I will recommend a minimum of 20plots, except you intend to start. Andd move to a permanent site within 2-3yrs. Also water, Please ensure you have a borehole; piggery require about 4,000 liters a day if you intend to have about 100 pigs, water is very very important. Pigs ain't easy to steal, i dont know much about crime in KD 5) housing: depends on materials etc, a standard pen whichh can accommodate about 100pigs will. Cost you between 800k -2Milllion, depending on the type of flooring you intend to use and labour cost also your roofing materials ( Abestos, roofing sheet or tapulin) 6). Pigs smell is worst than that of birds. Also your waste is more, so you need adequate land to dispose your waste 7) No, you can't channel ur waste to a river. Pls don't do such, dig a pit, or spread it on 2plots of land, when it's dry, bag it; am sure vegetable farmers will buy it of you, or you can use it to grow crops alots of people have piggery n poultry, my poultry pays my monthly running cost for the farm, while the pig is forr the long n medium term; a few. People I know also have piggery n fishery together, some vegetables n piggery.9) depends on how the pen is designed, e.g I have just 1 person taking care of 150 pigs, because my water is automated, my liquid waste is also automated, all they do is feed n take the solid waste; if you also do so, then u can also have 1 or 2 people, but if everything has to be manual, then you might require more hands, Most times in Nigeria, we think labour Is cheap, but most of the cheap labour isn't effective. I will recommend atleast ensure you have drinking nipples. 10) We have registered Pork Producers Association of Nigeria; info will soon be avail on how to join etc. * Last advice, don't rush into it; look for pig farmers around you, find out how it's been done, but dont limit yourself to that. You won't make money for the first 2yrs, ensure you have enough money to feed for 2yrs. Read, read, learn, don't rush into it. If you don't have passion for it, don't start it. If you can get a pen to rent, maybe you start with that and later start yours, when you have gained experience Hope my 2cent advice was worth reading. |

Hi Farmers, Thanks for all the e-mails and sales We have sold about 126 using this platform in the last month. We have about 50 weaners ( 15kg) , selling Them @ 8k each, minimum of 10. Our last delivery towards Lagos axis is 26th of April. Am going to be inseminating another batch of sow on the 18th - 21st of April. Using PIC 337 If you are interested in in-sow you will be allowed to come in and learn and see how we inseminate them ; but you willl have to shower and follow our bio-security rules. It's 70k per inseminate sow; kindly mail to book ahead I went today for PIC roadshow in irene, met the MD of keken.com.mx ( check the website); they have a 52,500 sow production line with close to 300 stores in Mexico ;1,600 staff in there processing plant;exporting to japan,HK, etc; slaughtering 27,000 pigs weekly; they generate dia own power from the waste and irrigate jethropha with waste water; Mexico has alot of things in common with Nigeria I was inspired and saw so much potentials in this industry; less than 5percent of eligible ( Christians)Nigerians consume pork ; we haven't scratched the surface yet. Pork still remains one of the cheapest protein source of meat; healthier than beef, goat etc Watch out for the pork producers association of Nigeria |
Hello Fellow farmers, Thanks for those who have mailed and orders. I have received several questions, and i feel its best i answer them thru this platform, so that many others can learn from it * Can your pigs achieve 80kg in 6months after weaning? My answer it is YES , but with other conditions , i always like to compare pigs with Chicken A broiler can achieve 2kg weight in 10weeks, if feed well and taken care of. if you buy broilers and you dont offer it balanced diet, it wont achieve 2kg within 10weeks, meaning breed isnt all that is required; you need the following to get the best FCR * Good Breed ( Genetics) * Good Feed * Good Management The 3 works hard in hard, if you cant practice the 3 correctly, pls dont bother to buy my weaners. I will recommend you buy cheap weaners; ( if you cant do the same, dont buy broilers, go and buy local chicken). ** When can i get A.I training etc? I did mine in kanhym estate in SA; they have about 6,000 sow; i dont know anybody offering it in Nigeria I only know of about 2 farms with A.I facilities, but at the moment, they dont offer training, neither do they sell semens to other farmers I also think the training might be useful, if you dont have access to semens. We are looking at setting up a small A.I Station before the end of the year and will offer training. ** Can you i get in-sow from A.I? We have had several request for this, in the past we have decline, because of the challenges with moving in-sow on bad roads but we want to give it a trial; We have selected some sow, that will be inseminated 22nd of March; by the 20th of April, with our pregnancy detector, we will be certain. we will be able to deliver from the 30th of April for those who have paid; in-sow are always tricky and risky; its 50/50; i dont recommend it for 1st timers. it will cost 70k each. @ Julibaba: * * I dont have pictures of my sow right now; i only got one see attached.am in SA, will be back on the farm by weekend to inseminate * We dont have boars, we only use artificial insemination; i have posted some pictures in the past
|
@ Akhis: Thanks for your comment, i think expensive is a relative word; some people sell weaners for N2,500 some sell for N8,000 i know of another farm that sells its own for N20,000; pork is sold for N600 in Lagos and in some other places in Lagos it is sold for N1,300; local pigs are sold for N250, some N300 per kg; you have pure water for N5 and table water for N50 ; both thru the same purification process. Pigs are different from pigs, the quality of meat, the fat level and other factors matters. |
